Does anyone else make playlists for characters/stories?

No, I have not done this. I have done a them song for a character though. But now that you gave me this idea I shall run with it.

I'm much too picky, I'll frequently argue with myself, wondering if a song fits the character lol. I often just settle with one or two nice ones that I feel that they might listen to instead of what might describe them / their situation.

I don't know about making playlists, but when I write replies I tend to put on music that fits the scene to get into the headspace.

Not playlists but usually when I write I listen to music to set the scene. I may try this out though to see what happens.

I like to listen to music to set the scene/write ideas and get into a character but I also have youtube lists devoted to just certain characters or types of ideas.

A partner of mines does this - I haven't myself. Caught my off-guard at first, but admittedly it's pretty awesome for getting into the mood for certain scenes

I’ve never successfully finalized a playlist for any non-fandom RP, but I’ve spent an awful lot of time telling my partners “hey, this song is perfect for this character/plot/situation”.

Fandoms are easier. But even then, I spend a lot of time looking for cool and unusual variants of the theme music from the movie or TV show (like this delightful smooth jazz cover of the Doctor Who theme).

Now that I think about it, all of the characters I've made playlists for started out as fandom characters. It is a lot easier because you've got the tone of whatever the show/film/etc is to help out with choosing songs.

I always do this. However, it might not be per character. Sometimes it’s per roleplay. I mean I certainly do that for characters. Which, if I might add, Spotify is perfect for it! But I really enjoy doing it for roleplays too. Really helps to set the mood of the story and scenes.

I was just about to say, yeah, I do this too. Role-plays in general, not specific characters.

I always get into that trouble where I keep adding songs to one character over others because some characters don't make me think of any. Or two characters can fit a particular song and I hate listing it twice almost as much as I hate having to choose one over the other. And I never have a set standard for a character playlist. Like, are these songs that represent the character/would be playing as their theme when they enter a scene? All of the time, or just a particular scene/mood? Or are these songs that this character would be listening to and in that way represent their taste, yet not who they are as a character?

So, I much prefer a big very general catch all role-play list where all of those things count and I don't have to organize them or be specific.

I couldn’t agree more with this post. I love finding music specifically for scenes. Especially ones that portray a certain feeling or that you can envision actually playing like in a television or movie scene as things are playing out in the scene. And like you, I hate listening to the same song twice. For me it’s a lot more fun to hear multiple songs while writing a scene. Especially because one song might sway me to write a character to do one thing and then another might inspire me to write a character do something else!

I never used to make playlists but I would often hear some music and it would take on an entirely new meaning for me when I suddenly felt an association between that track and my character. I've started making playlists more recently, along with making pinterest / mood boards of images.

I've done this occasionally, and it can be a great exercise. It's not something I religiously, though. I've done it for certain characters in stories I've written in the real world, but online I tend to do it only for musically-inclined characters.

I sometimes incorporate music into my roleplaying, if I feel a piece would fit the tone (whether diabetic or otherwise) of a particular scene. I also have based characters partially on certain songs that strike up inspiration in the past.

Never got into that. Normally I cant even listen to music and write at the same time.
:'c

I have two or three playlists for when I write and depending on the character is what genre I listen to.
