Both Samson and Zoe were rather impressed by the skills of the teaching of the professor of the class. Each of them was focused going over the lesson in chapter one reading it over carefully. They were both good students, while Samson was far ahead of Zoe in the area of magic defense, they both were trained to focus on there work while they were in class. They remained both quiet, working hard to make sure they would either be able to learn what needed to be learned or go over the information again, and refresh their knowledge. Both Zoe and Samson were focused to the point, that they blocked out what was going on in the rest of the class, in the studying zone as it were at that moment in time.

Katy sat down at her house table looking at all the lovely food. She wished Nicko was her but he wasn't so she let out a sigh and began to eat.

Lorelai and Norah both listened intently, taking their notes and absorbing the things that Professor Magnus was teaching the class as a whole. Lori was doing her best to hide her emotions and feelings and though it was hard, was managing quite well despite things. Norah was intrigued with the professor's offbeat methods for teaching. In some ways, it reminded her of Chadwick, the fact that he strayed from what was considered 'the norm' in regards to traditional methods of teaching. She rather liked that and she most definitely respected it.

As both girls listened and scribbled their notes, their thoughts were interrupted when a sudden voice shouted out and broke the flow of the lesson. Both quirked a brow, their heads turning in the direction of the voice seeking to see who'd do such a thing and why.

Ryan and Nicko heard the Slytherin boy mutter under his breath and the two of them just shook their heads. They had just dealt with two disrespectful snakes in their previous class and they were starting to get annoyed with the way their fellow house mates were acting. The two began to take notes as they read the chapter they both respected the professor teaching the class and believed his views on things were spot on. Riku smiled back at Ashley liking the fact that they were both liking the lesson, even though she was paying attention and doing her work like she was told Riku couldn't help but think about her and Ashley getting together later that evening.

James was not surprised that one of the "perpetual children" in their midst had something to say, but the fact that there were other student there that were more than willing to quash such behavior was as equally pleasing. That was something else that Magnus was more than willing to do in his classes, allow students to express their views. When they were wrong, he had no problem telling them that they were either. It was obvious, however, that there were those in his class that were more than willing to be upfront with their opposition, be it just from their manner or some direct action. That, however, he couldn't let happen so he then moved onto the classwork.

"Now we are going to put that into action, and I mean all of us are. One at a time, you are each going to come up and deflect five attack attempts. They all should be ones you know, and ones every one of you has defenses again. The more experienced students, however, will get an extra that they only should know if they did all of there summer reading or have had experience with it. I will repeat them all, but not each time, and I will alternate with which ones from all those you should know by now. I will have you all come one at a time, not in any particular order but how you are seated, and we will begin."

He then pointed over at where Samson Alexander with reassurance to him that it was going to be safely within the bounds of classwork that things will proceed.

Samuel had been paying very close attention to everything, and he sensed that something in how Professor Magnus was going into the classwork for the day made it clear the seriousness of it all. He knew the man was going to make things intense and exciting, to make learning come alive for everyone in his class. Hearing what the Professor said, though, made him steal a look at Lorelai and then at others in the room. This was another of the reasons James Magnus was now there, and DADA Professor among other things. From that first day, they were going to have practical knowledge as well as learning to be more in tune with magic itself if possible, as well as with their wands. He was pleased, as this was always something about magic he felt was needed. He thought about how the classwork was going to go about, realizing that a rapid fire quintet or sextet of spell attempts would help with each students ability to feel magic and use it better.

Renee was on the edge of her seat over what Professor Magnus was saying now, her eyes looking over the room some. She already could see so many student very willing to get this first classwork out of the way as it would open the door for the rest of the year, but she also knew some were apprehensive. She wondered if some, like perhaps Riku, Ashley, Nicko, and other First years were as a bit concerned on how they were going to do as she was. She had had to really duel before getting to Hogwarts, but she also knew that others may not have had such hands on moments in there lives. She gave all of them smiles of reassurance, letting them know that they were all in the same boat now especially.

Ashley looked over at Riku, her eyes letting the girl know that she was concerned for her. She was so self-prepared for the class, but she was not going to assume the same about or for everyone else. She then noticed, like everyone else, that he started toward the back of the room with Samson Alexander, and she realized that it was partly to let the older student show off some of his skills as well as for him to be first. She wondered how he would handle it, and also if he would object like Lucille had.

