The remainder of the night was uneasy. The NVA & Viet Cong were pulled back into the cover of the dark jungle. The leader of the enemy forces, Colonel Min spent the night planning a new attack on the American lines. He sat safely inside a bunker deep within the mountain facing the knoll where 1st platoon was holding up. Min spoke with his officers on how best to turn the American lines. He decided to send some men down the other side of the mountain. These troops would work their way around the mountain and attack the knoll from behind. Min wanted to slaughter the American's in a surprise attack. If his forces could hold here and win. Min could marshal a greater force and attack Camp Baker. The fall of this American base would lead to Nha Trang falling. Effectively cutting South Vietnam in two. Min already pictured himself as a great hero to the people. A victory such as this over American forces would only make him an even bigger hero. Min would get that promotion to General he so badly wanted. All he needed now was for his men to take the knoll. This would put his troops behind the American lines and allow them to turn the tide of battle.
Morning came quickly. The members of 1st platoon had little, or no sleep. Most spent the night watching & listening for sights & sounds during the night. Breakfast came from a can that morning. Nothing new for those who spent time in the jungle. It was set to be another hot & sticky day. Most of the men had already stripped down to just wearing their t-shirts. Their uniform tops & flack vest had been removed during the night. It was just to damn hot and going to be hotter. Even Raymond "Ray" Cobb who was the last surviving member of the patrol which started this battle, had stripped down. He looked more like an African Tribesmen then an American soldier. Cobb had been involved with this fight for so long. His pants were ripped in many places. He had taken a knife and cut his pants into shorts. His sweat glistened over his muscled black body. Cobb was shorter then Motown. A bit taller then Spade and more buff then both. He, like Tony wondered how a hot looking woman like Sam got into a combat outfit. It was east to see that she was one hell of a medic, but Sam was a woman. Cobb sat with his back against the knoll watching Sam on & off. He could see how her sweat soaked t-shirt clung to her chest while she moved around. Cobb certainly wouldn't mind getting some of her white pussy when this was all over. He wondered just how many of these guys were lucky enough to tap that sweet looking white ass? This was something that Cobb would have to find out about.
Just before dawn, Colonel Min sent his men out. He had picked a small force of 12 to circle around the American lines and attack the knoll from behind. Any more could get spotted, or heard. Min told his men to move quickly, but quietly. He wanted this attack to be a surprise. By the time Min's men reached the base of the mountain, 1st platoon was already eating their breakfast. Kern, Morgan & Kowalski had a very short meeting during the meal. Their biggest fear was that their left was exposed. This made it easy for the enemy to attack from that point. Trouble was, beyond the knoll, there was a lack of cover. Kowalski was ordered to take five men and extend the line in a fish hook. This fish hook would bend from the end of the knoll around. Kern hoped that this would at least give them some warning in case the NVA decided to attack there. Once the men had eaten, Kowalski hand picked a group and moved them to cover the left. Moments later those damn whistles were heard. Another attack was coming from the front. Min planned on using these attacks to cover his new attack from behind.
