Mass Effect: Pilgrimage (Survivor00 & Romantic[Dream])

The Citadel
Lower Wards Access Tunnel
2183

â??Keelah!â?

Tali'Zorah nar Rayya stood nervously in the alleyway behind the Upper Markets, folding her arms loosely over her chest as she waited for Fist to arrive with the Shadow Broker. The young quarian looked around quickly, before exhaling with a heavy sigh, shifting her posture. She had already been waiting here for far longer than she had wanted to, and the only other being she had seen in that time was the lone keeper that stood across from her. The aphid-like creature was far more concerned with the console before it than it was with her; it hadnâ??t even looked at her since she had arrived. She did not like this, not one bit. The meeting location was too ambush prone, a narrow alley with only two exits. It would be easy for her to get boxed in if the deal went badlyâ?¦

â??Calm yourself Tali. Fist promised to set up the meeting. You are just being paranoidâ?¦â? She spoke to herself. Although in her opinion she had every reason to be paranoid, having been chased all the way to the Citadel and shot for the information she possessed. Thankfully, she did not get an infection from it. And Fist didnâ??t seem like the most trusting person out there. The man looked as if he would sell out his own mother if it would benefit him. But Fist was her only link to the Shadow Broker, and if she had to work through him to get shelter, then so be it. Tali sighed, so much trouble for a simple Geth memory core.

She sighed. This was not how she had imagined her Pilgrimage to wind up, bartering with criminals to gain protection from a turian. A turian working with the Geth, no less. Making sure nobody was around â?? excluding the keeper - Tali activated the Omni-tool on her arm, accessing the partial audio log she had salvaged from the memory core.

â??Eden Prime was a major victory!â? Sarenâ??s authoritative bark rang out. She knew the voice belonged to a turian even before she knew which one. No other species carried that distinctive vocal flange. â??The beacon has brought us one step closer to finding the conduit.â?

Another voice followed his, a female, her voice sultry and wizened with experience. â??And one step closer to the return of the Reapersâ?¦â? She did not know who this voice belonged to. The files she collected did not identify her. She deactivated the Omni-tool, not wanting to risk exposing herself anymore than she had.

She had ventured further into the Gethâ??s memory core, trying to see what she could find on the â??Reapersâ??. To say the information she had uncovered had startled her was an understatement. While it was common knowledge that the Geth were sentient, she had never in a million years expected them to worship somethingâ?¦ When she had followed the Geth, she had seen them construct...temples to the Reapers, but why? Why would a synthetic life form bother using time and resources to build something like that? Maybe it was to give them the purpose that her own people had not. Whatever the reason, the fact they had allied under this Saren worried her. From what the Geth believed about the Reapers, they had been the ones that destroyed the Protheansâ?¦

A muffled report from the direction of Choraâ??s Den quickly grabbed her attention, and she spun towards the door to the Lower Wards. Her hand twitched towards the pistol holstered to her thigh. She knew that Choraâ??s Den was not the mostâ?¦prestigious establishment on the Citadel, but it sounded as if there was a war going on. She began to back away towards the Upper Wards. This was not safe. She would have to tell Fist that she wanted to meet elsewhere, somewhere safer, more privateâ?¦

The door to the Upper Wards hissed open behind her, and she quickly turned to see another turian walking down the steps towards her. Fist was nowhere in sight, and she strongly doubted that this turian was the Shadow Broker. He saw her, and nodded slightly to himself, as if he was expecting her to be there. She frowned behind the mask of her exosuit, keeping her eyes on him and the two salarians in white, military armor that stayed behind, keeping a watchful eye on the door. She took a slight step backwards as the turian smugly approached, watching his eyes play over her body.

He smirked calmly. â??Did you bring it?â?

â??Whereâ??s the Shadow Broker? Whereâ??s Fist?â? She demanded.

The turianâ??s eyes smiled as he closed the distance until there was almost no space between them. â??Theyâ??ll be hereâ?¦â? He lifted his hand, placing it on the cloth shawl on the side of her head, sliding his hand down her neck, over her shoulder, and to her bicep. â??Whereâ??s the evidence?â?

She shoved his hand away from her in disgust, stepping back. â??No way. The dealâ??s off.â? The turian glared at her, but, seemed to accept this and stepped back, nodding slightly to the two salarians that had until now been discussing between themselves. They drew pistols and turned towards her, while the turian backed away and drew his own weapon. She only had one chance to escape.