Samson heard his name and looked up from the book to see that he was being called upon to volenteer to go first. He had no problem with this, he reminded himself of all of his father's teachings as well as that of his step-mother's teachings over the year. He slipped his hand into his pocket andwalked up and nodded, as his finger noticed that he mad a decent amount of sand inside his pocket. "Yes, sir, I am ready for this, I will do my best, sir," he said honestly with a calm tone as he took a deep breath preparing himself to deflect whatever came his way.

Ryan listened as the professor spoke and after hearing that the students were going to have to deflect five attack attempts he readied himself mentally. Being a third year he had learned all the basics and some more advanced deflective spells so he was pretty confident in his abilities but that did not mean he was going to take the professor lightly Ryan could tell that Professor Magnus would not hold back and he knew that he would have to be focused when it was his turn to deflect the spells. He watched as Samson made his way up to Professor Magnus, Ryan had good faith that Samson would do just fine. He also made a mental note to talk to the young man later on to see if he still wanted to go flying with him when he had some free time.

Nicko was a bit nervous about the lesson but he knew that he couldn't say no, he didn't want to miss this opportunity to learn seeing as he wanted to become an auror this was basic stuff he would need to know. The young man relaxed himself and focused on the professor, he was glad he wasn't called on first simply because he wanted to watch the other students to get an idea of what he had to do, he knew a few deflective spells but he had no idea what ones he would have to use. He looked over to Ashley, Renee, and Riku wondering if they were as nervous as he was.

When Ashley looked at her with concern Riku gave her a smile to let her know she would be ok. Riku was concerned for Ashley as well but knew deep down that they would both do just fine and that the professor wouldn't do anything to harm them. She looked over at Nicko and knew he was nervous she gave him a reassuring smile to let him know everything would be just fine then she turned back to look at Ashley. Riku gave her a thumbs up for encouragement and smiled brightly letting her know she had her mental support.

Both Lorelai and Norah, Norah especially, were a bit nervous to have to get up in front of the class and perform five deflection spells. For Lori, she had a bit of stage fright. However, she always was able to manage that better when it came to a classroom setting being the typical Ravenclaw that she was. Always the overachiever when it came to her schoolwork and wanting to do as well as possible. Being a sixth year, she was also fairly confident that she was ready though she wasn't naive enough to think there were things she still had yet to learn. She more than most knew there was magic out there that she didn't know or understand and that was why she'd never stop learning what she could to defend herself against the darker magic that was out there.

Norah felt her nervousness grow at the idea of having to deflect the spells. She was sure she could do it and would definitely give her all as she wasn't the sort to back away from any kind of challenge. But that didn't mean she'd find it an easy task to face either. Given her past with her ex, Leo, she knew all too well the sorts of things those of a darker mindset were capable of, what lengths they'd go to. Just then, she felt a chill run down her spine and thoughts of the letter she'd received the night before hit her hard. It made her think about the incidents that had happened earlier in the Great Hall and during Flying class. Again, she shivered. Just then, she noticed Samson getting up to take his turn. So, she cleared her mind knowing she had to focus.

Ashley got a quick look around, letting Zoe, Nicko, Riku and Katy especially know that she was as nervous as they most likely were. She didn't have to look at Renee, as the Gryffindor had nodded that she was in the same position as they were. Expecting what the Professor was doing was not always going to happen, as no one not even those who had been in his lectures or classes were expecting such an intense first set of classwork.

Samuel looked over at Lorelai again letting her know that he, as well as Kurt, were certain she could do it. He knew that Magnus would not go easy on anyone, though he would not purposefully push too far into the areas that would be advanced for students over Second Year. He also remembered that with Magnus, sometimes how you handled failure also showed your skill as a wizard or witch. He knew that some would, like he in his Third Year, would find strength in not being unbeatable. Magnus had taken the time to remind him of that, and he knew the man would do the same with everyone in the class. Samuel admired him for that, especially that no matter the House, Year, gender, creed, or inclination, everyone had strengths. Some always were in the front, but it was how they supported and helped others that mattered as well.

