On the first of November, in the year 1284, Astral Academy, the premier school for any Astrai that desires to learn the real limits of Astral energy, was once more taking in new applicants. Every year thousands upon thousands of people applied for entry. However only hundreds will manage to make the cut. Astral Academy's requirements are strict and work very well to cull the numbers. Entering this school to master Astral energy manipulation requires you already have a powerful grasp on it. This is not a school for the novices and wide eyed aspiring adventurers. This school is for future legends and masters in the making.
The application process is lengthy and quite grueling, lasting the entire month of November. First, applicants must send in the paper form, a staggering 100 pages that defeat many weak willed contenders alone. Adding in you only have until the 3rd of November to send it in, and you've got an effective method to weed out anyone not fully committed. Assuming the application is accepted, you'll next need to travel to the nearest testing site to you. There are several dozen on the continent of Astra, however they are all in remote locations, away from any cities or heavily populated areas. Regardless of where you live, it will be a long trip simply for the chance to be accepted, to the list of students they are considering to accept into the school.
After arriving at the testing site on the 7th of November at the absolute latest, each applicant will be given a 500 question test to complete. They will have 5 hours to finish and it will be graded on site. Any applicant that answers more than 50 questions wrong will be disqualified on the spot. All passing applicants will then be privately tested on their unique abilities with Astral. For the most part a generalized test for each class suffices, however individual abilities are taken into account and special tests may be issued on that basis. It is at this stage that Rak'Shan who manage to get past the previous hurdles are subjected to the challenges that attempt to provoke them into a rage. Should they fail and enter a blood rage, a highly skilled Astrai will attempt to restrain them. 7 times out of 10, this is impossible and the Rak'Shan are simply executed on the spot, their remains sent back to wherever they originated, or wherever the Rak'Shan requested in their original forms.
After passing the Astral test for other students and the rage test for Rak'Shan, one final test is issued. Each student must leave the testing site and will search the surrounding 500 Km area for an item, usually some sort of fancy egg or small statue depending on the particular testing site, and then return it in tact. The areas they are searching are difficult to maneuver and hazardous as well. It is not uncommon for people to die at this stage. In addition to the natural dangers, each applicant is in competition with one another, and nonlethal combat is permitted, as is trickery and other such things, so long as you retrieve an item. The applicants that complete this final challenge, are welcomed into Astral Academy.
The application process in its entirety is usually completed by the end of the month. Testing so many applicants individually consumes most of the time, hence the strict requirements for arrival initially. The month of December is given to the passing applicants to settle whatever they must before leaving their homes.
Today, is the first of January, year 1285. New students to Astral Academy arrive on the docks and begin to make their way towards the main school building. To reach it, you would need to travel up the hill, through a forest and into the center of a small collection of mountains. The weather could freeze most to the bone, as Astral Academy begin their years at the coldest part of winter. Anyone who couldn't handle a little snow wouldn't last here. Luckily students being turned away by the weather was very rare.
In the sea of students making their way towards the main building, there was a very large number of Reizaan and Humans. There were also a few dozen elves, however there didn't seem to be any Zeiloustrians. Granted given their shorter stature, one could be mere feet away at any given moment. Upon arriving at the grand courtyard, which was quite large to accommodate so many students, they began to relax a little. There was still plenty of time before the opening ceremony, so students decided to mingle, meet each other, the normal stuff. However, one person seemed completely isolated. There was someone on their knees, playing in the snow. Most people were doing everything they could to NOT touch the freezing snow, so it was quite unusual that someone was playing with it. Their hands were moving, as if gathering it. Their backs were facing the bulk of the students and a tree was in front of them, so getting a peek at them wasn't gonna be done subtly. On top of that, they were wearing some unusual clothing that covered them entirely from behind. The only way to learn who this was, was to use the direct approach.
To make things stranger, this person was completely isolated. Sure, other students were on their own, not talking to people, but they at least had other groups a few feet away from them. This person, it was as if a wall was erected to keep people away, not allowing anyone to get near. A hole in this sea of students. This alone would be agonizing for anyone with an especially curious mind to turn away from.
