A new love (Burning Amber x Me)

Katie had wandered into the kitchen after coming downstairs, putting the food she laid out for dinner the night before back into the freezer. It would have been really unfortunate if the food had gone bad. Once that was done though, she went back into the living room and looked at the pictures hanging on the wall. They were of their family back when Derran was was in elementary school. A small smile appeared on her face as she thought about how her son had grown so well over the years. It was almost hard to believe that he was once small enough to be inside of her.

That was when she him come down the stairs. "Speak of the devil.." Katie said softly, turning around to see him. Her smile grew larger as she took in his from. "You look very handsome Derran." She said softly. Moving besides him, she placed a soft kiss on his cheek.

Stopping at the entry to the living room Derran stared at his mother, entranced by how the lavender fabric clung to her. This was definitely not a 'mom outfit' and was much nicer than the tramp-like way many of the girls his age would have dressed. Coughing he cleared his throat as he blushed feeling her lips on his cheek. "Thanks mom. You...you look amazing though" he said softly looking down into her eyes. Noticing how the dress matched her eyes he smiled wider realizing his mom was probably the most beautiful woman he knew.

"All the other guys there are going to be jealous of me you know, being there with such a beautiful woman. They probably wouldn't even guess you're my mom" he said with a laugh. Giving his mom a slight hug he could almost picture the looks on the faces of any other guy in the restaurant.

A large blush spread across her face as the compliments came one right after another. Totally unexpected. Laughing along with him, Katie shook her head. "Probably not." Not many Mother's took their sons to Sunset Lounge, nor was son's who took their mother's to it either. So this was certainly different, but she was loving it. It had been months since had felt his excited about going out. It didn't hurt that her date for the evening was unbelievably handsome.

"And all the women will wonder why an old woman like me is with a gorgeous young man." Winking at him, Katie grinned at him playfully. "You know I'm right." She knew that once they arrived, the rest of the women were going to be shooting her dirty look and whatnot, but it was going to be amusing as hell. "On that note, how about just for tonight you can call me 'Katie'. It is a date after all and I can't very well having you calling me 'Mom'."

Blushing to match his mother Derran felt an odd feeling in the pit of his stomach as his mother winked at him. He knew she was just teasing him but there was something about this happy, playful side of her that he liked. "Sure mo....Katie" he said with a shy grin at using her name. "Old woman? If they think that then they aren't looking at you then. I'm wondering if you're actually old enough to be my mom..maybe an older sister" he looking from her face to the clock.

"Well it's about time to go. Are you ready for our date Katie?" Turning he offered her his arm to escort her out to the car. Despite the way they were teasing each other he couldn't wait to walk in with her on his arm.

Another small blush spread across her cheeks as she heard him say her name. Okay, it was only her name. However, there way something about him saying it that she liked. Katie shoved those thoughts into the deepest darkest corner of her mind. There was no way that she could think about something that complicated at the moment. A small chuckled slipped from her lip at the whole 'older sister' thing. The woman never actually thought that she looked that young. Perhaps a few years younger, but not that young.

"Why yes I am Derran." Smiling sweetly, Katie gladly accepted his arm and linked hers with his. There were butterflies flying around in her stomach as they left the house. It was almost as if it was an actual date between two adults, and now just mother and son.

Feeling her link her arm with his he smiled and leaned down kissing her cheek as he saw her blush. It was such a cute and sweet sight he thought glad his mom was enjoying herself so far. Leading her down the walk to the driveway Derran opened the passenger door of the practical family sedan for his mother. Waiting until she was in he shut the door and walked around getting in the drivers seat. Putting his belt on he looked over and gave his mom a little smile before starting the car.

Pulling out of the driveway and starting to drive towards the restaurant he wondered why he couldn't find a girl that acted more like his mom was to date. Not that he was thinking of his mother in a romantic or sexual way, more how nearly all the girls he attracted seemed to be more forward and blatantly sexual.

Although Katie knew she shouldn't of been surprised when Derran opened the door for her, she still was. She slipped into the passengers side seat and buckled in. The last thing they needed was to be pulled over or get a ticket tonight. Or, well, any night for that mater. Her eyes watched him as he closed her door and got into the seat next to her. Happily she returned his smile with one of her own. The evening had only begun and she was already enjoying herself quite a bit.

As Derran wondered about the mysteries of women, Katie thought about her relationship with her husband. The small voice in the back of her head figured it should of been her husband next to her and not her son. Yet, she was happy it was her son and not him. She looked at the boy -no- man next to her and truly looked at him. In ways, he was no longer her baby boy. He was a grown man that was taking care of her at a point in her life where she needed someone.

As he drove and continued to wonder about the girls he dated Derran noticed his mother look at him. He couldn't help but wonder what she might be thinking looking at him like that. "You really are excited aren't you Katie?" he asked reaching out and giving her hand nearest him a squeeze. Doing so he couldn't help but think if his date wasn't his mother he'd have squeezed her knee instead at the very least.

It was nice that something so simple as taking her out made such a great change in her, he would have done this earlier if he'd know. This is what his father should have been doing, just paying a little attention and show that he cared. Even Derran at only eighteen could see that's basically what his mother wanted.

