Animal Crossing: Crippling Debt (KalTammy x Lord DreamCrusher)

"I would welcome your company Isabelle, I am ready to go now if you are?" Violet slipped out of her chair and stood, stretching for a moment before turning towards the door. "I have the perfect spot in mind for this!" Excitement quickly returning to the mayor now she was back on task. Outside of her exploitable naivete, she really did have a dedication that made her perfect for the job Tom had for her.

The next couple of months Violet fell into a comfortable rhythm, and found herself feeling a little silly for her initial outburst at Tom. A few days dedicated to fishing let her keep on top of her debts and work on money for other things. She even got comfortable enough to start working on her house, at least getting more furniture for it so it didn't feel like an empty box with a bed and a toilet. It still was a little spartan, but a wardrobe for clothes, a chair and table, it was slowly coming together.

The campsite was placed by the river on the opposite side of town from Violet's house, away from the current buildup and where visitors can enjoy themselves. At this point she was noticing that things might start feeling crowded so in the second month she would expend some funds and materials to have Nook construct a pair of bridges, one on each river that flanked the main town area. More room for future homes and other improvements, also saved her from needing to wade across when she wanted to harvest things from that side of the island.

Her improvements remained focused on the town square, again having to work off some money to get a fountain put in to be a centerpiece. That came after the garden that surrounded and went behind the town hall, really just a nice cultivated patch of flowers and grass with benches to relax in. But this all was costly and towards the end of the third month, Violet was feeling the pinch. Tom had raised her rates for this month, and though with the bonus nine thousand shouldn't be an issue, it still ate into her busy schedule. She needed an extra day of fishing to get her last couple of thousand, her plan as usual to pay a little, she had time left, another day.... only to wake up and find a monsoon hitting the island, drenching the land and blowing across it all. The structures were sturdy, so there was no worry about damage, but nobody was going outside.

So with a sigh, Violet had to whether the storm in her very boring home, and bite her lip in worry. The next morning she was due to meet with Tom and pay rent, and she was going to be a thousand or so bells short. "He'll understand... right?" She fretted to herself.

With time and improvements came new villagers. Drawn from a combination of word of mouth and some slight marketing on Tom Nook's part, Violet had managed to draw in three more people, making the total number of residents 5 and earning her her first bonus; shaving one thousand bells off of her monthly payments. That reduction was very noticeable at first, making her five thousand payment down to four thousand, but as she continued to chip away at her debt and reached the next milestone things started to slip a little bit as Tom raised her monthly price to ten thousand bells, nine thousand with her little reduction. That was still only about five days or so of hard work a month, a far cry from city life, but the increments were getting steadily more difficult all the same.

First was Reneigh, a friendly and fit horse girl who favored loose and colorful dresses and was very often taking selfies or streaming from her phone as a social media influencer. She and Cherry instantly hit it off and Beau, for as lazy as he was, remained fairly pleased and friendly with his new neighbor. The next resident to be drawn in was a bit of a departure from Violet's expertise, a deer named Diana who was rather uptight and haughty. Not quite to the same degree as Ankha, she actually moved in after all without a laundry list of requirements, but Diana seemed the type to constantly be judging others by somewhat unknown standards while also valuing knowledge and education. She... didn't so easily get along with the other villagers but was quite friendly with Longclaw and, oddly enough, Tom himself. Lastly was Julian, a bright blue unicorn that was incredibly flamboyant and an open flirt with just about everyone he came across. Julian was perhaps a bit sure of himself, a bit narcissistic, but there was an odd charm that his presence brought to the island as he was quite spontaneous with his energy; quick to break into song or dance and otherwise just as likely to make one smile as to shake their heads in annoyance. Didn't hurt that he had an androgynous attractiveness that most everyone seemed to agree upon.

Of course with more residents came more time spent socializing and managing concerns, let alone the budding friendships Violet was no doubt trying to build. While busy wasn't exactly the right word, the island was feeling much more healthy in terms of population. While there was plenty of space left to build and expand into, it also felt a lot less empty. Beau and Reneigh spent a lot of time outdoors, walking around and exploring for their own various reasons, while Julian's obsession with fashion meant he was hanging around the Able Sister's shop quite a bit... and otherwise generally near the town square. Diana kept to herself a bit more but wasn't a homebody either and would happily gossip with any interested parties she passed by, though most of the residents still tried to avoid her condescending nature. This all contributed to eating up some of Violet's time and, with the inclement weather, proved to cause her first mistake in what would eventually become a more common occurrence; regardless of how hard she tried.

