Again, calmly, soldat Surnem brought the wrong jar back to the wagon, before climing onto the wagon, searching for where Valetni had stored his trunk. After about half a minute his efforts were met with success as he rifled through said trunk, calmly setting aside containers filled with unspeakable liquids, lifting up each one for Valetni to see, asking which one was the one, having no idea what 'formaldehyde' was.

"That's the one." Valetni pointed as the ignorant guard finally lifted out the correct one. Honestly, it was impossible to find learned help these days.

Beholding the jar filled with transparent liquid, a writing saying 'CH20' on it, Surnem carefully brought it to Valetni, handing it over, calm as always.

Valetni unstoppered the top, dropping the inflated gallbladder inside. The organ, the size and shape of a small pear, bobbed in the suspensory liquid for a few moments before reaching equilibrium. "Rainy day project for me." He said, by way of simple explanation, handing it back to Surnem. "Put that away for me, will you?" He coughed lightly, casting around for his cane and bringing himself to his feet. "I need to wash up, if no one has any objection." He said, holding up his gore streaked hands.

"You can burn the body now." He said, as an afterthought.

Urist stared out of the wagon quietly.

'S 'at a man e're cuttin' up o'er 'ere? he thought loudly, rather worried by the notion. Not ev'n 'ndoors, th' bur... bar... buhhh... BARBARIANS. 'At's it. He watched the organs removed, watched the shiny gold bits move. 'S prob'ly juss' a stat- neh, e's got innards. Statt-oos don' got innards... an' if they's guttin' a man cos 'e's shiny, 'ey'd gut me fer less. Prob'ly demon-kiss'rs, 's I thunk...

Urist looked for a convenient escape route, found none, and went back to thinking.

Vanessa ignored all that went on instead she walked around the place in a daze. She was telling herself (he is dead he is dead I killed him), she had a glossed over look to her eyes.

The gryphon nodded once to Morr, awaiting the healer's touch while watching Valetni work, impassively. If he was disgusted by the dissection he did not show it; in fact, as it went on, he watched with growing fascination.

"Did you learn anything interesting?"

As Elia set to work on the gryphon's talon, cleaning the wound as best she could before bandaging, she commented "This won't hold if you try to land from a flying-session, I suggest no more flying for you for now, best not for the entire next week..."

Hearing Valetni going to work, judging from the sounds of flesh tearing, his work seemed in stark contrast to hers, while she did her best to ignore the noises, she tried to drown it out by asking the gryphon "So, what do you think about our glorious leader, Morr? I've been watching him a little, you know, and strangely, I have barely ever seen him sleep. He also doesn't seem to have taken that helmet off even once since we began our journey."

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

While brother Valetni finished his work, allowing the Hellguards to take some of brother Zato's brew and begin lightning the corpse on fire, weibel Belatia subtly nudged the knight, gestured to the isolated figure of sister Vanessa "Sir, I think, unlike us, she isn't used to this-" she nodded at the burning corpse, the foul stench of burning flesh filling the air "- I must again say, I had her under observation and she hasn't done anything suspicious, but I just can't shake that feeling that taking her with us won't prove anything but a burden, she's no fighter. In combat, she's useless, and we are not going to fight just normal enemies, but the literal stuff of nightmares. For her own safety, I suggest we send her back with an escort as soon as we reach the outpost."

Throwing a glance at the weibel, before turning his gaze to sister Vanessa, Morr ordered "Keep the fire going until the beast is no more but a mound of ashes." before walking off to approach the apparently dazed sister, her eyes staring into nothingness as her lips moved, apparently talking to herself quietly.

"Sister Vanessa, is something the matter besides- " he gestured to the burning, mutilated carcass " - this? Know that we do not lightly fulfill such a deed and that we take no pleasure in it ourselves, nor can I demand that you get used to such. However, if you can not suffer this sight, I suggest you return to the wagon, we will be taking off soon."