Taliâ??s hand darted to the proximity mine that sat at her hip, flicking it towards the group of assassins. The device exploded at their feet, sending them sprawling and stunning the turian just enough for her to reach cover. She quickly sprinted for the cover of a pair of storage units, but she did not look back, only hoping she had crippled them. No such luck, for as she vaulted over the storage unit, she could hear and feel the impact of magnetically accelerated rounds thumping into the metal at her back. She knew she shouldnâ??t have trusted Fist with this! If she ever got her hands on him! She pulled her pistol from the holster on her thigh and fired blindly back over her cover.

She heard footsteps at the top of the stairwell behind her, and she swung her aim towards the trio that rushed in. She was getting boxed in! She knew this would happen! The trio startled her a little bit; it was not what she expected. Two humans, both female, dressed in Alliance battle armor and carrying some heavy arms, and aâ?¦a krogan mercenary? Quicky weighing her options, she knew could probably take down one of the humans, maybe wound the second if she was lucky, but the kroganâ?¦she was just no match. They lifted their weapons, and she braced for the hail of projectiles to hammer her position. She heard the guns fire, only, they werenâ??t shooting at her! She looked quickly to see the one of the salarians get torn to shreds under the barrage. She let out a cry of triumph and aimed back over her cover.

The turian assassin lifted a rocket launcher, aiming at the trio that was advancing down the stairs. She quickly stood and fired at him, three shots slamming into the turianâ??s side and stomach. His body spun towards her, pure rage blazing in his eyes. He centered the launcher on her and fired. Her eyes widened, and Tali threw herself away from the storage units, landing on her stomach a few feet away. The blast deafened her, the floor shaking and red-hot pieces of metal shrapnel ricocheting off the floor beside her, but her exosuit remained mercifully intact. She swung her arm up and around, centering the pistol on the head of the second salarian assassin. She fired twice in quick succession, the rounds snapping the assassinâ??s head back on its shoulders, the body toppling backwards, firing its weapon into the floor as it dropped.

The turian shouted at her, but the human woman rushed to her side, lifting a heavy-looking pistol and firing towards the turian assassin. The first round slammed his body into the wall, before the combined fire from the humans and krogan tore him apart, his body slumping lifelessly to the ground, his blood pooling around the corpse. Tali fired several more shots into his lifeless body in rage, before slowly pulling herself to her feet, the anger at her betrayal boiling inside. Her hands shook slightly as she spun towards her â??saviorsâ??. She swung her arm angrily towards the dead assassins.

â??Fist set me up! I knew I couldnâ??t trust him!â?

Wrex was the quickest to speak up. The Krogan was proud of his recent accomplishment. "Fist is dead. I killed him."

Shepherd took over from there though. She may have only been a human, but she was a natural leader, even when it came to more competitive and independent races and personalities. The Alliance Millitary soldier stepped forward from the other two, pistol down, so as to not be threatening. "Those must have been Saren's men. We've been looking for evidence to support our claim that he's been working with the Geth. While pursuing Fist, we learned about you. You have evidence against Saren, correct?"

(Sorry it's short. I just can't remember the exact lines from the game.)

(No worries. Weâ??re breaking the story just by pairing them up anyway. ^-^)

Taliâ??s eyes flicked over the Krogan that proudly announced the death of Fist. She was glad that he had got what was coming to him, but it was a shame she could not have done it herself. The quarian looked back to the two Alliance soldiers, the pistol raising ever slightly as the human stepped forward, however, as the woman had her weapon lowered in a gesture of goodwill, Tali did the same, holstering the weapon at her thigh. She would trust them for now. She listened intently to the humanâ??s words, giving her an understanding nod as she was asked about the data packet.

â??That is correct.â? She said, her voice soundly almost synthesized through the complex filter in her mask. â??Then I have a chance to repay you for saving my life. But not here.â? She looked around the body-littered corridor. Right now, she wanted to be as far away from here as possible. â??We need to go somewhere safeâ?¦â?

"The Embassies. You'll be safe there. C-Sec is close by there as well. Our ambassador would want to see the evidence anyway." Shepherd led the way after that, moving to the embassies as quickly as possible via the Citadel Transit System. There was something of a tense silence. Shepherd knew the ambassador would be pissed as hell. They did light up Chora's Den... And the alleyways... And a medical center earlier...

"What the hell do you think you're doing, Shepherd? You're on thin ice as it is after the meeting with the Council. And now I hear of you starting a firefight in Chora's Den... Then in the alleyways?" At least he hadn't heard about the medical facility. "And just who the hell are they?" The man motioned to both Tali and Wrex.

