Nathan had been out of the Marines for 6 years having served for 4 years, he was now 28 and wanted nothing to do with most of the people in the country he once defended. For 3 years he struggled to find work and deal with the fact that he was barely able to sleep with out medication anymore. He had spent 2 years in a war zone waking up to gunshots and explosions every night. He finally took every penny he had saved and moved deep into a forest his land surrounded but hundreds of thousands of acres of state land. His property was small only a few acres of his own he was able to buy from the state only accessible by a small dirt trail from the main road.

It was the 10th night in a row he had not been able to get threw the night sleeping and he was frustrated deciding to go for a walk he gathered his jacket and rifle and walked into the woods. The old military jacket had been modified slightly to hold a pistol under his right arm. On his belt hung a knife and over his shoulder an m4 rifle he had bought for hunting around here. The sky was dark but not completely black it just bright enough for him to walk with out a light. He had great night vision his light blue eyes and naturally light colored skin, though it was now tanned, had given him that though bright lights hurt his eyes slightly.

He ran his hand threw his short brown hair as he milled threw the woods checking the traps he had made for small game he used to keep himself fed. He moved slowly and quietly but his body was to large to be completely silent he was 6'4 and just over 200 pounds. He was very well built and work around his small property had helped him stay that way. His eyes scanned the forest as he walked soon finding himself off his property.

Raven walked through the forest, tired and weak. She had stopped hearing the barks of dogs and the shouts of men, guards who were after her. It had been but a few hours since she was free, and already she was having second thoughts. After forever of being kept in a four by six cell, being probed and tested every day. It was unbearable, but at least she was alive in there. Looking around her now, in unfamiliar area, jumping at any sound, scared, cold, tired, hurt...she wondered if she would die out here.

Raven, in a past life, might have been considered amazingly beautiful. But they had changed her. Her skin was deathly pale from being kept out of the sun. Her body was proportioned just right, curved in the right places, but on a closer look she seem too thin to be healthy. She was short, and her once long black locks were harshly chopped, as if someone did a quick job of cutting them with scissors. Her eyes were sapphire, but had a dull look to them. Her clothing was only a gown, the kind they gave patients at hospitals. It was smudged with dirt and blood. But the thing she considered worst were her wings.

One might have considered the large black wings beautiful, with black silken feathers. But she considered them a curse. She could not fly, or at least she did not know how. They were very big, and took up a lot of space. But worst of all, it was a constant remind of how they had changed her. As soon as she knew how to do so, she would have them removed.

She stopped for a moment, leaning against a tree. Everything was quiet as night came, all but the wind rustling through the trees. After catching her breath she pushed herself off of the tree, and trudged on.

Nathan had heard the heavy steps and began moving towards them slowly he could not place them they where to light to be a mans but to infrequent for a animal. Soon he caught a glimpse of the small form moving threw the woods it was a small person. His quick steps remained fairly quite as he brought his rifle to his shoulder in case the person was armed. Finding a tree he realized something they where about to walk into one of his traps pointing his rifle at the small girl he turned on the flashlight on the bottom of his rifle illuminating the young girl with bright soft blue light. "Don't move! There is a trap 3 feet in front of you. "

He dropped to his knee his elbow resting on his knee as he scanned the form in front of his rifle seeing the girl he began to relax. Then he saw the wings he had heard of odd things in the base not far from here but ... they where all just drunken rumors. "Who or what are you? And what are you doing this far out in the woods?" His voice was calm though it sounded a bit harsh as if he was not pleased to see anyone out in the forest. He came here to be left alone not to bothered by people who would not understand him.

Raven froze, her eyes wide with fear. She could see his rifle quite easily, aimed at her. He could see far better than any human, she had the sight of a hawk now. She didn't stop because of the trap, she stopped because she thought he was one of them. He moved like them, the careful, trained movements. "I-I'm sorry, I'll leave, just don't kill me." she said quickly, fear shaking her voice. He would know what she was if he was a guard, but he did not look happy to see her. "I don't have any money or anything, I'm sorry."

He lowered his rifle carefully looking at her confused turning off the light and reaching into his jacket slowly with his left hand. Inside the pocket was a small flashlight he turned it on as he stood his rifle hanging over his shoulder again with its tactical sling. His hand remained on the handle as he raised the light turning it on being polite and keeping the light out of her face. "What are you doing out here? How did you get this far into the woods. " He moved slowly towards her stepping over the small trap as his eyes scanned her form trying to figure out the wings.

"Why would i care if you had any money? If i was looking for people to rob would i be walking around in the woods?" He spoke in a half laugh hoping to ease some of the tension she seemed to have no weapons unless her wings where hiding something behind her. He saw no harness holding the wings to her body and it made no sense she was a woman as best he could tell. "What are you?"