Renee was still eyeing that one Slytherin , something about what he said still rubbing her the wrong way. She was still a bit hacked about the previous night, but finding there were more of "those" around was making her chaff a bit. She was not ignoring the lesson or the classwork, as she was going through her mind all of the duels she had ended up in both in school and in real situations. Part of her, despite herself, was hoping that Professor Magnus deliberately used one that the guy couldn't possibly have a defense for... or, in her mind, a justifiable knowledge of defense for. If that were the case, that would give the Professor, and other members of the Faculty, more proof that the questionable circle of students they knew of were at least dabbling in the Dark Arts. As Ashely gave her a questioning look, Renee snapped back to full attention, smiling to her.

Ashley, once she had gotten Renee back into class fully, smiled to Riku and watched what Samson was going to experience. She liked him, even though he was not very talkative and she also wondered if he preferred the company of guys exclusively. Nothing wrong with that, just that there were a LOT of cute guys there as well as very lovely females like Riku.

As Samson got into position, Magnus continued to them all. He never saw class as a thing that any form of teaching stopped, nor missed an opportunity to hammer home a point.

"I want all of you to keep in mind the reality that at least part, if not all, the battle can be in the mind. Anyone who claims absence of fear is someone to see as dangerous, as that is a person who very well may have abandoned reason."

He saluted Samson first, as that is what ethical wizards would do. He then gave five attacks at Samson, seeing how he would perform with them before giving him a sixth. It would be how he handled those as to if there would be a sixth as he wanted to see if the Third Year knew to vary how he handled each of the first five.

Samson looked and read the trajectory of the 5 spells as fast as he could, as well as how fast they were sent his way. He slide back giving himself more space and more time to deal with the incoming attacks and time for the spells to get closer together. As he slide he tossed the sand in his pockets into the air. As the sand traveled into the air, it transmuted into glass, as well as used a charm spell to cause the glass to hover over the ground between himself and the spells, and lastly he used the reflection transmute spell on the glass to make it into a kind of mirror which reflected all 5 spells up and away from himself.

Norah was a bit nervous for her turn, but she set her jaw and managed to deflect the spells that came at her much more easily than she'd expected. Only one nearly took her off guard and caused her to stumble backward. Luckily, being coordinated as she was, she managed to hold her balance and not fall over. When finished, she let out the breath she'd been holding in a loud exhale and took her seat. The exercise had definitely proved to be a challenge and she could see where she could stand to improve her skills. But at least she could rest assured that she'd manage to hold her own and that she was decently versed at the basics and for her level.

When Lorelai's turn was upon her, she could feel her tummy fluttering a bit. Stage fright was always an issue for her, but she always seemed to overcome it best when it came to exams. However, it was a bit different given that it was James administering this one. It definitely made things a bit strange. She looked over at Sam briefly before stepping up for her turn and gave him a smile. Just then, the spells were cast her way and she found herself having to suddenly act quickly. Luckily, she was quick to react, deflecting the spells fairly well and dodging one. She hoped that her performance was satisfactory. Being one of the older students, she knew the spells she'd had to counter were at a higher levels than some. But even still, she knew that was because she'd had more experience with some of the other lower level spells and not because of any other reason. When done, she gave James a tiny smile and then looked back over at Sam and quietly went back to her seat.

Samuel, Renee, and Ashley paid attention, and they watched the first three that went ahead of them do very well. Samson, Lorelai, and Norah all three did very well, and they watched as Katy then slowly got up.


Samuel hoped that Magnus could see that she was nervous and go easy on her, not soft but would be understanding of the possibility this was the first time she ever had to face things like this. Sam was well aware she was not the only one, but he also knew that there were those who would need a wake up to the realities of this. He also knew, thankfully, that those two were not one in the same and that the Professor would be able to handle each students needs.

Renee and Ashley were both ready, and they also were hoping that Professor Magnus went easy on some of the others like Katy. Renee was hoping that neither her nor Ashley came out of the class frazzled to the point they would be frightened, but she also hoped they were just plain ready for the task at hand.

Ashley nodded to Katy, letting her know that she could do it. She had faith in the other girl, and just knew that the Professor would not take liberties that would freak her out too badly. She looked to Riku, hoping the other girl also agreed with her perception and was encouraging to her as well.

Magnus smiled and nodded encouragingly to Katy as well. He liked her, and he could tell she was a bit frightened. He spoke to her, letting her know it was going to be alright. He had spoken both reassurances and praises to Samson, his precious Lorelai, and Norah, but he could see that Katy needed some assurance before hand.

