Okay so this is probably a really bad idea, but dammit, I just can't help myself. I would like to preface what follows with a declaration that I am really bad at sticking with these kinds of group RPs long-term, and that's if no one drops before my muse deserts me. That being the case, I'd ask that you come to this with at attitude that it's the journey that counts, not the destination, and not get involved if you know you'll be crushed if this doesn't reach a conclusion (though let's be honest, these things almost always die early on anyway, no one's surprised).

...

Still here? Okay, cool. I'm thinking about trying to GM a Fire Emblem game using the Fate Core RPG system. Right now, this is purely an interest check, so I won't proceed with the full lore dump and chargen rules yet. What I will say is that it would take place in my own homebrew Fire Emblem setting, unconnected to any of the other games; you wouldn't have to be familiar with the plot of any particular entry as a result, but a general feel for the aesthetics and themes of the series will be appreciated, to create characters who will fit. As for the premise, you'd play as knights in the service of your realm's queen, though your characters might have been of any background or station before being granted this position. You'd be fairly powerful and renowned individuals, deeply enmeshed in the politics and society of the setting, not rootless adventurers. Play would feature a mix of politicking, personal missions in service to your sovereign, and the obligatory Fire Emblem mass battles, in which you'd each command your own troops that you'd create as part of your own character. And, of course, the equally obligatory goofy social game, in which sex scenes would be allowed, since this is Blue Moon (though the setting wouldn't be porny in any way Fire Emblem isn't usually).

Sound interesting? If so, let me know, and tell me what class or type of character from the games you'd most like to emulate if this gets played.

God I loved Joshua. +1 in my book for actually knowing Sacred Stones. Probably my favorite FE game out of them all honestly.

Sounds suitable to me and Xedel would probably get along with them despite the public opinion. Then again Xedel gets along with most people, it's usually them that don't like him :)

That's good that Xedal would still try and be her friend. I don't plan on playing her as the depressive anti-social type. But then again, I'm still working all the kinks out of her personality to make it something... "consistent"?

I've played the shit outta Sacred Stones lol. I think my favorite, storywise anyway, is probably Path of Radiance for Gamecube. Something about the Laguz storylines and their trials/tribulations really resonated with me lol.

I did play path of radiance but never beat it. The storyline was good from what I remember but I think the difficulty spikes drove me off from completing it. It has been a long time and I never owned the game so I could be misremembering some details.

I think I finally got her personality nailed. Gonna spruce up her history a bit, then post her up and hope you guys can help me figure this system out. Never done Fate before and only really started experimenting with game systems this year. I'm struggling lol

Sorry for the quiet, folks! Let me know if I miss anyone who's waiting on an answer about something.

Motoharu:
So, I get that you're going for a mostly support-focused character, which is appropriate to the Troubador class as used in the video games. However--and this is partly about her skills, as DC pointed out, but also just about how you've described her in general--I'm not really sure she fits in with a group of knights, who are, keep in mind, professional warriors, and expected to be able to serve in that capacity first and foremost. While a Keeper and skilled Freyamage would definitely be appealing to Imogen and any other ruler to have around, they would most likely be kept close to hand at that leader's residence, not sent into battle with their military forces, unless they also had some capacity to contribute offensively on the battlefield. If they were to be sent on campaign, they would probably be kept out of combat if at all possible. Given what I want the focus of this game to be, I think such a completely support-focused character probably wouldn't be a great fit, as they'd likely miss out on a lot of the important action. You're welcome to rework Adelaide to be more suited to knighthood, of course; that will probably involve slightly more combat-focused skills, as well as a temperament just a little more suited to fighting.

Also, just a small detail: the location you used for her encounter with Gerard in her knighthood aspect, St. Mary's Cathedral, might not be the best fit. Tealon doesn't really have a close analogue to Christianity, or a Church; the closest would be the Keepers, but they're mostly a secular organization. Religion, in general, is mostly regional and more folkloric, a lot of local rituals, superstitions, small gods and heroes, tracing back to the myriad beliefs brought by the early human settlers from across the sea, not so much a widespread institution. Though I guess there could still be centers of worship called cathedrals in some places, and a concept of sainthood, so if you're attached to the name, that's fine. Just a bit more background flavor to keep in mind.

