Derran walked down the stairs and into the kitchen. Opening the fridge he rummaged around for something to eat. His last summer before heading off to college most of his friends were away on vacation, celebrating their high school graduation. Blowing a strand of his brown hair from his face he settled on pulling the leftover pizza box out. Sitting on the counter his long legs dangled, his feet hitting against the cabinet door as his father walked in.

"Another productive day I see son?" his father asked setting his suitcase on the floor. Another week another trip out of town. It seemed his father was away more and more as the months passed. Not that Derran cared much but he hated seeing his mother alone and bored so much. It just didn't seem right to him.

"Yup...gonna play some video games...read a little and watch a movie" he replied sarcastically, his green eyes sparkling in a grin as he took a bite of the pizza. "Another trip huh? Anywhere fun this time?" he asked wondering where his mom was as she usually hovered over his dad whenever he was leaving on one of his trips.

Katie was actually upstairs in her bedroom. There was a small frown on her face. She was a bit upset that her husband seemed to be leaving again. At first, she had thought nothing of it. Then as the trips increased, the more worried she became. Just the night before she had approached him and asked him about it. He brushed her worries off as paranoia.

Sighing softly, she forced a smile on her face as she left her room and headed down into the kitchen. "G'morning Derran." Then her eyes narrowed that the food that going into his mouth. "You do realize that pizza isn't actually a food group right?" Sometimes she wondered if her son thought so.

Then she turned to face her husband and kissed his cheek softly, noticing how he quickly pulled away from her touch. Hurt flickered in her eyes before she quickly pushed it away. The last thing she wanted for Derran to see it.

He blushed deeply hearing his mother's voice and finished the mouthful of pizza and set the rest of the slice down. "Ummm...good morning mom" he said softly embarrassed as his mother chided his choice for a late breakfast. He looked around for a piece of fruit to eat instead, hoping to at least ease her worries at his diet.

Seeing her turn her face quickly from her father after kissing his cheek he sighed under his breath and grabbed an apple. Heading out of the room he called over his shoulder. "Have a good trip dad, we'll miss you. I'm gonna watch a movie mom" he said walking out of the kitchen he felt angry at how his dad didn't seem to care how these trips upset the family. Biting into an apple as he went to the family room and scanned the dvd collection. Picking one based on Robin Hood he popped it into the player and stretched out on the couch as it began.

Katie tried to smile as he grabbed an apple. It seemed he took the hit after all; however, before she could even say anything else he ran out of the room. She stood there for a second and shook her head. "Don't leave the core laying around when you finish!" The woman called after him. It wasn't that she was being nagging, but once she had found a decaying core under his bed once. Not the most pleasant thing to find laying around.

Once Derran was gone, she turned to her husband and sighed softly. "How long are you going away for this time?" If she was lucky, Katie would actually get an answer. There had been a few times where he had left and returned without a simple heads-up. Her arms crossed as she looked at him. Sometimes she didn't even recognize that man that she married. He was pretty much a stranger to her. There use to be a loving look in his eyes when he looked at her, but now.. now it was almost if that love was gone.

Finishing the apple he set it on the end-table to throw away later as he remembered how mad his mother was the last time she found a piece of food he'd forgot to throw away. As the movie played Derran was unable to pay much attention to it. His thoughts were filled with worry for his mother, when his father left suddenly like this she seemed so depressed. It killed him to see her like that.

As he laid there he began to try and think of ways to cheer her up. His mind wandered through a handful of possibilities, all seemed rather boring to him such as getting her some flowers or other present. Something special was needed and he tried to think of anything she had mentioned recently. The movie was now forgotten as he starred up at the ceiling and was unaware what was going on between his parents in the kitchen,

Katie narrowed her eye brows in frustration as silence was the answer to her question. It seemed that things hadn't changed since she tried to speak to him the night before. "Damnit!" She swore, trying to keep her voice down. "Just tell me when you will be back. It isn't that complicated a question!" Tears started to form in the corner of her eyes, she hated what was happening between them.

Her eyes bore into his as he muttered, "Until I decide to return." Then he grabbed his briefcase and left the kitchen. Katie couldn't believe he said that. Sinking to her knees in pain and confusion, the tears that had formed started to roll down her cheeks. It was only a few moments later she heard the front door open then slam close.