Vanessa was jolted out of her daze and she spun around with the dagger in her hand ready to strike but when she saw it was Morr she put down her dagger and blushed. "sorry I guess the heavy smell of blood got to me do not worry I will get used to it and I kinda ignored the sight of the corpse". She then nodded her head at his words about going to the wagon and felt that she must for fear of showing anymore weird signs and give away her past. "I will go back to the wagon sense we will be taking off soon" with that she turned and made her way to the wagon and putting her dagger back she hopped into the wagon feeling totally angry with herself and she wanted to hit herself.

Valetni stopped, turning as he was addressed by the winged creature. He stared as it spoke to him, not watching the eyes, but the mouth. He was pondering how such a structure could properly articulate words. Even if the vocal chords and other apparatus were identical to a human, and judging by the shape and structure of the neck, they were most certainly not, the beak itself would certainly interfere with any attempts to communicate. He'd have to wait until he could take a closer look inside, poke around a bit before he would have his answers. For now, he would simply have to make do with observation, at this rate, the griffin would have a journal all to itself.

Valetni blinked, suddenly remember where he was. "Did you say something?" He rasped at the beast.

The gryphon's beak opened slightly with its words, but Valetni was right; without lips it should not be nearly so skilled at human speech. Even those few birds skilled at mimicry would have failed to capture the gryphon's annunciation.

The creature hissed as a bandage was pulled tight around his talons, taking a moment to breathe before he addressed the healer's concern. "I will remain on the ground for the time being, if I am afforded the choice. Thank you for your assistance. As for Morr, well... He seems a good man. He addresses me with a title I have not earned, but does so with conviction; his orders, thus far, have been sensible. I cannot speak to his sleeping habits, nor his reluctance to show his face, but I have seen much stranger behaviour from others in the temple." The gryphon was looking sidelong at Valetni while he says this, and his eyes met the man's.

"I was inquiring as to the results of your examination. That assailant seemed inhuman, at the least; have you found an explanation for his speed and strength?"

Valetni shrugged.

"It's some sort of daemonic taint, I can't explain this shit." He remarked, staring at the beast. "The fusion of gold and flesh occurred in such a way that it would inhibit normal function of the human body." He paused. "I'm sure that is something you could be well acquainted with."

"As it stands, this sort of thing lies entirely outside my area of expertise, I deal with the natural world, not that of the unnatural." He coughed for several moments, leaning on his cane.

"Demons are not of this realm, and as such, do not heed its laws as we do." Zato commented, leaning on his own cane.
"Indeed, they can fly like birds, make matter where there was once none, and still more. It is not surprising that they have found a way to make metal work like flesh."
He took a long swig from a bottle.

Keeping his gaze on her as sister Vanessa departed, Morr came to the conclusion that weibel Belatia seemed to be wrong in this particular regard. This woman, surprised and shocked, did not try to raise her arms in defence as any untrained human would, but instead grabbed and prepared her weapon for a quick counter-attack.
Then she was apparently embaressed about something, perhaps she had been unwilling to reveal a certain ability to handle a weapon. Curious.

But nonetheless, if it was her wish to remain private and it did not lead to the expedition's active disadvantage, then he would not bother her, though she should be aware that sooner or later, her capability would have to be used, if only for self-defence.

The corpse of the madman properly cremated and the Hellguard's as well as Swiftbeak's wounds tended, Morr ordered some Hellguards to search for the second weapon the gryphon had mentioned, the rest to saddle up or return to the wagon, while he himself helped Elia carry the now unconscious Hellguard onto the carriage, before he turned to Swiftbeak to solve the last concern.

"Sir Swiftbeak, with your wound, I must ask you, are you capable of keeping up on foot? I will not have it that you will fly, this wound would open as soon as you tried to land."

The gryphon tilted its head at Valetni's assertion that he 'can't explain shit.'

"I would have thought such rudimentary processes as defecation to not be beyond you, but perhaps you are not so skilled. There is no shame in knowing your limitations." The creature's immutable expression gave no indication as to his sincerity.

"In either case, I suppose you are correct; I am, in truth, quite curious how I function myself, though I do not wish to give anyone the opportunity to learn. Have you disposed of the gold, as well? We may be able to trade it for provisions, if needed."

