Elizabeth smiled at the small little farm.it made her think about her grandparents farm back home. It was very quaint. When they got into the house, she noticed the other men. She could tell they were related to matthew. She blushed as she extended her hand to his brother, her arm brushing past matts a little."its very nice to meet you both. Umm do you perhaps have a place to lay down? I'm feeling a little light headed" she said, holding her hand to her forehead, her other one gripping matthews arm a little.

Haley walked in behind the other three and gave a small wave to the two men inside the house.
"Hey I'm the Haley..." She mumbled, pushing her hair behind her left ear.
She looked to Elizabeth after hearing her mention she was light-headed.
"She is looking pale...maybe some water?...water for all of us please...?" She spoke, her voice trailing off at the end of her statement.

"Oh yeah here."
Matthew said, grabbing a trio of large glasses from the cabinet over the dishwasher and setting them by a large square water filter of sorts hooked up to the sink faucet. He flicked the switch attached to the large faucet head and turned on the cold water, sliding the first glass beneath the plastic/rubber hose that extended from the top of the expensive looking filter.
"Kangen Water 9.5..."
a robotic voice chimed. There was a pause then crystal clear water started to trickle into the cup, filling it up after a few seconds. Matthew passed out the first glass to Elizabeth, the second to Haley and the third to Nicki.
"Here honey, why don't you come lie down on the couch."
a slightly short and chubby older lady said, coming into the kitchen. She was incredibly tanned just like Hugh and had shiny black hair pulled into a ponytail, a few tiny strands of silver hair visible upon closer inspection and a pair of glasses perched on the bridge of her nose.
She led Elizabeth into the living room, helping her sit down on the dark blue couch while Matthew stepped in and tossed his duffle bag into the floor, ejected his rifle's magazine and the round in the chamber then propping it up against the bag.
"I'm Jaime, Matthew's mom."
the 50-something year old lady said.
"Hannah, bring me a cool wet washrag."
she called.
A 19 year old girl with long dark brown hair and fairly pale skin darted out of the bathroom a minute later with a wet cold wrag, handing it to her mom who gently layed it on Elizabeth's forehead.
"She looks a bit dehydrated."
Jeff observed.
"All three of you do to varying degrees."
The girl cleared her throat, reminding them of her presence.
"Oh yeah, that's my sis Hannah. This is Nicki, Elizabeth and Haley."
Matthew explained.
Hannah smiled excitedly, "Nice to meet you."
she said with a little wave.
"Hannah why don't you get our guests something to eat."
Jaime suggested. Hannah sighed and darted to the kitchen returning a minute later with plates for the girls a small piece of sausage, some eggs, biscuits and gravy on each one.

Matthew grunted and sat down on the dark colored futon situated next to the sliding glass door that led to the side deck/porch, leaning forward and interlocking his fingers, looking totally relaxed.
"So girls, do you have anywhere you're headed? Anything you need?"

Elizabeth was very thankful for the older woman helping her. As they laid her down, she instantly felt a thousand times better. Maybe she was just tired of running. as she sipped the water with the rag on her forehead, she sighed. finally, she could relax without having to worry about a monster chasing after her. She looked over at Matt as he spoke. She did find him highly attractive, but she knew that she couldn't attach herself to easily. this was a time of surival and a time where those you love most could be taken from you in an instant.
"Well, I was headed back home, but I found out all those I knew are dead, so now I'm just looking for anyplace to stay that I can feel safe. And find actually people to talk to"

Haley took the water gratefully and chugged it down, sending her esophagus into a world of stretching pain.
She walked over to the couch and sat on the floor next to Elizabeth's Legs.
"Well my family is dead." She stated bluntly, breathing into her empty glass, making it fog up.
She looked around the room from person to person. "I have no idea about my friends...they uh...everything just happened so fast in...uh in Louisiana." She sighed.

"Oooh! I'm so sorry for your loss."
Jaime said softly, hugging both the girls tightly.
Matthew's expression was, as always, grim and serious.
"That must be terrible, losing your family and homes."
he turned slightly to look up at his father, his eyebrows raising slightly.
Hugh nodded wordlessly and Matthew looked back to Haley and Elizabeth,
"You can stay here indefinately. If you want to."
There was an excited scream from one of the bedrooms and Hannah sighed, going over to the room and returning with a three year old girl with shoulder length dark brown hair and a very chubby one year old boy with dark brown curls.
The girl cautiously approached Elizabeth, Haley and Nicki, a bit cautious of strangers.
The baby boy however squeeled excitedly and ran over to them, grinning and showing a mouthful of tiny teeth.
He petted Jaime's knee then layed his head on Elizabeth's side, cooing adorably and hugging her.
The family chuckled,
"This is my brother Luke and my sister Hope."
Matthew introduced, Hope waving shyly.
"They're adopted."
he explained.