For a few minutes she stayed like that, crying silently. Katie took a deep breath before she stood up slowly and wiped her face pf those pesky tears. Forcing a smile on her face, she looked into a mirror hanging on the wall and made sure that all evidence of her crying was pretty much nonexistent. Once that was done, she made her way to the family room, plopping on the couch next to Derran. "What movie did you choose?"

Still trying to think of something to do for his mother the slamming of the door shook Derran back to the present. Sitting up he swore softly, angry his father had seemingly turned into the opposite of the caring man he used to be. He could picture his mother crying but sat there knowing she'd probably feel embarrassed at her son seeing her like that.

After a few minutes his mother came in and sat next to him. "Robin Hood" he said looking at her trying to see if she had been crying but unable to really tell. "You alright mom?" he asked his voice full of concern and worry for her.

Katie smiled, "Good Choice." Out of the corner of her eye she could see the way he was looking at her. It seemed that she wasn't hiding the issues as well as she thought she was. A soft sigh escaped her lips as she heard his question. She shifted her body so she could face him. "I'll be fine Derran. Your father and I just had a small disagreement." That was sort of what happened. "I don't want you to worry about that, okay?"

The last thing she wanted was for her son to worry over this stuff. Reaching up she ruffled his hair like she use to and then snuggled against the couch. Hopefully he would let the topic drop. However, Katie knew that he could be stubborn when he wanted to.

Derran smiled as his mom faced him asking not to worry. "Well I do mom. I just want you to be happy" he said softly as she ruffled his hair like he was a little kid. He blushed lightly and playfully pushed at her hand. A sigh escaped his lips as he leaned back against the couch, happy that his mother could still be playful and fun even if it was an act to try and help him feel better.

Watching the movie silently for a bit he relaxed as he was enjoying himself. A smile crossed his face as Derran suddenly remembered a new restaurant his mom had told his father she wanted to go to a few weeks ago. "How about I take you out to dinner tonight mom?" he asked while continuing to watch the movie.

A real smile tugged at her lips. It seemed that no matter how old her son was, the old ruffling of the hair embarrassed him. Her mind continued to wander as the movie continued, barely paying attention to what was going on. It was one of the benefits of seeing the movie already. Katie thought about her husband mainly. Well, how she ended up at this point in her life to be exact. It was something that crossed her mind often to her dismay.

Her attention was then drawn to Derran as she heard him speak. Katie blinked in surprise at his offer. "Wha..?" Shaking her head, she turned to face him. "Dinner? Really?" This seemed so out of the blue. Her eyes lit up happily, "I would absolutely love that." Her voice was filled with excitement at the prospect.

Derran looked at his mother, noticing how distracted she seemed before finally answering him. Hearing the excitement in her voice and seeing her eyes light up he smiled. It had been a long time since he'd seen her look so genuinely happy. "Good. I'll make reservations...you don't worry about anything mom." he said with a pleased smile on his face.

Setting back he watched the rest of the movie not paying much attention as he thought of plans for tonight. Seeing her happy pleased him, she was a pretty woman and looked even more beautiful when she was happy compared to the way she'd looked lately.

An actual 'squee' type sound came from her as excitement filled her. It had been months since she had actually gone out to eat. Her beloved husband said it was a waste of money to go out. So they stopped. Then a grin spread across her face as she looked at him. "At least give me a hint as to what I should wear.."

It was only going to be with her son, but she loved him so much that she didn't care. Katie decided that it would be fun for the both of them. They would go out, have fun, and spend some quality time together. A win-win situation in this case.

He couldn't help but smile as he laughed. His mother had actually made a squee like an excited little girl. "You are too cute sometimes mom." Shaking his head in disbelief he looked at her. "Well, something nice. Dress like you were going on a date, not one of those 'mom' outfits" he said grinning at her. Seeing her so excited made him feel better and he liked the idea of spending a night out with his mom. It had been awhile since they really spent any time together.

A blush clearly stained her cheeks when Katie heard her son's laugh. There were moments where she would forget that she was a mother and a wife and actually was the free spirited woman she truly was. This was one of those moments. "A date huh?" A grin to match his appeared on her face as she started to plan what she would wear. It was hours away, but she couldn't help herself. "I'll see what I can do."

He had to bite his lip to keep from teasing his mother further as she blushed. However as she answered him with a grin of her own he tilted his head lightly confused by the tone in his mothers voice as she answered him. If he didn't know better he'd have thought it was kind of flirty. Shrugging it off he put it down to both of their excitement. "Awww I'm sure you'll look great mom. I'll make reservations in a little bit" he said giving her another smile before turning back to the movie.