"Um..." she took in a deep breath. How could she possibly explain her situation? Things like her didn't exist, anything she said would more realistic than the truth. She thought up a lie quickly, contemplating if she could make a run for it. She didn't think it was possible, he had a pretty good handle on his riffle. "I was camping with my friends, I just got lost. I'm sorry if I'm on your property, I will leave right away." she said, trying to coax him into letting her go. She didn't need this attention, he could let the guards know if he so wanted. She shrugged when he asked her about the money. "Maybe you wanted a toll." she said, trying to ease the tension as well. And to distract from his last question. What are you. Hell, she didn't even know anymore.

He chuckled as she mentioned him wanting a toll it was good she was able to try to crack jokes with an armed man standing in front of her. "No i only charge the toll when people cross my bridge. You must be really fuckin lost since the nearest camp ground is a mile away. " He paused for a moment before shaking his head a bit as he realized his language and looked up at her smiling weakly. "Sorry... old habits die hard, please forgive my language. How long have you been lost?" He looked at her staring at her wings again then at her shoulders trying to figure out how she had them attached.

If they where part of her why was she walking seems like anything that had wings would be able to fly and get around much faster. They looked so amazing it was unbelievable if they where fakes they where the best fakes he had ever heard of even the movies did not have fakes that good. He took a deep breath noticing the blood on her clothing he took a long look into her eyes wondering why she was bleeding. "Who's blood is that?"

"About an hour, I think." she said. A normal girl could walk a mile in an hour easily, it was plausible. It was dark too, so it would be easy to lose direction. She was very careful to keep her wings in the same position they were in when he found her, and not to move a single feather. As long as she was still, maybe he wouldn't think they were real. She glanced up at him, noticing how much bigger he was than her. She was only 5'2" and he was way taller, and built too. She felt a little nervous now. "The blood? Oh, mine, must have cut myself." she said casually. This was only a half lie. Some of the blood was hers, most of it actually. She kept her expression calm, not wanting to draw attention to the fact she was wearing a hospital gown, not the kind of clothing a camper would wear.

"Okay... Im done playing this game you wanna lie to the jar head go ahead good luck getting threw these woods. There are traps everywhere i give you 10 minuets before your stuck some were. " He turned and began to walk away slipping the flashlight back into his pocket letting the area go dark. He began walking slowly back towards his house he was not going to let the girl play games with him. She was not a camper, she had did not just randomly get lost, and that was not a small cut she had that caused the blood to be on her robe.

He had developed quite the temper in his years in the service and his shortest fuse was for being jerked around. He took a deep breath as he walked away he hated the fact that he was leaving a small girl in the woods alone. He slowed his pace a bit as he fought internally with his desire to leave her there and to protect her. His stupid instincts where conflicting and it was not ending well he was getting a head ache. Stopping about 20 yards from her reaching into his pocket pulling out a pill body and taking one to help with his head ache.

"Wait!" she cried out as he started to walk away. She had already nearly walked into a trap already, and having no idea what to look for she would probably walk into one again. While she would have loved to have him leave her be, dying in the middle of a forest caught in a trap did not seem like a better alternative. She didn't want to trust him though. He was willing to let her die, she knew she shouldn't rely on him at all, but she hand no other choice.

Very deliberately she lifted her wings, spreading them wide. They were huge, probably a fifteen foot wingspan. They made her look like an angel, they were so perfect it was a wonder that she couldn't fly. "If they find me, they will take me back. I can't go back." she said, genuine fear in her eyes. There was no hiding now.

He turned to her to listen to what ever argument she was going to try to jerk him around with now when he saw the shadows of her wings high in the air. He raised his rifle and turned the flashlight back on his eyes growing wide as he dropped to a knee reassuming a firing position. "What the hell! You need to explain what the hell is going on here. " He spoke his voice not showing fear more that he was creeped out. His mind was racing can bullets kill an angel... or a demon .... or what ever the hell she was.

He caught a bit of the fear in her voice and it confused him why would she be scared? Here she was freaking him out and she was the one afraid was he losing his mind. He closed his eyes blinking a bit wondering if he was drunk even though he did not remember drinking. He blinked a few times wondering if he was hallucinating it would not have been the first time he had strange visions in the woods at night. This would be the first one that seemed this real though maybe it was time to head back into town and look for some help.

She flinched and closed her wings again as he pointed the riffle at her, and raised her hands in surrender. God, he was going to kill her, she could see the fear in her eyes. "Please don't shoot me!" she begged. "I just escaped, ok? They are coming after me. Please, just put the gun down, please." her hands were shaking. She had gotten so far and now she was going to die by the hand of a crazed military man. Why the hell was he scared anyways? He was twice the size of her, and armed. He could snap her like a twig.