Elizabeth sighed to herself, hugging Haley a little. She knew how it felt to lose loved ones.
"I know how you feel, I lost all my family and friends as well"
She hugged Jaime back, loving the warmth her hugs brought.
She smiled at Matthew. He was so gracious to let them stay there.
"Thank you...thank you so much. I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Elizabeth winced at the sound of the scream, but her heart warmed at the sight.
She saw 2 adorable little kids running out.
They reminded her of her little brothers and sisters, and she welcomed the hug of the little boy.
"H-hi sweetheart. Aww, thank you for the hug. I really needed that"
She grinned, hugging the boy close to her.
She smiled at Hope, waving to her.
"Hi, I'm Elizabeth"

Hope stared at Elizabeth for a second, pouting slightly then finally said,
"My Hope!"
grinning, she darted over to Elizabeth too mimicking her brother and laying her head on Elizabeth, hugging her.
"Hi Elizbeff!"
she squeeled.
Matthew smiled, ignoring the children's antics and tried to reply to Elizabeth,
"Thank him, it's his place."
he said, jerking his thumb towards Hugh.
Jeff groaned as he flopped down on the futon next to his brother, tossing his rifle atop Matthew's duffle bag.
"Are any of you injured?"
he asked, glancing at the girls.

Haley nodded and accepted the hug from Elizabeth and Jaime even though Jaime's touch and presence reminded her of her 17 year old sister Kenzie whom she hasn't seen since three days before Hell broke loose, but she bared through it.
It wasn't until she heard the children's squeal that she thought she may die right there on the hardwood flooring.
A small baby boy and a little girl came into the room and Haley froze, backing away a few inches as if she could just blend into the couch.
She looked at the small boy and immediately saw little John Micheal her two year old brother.
and the little girl she saw Emily, her 8 year old sister.
Haley attempted to just play cool and quiet and not draw attention to herself as she forced her tears back and looked everywhere but the two small children.
'Fuck, Haley keep it together' she screamed in her head.

She looked at hugh and nodded.
"thank you, I appreciate your hospitality sir." She said standing up and awkwardly coughing before she walked and stood on the otherside of the couch, allowing Elizabeth to gain all the children's affection.
Haley couldnt handle it like Elizabeth could.
She wonder how she could without breaking down and crying, suppose it's one of those laugh or cry moments, still Haley held a special Admiration for Elizabeth now.

Matthew's eyes tracked Haley as she moved across the room, his expression calculating, deep in thought.
"Haley you look a bit ill, maybe you should have a seat out on the deck in the sunshine."
he suggested, nodding towards the sliding glass door and giving her a deep and meaningful look.
Hope and Luke meanwhile, remained occupied with Elizabeth, giggling while Hope gently played with her hair.

Haley caught Matthew's look and nodded.
"Yea, sure.." She sighed as she stepped around the other people on her way to the back doors.

She chewed on her bottom lip and stepped outside, taking a deep breath of fresh air and taking a seat in one of the patio chairs.
She closed her eyes and pushed the memories of her siblings into a deep dark place, away from the front of her mind where she could coupe.

The sky was beautiful and she took that moment to stare and enjoy the simple thing in life. Just the fucking blue sky.

Matthew glanced around quickly, noticing everyone was distracted with Niki, Elizabeth and the babies then hopped up and stepped outside as well, closing the sliding glass door behind him and settling into the patio chair next to Haley's, brushing some cat hair off of it and staring out across the massive backyard, ringed with trees and ending in a large pond, roughly 15 feet deep.
He sat there in silence for a moment, thinking and considering every word he'd say before finally glancing over at Haley,
"Are you...alright?"
he asked quietly, folding his hands together.
"You look depressed."
It saddened him to see such a lovely young thing so beaten down and saddened.
He slowly reached over and took her hand, ducking his head slightly to peer up into her eyes.

Haley chewed on her bottom lip for a few moment's thinking about how she'd answer.
She didn't know him very well yet, so she wasn't exactly comfortable spilling her life story to him right away; She didn;t even look at him for a few moment's, but allowed him to hold her hand.
It was warm against her cold dainty ones.

