I often have trouble writing RP request threads, not because I don't have ideas it's just that they don't fit neatly into any particular style most of the time.

So thinking about my style of writing/rp'ing, I tend to think...

Contrast - I like contrasts. I like the idea of the really hot guy who looks all so perfect yet hides a secret about his body. Or the shy girl who is about to do porn or some kind of extreme sexual act. I like the idea of the otherwise normal or nice guy being pushed in some way or just having a to hell with it all moment and doing something out of character etc.

Challenge/Dilemma - As per above, I like characters who are challenged by what is happening and what they are about to do. I get bored if they are doing it just because it sounds like fun to them. I want it to push them in a way, even if they do like it, they are still at odds with it.

Realistic, to a degree - This is an odd one as many of the situations/themes aren't always plausible. But I still like the responses of the characters to be so. I don't want it to start looking like a porn film where someone delivers pizza and the recipient offers sex in return for example. Even my smut based ideas area about how the characters deal with the situation and each other.

Multi dimensional characters - No one is all good or all bad. Even the bogey man of the 20th century was an animal loving, vegetarian, non drinker. You can be horny and still chaste, you can be mean and still loving, you can be married and still have sex with someone else......

Interesting situations/stories - In the end I love how the characters work their way through things. Sometimes it may be a really simple premise, a woman being offered money for sex for example. But just because it is simple it doesn't mean the execution has to be simple. Why is she being offered money, is she married, a virgin, off limits in some way? etc etc I like both complex and simpler scenarios but they do have to be interesting.

I like turning things on their head as well, sometimes being somewhat satiric. I recently started a RP where WW3 has broken out and the "Woke" type girl realizes her best bet for survival is all of those armed and strong "Deplorable" men. So things that interest me whether they are political or otherwise.

Reversal of usual gender roles - I like the idea of a male stripper with an older woman. The older female teacher getting involved with her male student. The woman being in charge in some way. Things like that intrigue me and are a break from the usual roles.

Smut to story ratio - This is something I have been seeing a lot of in RP request threads. I am not sure if I can really break it down to a percentage. I tend to go with what the story needs. That said all smut or a smut montage will bore me to tears. I don't need to go to the effort of typing things out, I have an imagination, I can imagine this stuff on my own. I want someone who will create a story with me.

With me even when the theme is smutty it doesn't mean it is necessarily about the smut. It tends to be more about the characters and their communication/experience.

Pre-planning - I like some pre planning discussion. At first it is all about getting to know the person and seeing if you are compatible. I don't like pre planning it to the point that there isn't any surprises left anymore though. Sometimes it can feel like the RP has played itself out in discussion alone.

Post Length - I'm pretty open but no one liners please! Anything more than say 6 paragraphs can start feeling like work though!

Face Claims - I don't need them. I really don't need them if you like to use anime or animated characters. I don't relate. A basic description is fine.

Dark themes - I love me the darkness!

Original ideas - I don't mind if you want to use a film or tv show etc as inspiration but I don't do fandoms. I don't watch/play/read anything so deeply that I could pull off the accuracy required and I don't like the idea of being governed by pre existing conditions/settings.

So how would you describe your RP style?

Weird and mildly complicated. I think I'll refer to the above to go point by point.