Zephysempai:
Welcome! Out of curiosity, have you taken much of a look at the setting yet? The background you've suggested could fit in well enough, but I wondered since you'd avoided any mention of specific setting elements in your description. Anyway, the only little issue I have is, while I know it's standard Fire Emblem practice to have samurai-flavored characters in there among the western European knights and whatnot without much thought given to it, I'd maybe have a little trouble suspending my disbelief if you wanted that to be more than just a look for her clothes and equipment. Generally, the cultural flavor I have in mind for Cydonia and Ralis is vaguely English and French, with Marcoth being German and Scandinavian, and Telna being Spanish and Italian. If you care about your character having more of a Japanese flavor beyond just wearing silk and using a katana, we could have her be from somewhere beyond Tealon, where this "good kingdom" and "bad kingdom" in her background are located; perhaps after all that went down, she traveled west to escape being seen as a traitor and a coward, finding her way to Cydonia and earning a place in Imogen's service. Otherwise, the history between Cydonia and Ralis would be a fine stage for that kind of backstory. I'll have a look at her full writeup when it's ready, and we can work from there!

@Liminal, thanks for the response. I would love to work some details out with you and hope you don't mind I shoot you a PM to hash out such details ^_^

Ok, I’ll save Adelaide for another campaign. You clearly have a different vision for the Paladins than the typical FE party of a ragtag bunch of misfits that can fill every roll. If inspiration hits me, I might comeback with a different character. Pegasus knights are my second favorite class, and the player that had one planned seemed to drop out. I might submit one in the next week, but I’m not going to force it if I’m not feeling it.

Heh, I know that feeling. Let us know if you'd like a hand with it, happy to help out with mechanics or whatever.

Fair enough!

Well, the good news is that Fate is a lot lighter than something like D&D as far as character creation goes. You can get pretty far just by focusing on the roleplaying aspects of it. Liminal posted a really good explanation of the steps here, but there is a lot of information there, so we can break it down step by step if that's helpful?

To get started, all you need to do is answer four questions about your character:

1. What is your core idea for the character? What is it that makes them cool or unique? (I think you mentioned wanting to be an assassin of some kind?)
2. What is their biggest character flaw, or what causes trouble for them in their life?
3. Who were they before they became a Paladin?
4. Why did Queen Imogen choose to make them one of her Paladins?

We'll use your answers to come up with four 'Aspects', which are little descriptive phrases about your character. In-game, you'll be able to spend 'Fate Points' to use them for bonuses on your rolls. They'll also sometimes cause you trouble, which will give you more Fate Points to spend later.

To answer your questions:

1. Yes, I wanted him to fill the role of an Assassin or Trickster role, but if it's not possible. A duel wielding Samurai or something. He only hunted and killed people who made other people lives a misery and never suffer repetition for their crimes, like nobels, or high ranking Military so kinda like a Robin Hood with a mixture of Yuri Lowell (Hero of Tales of Vesperia)

2. My character flaws tend to be that he can be blind to a problem, he's also not a very good leader but he'll fill the role if theirs no other option. He can also be a bit of a skirt chaser, or a flirt so to speak, which has lead to more then one sticky situation.

3. Hmm, I would say. He was an assassin for hire, doing the dirty jobs to provide for his younger siblings. His parents were murdered when he was a young boy so he found himself having to grow up quickly to care for his younger siblings.

4. To be honest, depending on the circumstances, I would say. He was chosen because of his undying loyalty to his family and to protect those who can't protect themselves.

So it sounds to me like you want a low rank for Command and a high rank for Athletics and Battle as a start.

Battle is your personal attack and defense skill, allowing you to strike hard and accurate whilst also being able to parry your opponents. Athletics is of course nimbleness and ability to move around but also allows you to defend yourself through dodging enemy blows.

Considering their time as a Paladin I'd recommend at least a 1 in Command to show that the character has been learning during their time serving Queen Imogen, but again that's all up to you and how far you want to go with that. Command is basically the battle skill for when you are leading troops rather than fighting alone and you did state that you want that to be a weakness of the character.

Basically I'd recommend looking at the skill list and deciding what skills are important for your vision of the character now that you have a clear goal in mind. Skills are the backbone of the character mechanically in FATE and determine most everything they can do aside from stunts which are good to think about but a lot harder to grasp so we will leave those alone for the moment. If you look at my character you'll notice that for my skill ranks I made a table and there is a reason for that. While you have 20 points to spend on skills we are using the tower/column system which means that for every skill rank you need to fill every slot below it. If you have one skill at +4 then you also need one skill at +3, +2, and +1 to 'support it'.