A soft chuckle came from her as she squeezed his hand in return. "I'm very excited Derran." Katie said honestly to him. It was hard to believe that just a few hours ago, she had been on the kitchen floor crying her eyes out. It was almost as if that whole thing was just a dream or something. Despite that, she knew that it wasn't.

Katie turned her head and looked at him, smiling softly. "Thank you for this. It means a lot to me." If he hadn't been driving, the woman probably would have hugged him or something. This was all she wanted: to feel loved. Her eyes then moved back to where they had been before, staring outside of the car. She still hadn't let go of his hand yet. She didn't want to. Reluctantly, she let his hand go since he was driving.

A soft sigh escaped his lips as his mom let go of his hand. Not sure why but the loss of that little contact with her saddened him a little. "You're welcome Katie. I just wanted to cheer you up and see you happy" It still felt odd using her name but Derran was enjoying doing so. It made him feel as if he was talking to his mother as a woman and another adult, not just to his mom.

Getting closer to their destination he began to look for a place to park in the busy area. Seeing an open lot he slowed pulling the car into it and finding a spot near the end with only a few other cars near them currently. Smiling as he turned to look at his mother he unbuckled his belt. "It's about a block walk Katie. Think you can make it there with your date and not run off with some stud?" Chuckling he teased her some more knowing they were both enjoying it this evening.

"And I assure you that your mission is accomplished." Katie said. The closer they got to the restaurant, the more excited she was getting. She wasn't even sure if she was so giddy because of where they were going, or who she was with at the moment. Yes, she had wanted to go to the Sunset Lounge for months, but being with Derran made her happy too. Perhaps she would have been pleased just staying home and watching old movies with him. She wasn't sure, but couldn't dwell on those thoughts as he started to look for a parking space.

Katie smiled back at him, unbuckling her own seat belt. "I'm not sure." She teased him, "You might have to make sure I don't." The teasing between them was so innocent and cute. She loved every second of it. This was the kind of thing that she use to do with her husband when they first starting going out in high school.

"Well good." he replied. Derran was pleased that his mother was happy, maybe they should start spending more time together if this was how it made her feel. He had to admit he was enjoying tonight as much as she seemed to be. With a grin he said nothing in reply just getting out of the car and moving quickly to get around and open her door. Looking down at her as he waited to get out he marveled at her beauty and the classy sexiness of her legs sticking out from the black lace of the trim on her dress hem. His father had to have something wrong if he'd rather go travel for business than be with this woman.

Closing the door and setting the alarm after she got out Derran took her hand lightly in his. "I'm not letting you get away. Tonight you're mine Katie" Not thinking of the different ways one could interpret his words he just smiled and began to walk with her towards the restaurant, her hand held in his.

Katie actually giggled when she saw that he was going to open the door. He acting very gentlemen like, and she loved it. Tonight she was seeing a side of her son that she had no idea existed. She wasn't going to complain about it though. This was the kind man that she wanted Derran to grow up and be. She knew that when he met a girl that he loved, she would be a very lucky woman. It wasn't every day that someone met a guy like him. If he wasn't her son, she would even consider a relationship.

She unbuckled the seat belt and slipped out of the car. "Good." Holding his hand tightly, she walked next to him. Katie held back a laugh as she realized how they looked. Perhaps other people would actually consider them a couple in all seriousness. And a small part of her liked that. As they got closer to the restaurant, her face lit up happily.

Feeling her hold his hand so tightly was both comforting and exciting. As the walked hand in hand to the restaurant it became harder to keep thinking of her as his mom at least for the night. Her laugh somehow brought an even bigger smile to his face especially as he saw her face when it lit up as they neared the restaurant. Any guy would be lucky to be in his shoes tonight and Derran knew that.

Opening the door to the restaurant he held it for her and watched her enter. As he did a part of him wondered if maybe he should look for an older woman to date and wished that Katie wasn't his mother.

Katie grinned at him as he held the door open for her. She actually felt like Cinderella - without all the talking animals and pumpkins of course. As soon as she took one step inside though, senses were filled with the Sunset Lounge. The smells were mouthwatering. Her hears were pleasantly filled with the laughter and commotions of the other customers. The inside of the restaurant was beautiful. Once she was in though, she squeezed his hand tightly out of excitement.

She almost looked like a little child on Christmas morning. It was a bit sad when a wife got so excited over a little attention and being taken out to eat. That was the last thing on her mind though. Beaming up at Derran, she almost dragged him to the counter so they could be seated. Katie made a mental note to find a way to pay him back for this.

Walking in Derran's eyes opened wide. He knew this place was nice but it was amazing in here. The sweet and savory smells filled the air but were not overwhelming. Feeling her once again grip his hand tightly he smiled and had no choice but to follow as she dragged him over. Giving the hostess his name she smiled saying the table was ready and led them back.

Weaving their way back through the dining room he noticed the other patrons briefly. There wasn't a woman there that he saw that could compare to his mother...Katie. When the got closer he spotted a nearly private table with only two chairs and a floral centerpiece that differed from the simple carnations and votive's on all the others.