Contrast - I'm game in the sense meant here. I can have plenty of fun exploring the physique of a more standard character/setup, but a bit of subversion is sometimes very nice.
Challenge/Dilemma - It is enjoyable to have a character in a conflict; but again, I've been appreciating simplicity a bit more lately. I've had my head in the clouds with attempts at long term plot driven stuff that I kinda burnt out on it and decided to go for fun and stuff while keeping an eye out for partners I can truly explore this dynamic with. This answer and the above apply to multiple categories.
Realistic, to a degree - I drive for highly realistic, pending suspension of disbelief as agreed upon before the roleplay. So, if we agree to have an area where kinky shit is the cool thing to do, I will write in consistency to that, otherwise I will make a context-sensitive best guess on how that would be received by my main and any other characters in my control.
Multi dimensional characters - Amen to this. I don't advertise it much, but I believe in characters that have various triggers to inspire different sorts of reactions that are based on how they fundamentally are, their histories, their biases, so on and so forth, stuff I don't tend to detail out before the start of the game and leave to be explored or not in a scenario.
Interesting situations/stories - Answer two, though by no means am I ruling out a creative take. In fact, when I see lists of pairings, I consider it a minigame as to how I can viably combine multiple together for a functional, fun roleplay soup. I also do enjoy reversing conventional situations; a thief that fails, an assassination gone wrong, whatever, and the dame idea at a larger scale going for serious plots.
Reversal of usual gender roles - Doesn't do a great deal for me as a concept, though I certainly indulge it.
Smut to story ratio - I've been seeking a predominant lean to the former lately, mostly because I just want to explore some on-the-spot character takes and emotions while saving the full suite of effort for the times I find people I'd like to make a true story with, if I find them. I'm kinda easy to get into with short term simple stuff, but I've gotten really picky on more serious content. But make no mistake, I have a long record on a 100% story to 0% smut ratio, and sometimes I just like it that way, because I'm not driven by kink and I have other places that still work to hit that niche as I want to refresh it.
Pre-planning - Premise and who's doing what, as well as details necessary to get the ball rolling. At times, what kind of points we want to hit and what we anticipate things generally going into. I don't believe in detailing the story out at all and I am almost certainly going to indulge in a change of plans if they match what works at the time. Really, what I skimp in planning sometimes is easily matched by a healthy OOC conversation.
Post Length - 200 words when I have little to work with, less when I'm starving to exercise agency that I just don't have thanks to a mis-paced exchanged, 300-400 on a more usual basis with moderate content, 500-600 with more substantive content, more sometimes on a well-motivated intro or an especially deep character take with a good bit to respond to and do. More tends to come with more characters. I consider progression and imparting notable details more important than any length quota. I'm not your partner if you want reliable 1000+ word exchanges.
Face Claims - They only work for me if I built a character from one in the first place; otherwise it's nigh impossible for me to find one that works. If you make suggestions prior to RP start and don't seem to be hunting for someone to play specific people you're imagining, I'll probably indulge you as I get some interest out of making something completely new out of a picture. Just be warned what I derive from it will likely have little to do with what it was representing.
Dark themes - Quite doable and something I openly indulge to some extent. I can go far darker, fully including gruesome horror, extensive emotional damage and more, provided I have a partner that I really do work out well with. I don't get into that state of mind lightly and it takes out more from me than usual.
Original ideas - I'm all for a unique context, though if you have predispositions towards how it's set up beyond generic and want me to follow them, you should probably be playing game master. There's a number of canons I am comfortable with writing something in, and as long as you put in an effort, I don't expect you to even match my grasp on them. And, if you really just want to learn, I'm inclined to spend a good part of our interactions just explaining necessary details.

Burn out happens on the more complex plots. That said, I get burned out or just plain bored with smut based as well. I think with plot based you really need a good or at least like minded writer as a partner. Someone to build up the relationship/interaction between the two characters. That can be difficult at times so you end up getting them to have sex or do something sexual to keep the RP going.

Doesn't always work though!

Some of my fave RP's have been where the characters don't or infrequently do anything sexual.

I like contrast and for the characters to be challenged as well. Whatever is happening, I like at least one of the characters to be like "What am I even thinking about this!?"

I also like realism even if the plot is far fetched. I think about how someone like MC would actually think, feel and respond to the crazy situation. I like their response to be within the character type. A shy nervous type just taking to stripping like a duck to water isn't interesting or plausible to me.

Multi dimensional characters - I have annoyed many people with this! We all have different sides to us no one is all good or evil etc.