After a few seconds she turned her blue eyes to meet his gaze.
"I don't mean to be the buzz kill, and I apologize for depressing you with this mood if I have. I just...well... we've all lost people. You know Elizabeth has, she said so and I suppose, I-uh, I just can't handle it like her, I just-"
She paused to hold back tears that were threatening to spill over.
Haley took a deep breath.

"When I see your family, don't get me wrong, they are beautiful, even if they were taken in, the two youngest...I just see, my lost and deceased family in them, So I'm just having a small difficult time...uh, finding comfort being close to them, it still hurts... you understand right?" She asked, a small sob attaching itself to her last word and she had to turn her face away.
Haley always hated crying in front of people, even before the mighty shit storm whenever she cried she never did it in front of people, her excuse was always: "I'm an ugly crier."

Playing with the two children gave Elizabeth a since of hope. She knew these kids were scared, they had to be, but they were putting up a good front and enjoying the little things in life.
She knew Haley was having a tough time with all of this. Elizabeth was as well, but she was such an emotional person as it was that she learned when to put on her mask and hide her emotions. Truly inside, she was screaming and crying and dying.
She had lost alot of family and friends just like Haley and one very important secret that she hadn't revealed to anyone was:she was pregnant.
Elizabeth had met the father of the child while at school. They had had a relationship, but things just fell a part. She was planning on tell him and her family that she was pregnant when everything went down. Now, she was too afraid.

Her heart ached for Haley when she saw her go outside. she knew this girl was in a tough spot. They were the same age, she had to try and be a friend to her. She kissed both kids on the forehead
"I'll be back in a little bit ok. i'm gonna go see if Haley's alright"
She smiled as she got up and walked to the back door.
She peaked her head out, trying not to interrupt the conversation
"Umm matt, is it umm ok if I talk to haley? i can come back later if you want"

Nikki was glad when she got the glass of water and thanked the woman graciously, although she was a bit surprised when Haley walked in. But all in all she was just happy to be away from those zombies.

Upon hearing the other girls' sob stories, Nikki couldn't help but feel sorry for them, but that only made her think of what her family might be going through in California.

Her thoughts were interrupted by a squeal, until she saw the children. Hope was so cute, she reminded her of the little sister she always wanted. And Luke, was absolutely adorable, but she didn't let anyone see those feelings, instead she hid them behind a wall of indifference. but when both girls left they kids had no one to entertain them, so they nearly tackled me saying "Hello Nikki. Play with us.". However her first reaction was to pry them off of her, but looking into their innocent eyes, she caved and began playing hide and seek with them.

Matthew soothingly rubbed his thumb over the back of Haley's hand, sliding a little closer to her.
"I'm so sorry for your loss,"
he said softly.
"I've lost a couple neighbors and friends in all of this but no direct family members. A few of my cousins may or may not be dead and I don't know about my uncle, aunt and cousins. I haven't lost any siblings though."
He gently wrapped an arm over her shoulders, leaning a bit closer.
"Do you wanna' talk about it?"
Just then, Elizabeth joined them. He glanced up from his seat at her.
"Sure. I'm not that great at consoling people but another girl might be able to help."

Elizabeth smiled down at Matt and nodded. When he stood up, she kinda gave his arm a quick squeeze.
"Thank you" She said, looking up into his eyes with happiness along with a subtle sadness.
She then took her place next to Haley. She was hoping that she could sort of help this girl in this horribly sad time.she wanted to connect with her more, try to see if maybe she could be a friend.
"I know what you're going through. I know in there, I seemed calm, but on the inside I'm dying inside. I've been through a lot, especially over the past year and I've had to learn how to conntrol my emotions or else I would be a complete wreck.I lost my whole family and over half of my friends. I've never been on my own before. Seeing those 2 kids in there with those smiles on there faces gave me hope."
She looked up into Haley's eyes, Elizabeths own filled with tears.

"I-I have a secret. I haven't really wanted to say anything to anyone, but I feel it's important to atleast tell you now"
She looked down, her whole body shaking. This was so nerve wracking.
"The truth is....I'm pregnant"

Haley listened to Matthew and was about to kindly tell him a small portion but not all, then Elizabeth popped outside asking if she could have a word.
Haley shrugged, becoming a bit embarrassed from the sudden attention and watched as Elizabeth took her seat next to her.
She listened, nodding when appropriate until she mentioned her secret.
Her head shot up and she caught eyes with her.

"I'm the first person you've told?" She asked her eyes suddenly brimming with tears.
Haley wasn't a crier, under any other circumstances Haley would always be the last person you see shedding a tear, in fact she was known for always trying to make a joke all the time. It was just difficult to joke and be strong when the dead was walking, loved ones were lost or dead and she was surrounded by people she hardly knew.

