Sophie hated this time of day. It was time for her wand training class...and she was horrible. She didn’t understand why she always failed at the simplest spells...especially when she came from a family of all talented wand users. The small red fox decided to give another simple spell a shot, just one last time. She took a deep breath and waved her wand in a standard motion, and she recited the words for an easy summoning spell.

Suddenly, there was a loud bang, and her formerly fluffy tail was black and thin. Suddenly, she took off, dropping her wand on the floor. There was nothing she could do to improve her abilities in that class to save her life. Once she was in the middle of the quad, she curled up under a tree, sobbing hard. Her tail looked horrible, and her long auburn hair was tied up in a now frayed braid. Her tail was in her lap, and she couldn’t think of moving it at all. It was bad enough she was already on the extremely low end of the popularity scale...and this happens to her. "Why does this always happen to me?" She sighed and straightened her shirt and brushed her pants off, not planning on moving from the tree that she was sitting under. Besides, she didn't want to hear the laughter from the others in the class.

Caleb had been in the class room when that same girl made a mess of a spell. The class was laughing as she ran out trying to hide what was left of her once beautiful tail. Most the guys didnâ??t even notice her because she was one of the few foxes in the school and she was also just no good at magic. However Caleb had been watching her for awhile now trying to make up his mind about something and this latest incident had clinched it.

The young deep black wolf walked out of class the teacher has been trying to bring order back for quite some time now and it just wasnâ??t working. It was easy to see that there was going to be no more teaching in that class today. Pulling out his dragon talon wand and with a soft flick and not even a word just a mere thought sent a small seeking spark after her. Following quickly down the trail of sparks left behind the seeker he soon came out into the quad seeing her curled up under a tree looking very sullen. Walking over to her, he knelt down in front of her and smiled. â??Hiâ?¦â?

There was no way she wanted to see anyone, and just seeing another soul come out of the hall onto the quad almost made her sick. She buried her face in her hands and cried. Of course, she knew that voice. Who didn't? The most popular guy in the school who was the only one who could use two different wands at the same time. A handsome black wolf who was something else. He was perfect in every way, even at the polar opposite on the social ladder. She sighed softly and pulled her knees up tighter to her chest. "Go away...you're just here to laugh at me like everyone else..." she sniffed. Her tail drooped, and she continued to cry at the thought.

He sighed and sat down next to her leaning back against the tree. He had to admit that if things had been reversed he would have reacted the same way. â??No Iâ??m notâ?¦â? he left it hang there for a bit sighing as he quickly looked around for anyone else in the quad. There wasnâ??t anyone and so he felt a bit braver. Clearing his throat, â??No Iâ??m not here to laugh at youâ?¦Iâ??m here to offer you a deal.â? Pulling out his raven wand he moved back to kneeling beside her and reached out gently brushing her tail with his hand. For a moment he felt a gentle spark of magical energy pass between them. His deep blue eyes looked up into hers as he asked. â??May I?â? he motioned with his wand to her tail so she knew what he meant.

She looked up, not hearing any laughter in his voice. She wiped her face and looked at him, sniffing slightly. "A-a deal? What do you mean?" She leaned back against the tree and sighed. "No one ever wants to help me anyway...They all just laugh every time I'm in that class. I can't do anything right...not like you." As soon as he touched her tail, she jumped, feeling the same magical spark run through her. She looked at him wide eyed and blinked. "I...um...sure...I guess..." She didn't want to admit that he had intrigued her...especially after he had lightly touched her tail.

He smiled gently waving his wand over her tail and mumbling a soft spell. It didnâ??t take more the a moment but her tail was suddenly restored to normal. â??There much better.â? He smiled leaning back ot sit down in front of her and he sighed softly. â??I was thinking we could help eachother. Seeing as I have a natural talent in wand workingâ?¦and you have one in Alchemy.â? He trailed off not having mentioned why he needed her help in alchemy just bring up that she was good at it. He smiled, â??After all you are the top in the school at alchemy better then even most of the teachers.â? He had over heard some of the teachers talking about her innate skill with potions and it was then he decided he needed her help.

She smiled and nodded, blushing slightly under her red and white fur. "Thank you...Caleb..." Of course, she listened to his proposal, willing to do just about anything to improve her casting ability. "I...um...sure...I think we could do that..." Her tail wagged a little, and she quickly put her hand on it to stop it. "I would love to learn...as well as help you in Alchemy." Her blush grew a little darker when he praised her for how good she was in Alchemy. "But really, I don't think I'm quite that good." She wanted to know why Mr. Perfect needed help...but she wasn't going to complain if she had the chance to learn to use her wand a little better.