When he "attacked" her, he did so with the five most likely ones that would be used on her to take advantage of her lack of experience. Here, in the safety of class, she would also be able to not really be hurt, but it was still to hammer the reality of dueling. The magic in the Castle worked with and for the students when they needed it, and as Magnus tested Katy, he knew she would be alright.

Katy nodded to the professor and to the girls encouraging her .
Katy told herself she could do this over and over in her head and decided to put the class and others aside and think of this as a student with magic wanting to attack her. she held her wand ready and watched as the five spells came her way. she manged to avoid three of them and duck for the last two. One of the spells she could feel going over her head. She was breathing hard as she said in a soft voice "was that what i was suppose to do I hope so". She stood back up to see what the professor thought.

"Very good form, Katy. Sometimes the best defense, when in doubt is to avoid the attack. Extremely good for your first time."

Magnus was very sincere, as he knew most young wizards and witches always ended up ducking one or two attacks. He knew Katy had set the standard for the other couple who didn't have practical duel experience, but he was going to make and effort to have all his students participate in the Dueling Club that year if possible. He nodded very pleased to Katy, knowing she would know to sit down. He honestly was hoping she would never have to use it for real, but she did very very well.

A couple of other students came up after her, one who missed one and got tickled, and the other who got frozen in place. He was not overly critical, rather reminded the two of what they missed. He knew that, by virtue of how he started, he was going to get to use the "talkative Slytherin" as an object lesson soon.

Katy sat down looked over to Nicko with a smile. She did it and got a good response back and she did not make a fool of herself in front of Nicko. Katy wanted to jump up and down and scream I did it I did it but knew that would get her into trouble so she remind quite. she decided when she got the chance she would go over again what she just learned in this great class.

Zoe got up for her own turn, she had her own very different style, even different from her brother whom had gone first. She had expected him to pull something out of his hat as it were, it was more his style. She watched the ones after her brother go, and they were good, solid learners, but she got an idea from the avoidance moves of Katy. It was a rather simple idea, but she was surprised she never had thought of it before. she moved to her own turn, and nodded calmly, as she took this rather seriously. She then used a charm on her shoes of tall things and took up a savate stance as if she were going to do more muggle style fighting. The charms on her shoes were relfection charms, so as the spells can she landed 5 quick kicks knocking the 5 spells away from herself. A small smile formed on the creative young woman's lips before she bowed and returned to her seat without another word spoken.

"Exceptionally creative, Zoe. Not something I would always recommend, but creative, unexpected and effective."

Magnus was impressed and was seeing that many there had their minds working in as many ways for his class as they could. A couple of more students came up, and then the Slytherin that he had been waiting on rose for his turn. Magnus was fast and furious with this one, using two advanced attacks on him, the last most enlightening when he deflected it. Magnus slowly tilted his head, something that a few of the older students may have picked up over the years that showed he was satisfied in a way that was not pleasant.

"That was very good, Mr. Lewis."

The boy turned with a satisfied grin, about to head back to his seat when Magnus interrupted his stride.

"And you can stay after class and explain to me how you know the counter spell to an attack only a intermediate practitioner of the Dark Arts would know... something you couldn't possibly have learned at either here or Hogwarts Primary."

The boy slowly returned to his seat, realizing he had been busted for knowing too much. Magnus moved on there, calling Samuel, Renee, and Ashley up as it was their turns, leaving Riku and one more student last.

Samuel, Renee, and Ashley each in turn went up to face Professor Magnus.


Samuel didn't need to be afraid, as he was prepared ever since the one time they dueled at the lecture that he attended. Magnus threw six very strong attacks his way, and Samuel was able to deflect or counter them with a flowing combination of magic. The last one, one that was a very intense advanced spell, almost caught him off guard but he remembered the counter at the last moment.

"Very good, Samuel. Strong but flexible, like a reed. Keep that up, and many will be able to learn from you."

Renee went next, and hers was a flurry that almost was not totally seen. Magnus took care to use the five strongest of the attacks, taking precise measure to push her a bit more. She came through it, and she noticed that Lewis, who already was in trouble, was shocked when she was finished.

"Very impressive, Renee. It is a very good thing that you are home here at Hogwarts Uni. Perhaps you have something to teach some of us as well."