Inside Tom's office she found herself delivering her payment to the fat tanuki sitting contently behind his desk, or at least her partial payment this time. The money-minded man didn't need much effort to realize the bag of bells was too light as he took it and a slight narrowing of his features told her of his knowledge; not that she was necessarily trying to hide the situation from him but certainly hadn't been able to explain just yet. "This doesn't feel like nine thousand bells, Violet." He said almost like a father preparing to scold his daughter. "I would hope you aren't trying to fool me after everything I've done for you, yes yes."

Violet froze, her mouth half open to inform Tom of the shortage when he instantly called her out on it. 'How can he tell that quickly?' Feeling like she'd been caught with her hand in the cookie jar, her mind raced for excuses. She could blame the monsoon, but no there were plenty of earlier days in the month. She could point out the improvements of the town, but perhaps she had been overreaching in getting all that done early. Maybe all the time she'd been spending with the villagers, from getting to know everyone, to answering the new resident's questions, to getting a little too into flirting with Julian a couple of times. But no, it felt wrong to put the blame on everyone else.

Wilting a little, the young mayor nodded. "Things didn't quite pan out right, there is only eight thousand bells there." Which had been what she was going to say before he spoke, but not so guilty and defensive. "I'll make it up for you next month of course! Just ended up falling a little behind this month." She attempted to summon back her more chipper attitude and hoped to win Tom over by force of positive attitude.

Tom's expression was nigh-unreadable as always but his disappointment in this case was at least clear as he peered at her with somewhat droopy and disinterested eyes. The truth inside his head was certainly a bit different as he was running through the situation in his mind to decide if it really was time to kick things up a notch. The island was coming along well, it had a small but decent number of residents now, and everything was in place. Ultimately, after a few long moments of consideration, he had made up his mind and felt confident in his decision. Everything was working out as he had imagined it.

"I'm sorry to hear that but I can't simply ignore a missed payment. If I were lenient with you compared to others, well, that wouldn't be professional." Not that anything about his long-term plan on this island was strictly professional in the first place. "Standard loan terms state that when a debtor fails to meet payment dates the lender can claim alternate payment of any kind at their discretion, yes yes." Still he didn't want to push her too hard when he still needed her to desire to continue improving the island. There was a balancing act her to try and not completely crush or break her will.

"Since this is your first time coming short I will be light but I can't simply choose not to take anything at all, it wouldn't be fair to the others." He made a show of considering things further, humming as he stroked his chin for a few moments, when in truth he already knew what he was going to demand; simply playing out this process would make it less sinister to her mind or so he hoped. "I think showing me your boobs will be enough, yes yes." Obviously he expected some pushback, potentially even another outburst, but it was all in her agreements, the paperwork she had long signed, that he could demand anything of those that missed a payment as compensation for his troubles; though such alternative methods wouldn't actually apply towards her debt or anything.

Violet winced a little, her smile faltering as Tom explained he had to be stern here. She had read something about a clause to extract payments by other means, through she hadn't given it much thought at the time. Her mind was quick to settle on the most obvious answer, what any regular debt collector would do in such a case if they were skipping past late fees; repossession. So Violet braced herself, ready for the hammer to drop and have to give up one of her recently purchased bits of furniture or some clothes to make up the difference. What actually came out of Nook's mouth utterly took her by surprise.

The girl blinked, silence stretching for a few moments as she replayed what he said. "My what?" She'd heard him, but it was so unexpected that she had to clarify. A blush would start to build, one part embarrassment, one part indignation, but she kept the outburst from bubbling up. "Uhm, that hardly seems appropriate Mr Nook... or legal?"

