Magnus had arrived in his classroom, having set the materials he was going to need on his desk and table. He pulled down one of the charts showing a diagram of what to look for in the most common situation that could be found in DADA. He then put his name on the board, soon to wait for the students to arrive that had his class first. He knew that each and every year had different levels that he would have to go for in their studies, but he also knew that some would need more help than others depending on their skills and talents. He knew some students' strengths and shortcomings, but he was also aware that even a period as short as summer when they had time to student and experiment on their own they would develop. He sat at the edge of his desk and waited, watching and waiting for them to come trickling it. He smiled, as each and every student would have as unique and intense experience of learning in his DADA class as he could make it, and he was more than ready. He already planned covering the first three chapters that day, and he knew that when he was through they would not realize how much they had learned. He had that reputation, and if he could any students that had questions or queries would have them answered post-haste.

He had arranged the room in a semi-circular pattern, wanting the students to feel the accessibility of both himself and the material completely. He also wanted them to know that they would have full attention, as well as knowing that they were to be able and free to help each other as well as look to him as the Professor. He whistled, knowing that before the day was over, Lorelai would also be taking his class and then she would get to excel as he always did. He expected that of all his students, for them to exceed expectations only for them to reach new ones or to make newer ones that pushed the bar up more.

Lorelai swallowed as she pushed open the door. This was James' class. Defense Against the Dark Arts... oh it was going to be hell being so close to him yet unable to touch, to kiss. Of course, she'd manage, but it was going to be difficult. She just hoped she'd managed to hold it together and excel in the class and earn a top grade like she was used to doing in all her classes.

"Hello," Lorrie said when she saw Katy, waving at the girl as she walked further into the room. Carefully, she took off her robe and draped it over her seat and placed her things down before sitting down and getting comfortable. Her eyes then fixed upon James who was at the front of the room. "Hello, Professor Magnus," she then said giving him a smile.

Norah walked in and smiled. "Hi Katy, Lorrie," she said waving to both girls as she slowly walked over to a seat and set her things down. She looked up and saw Professor Magnus at the front and gave him a smile as she sat herself down. "Good morning."

Ryan and Nicko made their way into the defense against the dark arts classroom and sat down next to each other, both boys had a rather angry look on their faces after the incident in flying class. Although angry Ryan sighed then fixed his tie and looked around at everyone in the classroom, "Good morning everyone" ,he stated smiling. Nicko just waved at everyone shyly and gave Katy a smile. "Good morning Professor Magnus" ,Ryan stated with a smile. He felt there was no need to bring the anger from another class into this one so he acted like a gentleman and kept the problems at the door out of respect for his fellow classmates and the professor.

Norah waved to both Ryan and Nicko as they entered and took their seats. She was trying her best to smile and stay cheerful, but it was difficult after the horrible incident that took place during Professor Donovan's Flying class. She'd managed to get herself, Ryan, Nicko and Katy detention in one fell swoop and all because she couldn't keep her calm. Ryan still definitely seemed upset and she knew she'd have to talk to him later, if he'd let her.

Holly walked after getting on to some students lingering in the hallway and not going to class. She smiled at the professor saying "Iam here checking on things and I have already been asked to help out detion if you need to add some students I be happy to take care of that for you".

Katy smiled back at Nicko and waved back to Ryan and nicko. She saw they both was angry so she got up and found a seat next to nicko and wispered "hey its going to be okay". Katy was still unnerved herself and given the chance.she would hit the slytherion boy again if she could.

Sam and Renee both had the DADA class for this period, and they ended up having to see together close to Lorelai. Renee was eager about this class, but Sam had told her as they just got in on time that Magnus was very thorough, though a bit from the hip. Both of them looked when Professor Johnson looked in, but Magnus' shake of the head told her, and the class, that was not going to be happening. Eventually, as Sam nodded and smiled at Lorelai, the class would be getting under way very soon.

Renee was nervous, not because she didn't understand the concepts and skills, rather that she didn't want to be seen as more than one of the other students. The back of her mind was very active, and she wished that she was just a normal young woman. It would make things better, but she also knew that was not the way it was. At least she was not what she was painted to be, a twisted "savior" of racist stupidity. As she got ready for the class, she could only shudder at the thought, reaffirmed in her goal to be her own person.

Magnus smiled, then his face became very serious as he looked at a Second Year Hufflepuff.

"You will stand up now and prepare yourself."

His wand was in his hand, the girl suddenly frightened as she summoned her wand. The bolt shot from Magnus' wand, and the girl was able to deflect and disperse it. Magnus smiled again, nodding as he let it be known with his manner she deserved to be in his class. He was turning to go to the board when he felt her eyes on him. She had not sat down, rather she was justly incensed.

"Professor, that was neither fair nor professional! What if I had not been ready? What if I had been a first year? What if I...."

She was stammering, trying to find the words. Magnus then held up his hand, both understanding and rebuke in his eyes and tone at the same time as he responded to her.

