It was a calm and chilly evening in the grassy woods. There was nothing but tall trees lining the dirt pathway, with small bushes scattered around. The clouds overhead didn't threaten to rain, but it did make the place darker than it should have been. Behind some of the bushes hid two young men, in plain and dusty clothing, one of them wearing a cloth mask covering his lower face. For a while, they sat in silence, looking across the pathway, as if waiting for someone to pass by, but then the younger of the two began to feel restless.

"Jeez, how long must we wait? It's beginning to get cold here..." The younger one started, but the one with the mask quickly snapped at him. "Be quiet, you! You must have patience as a thief. You never know if someone filled with gold coins in their pouch may pass by." The other male sighed at him, looking down at the knife he was carrying. "But it feels kinda wrong. Do we really have to kill those people for their money?" "You idiot! We're not here to kill them, we're here to rob them! What are we, murderers? The knives are just to threaten them, and also maybe hurt them a bit if they resist." The other thief nodded to him, sighing a bit. "Well, you should have told me that earlier, and I wouldn't have felt bad about it." The masked man became irritated at this point, and almost barked at him as he grabbed the other man's collar, pulling him closer to him. "Look, I only took you in because I felt I could use a hand, and I'm beginning to feel that I'm better off doing this alone. Let me warn you, if you screw up your first robbery, you're done for." The trainee gulped as he looked into the eyes of the other male, nodding quickly. "Y-yeah, I hear you loud and clear, boss!"

A soft sigh escaped her lips as she walked through the woods, keeping to the long dirt paths that would eventually lead her to her destination. She gazed down at the box she was carrying, inside it contained a relic that held some kind of great importance or power. She hadn't been informed of what was inside, but only told to bring it to another shrine for safe keeping. Shaking her head, she didn't bother to dwell too long on curious questions that rose to her mind about what the fuss could be over such a small thing.

As she walked, she breathed deeply, loving the fresh air. Her clothing was a traditional shrine maiden outfit, and her long black hair was pulled into a thick, loose braid that reached her waist. Her bright green eyes gazed around at the forest around her, simply loving the moment she had out of her temple.

"Now quiet! I hear someone coming..." The masked male quickly lowered his voice to a whisper as he pulled the other male down, causing him to almost smash his chin against the ground. He parted the bushes lightly with his hands and saw a young and beautiful girl in shrine maiden uniform, carrying something in her hands.

"Ugh... What...?" The other male also looked through the bushes, but sighed on seeing the girl. "Ah, a miko. I doubt she'd have anything worth steali-" He was quickly silenced by a deft bonk on the head by the first male. "Really? Look at that thing she's holding. I'm pretty sure there's something valuable in that. Something that will fetch us a high price!" He grinned to himself as he readied his dagger. "All right then," he began instructing the younger thief, "On my signal, you jump out at her. Hold out your dagger at her as you approach her. I'll do the talking, while you learn from a pro." They waited for her to come close enough, and then they jumped out of the bushes, stopping in front of the girl, brandishing their daggers. "Hey, you, young girl, you have something we're interested in..." The masked one sneered, eyeing the box, and then at the girl herself.

As someone suddenly jumped out from the bushes nearby, she let out a surprised squeak and stumbled back a few steps. She nearly dropped the box, but managed to hold it against her chest. Hearing their words, her eyes instantly went to the box and she felt her heart skip a beat. She couldn't let them have this, no matter what, but unfortunately, she wasn't much of a fighter unless it was against some kind of dark force like a demon.

Spinning around, she started to run in the other direction, her heart racing as she tried to figure out how she would escape. She couldn't be caught, and she only hoped she was fast enough to outrun them.

"Oh no, you don't don't!" The masked thief started, already dashing towards her; being an experienced runner due to his profession, he was able to run faster than the girl, catching up to her and grabbing her arm roughly. "You're not going anywhere, young girl!" He smirked, quickly swiping the box away from her with his free hand. "This thing - whatever it is - is going to get me some cash!"