Ashley looked to Riku and smiled, nervous still but not as nervous as she had been. She now realized that after her, Riku and one other student, Ryan, she thought his name was, were left. She took her position, and the Professor smiled. She then was sent five flowing attacks her way, the attacks a little faster than she was used to. She slipped into a kind of automatic state, countering every one of them with more grace than she though she had. When it was over, she didn't know if she should confess it was instinct or not, but Professor Magnus smiled and nodded to her.

"Well done, Ashley. Very good indeed, and very energetic as well."

Ashley was soon sitting down again, blushing as she didn't know she was doing her counters so fast. She looked to the others, and Renee and Samuel smiled, her turning to Riku letting her know she was now nervous for her.

Riku gave Ashley a warm smile as she made her way up for her turn, she wanted to let her know that she would be ok. When she got to the professor she faced him and raised her wand ready to deflect the spells, she cleared her mind and thought only about defending herself. When the spells came toward her she was quick to deflect them and although she was a bit sloppy with the blocks being it was her first time having to defend herself she did it successfully. As Riku made it back to her seat she heard a snicker and the words 'stupid mudblood' uttered from the direction where a few Slytherins were sitting. Her happy mood quickly turned sour after hearing those words and she sat down next to Ashley and put her head down and although she felt like crying she didn't not wanting to give them the satisfaction of knowing they had made her upset.

Ryan watched as everyone took their turn and when Riku had messed up a few times and still felt good about herself he was happy knowing by the young woman's expression that she was determined to fix those mistakes in the future. As Ryan got up he heard the Slytherin mutter the nasty words and he gave the young man a look that told him he wasn't happy at all. As Ryan made his way toward Professor Magnus he bowed like a proper duelist would then took his stance, when the first four spells were shot at him he was very smooth with his counters and it showed he had learned a lot over the years both in and out of school. When the fifth spell was shot at him he stopped it in mid air then shot it toward the Slytherin who said the nasty things to Riku. He knew his words had upset the girl and he was getting really tired of the nonsense coming from his fellow housemates.

Lorelai was impressed with how well everyone did in the class and laughed inwardly at how James handled the arrogant Slytherin who'd thought himself above everyone in the class. It had served him right to be made an example of like that and called out so publicly.

Norah watched with great intent as the other students took their turns and frowned when she heard the insult come flying out at Riku. Though she didn't know the girl, she knew all too well what it was like to be called such names and how badly that stung. So when Ryan took his turn and deflected the one spell at the guy who'd insulted her, she couldn't help but giggle out loud, not caring who heard her. She then looked over at Ryan and smiled at him, giving him a knowing look. That was one thing she truly adored about her friend--the way he stood up for his beliefs regardless of anyone. She truly admired that quality about him. Always had, always would.

It didn't bother him about any student who had not been in a dueling situation, as the reverse was the concern. A few of them had been in more than they should have been, and that was more of a reason to worry. Riku did well, though she was a little wobbly on her defense. She was green, but in the way that someone who had not had to deal with evil was. That pleased him with Riku, as well as many of the others.

"Well done, Riku. We will be working on maintaining better control on the deflections."

Magnus praised how Riku had performed, catching the insult only at the last moment. Something had told him he should let this one be dealt by one of the students, a feeling he sometimes got. He was very pleased when Ryan came up, and even more so when he deflected and sent the discharge at the student that said what he said. Magnus smiled, as the student was now frozen in place and was highly amused as he actually had been in an awkward position of reaching for something he dropped on the floor.

"Well done, indeed, Ryan. Excellent aim there. Now, I do hope there will not be any interruptions for the end of class, and by the way that will wear off about halfway through lunch, Philip."

He then nodded and smiled at the entire class, very pleased as he spoke.

"You all did very well, and I do have to say that I am pleased and surprised. I am sorry some of you have more experience than others, but I also see promise in all of you. You will be getting better, and I want you to all reread chapters one and two, as well as read chapters three and four. Tomorrow, we are going to go into the beginnings of wordless offense and defense, and how it will be developed. I want you all, for your end of the week homework, to work on your skills. I invite all of you to at least attend the first meeting of the Dueling Club, and if you are interested joining. I foresee a lot of good grades in this class for many of you. Finally, the list of the prefects as well as who has been selected as Head Guy and Girl for the year are up right outside the door. Class dismissed."

James smiled, letting them all know he was very sincere in all he said. He also waited for a moment, giving a discreet wink to Lorelai the first chance he could, letting her know again she did very well.
