Changing Tides

Brenna nodded and followed him up to the meadow. She looked around with wide eyes, enjoying the view it offered. She smiled and trotted after him, going up to the hill. She stood on top and looked around at all of the beauty surrounding her. She gave a satisfied purring sound and smiled. "This is gorgeous," she said. Her ears were perked up, turning toward every sound. She smiled and looked down at him, slowly sitting beside him. She began to eat some of the bread, gnawing on it hungrily. She sighed and looked up at him. "It's perfect," she said. She smiled and ate, pulling hunks of bread off and chewing. She then ate some meat, tasting the salted goodness as she chewed. She smiled happily, so glad that he had not died when his father had tried to kill him.

"Thank you," she said. "For everything."

He smiled "I'm glad you're enjoying yourself, I figured you had been through a lot and decided to do something fun, and give you time to relax."

He laid back and closed his eyes enjoying the sounds of the world around him, the sound of birds singing, and the sound of insects call-

Suddenly he shot up, and turned to Brenna "Leave everything, and Run!" He yelled right as an arrow embedded itself right where his head had been.

Brenna looked at him in confusion. An arrow whipped past her and embedded in the ground where his head had been, and she scrambled up, grabbing his arm and trying to get him to run with her. Her ears flattened against her head and her tail twitched angrily. Were they after him or her? She could see either being a possibility. She should've known the war with her cousin and his father wasn't over.

One he was up he scooped her up and loped at a full run easily starting to outpace the hidden archers. Many people could replace the sound of birds, but to replace the full sound of insects took special tools and talents that made it much harder, and it was the distinct lack of insects that alerted him.

Suddenly he changed directions, and started to zig and zag making it harder to hit them. When he got the the horse, he quickly turned around and was able to see the coat and arms of the archers coming after them, they were similar ones to the group of warriors that had attacked them when he was taking Brenna to his tower the first time.

He delved into one of the packs and pulled out two short curved swords. He smacked the horse's rear to get it going, and turned to face the archers there were only 5. A smile crossed his face "This is going to be fun." Then he ran at them, swerving left and right, they tried to hit him, but he used the swords to block the shots and soon was too close for the arrows, they switched to daggers, but they were clearly outclassed. The fight only lasted a few seconds, and when it was over the horse carrying Brenna cantered over to him.

"I'm tired of having to deal with enemies who hide in shadows, It's time that I cleaned house. I'm assuming the coat of arms on those archers are you're cousin's crest. I think it's about time we took care of him." He said darkly.

Brenna squeaked when he pulled her into his arms. She held onto his shirt, then gripped onto the horse as he placed her on it. She watched as he slashed away at the archers, trying to get at them. As they fought back, she recognized her cousin's fighting techniques. She tensed, waiting it out. The horse naturally walked back to him when it was over.

She picked a crest, torn off of clothing by the tree, and held it in her fingers, looking at her cousin's crest mixed with her crest. She gave it to him. "My father and mother must be dead. That's my crest and my cousin's, together." She frowned quietly. These people were trying to deal with her to make sure she couldn't cause any trouble.

"It won't be easy. Everyone loves him. He's good in battle, smart, a fighter, and dangerously kind to keep people from suspecting anything."

He smiled a dark smile, one without any joy, one a predator might give before pouncing upon its prey "Good, then at least it'll be a challenge."

Pulling himself up onto the horse behind Brenna he maneuvered it back towards the tower. "My people will survive without me, I only after all handle general administration, and enforce order here. I find that most people do best and are most happy when they have control over their general lives. We will need to decide how best to present ourselves. What are your thoughts earlier, have you decided to be presented as a slave or a wife. As my wife you're position would be unasailable from any lords or ladies. As a slave you could get close to the staff, after all they do say the servents know everyting. Your duties will be similar either way, what do you prefer."

Brenna bit her lip. She didn't think he was thinking this through. She saw it as too dangerous, that he was going to get himself killed. Then where would she be? She'd be passed down to the next lord, and there were no guarantees that a new master wouldn't be like her current master's father.

She considered his question, sighing quietly as they rode back toward the tower. "Umm," she murmured quietly. "I suppose as your slave." She might be a bit safer that way, in all actuality. If she were presented as his wife, it'd soon get out, and her cousin would set out to finish her off. If she were a slave, then at least he might be satisfied that she was in bondage under another person, that she couldn't come and take him down. She sighed and looked back at him. "And what will my duties be?" she asked curiously. She remembered his father, how he had been determined to hunt her down and rape her, how he knew her anatomy and what made her tick. She was afraid of finding someone like that again, someone who'd take her away. "Will I stay in the tower while you go after my cousin?"
