I use to have awful sleep but now most nights I am able to sleep well.

How is your sleep schedule and do you get quality sleep each night? If you don't then why?

I try to... most nights I can sleep about 6 and a half hours. My body just internally wakes me up if I sleep too long, and sometimes I can be fully functional after only an hour or two of rest. Then I crash, hard.

Overstimulation of the mind, FOMO, overthinking, watching the time instead of enjoying what I am doing or focusing, all of these result in sleep loss, or trouble sleeping.

If I want to sleep really deeply and well, I take 5-10mg of melatonin an hour before bed.
I try my best to avoid looking at my phone around then too.
For me, this works quite well.

My sleeping schedule is all over the place and changes wildly even day-to-day basis. Sometimes I go to sleep really early, other times I stay up till the day and then wake-up when it's dark outside. Basically I just go to sleep when I feel tired, and wake-up when I feel rested, and that can change between 6 - 10 hours of sleep. If I have places to be and such I of course have more regular rhythm and take them account when deciding when to go to sleep (and usually failing at that and getting 3 - 5 hour of sleep and compensate the rest with my beloved caffeine), but since my calendar is blank from now to forseeable future I can roll with my gut-feeling.

However I do generally sleep quite well. I've managed to eliminate the biggest problems I've with sleep quality, but there are still things I could do better for sure.

I try to sleep 8 hours, but usually sleep 7. I tried different protocols, the current one that works is the following:
  • I stop drinking coffee at 12:00 (on most days. There are exceptions driven by type of activity)
  • And switch to green or mate tea until 3pm.
  • Mint or other naturally caffeine-free tea after 3.
  • I aim to go to sleep at 11:30. My screens go into that reddish mode 3 hours before that time.
  • I stop using screens 1 hour before sleep.
  • I take magnesium in the same 1 hour window.
  • I do try some other supplements for couple of weeks, but don't want to go into advertising any of them.
  • Warm shower.
When I travel, I also take melatonin and I take anti-histamines with me just in case, depending on the hotel / accommodation.

My sleep schedule is fucked 'cause I usually stay up until around 4 or 5 am (it's 4 am right now), but I still get enough sleep most of the time. I work evenings so I just sleep in during the day, usually I get like 9 hours of sleep or more, sometimes less but 9 is my sweet spot. I probably sleep more than I'm supposed to but I wake up feeling good so that's all that matters haha!