I like to engage with my partner and feel like they are just as invested as I am.

I like any sex/kink to be relevant to the story and for it to compliment the story.

I like direction and know that the plot is leading somewhere.

I prefer original ideas.

I'm open on post length, I prefer quality over quantity.

I like various themes.

Interesting stories and themes, I like twists especially on usual gender roles. I also like twists on the usual tropes and just different takes on ideas in general.

To describe in a single word:

"Flowery."

I'm almost exclusively story-based as well unless I can find the rare person that aligns with my kinks, down to the minutiae. But that has almost never happened.

Punky.

Not like steampunk, or rustpunk, or cyberpunk or any of those punks. I read a lot of writer's whose voice has a lot of bite to it. And, like any good thief, I absorb a thing or two along the way.

Erotically erratic, I think is a good way to describe it.

Contrast - People who don't look like what they are inside (handsome criminal) or who absolutely do. Differences in couples, villain x heroine, each making a couple steps toward the other.

Challenge/Dilemma - See above. There needs to be something, whether in between the couple or an apocalypse

(stealing)

Multi dimensional characters - A must. I do fanon and will develop the characters accordingly.

Interesting situations/stories - I need it to be psychological and deep. There can be a ton of smut (this only works if we have perfect characters or I'm bored) but there will be angst, reflexion, fun, jealousy, SOMETHING. Ideally a plot leading to something out of the bedroom too.

Reversal of usual gender roles - Not so much. Fun for a scene, but not so much. This doesn't mean "red blood" men, or whatever Americans call it. But it means I do not enjoy going out of my way to reverse.

Smut to story ratio - Story please, involving smut.

Pre-planning - I will not go without an arc, a direction. Too many bad experiences. I enjoy knowing what's coming next. Surprised that STAY WITHIN OUR DISCUSSION are good.

Post Length - At least a paragraph. Never ever **

Face Claims - Pic, realistic drawing, ornothing

Dark themes - I love me the darkness!

Original ideas - I love originals and fandoms.

Expression based and try to give my partner a perfect picture of what my character's face and body language look like. Speech is usually spaced out by some characters, who may be thinking as they speak. Nervous twitches and habits if applicable, tapping of the feet, bouncing of the leg. "Uhms" and "Ahs" when they talk sometimes, unless eloquent speakers. I dunno if that's a style, but that's how I like to do.

Ambitious, sometimes clever. Wildly inconsistent. I think all of my partners would say something like that and that's something I agree on. When I write I'm fine but I lose the spark fast unless I really click with someone.

In terms of actual content, conversational and I know that's not great for some people. I write how I talk and it's not for everyone. I'll insert little jokes into narration, I'll read it in my mind as I would, not getting that others won't read it that way.

Plot is the foundation, characters are what build upon it and eroticism is the interior design; each are important and have their place.

For RP, the foundation has to be solid and accommodating. It belongs to me and my cowriter, and needs to hold both our ideas and desires, from the start and as they expand. I think the beginning is crucial because it ensures enough compatibility to create together. This is where pre-planning, story:smut ratio, themes and preferences are. If they can't be decided on, the structure is compromised and we'll probably waste each other's time. RP is a hobby and meant to be fun first and foremost; I don't want to spend free time on unenjoyment and don't wish that for others either.

Characters construct the walls and roof, which are equally necessary. Their backgrounds, personalities, motives, beliefs, chemistry, relations, roles, perfections and nons, are lifeblood. Without those, there's only a foundation - and what good is that with nothing on it? Some start on their own sides and connect in the middle when it's natural, whereas others build with each other from go. It depends on how they are and how the writing rolls itself. Multi-dimensions, challenges/dilemmas, contrasts, victories/losses and bonds are here.

After that's done, it has to be brought together: paint, furniture, artwork, knickknacks. Few of my RPs are smut-centric, so they lack a lot of the above. Most are a mix of story and sex, so there's a little decorating done as things are built. It may be the last part, but it's important too. If you reach the erotica and find your likes oppose or your characters lack that spark, things halt and you're left with a shell. RP, to me, isn't fun in a shell.