"Come on... Get over here. " Moving the rifle to use the light to show her where to walk he was still nervous but he knew he needed more information. "Its not a short walk back to my place try to follow me as close as you can. While we walk... you explain to me where you escaped from and what exactly your escaping from. " He said knowing this was a stupid idea letting some sort of angel demon into his home before knowing what it was but he could not turn away a pretty girl. Certainly not one who was terrified he felt bad enough for scaring her so much. Once she was close he lowered his rifle never letting his hand get to far from his knife in case she was just baiting him into leaving himself undefended.

She walked quickly where he had pointed to with the flashlight. Her wings were fully folded up, pressed tight against her back, so they were not as obvious. The more human she appeared, the better, she thought. "I escaped from a facility a while that way." she said, pointing, "They sent their guards and dogs after me. I think I shook them off my trail but they will still be looking for me." she explained quickly, trying to keep up with him. His strides were far longer than her's. "I can't go back there. I'll die before I go back there." she said firmly, her hands shaking again. She glanced, down, noticing his hand move to his knife. He didn't trust her. That was all right, he had no reason to trust anyways.

After a bout a 20 minuet walk they had crossed the 1/4 mile to his house walking up to the simple one story house just with a nice looking deck on the front and the back. He moved to the deck and slid under the rail as the stairs where on the far side. He looked at her realizing her wings where to large to allow her passage threw the small gap. Leaning over the railing holding his hands out to help her climb over. "Ill help you climb over don't worry i wont let you fall i promise. " He looked into her eyes there was not a single light visible from inside the small home he had placed black out curtains over the windows to keep his home hidden at night.

" Thanks." She said, grabbing his hands, letting him help her up, over the railing. She had to resist the urge to beat her wings as she scrambled over the rail. She probably would have whacked him in the head on accident, her wings were very powerful, but she wasn't very aware of her newest limbs. Once she was over the railing she glanced at his house. It was nice, in the simple kind of way. But what she liked best was how hard it was to see. Even if the guards did come by this area, in the dead of night they would walk right past it.

His hands where strong but he was quite gently once she was standing on the edge of the deck his hands went to her waist lifting her with ease. She was light lighter then the gear he used to carry in the service every day and he could not help but stare into her eyes as he set her down and slowly released her waist. He slowly turned looking around the area as he placed his hand on the door knob pushing it open slowly. The area was illuminated by a soft light coming from the kitchen just enough to make the small hight difference between the deck and the house's floor visible. "Go on in... ladies first." He said softly placing his hand on her lower back his arm touching the silken feathers of her wings making him smile.

Her feathers where so soft he could not help but smile as he felt them against his skin. The inside was simple but nice and cozy a large couch sat against the wall a small tv seated in the corner across from it. It was one of his only 2 bills he had tried to live with out tv and the internet but it was to hard. A short wall ended before the wall allowing passage into the kitchen and dinning area. A small table with 3 chairs sat against the wall across from the simple kitchen. On the other side of the living area a hallway lead down to the bathroom and the bedroom but both doors where currently closed.

He followed her inside closing the door behind him locking it and securing the dead bolt and chain lock. He looked over at her and took a deep breath remaining silent as he went into his room at the end of the hall tossing his rifle onto the bed. One of only 3 pieces of furniture in the room, a dresser and computer desk capping it off. He then moved to his closet looking for something she could wear he did not want her getting blood all over his house. "Has the bleeding stopped?" He said remaining calm and a bit blunt clearly not good at dealing with an injured woman he truly was still a soldier.

When he picked her up he would notice she was far lighter than a human girl her size should of been. Part of it was because she was naturally thin, but the other part was she was made that way. Her bones her hollow, and the majority of her insides were lungs. Like a bird's body, her lungs and heart were large to get extra oxygen out of the air needed to sustain flight.

She saw him looking at her when he set her down, and felt his arm brush over her wings. For someone who was pointing a gun at her not five minutes ago he was being pretty friendly, and that put her on edge. She quickly did as he said though, and hurried into the house. She looked around while he went into the bedroom, taking in the layout. "What? Oh." she wasn't paying attention when he asked her a question. She hooked a finger around the collar of her gown and pulled in forward, peeking down at her body. She had a series of small gashes along her stomach from the barbed wire she had climbed over. "Yeah, bleeding's stopped." she said, letting the gown go and snap back into place.