Haley chewed on the side of her mouth and sighed.
"I knew we only just met but.. your secret is safe with me, I'll help you get what you need to...uh... grow this baby the right way.. as much as you can in these times.

Elizabeth smiled, wiping away her tears. She feared that they would think of her differently.
She shook her head, laughing a little bit to try and lighten the mood.
"Thank you.i mean, I plan on telling everyone, but I feel a special connection with you."
She looked down again, tears in her eyes.
"You remind me of my cousin. We were extremely close. She was like a sister to me. And when I found her almost ripped to shreds, I completely lost it. Right then and there, I could have died. I'm usually an extremely emotional person, but right now I can't be for some reason. It's like God wants me to stay strong for the baby."
There was a long pause before she started up again. She needed a little time to collect her thoughts..

"And before you ask, he doesn't have a father. We had a close relationship, but he wasn't a very good man. And I was planning on telling everyone, but then all this shit happened and well, he turned into one of those brain hungry zombies. I, I had to shoot him in the face"
She jumped as she saw Matt come out, wiping away her tears to look better.

Haley nodded "I see, well you, and your baby have us... do you know how far along you are?" She asked, eyeing her tummy.
She gave a small smile, her attitude toward things improving. When Elizabeth chose to tell Haley before the others it gave her a feeling of importance and Haley hadn't felt important in ages.
She nodded again thinking about it.

Matthew returned once the girls had finished their conversation and he his with his family.
He settled into a chair on the opposite side of the table and folded his hands together on the glass tabletop, leaning forward slightly as he spoke.
"We discussed it for a while and decided we should be able to keep you all here indefinately. But we don't have enough beds so, one of you will have to use a sleeping bag on the floor, one of you will have to sleep on the couch and the other on the futon. The couch folds out and the futon folds down so it shouldn't be too uncomfortable and all three are next to the wood stove so you'll be warm all night."
he paused, tapping his fingers against each other as he thought then said,
"If you're going to be staying here we're going to have to ask that you assist us with a few things here and there. Bringing you two out on a scavenging trip is the last thing I want to do, so don't worry about that. My dad could use a hand in the garden and my Mom and sister could use some help washing dishes and watching the kids. Be and Jeff will be gone more often, scavenging for more supplies now that you guys are staying with us so we won't be able to do it all."
A very furry, dark grey cat hopped up on the table and meowed once, slinking over to an empty chair and curling up in it.
Matthew stroked the cat's head for a moment then asked,
"Are either of you especially good at anything? Medical training? Culinary skills? Gardening?"

Elizabeth smiled. It felt so good to finally get that off of her chest. She would tell everyone eventually, but right now it was just important for her to tell Haley.
"I'm a few months along. And no, I don't. I wasn't able to go to the doctor in time to find out. So, it's gonna be a surprise I guess"
She giggled as the 2 girls walked back inside.
She sat down on the couch as the two little ones came up, and sat next to her playing with her hair.
she listened to Matt talk and was very excited to hear that they could stay.
"Oh my gosh. Thank you, thank you so much. You people are truly a blessing"
Elizabeth had a place to stay, and people to help her out. She would definitely try to help his mother out in the garden and do what ever she could to help run the household smoothly.
"ummm, I can cook. I used to do it all the time for my family before everything happened"

Jaime and Hannah both smiled,
"Excellent, that'll free Mom and my sis up to help in the garden or watch the kids."
Matthew said.
He paused, glancing at Niki, Haley and Elizabeth before finally asking,
"Can any of you operate a firearm?"
In the old world, shooting was a hobby and it still was. Knowing how to fight was a necessary life skill however. The difference between shooting and fighting had been drilled into him since he turned fourteen and recieved his rifle as a birthday present. "Faggots shoot! I fight!" his oldest brother, a SWAT Officer had barked like a true drill instructor. Anyone could plink tin cans one at time, very carefully but it took special training to sprint from cover to cover, firing off quick bursts to suppress your enemies and take another human life.
He'd yet to do so. Zombies he'd killed plenty of but no people. He was always alert for bandits or raiders though, a noose already tied in case any of them were taken alive and a full magazine of ammunition always ready to make sure the noose wasn't needed...

Hearing Matthew ask if they knew how to operate a firearm,
Nikki raised her hand like a nervous kid in class before nervously saying, "If you count a 9A-91 Avtomat, then I do"
She had always been a bit shy when talking about her fighting and firearm experience, but when you have an extremely over protective, Latino, gun smuggler for a father, you pick up on a lot of things, including how to handle a firearm.