Cool, that gives us a lot to work with! An assassin or trickster should definitely be possible.

Our next step is to sum those up into your four Aspects: High Concept, Trouble, Background, and Knighthood. I've got some suggestions based on what you've written, but you can come up with anything that you feel sums up the character well.

High Concept:
Yes, I wanted him to fill the role of an Assassin or Trickster role, but if it's not possible. A duel wielding Samurai or something. He only hunted and killed people who made other people lives a misery and never suffer repetition for their crimes, like nobels, or high ranking Military so kinda like a Robin Hood with a mixture of Yuri Lowell (Hero of Tales of Vesperia)
Sounds like you could be something like a Former Vigilante or a Vengeful Assassin (I'm guessing the murder of his parents partly inspired this?). You could also go for something a bit more abstract and evocative, focusing on the idea that he punishes people who deserve it, and be a Deadly Punisher or a Blade of Justice.

Trouble:
My character flaws tend to be that he can be blind to a problem, he's also not a very good leader but he'll fill the role if theirs no other option. He can also be a bit of a skirt chaser, or a flirt so to speak, which has lead to more then one sticky situation.
A couple of good options here depending on which you want to focus on. Maybe he's Prone to Tunnel Vision, Single-minded, or Blind to his own flaws. He could be Not a born leader. Skirt chaser works on its own, or maybe Incorrigible flirt or Really gets around. You'll get Fate Points when this causes trouble for you, so you want to pick something that you're happy to see come up a lot.

Background:
Hmm, I would say. He was an assassin for hire, doing the dirty jobs to provide for his younger siblings. His parents were murdered when he was a young boy so he found himself having to grow up quickly to care for his younger siblings.
Lots of options here, too. Former assassin for hire is good, but might overlap a bit with your High Concept (that could even be your High Concept). My parents were murdered is pretty cool, and you could extend that out to say who killed them, or why (My parents were murdered by a corrupt noble, My parents were murdered for coin). You could focus on his ties to his remaining family, with something like Eldest Orphan. Forced to grow up quickly is another option.

Knighthood:
To be honest, depending on the circumstances, I would say. He was chosen because of his undying loyalty to his family and to protect those who can't protect themselves
The circumstances are really up to you, within reason and with Liminal's approval, so you can flesh that out a bit more if you'd like. It sounds like this could be something like Undying family loyalty or Protector of the weak, though.

Once you've got those sorted, the next step is picking Skills. M'lord Dreamcrusher has some good advice there. The easiest way to do it is to look through the list in Liminal's post, and then pick 8 skills which you'd like to be good at. Two of those will be +4s, two +3s, two +2s, and two +1s. Dreamcrusher mentioned that you'll probably want Athletics and Battle; for an assassin, I'd also recommend Fitness (which you gives you a bit of extra health), Stealth, and maybe Larceny.

(If there's more than 8 you want, that's fine too; it means you get fewer skills at the higher end, but are more well-rounded.)

Hey all! Sorry for the silence this past week; real life got in the way, like it does

I want to thank our Fate veterans for helping out the newbies so much while I've been indisposed. Looking over all the advice DC and Silverbird have provided, I have nothing to dispute. That said, I'm still a little discombobulated, so can I ask everyone who's around as of now to just toss up a quick reminder of their current status in this thread? Just so I can take stock of where we stand, and see if anyone needs any help or info from me. Thanks, folks!

I'm still interested. Also been a lil busy lately. I sent you a pm with questions about the character I'm working on :)

Stunts are not terribly difficult to figure out but they can be tricky starting out considering the rules are foreign. Firstly I recommend looking on the SRD for the basic examples as well as looking over any completed character sheets in this thread for more examples.

Stunts are what make your character unique and should be written in a way that either provides your character with the means of doing something that would otherwise be against the rules (perhaps being able to use stealth to defend against ranged attacks) or just give situational bonuses (such as Xedel's +2 to battle when fighting other dragons.).

Truthfully those are the two most basic types of stunts but really anything could work so long as it isn't too powerful and the DM approves it. If anything jumps to mind then write it out and suggest it so you can get feedback. If you have any ideas that seem cool but you don't know how the mechanics should function then also feel free to explain and some of us might be able to offer suggestions on how to write it up.

Ok, so after some thought, I came up with a character that should better fit into the campaign. Let me know what you think.

Gender: Female

Age: 20

Height: 5’ 2”

Weight: 120lbs

Eyes: Bright Red

Hair: Bright red, strait bobcut.