"That is the first lesson for today, Margaret. DADA is not fair or professional. Very much like the martial arts that PRofessor Braeden is teaching, there is no such thing as fairness nor real code of conduct. That doesn't give any of you right to stoop to the level of your adversary if he or she is a practitioner of the Dark Arts, but it does mean that the rules of standard conduct for a witch or wizard do not really apply. You are expected to follow it to the best of your ability, but any reactionary stance or tactic is bound only by the way THEY uphold the rules of wizardly conduct."

He was looking at one of the young men who had been over by Dorian last night, wanting to make things very clear on that point.

Ryan had been dwelling a bit on the situation that occurred in flying class when his attention was shifted quickly to Professor Magnus and the Hufflepuff girl. He was absolutely right on that matter and Ryan was liking the man already and was now giving his undivided attention to the class knowing he would have to be on his toes much like in Braeden's class and that was something Ryan liked.

Zoe slipped into the room after a break where she had worked on doing some writing or rather editing of her article for the school newspaper, but she now had the defense against the art arts, she was not a great magic user, passable maybe, but not great, she wasn't closer to being as good as her big brother for sure. That made her a bit nervous, she hoped she would be able to hack it, while she was in this class. She smiled as she saw her brother and followed him into the class, sitting near him, she felt a bit more nervous, she knew he was better then her at magic, and she hoped that she would be able to learn, but also not be shown up, or looked down upon just cause she wasn't nearly as good as her more magic talented older brother.


Samson smiled, he was curious about the class as he sat down he looked up and smiled as he looked around, it was going to be a most interesting class from what he could tell at the moment, it was his first class with his sister which would be most interesting as well. He was most curious as to what type of learner she had became after the two years learning by herself, and knew he would do his best to help

Lorelai sat fairly quietly in class, trying her best to stay calm and focused. It was difficult being in a class that was being taught by James. Being close to him and having to act like she was no different than everyone else was hard, but she knew she'd do her best. And being the quiet sort, she knew she'd succeed as well. When class finally started, she began taking various notes and she smiled inwardly at how James started off his class. It was very typical for him and she knew that though his methods were considered a little eccentric, everyone in the class would learn and learn well. And that everyone in the class would end up finding him to be a great teacher on top of things.

Norah was finding it difficult to concentrate in class, even with the grand display with the Hufflepuff girl. She was still bothered by what had happened in Flying even though Chadwick had given her the note of reassurance that he wasn't upset with her. What was bothering her now was the fact that she'd gotten three other students in trouble, one of whom was a very good friend. Looking over at Ryan, she hoped he'd still talk to her. Since coming to Secondary, she didn't have nearly as many friends as she'd had back in the days of primary, well, until the 'incident'... And he'd been one of the few that she'd stayed closer to. Letting out a sigh, she tried to find her focus so that she could concentrate. She knew this was a subject she'd have to be on top of just in case. She knew Chadwick would want that. Plus, given her recent string of bad luck and all the odd coincidences she'd been noticing lately, she really had to stay on the alert. Something odd was going on, she could feel it. And she had to stay on the ready.

When Katy told Nicko it would be alright he gave her a smile letting her know he was happy she was there. Ryan noticed Norah look at him and he gave her a a nod to let her know he wasn't ignoring her nor was he mad at her he knew it wasn't her fault everyone has a breaking point and the two Slytherins had definitely pushed Norah over hers and Ryan didn't blame her for that. The two boys sat and behaved themselves even though they were mad and even though they were angry their anger was not toward Norah or anyone else who decided to stick up for her.

Norah sat quietly, trying to pay attention to the lecture when she suddenly noticed Ryan looking over at her. Glancing his way, he gave her nod and look that made it clear he wasn't upset with her. Letting out a sigh of relief, she smiled and nodded back. She still felt unsettled, but at least she felt a little better that he didn't seem to be angry with her. She hoped her other friends weren't either and that the detention they all faced later that night wouldn't be too horrible. Luckily for them all, Chadwick was the one who'd given it out to them, so ultimately it would be up to him as to where they'd be going and what they'd be doing. Knowing that, she was sure the Slytherins who'd instigated everything would definitely have the harder time. Of that, she had absolutely no doubt.

Samuel shot Lorelai a quick look and smile, knowing that she was pleased with this. Samuel knew very well, mainly from lectures, that Magnus was not one to dawdle in his classes. The man had a history, one that gave him the right to be as from the hip and to the point as he was. He didn't believe in lying to students, and that was made more than painfully aware over the last twenty-four hours. Sam shot Renee a look, seeing that she was doing well despite last night and that was good.

Renee smiled at Ashely, who was very pleased both at how class began and that Riku was in the same class. Ashely had managed to get them in right before Professor Johnson had peeked in, and she was glad she was not in trouble for being late. She had heard of Magnus's reputation for the dramatic, and thought it was just for the lectures he did at other schools, but now as she was starting to take notes she knew that was not the case.