Before Swiftbeak received an answer, Morr approached; the knight's question was an unexpected one. "Your concern is appreciated. In all honesty, I fear all but the most delicate landing would cause greater injury; I will still fly if you would prefer to not be left without a scout, but if I could merely walk alongside the horses that would be preferable.'

"We are going to move at the fastest pace the wagon can hold, if you can not suffer this, I will reduce our speed." Morr told the gryphon, before a Hellguard, soldat Truckwell, the sister of the other soldat Truckwell, handed him the dagger the madman had wielded before being 'hit' by Swiftbeak.
Again, the weapon was mediocre at best, though now as he beheld it a little closer at the handle, there seemed to have been something smaal carved in. Barely identifiable, it could have been a simple, albeit badly drawn, circle, or... a fanged maw.

Giving the weapon back to soldat Truckwell while ordering her to also get the sword and lock both up tight, to be brought to the outpost to send them back to the Temple later just in case they had been responsible for the man's madness.

Looking back at the wagon, he had to make sure everyone was accounted for "Is anyone missing? We will make haste without pause, we have wasted enough time." he called out to them, while mounting his own horse.

At Morr's word, Zato returned to the wagon. He had enough time to stretch his legs while he was outside, now he lay back down in the wagon, and his head hit a barrel with a clunk as he sat up against it.
"Sleeping is truely the fastest way to travel" he said with a yawn.

The expedition made for the journey, up the path to the outpost, the fastest the wagon could suffer, it was a rickety journey for the carriage's occupants, creaking under the speed it was subjected to.

While everyone was tense, silence mostly reigned, the journey went by without trouble once more, though this calmness rather seemed like a facade now, for out there, there could be any one currently beset by a madman like one had beset the currently unconscious Hellguard.
The red of the sun's setting was visible on the horizon when the outpost finally came into their sight, its fortifications of solid black stone, the surroundings devoid of life it seemed, trees forcibly removed to deny an enemy as much useful ground and wood for siege weapons as possible.

The ground here appread to be ragged, tell-tale remnants of how once a grand amount of land had been forced to fall in on itself in the tunnel networks.
Soon, guards became visible on the walls, all of them wearing the familiar rust-red. The expedition coming into sight, the Hellguard's colors easily visible, though they certainly also spotted the gryphon in all his unnaturality, the news of the creature having been accepted by Wolfram had been purposefully spread by the latter for just an occasion like this they opened the gates without question, calling for the resident commander.
Passing through the gates, the interior of the outpost consisted on several solid wooden buildings arrayed in something of a circle, serving the purpose of storage, barracks, stables, armory and smithy, unremarkable in most regards.

Had it not been for the grand memorial erected in the middle, all the buildings facing it, it being that of a lovingly-rendered Hellguard sculpture, crossbow in one hand, sword in the other, the former loaded and aimed at the gates, the latter raised in defiance against all that dared standing against the might of the fortress. Interestingly enough, it also appeared to double as a sort of well. Morr resolved to ask one of the inhabitants about this, as well as spend some of his time at the memorial itself.

Said commander, a man in his thirties with early-greying hair and some slight scars on his face, yet still a muscular build, wearing a standardized uniform instead of his armor, soon stepped out of one of the buildings, flanked by two of his subordinates, he ignored Morr, throwing a w and instead approachd weibel Belatia, while gesturing at the unconscious Hellguard on the wagon "Sergeant! What is the meaning of this?" he asked, voice calm, yet precise and sharp.

"Sir, I'm not the commanding officer of this expedition, I'm under the command of sir Morr-" she nodded at Morr's massive form "-, granted this command under order of Wolfram himself."

Eyes narrowing as he turned to Morr, the commander adressed him "Very well, sir Morr, I must ask, what happened to private Selene? I certainly hope you took care of her." while nodding to his two subordinates to take the now named Selene, as gently as they could, sister Elia following them just in case.

"Soldat Selene was attacked by a demonically possessed madman and lost her arm as she battled bravely, but the inhuman beast cared only for murder and little about itself, she would have had her life taken, had it not been for sir Swiftbeak,-" he gestured to the wounded gryphon "- who managed to defeat the monster, though soldat Selene still helped via liberal application of her crossbow. After that, we burned the monstrosity while sister Elia, the one who just followed those two under your command, stabilized her. Besides that, our orders are to investigate the rumors that roam the High Seas, for the purpose of which we are aiming to travel to Pikewall from here, as well as restock you." Morr stated matter-of-factly, voice remaining emotionless as always.