He walked back out with a very old pair of fatigues a simple greenish brown with an old braided belt laid over top. He looked at her smiling a bit nervously hoping she would not mind wearing his cloths. "You need me to take a look at your wounds or are they not that deep?" He spoke softly holding the simple button up shirt and pants out for her looking into her eyes. "The bath room is the only door on the left take .... " He paused realizing it was not going to be easy for her to get his shirt on then he moved to her side. "You know ... it might just fit over your wings... but if it does not... Call for me and ill come alter it." He took a deep breath going into his room to gather things for her to sleep on his mind wondering how exactly he would help her dress with those large wings in the way.

"Um, I'm not sure." she said, not sure how deep the gashes were. They hurt, but she wasn't sure if it was really that bad. "Thanks." she said, accepting the fatigues, "I'll let you know if its not working." she slipped into the bathroom, shutting the door behind her.

Her voice sounded out just a few moments later. "This isn't working!" She was a mess, the shirt was only part-way on, as her wings were stuffed uncomfortably into the shirt. She didn't have a bra either, as she was never given one at the testing facility. The pants were huge, you couldn't see her feet. Even with the belt on, they were still to big. Worst still, the cuts on her stomach were bleeding again in her struggle.

He could not help but chuckle as he walked in to the bathroom she looked like a kid trying on her dads clothing. "Okay lets see what we can do about those cuts first." He seemed to ignore the fact her breasts where exposed his hands gently slipping the shirt from her body and moving to the sink. His hands gently gripping her waist picking her up and setting her on the counter gently before reaching into the cabinet under the sink. Handing her a towel to cover herself as he wet a was cloth and very gently wiped the cuts clean. "This is going to sing a bit okay... " He said taking some rubbing alcohol and drizzling it over her stomach to clean the wounds wiping it away with the wet cloth. He was focused on her wounds clearly having seen his fair share.

She blushed a little as he removed the shirt and lifted her up onto the counter. She was exposed often in the testing facility. They striped her naked, giving her a new gown only every so often. Still, they only saw her as a test subject. He was a man, and she was sure he didn't see her like that. She thanked him when he gave her the towel and wrapped it around her shoulders and covered her breasts.

"Don't worry, what ever you do, I've had worst." she gripped the counter though, ready for the pain. She inhaled sharply when the alcohol stinged her cuts, the air hissing between her teeth. Her wings flicked a bit, agitated.

He then set to work with bandages and surgical tape quickly patching up her stomach with the practiced skill and haste of someone who had done it under fire. Once she was fully patched up he slowly wrapped her body with a large ace bandage wrapping her stomach with it to hold each bandage in place. He was done he knelt down smiling as he saw how far up the legs her feet where. He quickly rolled up the bottoms of the pants until they rested on her ankle like they should smiling up at her. "Okay now for your shirt ... I... I am going to need to touch your wings to figure out where to cut the shirt is that okay? " He said softly helping her down carefully looking into her eyes no longer seeing her as a wounded ally seeing her as a woman again.

She tapped her bandages, admiring his work. He had done a good job, as far as she could tell, and pretty quick too. She knew it already, but he was beyond a doubt a military man, one with a lot of experience. She smiled back at him after he fixed the pants, grateful that a stranger was taking care of her.

"Go for it. Just be careful, if I whack you with them it could break your jaw." she would try to stay still, but she wasn't used to her wings yet. When she was startled, or when she flinched, her wings would involuntarily move. Her brain was only built to keep track of four limbs, not six. "So, you still freaked out, or what?" she asked, holding the towel so her shoulders were bare, but her breasts were still covered.

"A little... I am still trying to figure out what is going on... You can bleed so your no angel or demon. " His hand pressed gently on her back at the bottom of her ribs letting her get used to his touch. Slowly he pushed his hand up slowly up between her wings spreading his hand as far as he could. His thumb barely touching the base of her left wing his middle finger barely touching the base of her right. He let his hand there for a moment taking a soft breath she certainly felt real what had they done to her. "What ... should i call you?" He said softly moving to the sink placing his hand on the back making mental note of where he would need to cut.

He then pulled the knife from the sheath on his belt and moving quickly slitting the back of the shirt from where the top of her wing would be setting all the way down threw the hem. He then put the blade away not wanting to scare her any more then he already had. Turning to face her he held the shirt out for her to slip it on he was playing dress up with a angel he could not help but smile. As she slipped her arm in he lifted the shirt high into the air and over her wings letting the slit of cloth fall between her wings perfectly then helped her slip her arm in the other sleeve.

Kneeling down he took the belt and pulled it firmly around her snugging it around her waist shaking his head at the massive bunches of extra fabric that he could do nothing about. At least the belt would keep them from falling off her body even if they did massive on her form. He then cut the old belt about a foot from the buckle tossing the extra material in the trash. " Why don't you button up and ill finish fixing your shirt I have some pins in the first aid kit i can used to make it fit a bit better. " He moved from her turning his back so she could have her privacy.