Good story and writing that I can really sink teeth into is my main focus in how I RP. I aim to be enthralled and excited...and more than that, I want to enthrall and excite my partners. I ask a fair amount of questions during first contact because I try tailoring to them and likewise request open OOC. It's such a happy feeling when a partner back-reads and compliments how much of a story it really is. I love doing that too and rediscovering details or learning new ones. And I adore seeing how far characters have come, how the world and plotline expanded around them. There's truly something wonderful about RP. I'll also say that I look for those similar. No one can be exactly like another, but the two of us have to invest in moving the parts together. Their interest and involvement is as vital as mine for partnership to work.

Anyways, that's my modus!

I'm probably difficult as I like smut based STORIES! Emphasis on story and interesting characters!

Contrast - Yes, I like contrasts also. I want the chubby girl to become a stripper or nude model, I want the guy with the small dick to be a porn star! I want the mature woman who has taken up photography to do her first nude shoot with a male model who is posing nude for the first time.

Challenge/Dilemma - I like quirks and characters being counter intuitive. For example recently I was reading about models posing nude for the first time. One woman said she was nervous about it and during the short break, she remained nude rather than putting her robe back on. I find that fascinating as you would think she would want to get dressed ASAP. But I get it as well. It was more of a challenge for her to take it off than to remain nude. Almost like she wanted to avoid the challenge of it again. I like challenges and dilemma's a lot.

Realistic, to a degree - YES! I don't care what the scenario is and if it is not that plausible, I still want the characters to behave realistically.

Multi dimensional characters - Another yes for me. The well read and intelligent male stripper or the dowdy housewife about to do webcam porn. I want that and it goes with challenges as per above.

Interesting situations/stories - Yes. Although a lot of my ideas involve smut, they are more about how the characters will deal with it, how they think and what they are feeling and thinking. I am more for the lead up then the finale. I also want to know why characters are doing the things they are doing. What is driving them.

Reversal of usual gender roles - Again yes. I like my male characters to be objectified or find themselves in roles normally reserved for women. I like CFNM which reverses the usual nude female for a nude male in front of clothed females.

Smut to story ratio - I like smut to work in with the story to be relevant. To compliment it rather than just feel added on because my partner is getting their jollies or doesn't know what else to write.

Pre-planning - I like some pre planning discussion. At first it is all about getting to know the person and seeing if you are compatible. I don't like pre planning it to the point that there isn't any surprises left anymore though. Sometimes it can feel like the RP has played itself out in discussion alone. (Couldn't say it better than that, so just borrowing from OP).

Post Length - 2-4 paragraphs is more than enough. One liners suck. Writing epics every post is a drag.

Face Claims - I don't need them. I really don't need them if you like to use anime or animated characters. I don't relate. A basic description is fine. (borrowing from OP as I agree).

I can't edit it seems so I just wanted to add - Purpose - I like the RP to have some direction and purpose. I am not really big on the idea that the RP can just meander on forever. I am quite good with it having an ending and the starting something new if we enjoyed writing together.

I see it as trying to tell a story or a narrative. Trying to pardon the obvious - role play the character. Bringing the character to life and responding in a manner that suits the character, the plot and the tone of the RP itself. Some RP's are shorter and more for fun others get more serious. I try and keep that in mind when writing. I like to write characters with depths and for them to have idiosyncrasies and contradictions. For them to be more than just a cardboard cutout that has sex or has crazy things done to them etc.

Having some kind of journey's end in mind helps as well. Where is it all leading? Why? I don't like RP's that feel like they could go on endlessly.

I am happy 3-4 paragraphs in general. Anymore really does feel like work. Less feels pointless.

I cover various themes and genre's. Not all of them are smutty.