He smiled at her gently taking her hand and gently kissed the back of it feeling a soft tingle passing into his lips. â??Thank you,â? he collapsed back a bit looking like he had just had a huge heavy load lifted from him. â??You have no idea how much this means to me...â? he blushed red enough for it to show through his fur. Looking back up at her he decided that she was trustworthy and who would believe her anyway if she decided to tell. â??You obviously know who I amâ?¦do you know my family name? Deâ??jer?â? it was a famous name just as much as her families was known for its wand skill his was well known for its potions. â??Imagine being the one member of your family that canâ??t do the one thing that your entire family is good atâ?¦thatâ??s me I canâ??t even make a potion to clear warts much less anything more complicated.â? He smiled at her chuckling a little, â??I thought of all the people in this schoolâ?¦you might understand how that feels.â?

She sighed and nodded, shivering slightly as she felt him kiss the back of her hand. She wasn’t sure why she felt that tingle through her body. It was strange...but not completely unwelcome. She sighed and smiled slightly. “Yeah...well, I should be thanking you for your willingness to help me with my wand skills...” When he gave her his family name, she nodded. Of course she knew of his family. All De’jers were extremely talented in alchemy...except him. It was just like her family, G’ladheon. “Yeah...I understand...All other G’ladheons can use wands for the most complex spells, when I can’t cast a simple summoning spell.” She sighed and pulled her knees up to her chest, resting her chin on them. “They all compare me to my family...including those in my family. I just can’t measure up.”

He smiled moving over next to her his arm gently brushing against hers as she talked. He knew she was from a high wand magic family but he had no idea that it was Gâ??ladheon, they were famous and half his idols were from that family. She looked like she was about to cry and so without thinking he did something that with anyone else would have felt weird but with her there was something that just felt right as he slipped his arms around her shoulders. Gently stroking her hair, â??Please donâ??t look so downâ?¦I promise when we are done you will be so good with a wand that they wonâ??t know you ever couldnâ??tâ?¦huh sound good?â? he smirked down at her winking boldly at her.

Sophie blushed, and she smiled finding that his touch seemed to complete her a little. She didn’t want him to stop touching her...ever. She sighed softly and thought for a minute, slowly leaning toward the wolf, resting her head on his shoulder. For some reason, she had liked him since she saw him. But she had never thought she would be so comfortable staying close to him like this. “You promise? Well, then I’ll have to take you up on it.” She smiled a little more. “How do you think we ended up with the short end of the stick in both of our families? That’s always been something that has been bothering me.”

Caleb smiled nodding gently nuzzling against her hair without even thinking. â??I promise, and Iâ??m glad.â? He shrugged as she asked about them getting short changed in their families line of magic. â??I guess all that greatness has to balance out somehowâ?¦beside I donâ??t think about it too much. I just try to focus on the part I am good at. Fortunately with wand magic its easier I can only imagine how hard it must be for you.â?

“I think it would be easier to be able to use a wand...since you could physically show what you have going for you. When you come from a family like mine and only can, though I enjoy it, use alchemy, it is a little difficult cause there’s nothing to show for it on the outside...except in class.” Sophie slowly pulled back, even though she had been enjoying the way he touched her. It was getting close to time for class to be ending, and she didn’t think it would be best to be seen sitting so close to him...especially by his admirers. “Umm...Caleb...I think I dropped my wand in the classroom...I don’t think I could bear going back in there...”

He smiled nodding knowing how it must feel. As she pulled away from him there was a sense of loss that he just couldnâ??t understand. He nodded at her request to go get her wand. â??I would be glad to.â? He stood and started toward the class room stopping just a few steps away. â??You know I donâ??t have anything to do now that the transformation class is out all my other classes are on other daysâ?¦are you free to try some of the Alchemy today?â? he turned back waving over his shoulder, â??Think about it Iâ??ll be back.â?

Sophia sat in the same place as people started coming out of their classes. She was so glad that they hadn’t seen her sitting with him, with him sitting so close to her. Her eyes followed him into the building, and she smiled slightly. She didn’t know what she liked the idea of working with him on alchemy...as long as she had the chance for him to teach her how to use her wand. She waited for him to come back, especially since she knew he would be carrying her wand.

Caleb hurried back into the class room which was still a mess the teacher finally letting everyone out just to calm things down. Caleb moved quickly over t the center of the floor seeing the discarded wand laying there. As he picked it up he felt nearly the same tingle that he did whenever he touched Sophia, but the wand was almost a tingle of recognition.