Katie laughed at his compliment, grinning from ear to ear. This was a complete turn around from how she felt when she first came into the room. And she had no issues with that either. She did manage to sit on the couch for a few more minutes, but it seemed that she couldn't help herself. So she smoothly got up and kissed her son's forehead. "Let me know the plan after you make the reservations, Okay?" With that said, she left the room.

It wasn't until the door was closed behind her that she practically ran up the stairs to her bedroom. Katie shut the door behind her and bolted to her closet. She had a pretty good idea of what she wanted to wear, but there was a slim chance she didn't even own the dress anymore. So determined, she started to dig through the boxes laying the the floor of her walk-in closet.

Hearing her laugh Derran grinned loving the sound of it. Lately it was a sound that was missed around the house, the infectious chiming sound she made when laughing. "Sure mom" he said almost mumbling as she kissed his forehead. He could feel himself start to blush as she left the room leaving him to make the reservations.

A little while later he got up and turned the movie off having lost interest as he thought of plans for the night. Going back into the kitchen he pulled the phone book from the cabinet and looked up the restaurant's number. Placing the call he was able to get a table for two at six-thirty and with the promise of some extra money there'd be a small bouquet of her favorite flowers as a centerpiece. Now he only had to figure out what he was going to wear.

A large smile literally burst onto her face as Katie found the very thing she had been looking for. Half way through she almost gave up, but she was so pleased that she didn't after all. It would be worth it in the end. Her eyes sparkled with approval as she laid it on her bed. The dress was actually one that she hadn't worn for years. It was a soft lavender, the same color as her eyes. The sleeves went down a little past her elbow; however, they widened as it reached her elbow. The neckline was a v-neck with a black trim. The length of it though was the fun part. It ended quite a few inches above her knees. Yet again, there was black trim.

Running to her jewelery box, she pulled out black bracelets to match. Luckily, they had matching hoop earrings. Katie had a pair of black buckle heels. Sexy, yet not. It was only a 'date' with her son, but she wanted to pull out all the stops as he requested. Now that the fun part was done she had to everything that she didn't need back in the closet. Now that was going to be a pain. A soft chuckle came from her as she started to put back the mountains of old clothes back.

Making his way up to his room he heard what sounded like his mom tearing her room apart and giggling as if she was enjoying it. Pausing at her door he considered opening it but shook his head. Calling out he told her he made the reservation. "Hey mom, dinners six thirty at Sunset Lounge." Turning he walked down the hall to his room and shut his door before going to his closet.

Sliding the hangers over he pulled out a dark brown sport coat he got his last birthday and hung it from the top of the closet door. Derran then looked through his pants and grabbed a pair of dark olive slacks he had yet to wear. Finally he picked out a plain white dress shirt to wear with it. Stepping back he smiled as he looked at the clothes hanging off his closet door pleased with his selections.

"Okay!" Katie yelled as she stacked a box in the back of her closet. The two seconds later she actually processed what he said. Her eyes widened, her jaw dropped, and the box fell on her head. A small boom came from the closet as it hit her head then fell onto to the floor. Ignoring the pain the woman grinned brightly. Derran got reservations at the one place in town that she had been begging her husband to take her two for a very long time. It was suppose to be one of the best restaurants in town. Then she let out a "Ow" as she picked up the box and just moved it to the side. Who knew that a box full of women's shoes could be deadly?

Her eyes darted to the clock hanging by her bedroom door. There were a few hours until six thirty, so there was plenty of time for her to get ready. Katie yanked her towel off the back of her door and set it next to her clothes. "Shower time!" She said to herself as she stripped off her clothing and threw them into the hamper across the room. Next she wrapped the towel around her torso and made her way to the bathroom that was down the hall past her son's room. Once she was actually in the bathroom, she jumped into the shower quickly. So much to do and so little time.

Sitting on his bed he heard a soft thud that may have come from his mom's room. Wondering what exactly she was doing in there he laid back and sighed. It was hard to contain his happiness and excitement as he felt it grow with each passing moment. His mother's excitement at going out to dinner was infectious and he began to wonder...exactly how had dad ended up with her? Derran knew his dad had changed lately but he'd always seemed reserved, not the outgoing type this version of his mother would probably be attracted to. Who understood love anyway, with a shrug he tried to think instead of what she might wear tonight.