Description: Katrina is short, has a very tone, muscular build compared to most women, and A cup breasts. Her skin is a slightly dark tan. She normally dresses in a blouse and short shorts made of sturdy material. In battle, she wears the standard Pegasus Knight outfit of a breastplate, a short, red skirt, and boots that go past her knees. She also has one dress for special occasions, that is a simple, plain yellow. Her face is usually stern and serious, but she does lighten up after a single drink, only to enter a deep sorrow if she has 4.

High Concept: Vengeful Pegasus Knight Loner
During the Battle of Larker Hill, her Pegasus, Penelia, was shot down and killed, and her right leg was fractured. She managed to get up, and keep fighting, but towards the end of the fighting she got stabbed in the leg, breaking it. The break was so severe, that even after treatment, it still causes pain, and she still walks with a limp. She uses her lance as a cane to help her walk. Every time it hurts, she is reminded of her friends and Pegasus that died in that battle. She has never forgiven the empire of Ralis from taking so much from her.

Katrina never knew her parents, and was raised in an orphanage. She was a tomboy that had to struggle to survive. One day, when she was only 8, she saw beautiful Pegasus knights flying through the sky. From then on, she worked her hardest to become a Pegasus knight. She joined the army at 14, became a cavalier at 16, and was finally allowed to become a Pegasus rider at 18, after proving herself in combat again and again.
When Katrina had turned 19, she had been made a Sergeant. She led a squad of Pegasus knights into battle with a whole battalion, whose orders were to protect Larker Hill until reinforcements could arrive. Though she fought valiantly, they were heavily outnumbered, and Katrina was shot down. She survived partly on skill, partly because her own soldiers sacrificed themselves to save her, and mostly because of luck. By the time the reinforcements arrived, she was the only soldier left, but the reinforcements were able to route the enemy. After recovering from the battle to the extent she could, she was awarded a medal for heroism, and offered a place on the Paladins. At this point, she never wants someone else to die for her again.

Relationship: N/A
Note: for my level 1 Vassals, I have a squad of Pegasus Knights. After the battle of Larker Hill, experienced Pegasus knights are few and far between, and Katrina has kept her distance from the new recruits, and not yet formed a bond with them.

+5
+4Battle Fitness
+3 Will Riding
+2 Fieldcraft Perception
+1 Athletics Vassals

One Women Army: When Katrina has no allies in a zone or is only with her Pegasus, she has +2 to all battle actions.

I Will Not Let Anyone Else Die: When Katrina on her Pegasus and is in the same zone of an Ally that someone is attacking or creating an advantage against, she can fly in between and make the Defend action. Katrina takes the consequences of any failure.

Eye Above the Battlefield: if Katrina is in zone with no airborne enemies or archers, she can create advantages in adjacent zones with Perception and Fieldcraft.

I think I have a pretty solid idea of how to write my character now. This will be the first draft

Age: 25

Height: 6ft 4inchs

Weight: Healthy

Eye colour: Bright blue

Hair: Blonde short hair

Description: Mike's a tall man with a scar that sit upon his right eye from a complication that arose during one of his assassin contracts, though he does mention it was the Nobelman daughter that gave it to him. Mike wears a more traditional assassin armour, a hooded robe that has the ability to help him blend in with his surroundings. When not on a mission, the clock is pure white with gold trims along the arms, Neck and hood.

High Concept: Blade of Justice
Mike has gained and lost many friends and enemies due to his flirtation nature. It was due to him sleeping with a nobelman daughter that he gained his scar in the first place. He used her to get to the target and suffer the consequences of that choice.

Being the oldest of three siblings, after some corrupted Nobels kill his parents, Mike found himself having to grow up quick. Taking on the odd jobs to help his siblings survive, it was thanks to Mike that his sibling's were able to grow up in relatively good health and survive the long harsh days and nights

Even though, both his siblings have now long grown up and followed their own paths in life.

Relationship: N/A

Profile is still a work in progress but this is what I've been able to get done before I have to start my other jobs. I intend to finish this before the end of the day though.

Hey! I'm still around; Edgar is ready to go save for his relationship, and is posted back on page 2.

Vivienne is looking good Unknown. Still needs a bit of fluff and the super scary stunts but she seems like a solid character in terms of backstory and skills so far. Seems the type that would share a mutual respect with Xedel for his mind though probably butt heads on matters of conflict.