The tanuki was unfazed by her response and frankly had expected more of a reaction than what she currently gave. Though he wasn't foolish enough to think things couldn't still escalate. In any case he continued with a calm but authoritative tone, providing clarification while making it clear that this wasn't a joke or a jest. "I assure you that everything has been established through quite legal means, yes yes. I'm allowed to decide any means of alternative compensation so long as it does not result in serious injury or harm. I could repossess a furniture item you've recently acquired but you are already in debt to me for your home and it hardly seems appropriate for me to put you even further behind on bells when you have already missed a full payment. That only leaves one thing of any value I can imagine on your part. Your body, of course. Just a quick peek will suffice this time."

To a city girl like her, this still sounded awfully illegal, but she didn't speak up again immediately, still so shocked. Listening to the Tanuki he brought up a great point that repossession only made so much sense. Still this felt like borderline prostitution, sexual harassment at the least. She liked Tom, but she was not comfortable with this sudden turn, or seemingly sudden to the naive girls eyes. "You still can't do this, the pol-" she paused as it suddenly struck her. There was no law enforcement on this island, no HR department, nobody above Nook. She had no contact off the island without going through him or the Nooklings, and they'd take his side in anything.

The gears were clearly turning as she sat there, mouth agape trying to think of something substantial. Eventually she threw out the best argument she could. "So that's it? Sexual favors or I get evicted? The villagers aren't going to like those terms for a late payment..."

She was putting together his scheme much more quickly than he gave her credit for. She seemed a bit dull as far as he had been concerned before now but she was seeing through the situation he had arranged. Still, his trap was already set and she had already fallen in it. Ultimately it hardly mattered if he had to be more openly cruel so early on compared to saving it for later. It was a minor complication but not something that Tom felt would really influence the results all that much. "It's not so much a question of enjoyment but of necessity. Every lending agreement has the open-ended terms as yours does. Everyone here, everyone who will come here, will fall under the same restrictions."

He paused to let that sink in a bit while he otherwise remained quite calm and collected. In the face of Violet it was a tale of opposites, truly. He still needed her help, still needed her to keep some motivation, so when he continued it was to give her that shred of hope to cling to. "If everyone keeps on top of their payments then all will be normal. Such punishments will only be for those who fail to pay on time, like you have this month. And when your debts are repaid, you'll no longer have to worry about such things, yes yes."

Violet was truly torn, this method of punishment was just so wrong for her, yet he was right it was only for late payments. She had to measure it against that, had to consider it against the usual ways to compel payments and well, it could be worse couldn't it? She didn't like that line of thinking, but had to admit he was just asking for a peek at her breasts, it was hardly more, potentially a slap on the wrist. A dirty older Tenuki getting his kicks off like this? It could be worse.

The internal debate was clear on her face, so was the moment she decided to give in, shoulder slumping, some mild disgust passing her lips. But she slowly pulled her shirt up as she mummbled, "just this once." She wouldn't miss another payment, she was sure of that.

Her shirt peeled up easily, enough to expose the plain blue bra beneath. She wasn't wearing anything fancy, just something that'd be comfortable to work with and not get too sweaty. With her shirt held up just over her breasts she then messed with the cups until after a few moments she could pull them down and reveal what he had demanded. He'd have glimpsed these in the river, but up close her perky breasts looked all the nicer, pink nipples almost blending into her pale skin. At this point her breasts were significantly paler than her arms and face, her tan uneven right now as she hadn't taken to nude sunbathing.

Tom watched with veiled excitement even though his face otherwise remained stoic and disinterested. True that he'd seen her naked before, at least partially, peeping from the bushes didn't afford the greatest view of her body compared to something as blatant and open as this. It was just a look at her breasts of course and nothing quite so... stimulating but there was much more to come in the future. She would miss a payment again in the future and he would ramp up the requests he'd make of her, he would ensure that to be the case.

Her skin was milky and incredibly smooth, truly a delight to behold. Tom debated trying to snap a picture on his phone, perhaps the only mobile device on the island, but he resisted the urge this time and resolved just to enjoy the view. "The vigors of youth. So soft and perky. Truly a nice pair, yes yes." While his tone of speech didn't change there was surely a darker perception of it considering the nature of what was currently happening. The tan lines were a little distracting and would probably look better if she did ensure an even tan, though he was a bit conflicted with the fact that he found her paleness quite appealing in contrast to the feathers and fur most of the other islanders possessed.