Renee was hiding her worries about the night before, but the way that Professor Magnus started his class made it clear that she, Nicko, Riku, Ashley, and all had done right. This was not about fair when dealing with people like that, and one only could be fair in gauge with how the Dark Practitioners were. Magnus spoke from experience, something that made her realize that she admired and felt badly for the man. She wondered how deeply his own encountered with Death Eaters had touched him.. and if he would ever regain the happiness he seemed to have lost because of it.

James was calm, his manner a part of his teaching as he continued. As he spoke, he spoke from experience, something they would not find in their texts.

"I wish it were fair, Margaret, but after centuries of fighting and infighting, as well as two of the worst Wars our Wizarding World has ever seen, I cannot lie to any of you. If you have any designs on becoming part of the Ministry, especially positions like Auror, Magical Law, and such, I have to be honest and tell you it is not fair. What I am going to teach you is not just survival, but also sacrifice and standing for what you believe. Magic is life, and it is a part of you. It both reflects and magnifies your life and what you do with it, and there is no middle ground."

He then smile, picking up the text.

Riku sat down next to Ashley when they got into the classroom she gave Nicko a wave then put her focus to the professor. She noticed Nicko sitting next to a young man she didn't see at the mixer and although he was a Slytherin it seemed as if both he and Nicko were getting along and that made Riku happy it was good to know that there was another Slytherin that wasn't like most.

When Professor Magnus spoke Ryan and Nicko listened very intently as they both had an interest in being aurors after graduating, Riku listened as well liking how the professor taught things, he was honest and thorough and Riku as well as Nicko and Ryan seen that as a very good thing. The three opened their books to chapter one eager to begin the lesson.

When Professor Magnus spoke to the class, both Lorelai and Norah listened rather intently to what he had to say. Lori smiled at how James had introduced the basics of the subject to the class. It was exactly like him to do things in that manner. Norah, meanwhile, sat quietly, head tilted as she watched in wonder. When he told the class to take out their books and begin with chapter one, both didn't hesitate to retrieve them and open them up to the first page of the first chapter, ready and eager to start learning.

James took them through the Basic Defenses, not upset to bring them all through the things they had already learned in Hogwarts Primary, or an equally good school elsewhere. He did notice that a few of the older students, bristled slightly. Not out of dislike of having to show they had mastered "the basics" but rather out of a touch of tedium. He then smile as he set down the book, after opening the new text to chapter two. He then spoke to them with what seemed a slightly conspiratorial tone.

"Now, we shall move from here into the heart of what you will be learning this year. Starting with the Second Chapter, we will be learning more advanced defense... especially wordless.. and some wandless... "

He knew that some students would very pleased, though he also knew a few that may not.

"That also means that, for some of the older students, arranging the more advanced lessons will have to come later. Some skills are only picked up by extensive study, Young Ones. I do not cast dispersions on your talents, skills, or intellects, rather it is a known fact. Some history to add to your study, if you like. The non-verbal spell which the legendary Molly Weasley used in her victory over Bellatrix Lestrange at the Battle of Hogwarts in 1998 has only been master by a grand total of three hundred wizards and witches since then."

One of the first years, another Hufflepuff, raised her hand. James nodded to her, letting her know she was allowed to ask questions.

"Professor... does emotion have to do with magic?? I mean in how it works??"

"Yes, a simple question, but not an easy answer. Nothing is REALLY easy in magic. Emotion, logic, and simple sense are frequently one and all lacking in a surprising number of the greatest practitioners of Magical Arts, Lucille. That is the second lesson you all need to understand. When it comes to magic in its whole, it is not something that you control or that controls you. It is something you have a symbiotic relationship with."

Samuel, Renee, and Ashley all were writing down all of the points he added on during the reading, as they were all wanting to know how much more they were going to be able to learn.

Renee noticed that, be it any of the First Years like herself all the way through to the few Seven Years in the class, he made a point to make it clear he was speaking to them both as a class and as an individual. It was there, that he did care how each student learned and improved.

Samuel noticed Lorelai, and was proud of her for keeping her emotions where it looked like she was just enraptured with his teaching style. He, as her "brother" knew better, but he was not about to draw any attention to that. He smiled at her, his eyes letting her know that he understood how hard it was being in class and not getting to talk to him on the level she wanted. When Magnus mentioned the one on one teaching and testing, he smiled and nodded at Lori. To others, it would look as if he was giving encouragement to another Sixth year who had some issues about learning, which he knew she would also understand.

Ashley smiled at Riku, also doing so to Ryan and Katy, wanting them to know they were among friends. Ashley felt better about a lot of things, especially with what Magnus said about emotion and all. When he said about magic being something you have a relationship with, not something you control or that controls you, one of the jerks from the other night that was closest to her spoke under his breath.

"Hogwash."

Ashley shot him a look, Renee also at the same time, that asked him if he had a problem. The young man looked at them both, then returned to his text. Ashley looked over at Renee, and they both laughed softly at a shared moment. Ashley then smiled again to Riku, very pleased they were both so focused on the class.