Shrugging it off quickly before the teacher saw him he rushed out with the rest of the class; before the teacher could ask him to spar with him a bit. Rushing back down the hall he came out into the quad with a few others and hurried over to Sophia by the tree holding her wand out to her. â??Here you areâ?¦now shall we head for the library and pick up some books so you can show me what Iâ??m doing wrong in alchemy?â?

She smiled hopefully as she watched him come back out with her wand in hand. She stood and brushed herself off again. She had hoped that he wouldn’t be taken captive by the teacher of their class. She gripped her tail, not wanting to let it wag for fear of people seeing her excitement. She took her wand from him and nodded. “Umm...yeah...sounds good to me.” She didn’t want to give up the chance to spend every minute with the wolf. She followed him to the library, picking out some of the alchemy books. “I have a few more books in my dorm for use if and when you’re up to it.” Of course, she picked out a few of the easier books for him to start out with.

He helped her carry the book recognizing them as some of the easiest books on alchemy. He knew what she was thinking and that he couldnâ??t be as bad as she was, but she would see. He helped her check out the books and they headed out of the library. â??Letâ??s head to my houses common room and Iâ??ll bring down my alchemy equipment and we can try one of these out so you can see my level of ability.â? He smirked knowing that she would be shocked at how low his ability with alchemy was.

She smiled and nodded, following him from place to place. She looked him over from behind, ignoring the stares they were getting as they walked to his house's common room. Of course it looked odd that the smartest, yet low on the scale, fox would be walking with the ever so popular Caleb. She had put her wand in her pocket to keep from accidentally setting something on fire, knowing it would be bad for everyone that saw them. Of course, she had seen some people with low abilities of alchemy, but she didn't think that he could be any worse than them.

Caleb helped her into the common room the saying he would be right back he went to go get his basic alchemy kit. It was the same as any other students nothing to fancy just a basic caldron and a few of the basic and less dangerous herbs. He laid it out just perfectly the same way he had been taught to since he was young. â??Now then what shall we do?â? he started thumbing through some of the books finding the easiest potions just to prove his point as to how bad his was. â??What potion would you suggest for a five year old trying alchemy for the first time?â?

Sophie smiled and tapped her lips slowly. "Well, I haven't really had to think about that for some time. You really can't be that bad, can you Caleb?" She glanced at the ingredients and bit her lip. "Hmm...I don't know..." Her tail wagged slightly, and she glanced at him. "How about a rose scented aroma? Small fire, no smoke, only a light smell that will fill the room." She smiled sweetly and made sure the cauldron was empty, with no residue at all. "You should be okay to go."

He smiled knowing what she was thinking that this should be beyond simple for him and why was he asking her to suggest something so simple. He smiled his own tail wagging also as he gathered the ingredients. After measuring out the correct amounts he started to add them in the right sequence and at the right times. She would never have seen someone so perfect at the technique of alchemy everything was just perfect. It was very anti-climatic when he added the last ingredient at the prescribed time and there was just a puff of black smoke and then the caldron started to shake violently. Caleb was up in a second and pulling both wands said, â??Etiam Iuncturaâ?. The caldron settled and everything stilled and he sighed sitting back on the couch his head in his hand looking very much like she had when her wand misfired this morning.

She kept a close eye on everything he was doing, making sure he measured everything correctly. He certainly had the finesse of a born alchemist. She didn't think that he would fail quite as badly as he thought. But she never failed to overestimate someone. She frowned and bit her lip, jumping back when the cauldron spewed black smoke instead of the sweet scent she had hoped he would create and started rattling violently. She glanced at him and looked at him, and he looked just as bad as she did. "Oi...what happened? You did everything perfectly...but it still went rather wrong..."

He sighed looking up at her tears nearly washing down his face. â??I knowâ?¦itâ??s the same with you, I have never seen anyone with the precision that you control your wand and your spells are perfectâ?¦but they donâ??t come out right.â? He sighed leaning back in the chair his ears flattened back on his head after the failure. â??Its like alchemy for me is lost and not workingâ?¦and wands for you.â? There was enough room on the chair for both of them seeing it was almost a love seat. Caleb scooted over to one side and patted to spot next to him, â??Maybe Iâ??m missing somethingâ?¦show me how you would do it.â?

Sophie sat down and smiled sweetly at him. She didn't want to see him upset, and she reached up to rub his ear slightly. She couldn't help herself, and when she felt that tingle in her body that was starting to become so much more accustomed to. She reached behind her and tugged the hair tie out of her hair, letting her braid unravel on its own. "Well, I don't know...Come on, let's give it another shot..." She stood up and held her hand out to the larger wolf, helping him up. She stood by the table and smiled sweetly. "Measure them out again..."