He would continue to stare, to drink in the image of her flesh, for a few moments longer in relative silence which most likely would add to her discomfort. Still he knew not to push his luck too far and would speak up on his own accord rather than draw things out too far.
"That should be sufficient. Though next time you miss a payment you'll have to do more than this." He wouldn't specify exactly what that would entail as, in truth, he would play it by ear but all the same the threat was in place to motivate her. "Oh and you aren't to discuss the details of your debts to anyone that isn't a current resident. You'll find that written quite plainly in your contract. Wouldn't want to scare away new villagers. After all, you do want to increase your payment reduction don't you?"

Violet's cheeks heated at Tom's compliments, hearing him talk about her breasts like they were some ripe melons. She wanted to cover up, to pull her shirt down, but she held her ground and waited for him to say he was done. At that point she quickly tugged the shirt down, covering up. Her bra was still peeled down, but she worked to fix that under her shirt, having long practice of adjusting her underwear without fully exposing herself. "There won't be a next time," having not figured out yet that this downward spiral of debt was only going to get worse.

At the mention of warning new residents, she opened her mouth, then closed it again. She really was conflicted here, on one hand loving this island and wanting to grow it, but on the other not wanting to trap other women with a pervert like this. Ultimately, she sidestepped the decision right now and asked the more obvious question. "And telling the current villagers? Dianna doesn't seem the sort to take this easily." Picking the most troublesome of the lot off the top of her head.

It was a shame to watch her pull her shirt back down but he could be patient. Besides, it's not like he wasn't already getting some from other individuals in the meantime. At her question, clearly trying to push boundaries and looking for leverage, Tom merely shrugged. "It's none of my business what you discuss with other residents. Our contracts merely prevent the discussion of business with non-residents."

Violet really didn't understand the research he'd done on all the current residents and any potential future ones. While surely most of them would not be happy when they found out the problem with missing a payment, not all of them were so closed minded. Diana in particular he had quite the hunch that any initial indignation would quickly fade into interest. After all, she already held a favorable view of him at the moment and even the most haughty and judgemental of individuals had to find some measure of respect for clever planning. "You don't have to worry about how I will handle the others. You just have to keep working on improving the island and attracting more residents. While sticking to your debt payments of course, yes yes."

Tom's casualness regarding her threat made Violet hesitate. She wasn't the brightest person, but she could tell that he seemed utterly unconcerned with her talking with the other residents. Either he was bluffing and just trying to get in her head, or he really was not worried about a mass exodus of the island or legal trouble. Violet suspected he really wasn't bluffing and stifled her idea of banding together with other residents, at least right now. 'Isabelle would be better informed and connected, surely?' It was a delicate act, Violet wanted this island to be successful, just didn't want Nook exploiting everyone.

"Am I free to go Mr Nook?" Having little desire to be too friendly with him right now. "Have a lot of work to do making sure that clause never needs to get enacted again." On time payments yes, but perhaps she could figure something out?

"Of course." The tanuki replied matter-of-factly as if there shouldn't be any doubt. "Though I do hope you'll do a better job of meeting your payments in the future." The truth was anything but, however Tom was a businessman from his time in the big city and while it wasn't previously his preference to deceive that didn't mean he had lost the ability either. Maybe this was all a bit greedy and selfish but he'd put in the time and effort over the years; he was done being so generous with his clients.

Violet hesitated at that last comment, a slight narrowing of her eyes as she tried to read him. But Tom continued to be a bland mask to her, an even tone that gave away nothing, at least not to her. The girl pushed out of the seat and headed out of the office, trying to resist the urge to run. He'd flustered her sure, but she was trying her best not to let it get to her. She let the anger moderate the feeling of violation, telling herself that it wasn't that bad and she'd keep it from happening again.

To that in, she made her way to Isabelle's office, someone who had worked with Tom before, and handled most of the island's paperwork at this point. 'Did she know?' That thought and remembering odd comments of concern from the shih tzu as well as a day she'd stormed to Nook's office, well that made her think that Isabelle might have seen this coming.