Throwing another glance at the gryphon, the commander replied, alarmed "A demonically possessed man?", hands balling into fists, he continued "I must thank sister Elia then... and... sir Swiftbeak." turning to the gryphon, with some effort, he said "You have my thanks, sir Swiftbeak." Turning back to the rest of the expedition, he went on "Now, while I may have many questions, I can see you are all tired from a day of travelling. I will have beds provided for you in the barracks, your horses brought into the stables. Sir Morr, when you have the time, I must ask that you come see me later in the barracks, there are many things that require clarification."

Nodding again, the commander retreated back into the building, most certainly said barracks, as other Hellguards arrived who began to unload the barrels from the wagon, while others led the horses, the Hellguards under Morr's command dismounting, to the stables.

Staring at the memorial for a moment, Morr soon turned to weibel Belatia "Weibel Belatia, always have two of your men guarding Urist, you have command for now, if you have need of me, seek me at the memorial." before beginning to walk towards the statue.

Mary felt the cart pick up speed, and after a long period of bumps and jumping she felt the entire wagon slow to a gradual stop. She heard muffled voices outside, but before she could unplug the cork from her spy-hole the entire barrel began to moved...

Her world stumbled and rocked as the barrel was lifted up and moved about in the air, coming down hard on the floor she winced slightly at the pain as her body tumbled against the side, but before the small girl could do anything about it she had started moving again, bumping against the insides of the wooden container she managed to pull out the cork to hear "-eah, this lot is to go in the stock room, mighty nice of them to resupply us like this-" it was a strange voice, one she'd never heard before, but it was what they were saying that worried her most.

"NO!" she managed to squeak, before quickly clasping her tiny hands to her mouth.

The barrel stopped moving for a moment, maybe they hadn't heard her and they'd got to the stockroom already...

Yes, that would be it.

"Wha-?" came the cut-off reply, as the Hellguard, a stout man called Jim, heard the high-pitched outcry, a girl's voice, from within the barrel he was holding. Puzzled, he set it down, opened the now loose lid.

Out tumbled a girl of no less than thirteen. "Oi, why'd they send us a girl as resupply?"

Mary tossed and turned as the barrel was tipped, eventually landing cross-legged with a small "oof" facing the wagon and it's accompanying adventuring party. Odd strands of hair had flicked their way in front of her face during the tumble, and her large eyes beheld the scene before her.

Feathers the duck fluttered equally inelegantly out of the barrel and over her head, landing in her tiny lap, it looked from the small girl's shocked face to the startled ones of the gathered monks and Hellguard before settling down and letting out a long "QUAAAAAAAACK".

Mary's lip began trembling and as her eyes started to water she moved the sleeves of her sweater up to her face. Large wet tears suddenly moved to roll down her cheeks and she began to cry.

"What's going on in here?", Zato asked as he stood a few meters away from the two men, a little thankful that he finally found people so soon after getting lost.
"I doubt a girl would be in a supply barrel." he said, as he stepped forward, cane tapping on the ground.
"In fact, that sounds like a live duck. Have you two been drinking?"

Mary's eyes and head flicked round to look at the blind monk, sleeves still wiping away tears.

"Muh-Muh-stur Za-a-ahtoooo" she mumbled through the tears.

"I-I-Ihm So-o-o-rrrry" again choking back tears.

The small duck nuzzled against her stomach, her face now hidden behind the large sleeves of her sweater.

The little girl's head was dipped slightly, the eared hood of her sweater obscuring the child's tear filled face further.

"Mary?!" Zato exclaimed, more surprised than anything.
"How did you even? But.... oh my." the girl had started crying. Zato's paternal instincts kicked in.
"Come here." he knelt down and spread his arms.

"Errr, uh..." Jim hadn't expected this at all to result from carrying a simple barrel. Shaking his head, he walked back to the wagon, chose a barrel, carefully shook it, making sure not another girl hid in there.
