Anyone Else Ever Put Off From an RP by of an Avatar?

So I’m admittedly a mega picky bitch, but does this happen to anyone else? Someone nice, obviously creative, and better still, showing some creative initiative, reaches out in response to a request thread...and something about their avatar just makes you go “Nope” for no legitimate reason? There’s nothing wrong with the avatar, just something about it, maybe the way the mind jumps to fill in what it thinks it’s seeing when it’s an itty bitty thumbnail on your phone screen or it’s not a gender your attracted to but so obvious you can’t ignore it...

Anyone?

I tend to be a bit distracted by animated avatars. I can't say i'm usually 'put off' by avatars, but if i'm RP'ing with someone I usually have to manually block their animated avatar when writing posts.

Other than that, not particularly. I suppose 'Selfie' style images can be a bit of a mental block producer as well. I don't generally have any interest in seeing the 'real' face behind the character. Beyond that, anime avatars, Avatars of real people. abstract avatars, as long as its not moving, i'm kosher with it.

If someone doesn't have an avatar, I mentally peg them (rightly or wrongly) as a bit lazy/uncommitted, but otherwise I'm only put off by really garish flashing animated avatars which give me a headache.

I never look at an avatar/profile picture when replying to a RT. Titles can attract me or not.

But knowing that there's at least one person who can be repulsed by them, I wonder how my avatar is being seen as?

Personally your avatar is fine. I prefer an avatar over no avatar, but at least having one shows you're making an effort to have something of an identity on the site to me!

I would say yes. Pics that imply gore and violence scare me. I remember not replying one of my PMs because of that. You’d think those wouldn’t be allowed, but I saw a couple of disturbing avatars.

I also feel biased when I get a message from a member without an avatar pic. But not to the point that it puts me off.

Hmm, moreover, I dislike generic catgirl catboy cartoons, as in hybrid characters. There’s nothing wrong with them. I just dislike them. Same with long animated images.

If you do feel an avatar is skirting the line or inappropriate, don't be afraid to report it!

It's okay, I know my avatars definitely put me in the penatly box with people, too.
Ah well, can't and shouldn't catch them all.

If there's one level that does negatively predispose for me, it's heavily animated, distracting gifs. Yeah, I tend not to play with folks using them, but it usually accompanies archtypes that make me not approach them in the first place, so it's really just icing on the cake for my already stringent and slightly whimsical elimination system of my own.

Yep quite often. The person chooses an avatar for a reason. So given I am not into Anime if they have chosen an Anime etc character than I know our chances of having much in common will be slim. I have seen some people with really poorly drawn cartoon characters as well, that screams that they most likely won't be very literate types and would probably be more about short posts and very simple plots.

Avatar's like @LizH on the other hand appeal as they are erotic and suggestive as opposed to being straight up porn.

@Tanakalian since you asked, I like your avatar. It's cool and has a sense of mystery to it. As with Liz H's it also puts my creative mind into work although in a different way to Liz's lol.

this entire thread is interesting because i never really thought that other people would put some emphasis on avatars. personally, i don't think i care that much? it's kind of a minor thing for me. though i can understand people making snap decisions based on your avatar. it probably would be distracting seeing a kiwi speak to you.

(though if anything i'm probably judged by my lowercase than anything else)

It's the same for me; anime and blank profiles give me an idea I most likely won't click with this person. Especially if it's the anime one.

While I have rped with someone who used one, anime avatars tend to put me off. It's not my cup of tea. Also animated signatures really are distracting. At least with those, I can scroll up and block them from view.

Sort of. I prefer not to roleplay with any real-life images of people, but for some reason realistic art is fine. I don't know why, maybe it's just a pet peeve.

I can definitely be put off by misleading avatars, for instance if like the person has an a avatar that doesn’t match their preferred gender role, like men who play as Doms with women for avatars, or vise versa. On the other hand, I really like when someone had an avatar that represents the kinds of characters or scenarios they like to play—Also Like judging a book, avatars signify to me how I might vibe with a potential partner. If they have like a smutty or sexy enticing avatar, Im more likely to feel we match.

Hmmm, what I'm getting here is that I should probably find a still avatar instead of the current animation. I'll probably just rip the last frame and call it a day.

My sentiments echo a lot of the common ones. I dislike flashy animation, obvious selfies/pictures of the writer, or anything too blatantly pornographic. Lack of an av and a new account and a low post count is also a warning flag (but the three tend to go together). Otherwise, I'm pretty indifferent.

It really all depends, because I don’t mind you avatar at all, in fact I like abomination ones. I am on the other spectrum with pornographic or NSFW avatars, I tend to like them more than SWF ones 🤷🏽‍♂️ but Im a whole live pervert fa real fa real Lol

It should be noted outright pornographic or NWS avatars are not allowed on BMR before anyone gets any ideas, haha.

Yes, I am aware. as is the case on other sites Ive been a member of—Just saying I prefer the suggestion of depravity, lewdness, or taboo over more the more tame avatars. Lol

I recently saw an avatar that had nothing wrong with it but because of the media it was from (a series I love by the way) I thought to myself "I'll never roleplay with that person" based only on that. I know that's pretty silly and I can't explain why it put me off but it is what it is. Mostly I don't like selfie style avatars since I'm not interested in who I'm writing with and I prefer going with the anime style myself.

I wouldn't say I'm put off by the avatar but it definitely makes me prioritise certain roles over others. I'm not a fan of anime so it would make it very difficult to find a roleplay partner if I completely avoided anime avatars.
