A man came to inside a room of a building. He scanned the room while still laying on the ground and realized he was still inside the hospital. Many of his comrades were fallen around him. He sat up and as he did he felt a sharp pain in his side. He felt the area and looked at it. There was no blood, but just bruising. He climbed to his feet, standing 5'10". This enabled him to get a better view of the area now. He could see the operating table. "The girl.." He spoke softly, obviously no one would hear him. Ellie was the girl who was supposed to help mankind. She held the key to the cure for the infection that was the Codrycep fungus, but Joel betrayed the Fireflies and took her away.. He walked the hallways of the hospital to see if there were any other survivors, none at all... Not even Marlene...
He stepped outside and looked over the horizon at the ensuing storm that was approaching.. "I swear to continue this path.. I will find her or anyone else that shows immunity to this evil.." That was Desmond Thompson's promise to himself and the world. He would cure the world and help it to start anew. But first, he would have to start over with the rebuilding process of the Fireflies. But why maintain the same organization? Surely word would spread that Marlene is no more and the Fireflies would cease to exist save a few stragglers. He began his journey to find a new city; his new starting point. All the while he had plenty of time to think about what to do.
A years time had passed when Desmond settled in what remained of Chicago. The now 26 year old had big plans for the city and quickly gained followers of his cause to save mankind. He was able to influence many of the people, including the mayor. Chicago was already the perfect setup because it had thick ten foot walls that surrounded the cities northern border connecting from the Chicago River to Lake Michigan along what use to be Chicago Ave. It also had the Chicago River circle about as the west and center border with the lake being on the east. The center of this city with a population of just over a thousand people, was where LaSalle St and Grand Ave used to be. Many of the bridges to cross the Chicago river were destroyed to limit the number of access points into this civilization and those that remained had checkpoints established in them. Before, the lake wasn't well known to be great drinking water, but over the years, engineers had found a way to un-taint the water that flowed through the Chicago River. The harbor that use to be Navy Pier allowed for perfect means to venture into the lake for fishing purposes and trading with areas across the way.
Desmond was allowed the privilege to re-purpose the university, now known as New Chicago University (NCU) on the northern area of the city by Mayor Maxwell to get scientists to study what information he had. Mayor Maxwell was formly Mayor Daley's secretary, but when the infection spread to Chicago, the mayor fled the city. Mayor Maxwell has been able to keep order in this city, not a very large city, but she had strict rules in place to make sure that nothing ever went wrong and that outbreaks were kept to a minimum.
Desmond's views on how to accomplish getting a cure intrigued the mayor. The two of them were the only ones to know of what needed to be done when a suspected immune person were to show. The same process that would have been done to Ellie. However, they knew that they had to keep it a secret. Des' new organization was nicknamed, the "Guardians" (placeholder in case I find a better name) since they considered themselves humanities' last chance at survival.
