Aileen spent a lot of her time in the library studying. It was a constant struggle for her to try and decipher a lot of the words, but if Ludwig could do it for her, then she could do it for him. Every day he would pull her from the library, and every day she would tell him a new word or phrase she had learned. Her pronunciation was still very poor, but she was improving.
One day, when he went to retrieve her from the library, he stopped outside the cracked door to admire her. How was he, such a vile and disgusting worm, so blessed to have a woman like her as his wife? He didn't believe that God really cared enough to have such a beacon in his life, but it was never too late for most things. He felt the familiar urge to love her with such raw and unyielding passion blossom in his gut, and he did his very best not to disturb her peace. She looked so happy. His eyes moved, however, when he heard giggling not far from Aileen. There three servant girls doing their daily chore of keeping the library clean, talking amongst themselves in German.
"To think, our poor kind lord could fall for such a trap!" One said.
"There's no way he would fall for such a terrible trade! All that gold for one woman? He must be bewitched." Said the second.
"She had to have put a spell on him. Just look at her. That red hair? She's undoubtedly Satan's whore." Said the last. He noticed Aileen slouch immediately, her shoulders sagging softly as a frown pulled at her face; she didn't need to know german to know what 'huren' meant. She tried to ignore them as she read, and a new feeling engulfed him.
"You would do anything for me, right...?"