Laying there he eventually noticed a slightly sour smell coming off himself. He'd forgotten to shower this morning having slept a bit later than normal. Getting up he went to the dresser and grabbed a fresh pair of boxers before plucking his robe from off the back of the door and heading to the bathroom. Getting closer he heard the water already running as his mother was in there. 'Crap' he thought to himself not really having anything to do but wait now. Going back to his room he absentmindedly left the door open, knowing his mother was in the shower and stripped tossing his clothes into the corner near the hamper and slipping his robe on. Cinching it he again laid on his bed, legs hanging off as he waited his turn.

Katie was still beaming happily as she spent a good twenty minutes in the shower. Figuring that Derran would want one, she turned the water off and grabbed her towel. She dried herself off before wrapping it back around her form. Plus she made a mental note that she had to buy a new one at the store next week for herself. Leaving the bathroom, she made her way past her son's room and peeked at him as she did so. "You can go shower now." Her fingers held the tower together to cover her body from him. However, since the towel was wet, and unfortunately rather small, it did not cover much.

Afterward, she returned to her bedroom and closed the door behind her. It only took her a second to dry herself completely and throw the towel into the hamper also. Moving over to her dresser, Katie pulled out a black thong to wear that evening. Once she slipped the thing on and returned to her bed, she slipped the dress on. Her eyes darted to the mirror in the left hand corner of the room to inspect herself. It seemed to cling to her in all the right places like it use to. "No 'mom' outfit tonight."

Waiting for her to finish Derran almost began to doze off before hearing his mom tell him the shower was free. Lifting his head up he saw his mom briefly before she headed off to her room. He was glad she didn't stand there longer as she would have seen his eyes going slightly wide as he saw her small towel barely covering her as it clung revealingly to her form. "......o....o.k. mom" he stammered in response as she left. While he knew and thought of his mom as an attractive woman he never really noticed her body before as she usually wore more conservative clothes, at least since he cared to notice what she wore.

Getting up and hurrying into the bathroom he turned on the shower setting the temperature so the water was slightly cool. Uncomfortable thoughts went through his mind about his mom, what her body looked like....'NO' he thought to himself dropping his robe and getting under the cool water. As he washed himself he tried to suppress those thoughts, she was his mother after all. He just needed to relax and find a girl this weekend to relieve some of this pent up sexual energy that was rather excessive being a teenager and all.

Oblivious to what was going on in her son's mind, Katie continued to get ready. She sat down at her vanity and pulled her big box of make-up. She opened the box and dug through what was in there. "Ah ha!" Cheering happily, she pulled out the perfect make-up for the night. She looked into the mirror as she applied lavender mascara and black eye shadow. To her it seemed that females were putting entirely too much make-up now these days. So, she just applied a layer of light pink lipstick to finish it off. Now it was time for her hair. The woman plugged in her hair dryer then blew her hair dry. Instead of something uber fancy, she put it up in a low pony tail with a few strands out to frame her face. A grin spread across her face as she looked at herself in the mirror. It had been forever since she had looked this good.

Moving over to the bed, she slipped on her heels and did a little pin in front of the mirror. "Perfect.." She said softly. After that, Katie left her room quietly and went down the steps. She wasn't sure if Derran was out of the shower yet or not. So she figured she would just wait until he came down. It wasn't like she was going to leave without him.

Finishing in the shower he toweled mostly off before slipping his robe on and going back to his room. After drying off he hung his robe up again and tossed the towel with the rest of his dirty clothes to be watched. Not rushing to get dressed Derran knew he had some time as his mom had to dry and do her hair. He slid his green boxers on and had to rummage for some brown socks that would match his outfit. Finding them tucked into his dress shoes he shrugged as he put them on and then grabbed his slacks and pulled them on. It never ceased to amaze him where he found some of his stuff. He continued to dress and put on some Polo cologne before grabbing his sport coat and put it on. Remembering one final detail before going downstairs his put a little gel in his hand and rubbed it into his hair before styling it.

After checking his reflection in the mirror he smiled pleased at what he saw. Hoping his mom approved his previous thoughts were no longer on his mind as he bounded down the stairs noisily. "So what you think mom?" he said stepping off the stairs and looking to see where she might be waiting.
