Hoyt had spun a tail of lies in trying to cover his ass, but Kern knew that Hoyt wasn't the best soldier. He was often bad mouthing other soldiers who weren't white. There were even times when Hoyt was fighting with them. The truth was that Hoyt was hated among many of the other men. Still Kern only had Sam's word against Hoyt's. The other two soldiers hadn't seen anything except for Hoyt's attack on the old man. They were able to backup Sam's story there. This led Kern to believe the rest that Sam was saying. Kern asked Cruz & Spade to search for the girl. They did find a place in the field behind the huts where some blood was found. It wasn't enough blood to come from a wound. It did however add to what Sam had said. The search didn't turn up the girl. She must have fled into the jungle escaping the area and was most likely hiding. Kern ordered everyone back to the firebase. He would decided what would be done after speaking with Sergeant Morgan. Kern gave the villagers some food and promised more in the future. He would also see that they got medical aid from Sam once her supplies came in. Sam could do a lot in winning the confidence of these people. Having them on the U.S. side would help with the security of the firebase. On the trip back, Kern made sure that Hoyt was watched carefully. He had Sam with him so she could explain more of what happened. Sam would have to write up a report in detail once she got back to the firebase anyway. This report would go a long way in helping Kern to make up his mind. As the patrol approached the base, they radioed in. Morgan told them to come on in. The team broke up and Kern told Sam about the report. He wanted it and her in the command bunker asap.