The other male had caught up with them by then, panting slightly. "Oh, wow, that was quite easy..." He walked up to her, catching the box as the older male threw it at him. "Now keep that thing." He looked back at the girl, smiling slyly, almost lewdly. "You're a fine thing, you know that? You have a boyfriend or something?" "E-eh? Boss? What's with that tone in your voice?" He looked at the two with a little unease.

"Let me go!" She snapped, pulling back against his grasp. Her eyes went to the other boy holding the box and she frowned "You don't understand, I need that, it's important, and really dangerous" She said, looking to the man who had a hold of her. "Let me go" She said again, bringing her other hand to try and pry his off of her.

She didn't like the tone he was using, and she could feel fear rising in her chest. Nobody was nearby, nobody would hear her if she cried out, so now... She knew she was in a lot more trouble than she'd originally expected.

The younger thief looked at the box curiously, blinking when she heard her. "Eh, what? Dangerous?" He was getting excited and nervous at the same time, wondering if he should open the box, while the masked one grinned and pulled the girl into the woods, pushing her down onto the grass with force. The other male quickly followed, box in his hand, watching the two. "Boss, are you really gonna do what I think you're gonna do?"

"So she's the one I am assigned to, master?" The young male with soft white hair and a black mask covering his lower face said as he looked at the large mirror before him. Rather than showing his reflection, it showed the scene that was taking place in the woods. A voice spoke from behind him, a soft but deep voice. "Yes. You know what to do." The male simply nodded as he looked at small bronze amulet he was holding, as it shone lightly in the dimly-lit area. It was apparently broken, being a half-circle with a raised relief of a large but incomplete kanji. He looked up, clenching it, and walked slowly past the mirror, disappearing into the darkness.

As she was pushed onto the grass, she gasped and squirmed a bit in place. "L-Let me go!" she cried out, struggling against his grasp, though it wasn't really worth it. She was weak, there was no way she could fight against someone like him, someone who had likely done this many times, and maybe even against stronger girls that her.

The masked thief laughed evilly, straddling her and pinning her arms down above her with one hand, his other hand stroking her soft cheeks. "Hmm, you're quite young, aren't you? How old are you anyway?" He slid his hand off her face and lowered it to her chest, as it hovered over a mound in anticipation. The other male simply gulped, watching them, and walking a little closer to them. "Boss, no..."

Before the older man could go further, though, something whizzed past his hand, grazing it, and landed above the girl's head, a little to the side. The man squeaked in pain as he retracted his hand and looked up what the hell that was. He widened his eyes on seeing a small sharp piece of metal shared liked a four-pointed star wedged into the ground. "A sh-shuriken...?" The other male visibly panicked, looking around for the attacker. However, they both knew they wouldn't have much of a chance against someone who used shurikens.

As she heard the air go passed her ear, she gasped and froze in place. Gulping, she looked passed the man holding her down to see a new person standing behind them. Someone was here? Someone was saving her?! She felt her heart soar happily as she realized that she might get out of this.

A young male with brilliant white hair and a black mask around his lower face stood half-kneeled, with his arms crossed and holding ashuriken in each hand, wearing a tight sleeveless black gi with black shoulder and knee paddings, complete with thick black shoes. His cool-blue eyes looked ahead at the three, ready to strike on any sign of strife. "Let her go." He said simply, his voice and eyes calm, yet threatening.

The two thieves simply stared bewildered at the newcomer, and then the masked one got off the girl, turning to the other male. "We'd better run. Ditch the box." The younger male quickly nodded, and placed the box beside the girl. The next minute, they were running away from them deeper into the woods, clearly wanting to get away as far from the ninja as possible.

The new male stood up straight after they left, putting the shurikens back in his side pouch, and walked up the girl, holding out a hand to her. "Are you alright?"

She watched in surprise as they left and she smiled softly, sighing a bit as she felt a rush of relief go through her. As he came over, she took his hand and stood up before walking to the box and picking it up, clutching it to her chest. Looking back to her rescuer, she smiled and nodded "Yes... Thank you" She said, biting her lip and glancing down slightly.