Isabelle was behind the desk inside the town hall as usual. She didn't technically have a dedicated office, though it might as well be hers for how she spent almost all her time here. The town hall space behind the front desk was shared with the mayor, Violet already having spent some time going over documents and detailing plans for projects a few times now if not terribly often. The female canine perked up a little at the sight and gave a genuine smile. "Hello mayor! What can I do for you today? Starting a new project? Discussing the general zoning for future development? I think we probably have enough residents that island ordinances might be worth considering. I could tell you about that if you like."

Seeing the ever-cheerful Isabelle did put Violet at ease a little, the nagging worry that somehow all of Tom's friends were in on this scheme quieted down. It wasn't clear if Isabelle knew about this or not, but Violet felt sure the woman wasn't willingly helping enable it; though, only one way to really find out. She'd take a seat across the woman and let out a long breath as she gathered herself. She wasn't as agitated as when she left Tom, but was still unsettled. "I think I want to discuss contracts... The ones Mr. Nook had us all sign, especially the parts about when we fail to make a payment."

Isabelle almost immediately became a bit nervous and sad at the mention of such things but it didn't seem like she was going to try and shy away from the conversation as a whole even if it wasn't something she wanted to discuss. "I'm... not really supposed to talk about official contracts and such with others." She seemed uncertain, like she was fishing for more information on just exactly how much Violet actually knew, but did continue a little bit. "As an island official I'm not actually in any housing debt... my work contract is different, much like the Able sisters or Longclaw I'd suppose." Though it seemed like she wasn't exactly sure of the nature of those arrangements to be certain.

Violet paused suddenly and thought back to Nooks words, he had said non-island residents she couldn't talk to. Did that mean just potential visitors or were workers like Isabelle also counted? The human girl was realizing that she really ought to have gotten a copy of her contract to study closely. Still, the way Isabelle reacted made Violet think the woman knew what she was talking about, but probably had some sort of similar clause. 'What happens if we break it. He'd just deport us off island right?'

Realizing she'd need to be careful how she spoke here she bit her lip, then came up with something that should let them figure things out. "Well as a paying resident, I had an... interesting encounter with Mr. Nook after a short payment. Something that I am not allowed to discuss with non-residents but I am hoping I can discuss with you?"

Isabelle exhaled in a showing of relief, though not so much for the fact of what had happened but moreso what she spoke of next. "Then you are aware now of your... debt." She paused to shake her head a little and twisted her lips in a clear showing of sympathy. "I'm sorry, I'm not allowed to talk about any contract details like that unless the person brings them up to me first. It's... pretty clear Mr. Nook doesn't want information to spread too quickly about his dealings. I don't know what got into him, he was never like this before, but I'm still going to be here to help you out as best I can Mayor... whatever it takes." Those last couple words were a bit quieter though plenty audible.

Violet also felt a similar sort of relief to Isabelle, for one knowing she could talk to someone and secondly hearing that this was new behavior. "This feels like it's going to backfire on him. Surely somebody will take the risk of breaking the contract and let everyone on the outside know? Only reason I don't is I really want this island to succeed and hope he doesn't, well, push things too far."

"That's not going to be easy for anyone to do. The contracts, well they are legal and in order. If this got exposed he'd get backlash from public opinion but I doubt he'd have any legal ramifications." Isabelle thought for a few moments and drooped a little further over the desk, not happy about the reality of things but not one to lie even if she'd otherwise prefer to stay a positive person. "And getting contact to the outside world is kind of difficult. Most people come to the islands to disconnect and get away from the busy and hectic life of the city. The only person I know on the island right now that has a cell phone is Reneigh. But, still, that's assuming people will want to risk the repercussions of breaking contract. Being in debt is one thing, you can pay your bills under his rules and be fine, but the amount of bells you'd be risking of legal fees for breach of contract would be more than the cost of any home."

She let that sit for a few moments before eventually continuing, not that she ultimately had much more to add. "I should have checked my contract before coming to the island. I didn't think about it because I was too excited. Helping new islands grow and get established has always been my favorite thing and I'm not going to let anything ruin that. I just want to help you make this island the best it can be, mayor. I can handle some discomfort along the way."