Her eyes darted all around the room as she was lead to their table. She was just in awe. Katie peeked around the hostess and tried to see where exactly they were going to sit. Unfortunately, she couldn't. Then the hostess moved to the side and placed the menus on the most beautiful table there. "Oh my..." Her voice was full of shock. The floral centerpiece was gorgeous and was made of her favorite flowers. Her eyes went from the table, to the hostess, and then finally to Derran. She knew restaurants didn't do this for just anyone and he had to of paid extra for them to do this.

Her arms quickly wrapped around her son's waist and hugged him tightly. She squeezed him tightly before kissing his cheek out of appreciation. This was turning out to be so much more than she had ever imagined. "It's amazing." A blush spread across her cheeks as she saw the look the hostess was giving her. Pulling away from him, she went to the table and slipped into her seat.

The look on her face was priceless to Derran and he was glad to have paid the extra cost. He blushed slightly as she wrapped her arms tightly about his waist. "You're welcome Katie. You deserve the best after all" he said before taking his seat across from her. Everything was perfect so far, he couldn't imagine a date being better than this no matter who he was with. Thanking the hostess as she left he looked over at Katie loving the expression of surprise and joy on her face.

Looking at the menu he was slightly overwhelmed by the variety of dishes that they offered. He wasn't sure what he wanted and everything sounded so good in the descriptions. Before he knew it the waitress was there asking them what they wanted to drink. Looking up he hadn't even looked to see what they had yet. "Ummmm ice tea"

Katie's smile was the brightest it probably had ever been, well, since she had gotten with her husband. She looked down at the menu. There where more choices than she thought. "Hmm.." Her head snapped up when she heard the waitress. It seemed that she was in the same boat as Derran. Instead of panicking, she said, "I'll have the same." Looking back down at the menu, she flipped the page and looked at more of the choices. Way more than she thought.

She looked across the table and tucked her hair behind her ears. "So, do you have any idea what you are going to order?" Katie bit her bottom lip, looking through each item. Next her attention was caught by the waitress coming back with their drinks. "Thank you." She said softly as she picked up her glass and took a sip. Totally yummy.

"No not yet" Derran replied wondering what he'd like. "Thanks" he said as the waitress set the glasses down. When she asked if they were ready he shook his head. "Not yet, we need a few minutes" he said looking back to the menu as the waitress walked away to another table. Finally deciding to just pick something with chicken he skimmed through the rest of the menu.

Looking up he smiled across the table at his mother noticing how much younger she seemed when tucking her hair back like she was. "I think I'm going to have the chicken cordon bleu." he said thinking it sounded the best to him. "What about you?"

Katie looked up at her son as he made his choice. "Sounds yummy." She replied before looking back down at her menu. The choice still wasn't going to be easy, but after another moment of debating she was able to choose. "I'm probably going with the Eggplant Parmesan." Licking her lips, she took a sip of her drink. She set down the menu and leaned back in her chair slightly. "This place is amazing." The smile on her face grew larger. "Thank you so much."

It was impossible for Derran to not to smile when looking across the table at his mother. "That sounds good too" he said watching as she sipped her teas then licked her lips. "You're very welcome. I'm glad you like it Katie. I know how much you've wanted to come here" Picking up his glass he took a sip from it and grinned across at her. Seeing her so happy he didn't want the date to ever end.

Katie laughed softly at her son's comment about her choice. It wasn't that it was funny or anything, just that she felt the urge to laugh. She knew it was kind of flirting. For some reason though she couldn't help herself. It felt natural to do it. "You do realize that I'll have to make this up to you right?" Her eye brow raised slightly as she spoke. There was no way she could let him do something like this and not give him something in return.

She opened her mouth to say something else when she saw the waitress return to take their orders. "Hello again." Katie said sweetly to the girl, acting more like herself than an embarrassed girlfriend or something. "I'll take the Eggplant Parmesan please."

Hearing her laugh he grinned at her and blushed. So similar to her normal laugh but there was something exciting about it. When he heard her say she would have to make this up to him and saw her raise her eyebrow slightly Derran became a little confused. Was she flirting with him? He held his breath as she opened her mouth again but the waitress returned.

After Katie ordered the waitress looked at him "The chicken cordon bleu" he ordered and handed her the menu. As she walked away he looked across the table at this mother. "So....you said something about repaying me?" he asked wondering what she meant.

Katie handed the waitress the menu after he ordered, still smiling brightly. The look on her son's face when she brought up making this up to him. It seemed that he really hadn't expected to her say or even offer to do so. It was the least she could do for him after he went all out for their date tonight. The fact that she called the whole thing an actual date completely didn't even register in her mind. She was enjoying herself too much to really think that much into it. However, she did laugh softly when Derran brought the topic up again once the waitress left.

"Don't look so confused." She teased, looking back at him. "It's the least I can do for you." Although at this point she wasn't quite show how she was going to do that. A gift could work, but it wouldn't be to the same effect. "I have to repay you somehow for all of this. After all, it's only fair." Instantly, her mind started going over the possibilities. There really was only one true option. "It's going to be a surprise." Katie stuck her tongue out at him playfully, pretty much closing the book on that topic.