"Though, I"m sorry to say, I have nothing I can offer you as thanks" She said, feeling bad that she didn't bring anything with her besides her clothing and the relic. She wanted to repay him, to say thank you, especially since she now owed him her life.

The male looked around a little, making sure there was no one else around who could potentially attack them. He looked back at the girl, nodding. "Don't worry about it. I don't need anything. Although..." He looked back onto the road and the darkening sky. "I would like to accompany you to your destination, wherever it is."

Smiling, she girl slowly nodded and she let out a soft sigh. "Alright... I would like that" She said, not wanting to risk someone getting their hands on the relic, especially since it had nearly happened once already on this trip. "The village I'm going to isn't far, and once I'm there I'm sure I could find some way to repay you. If you wish you could even come with me back to my home and there I'd have money that I could offer as thanks" She said, brushing herself off before smiling up at him. "W-What's your name?"

The male nodded to the girl, releasing her hand after a while. "It's fine, I really don't need anything. For now, at least." He breathed out as he dusted his bare arms; he had slightly darker skin than the girl. "You never know when you're attacked. My name is Ryu Hayato, and yours?"

She smiled softly and tilted her head to the side a bit. "My name is Nia Armentey" She said, grinning up at him as she started to walk towards the path again. "Thank you, again" She said, sighing softly as she gazed up at him.

"Armentey, that's an unusual name..." He blinked for a moment and then looked down the long path. "Well, miss Nia, we must hurry, it's getting darker." He walked beside her when she noticed that she was looking at him. "Ah, it's not a problem at all..."

Nia smiled and nodded her head before continuing to walk. She sighed brushed some hair behind her ear and glanced over to him. "So, why were you wandering through this area of the forest?" She asked curiously, not sure what he would have been doing.

"Huh," the male shrugged, as he put his hands behind his back, casually looking upwards. "It may sound strange, but I actually came to rescue you. I've been assigned to protect you for the time being." He looked at the girl and shrugged. "Apparently, you're someone important to my master."

Nia blinked in surprise as she stared at him. Someone important? To someone she couldn't imagine she'd met? She never met people that much since she spent all her time in the temples, and rarely actually talking with people. Still, she decided not to question it, and instead hesitantly nodded. "W-Well then I guess I owe your master a thank you as well"

He nodded his head, sighing softly. "My master is a good man. He is old, but wise beyond his years. It's funny, though, I don't know how old he is." He turned to face the girl, looking at her with slight curiosity. "I don't know if you've met him or not, but he tends to stay alone, most of the time in meditation. And also... Well, you'll know soon enough."

//Timeskip to the village?

~{Sure}~

As she'd said, it wasn't much longer until they arrived at the village. It was small, but near the back of it was a large temple. A short walk across the village, and they were at the steps. Taking a deep breath, she began to make her way up towards the large double doors that would lead them inside, nervous about this visit.

The male stood beside the girl, arms akimbo, as he surveyed the area. "Well, I guess this is where you wanted to come?" The village was quite peaceful, and the villagers themselves seemed friendly. He faced the nervous girl, nodding his head. "Huh, go on, then. I'll wait out here."

She slowly nodded her head and went inside. She was soon met by one of the members of the temple who brought her to a small, private room. The woman opened the box containing the relic, and instead of the look Nia had expected, the woman looked a bit worried. "This, isn't right. Something is missing, it's power isn't here" She said, making Nia wrinkled her eyebrows in confusion. After an hour of talking, Nia hesitantly walked back out to meet with the ninja from before. "S-So. Your master said you were to help me, right?"

It had taken at least an hour for the girl to return, but the male had been waiting patiently outside the shrine, leaning against a tree, his eyes closed. Patience was something he had learnt during his training, and he had been made to wait much longer than this, usually in meditation. He opened his eyes on hearing the girl approached him, and quickly stepped away from the tree, looking at her as he spoke in a calm voice. "Yes. My master told me to accompany you to your destination, and that I would know what to do next after this." He breathed out softly and shrugged. He had an idea of what he was to do now, but he was not entirely sure of it.