"Wrex. Mercenary." Simple words. Not much more needed than that really. At least, not in the Krogan's opinion. Shepherd wasn't inclined to disagree with him at this point.

Tali let off a slight groan at the mention of C-Sec, considering how they had detained her for several hours until they could verify her reason for being on the Citadel in the first place. But the Embassies were safe, nobody would be crazy enough to attack them â?? it would be like attacking the Citadel Tower â?? it couldnâ??t be done! She nodded, following the others as they escorted her to one of the Citadelâ??s Rapid Transport Systems. She could feel plenty of others giving her condescending looks, but accepted it. Many races looked down upon her kind for the creation of the Geth. Many thought the quarians deserved their exile and being stripped of their Citadel privilegesâ?¦ Even three hundred years had not been enough time to heal the wounds.

She did not speak during the ride back, peering out of the transport as it zipped between the Wards and the Presidium. It never ceased to amaze her just how big the Citadel was. The Flotilla housed seventeen million quarians, and yet, this place would still have room to spareâ?¦

Following the woman up to the Human Embassies, Tali rubbed her wrist softly, watching the doors part open before them. The man that waited there was one of the more bitter-looking humans she had seen in her brief stay here. His expression soured even more when they entered the room. As he berated the woman who had saved her, Tali stood quietly. Shepardâ?¦it was A curious nameâ?¦

When the Ambassadorâ??s attention was directed to her, she straightened slightly. â??My name is Tali. Tali'Zorah nar Rayya.â? She spoke coolly.

â??We donâ??t see many quarians here.â? The Ambassador ground on, â??Why did you leave the Flotilla?â?

Tali paced slightly, turning to face the whole group. â??I was on my Pilgrimage, my rite of passage into adulthood.â?

"Sir. Tali says she has vital information we can use to incriminate Saren." Shepard wanted to get to the point. Try and get the heat off herself for all the firefights. Saren needed to be brought down immediately. He'd betrayed everyone. And now the Geth were following him. For what reason, she didn't know. Yet. Tali knew.

"Tali, could you show us the evidence you got?"

((Ack short!))

Tali nodded when Shepard spoke. "Of course."

She continued to place softly as she explained, "During my travels, I began hearing reports of geth. Since they drove my people into exile, the geth have never ventured beyond the Veil. I was curious..." Her voice seemed to smile with those last words, before she became more serious, looking back over at Shepard. "I tracked a patrol of geth to an uncharted world. I waited for one to become separated from its unit. Then I disabled it and removed its memory core."

"Most of the care was wiped clean. But I salvaged something from it's audio banks." She lifted her arm and easily accessed the files from the Omni-tool once again.

â??Eden Prime was a major victory! The beacon has brought us one step closer to finding the conduit.â? Saren's voice rang throughout the office

"That's Saren's voice!" The Ambassador threw both hands onto his desk in heavy fists. He was completely shocked. This was much better evidence that he could have ever expected. It was enough on it's own to get Saren suspended from Spectre status. Maybe enough to get Shepard into the Spectres if he played his cards right.

"That proves he was on Eden Prime during the attack. With it, we can get the leverage we need to have his Spectre status revoked." Shepard said towards the Ambassador, as if he didn't already know. He had bigger plans for the evidence outside of just incriminating Saren.

"We have to get this before the council immediately. I'll set up the meeting. Meet me at the council building as soon as possible. God damn it we've got him."

Tali carefully interrupted the two humans, as excited as she was to get back at Saren for the attempts at her life, they should know everything that she had managed to find.

"Wait...there's more. Saren wasn't working alone." She quickly accessed the Omni-tool and replayed the recording for them, this time letting the sultry voice of the unknown woman speak as well. Maybe they would recognize her voice.

Unfortunately, the Ambassador didn't seem to know it either. "I don't recognize that other voice. The one talking about 'Reapers'"

"That's what I saw! In my vision!" Shepard realized it slowly. "That's what was slaughtering all those people... That's all the more reason we need to get this to the Council immediately." Shepard was excited over the prospect. They were starting to piece together then whole deal. Her mind at work, she tried to bring together what must be going on. "Saren must be reviving the Reapers in an effort to wipe out the human race. Maybe that's why the Geth follow him. They must think of the Reapers as gods, and Saren as their prophet... So to speak."

Ashley and Wrex were for lack of a better word, completely clueless. They'd said nothing the entire time. The figured the evidence against Saren was reason enough to be excited, though neither were showing any signs of it.

Tali blinked, surprised at just how quickly Shepard had figured it out. "Yes, in fact." She said in slight awe at the human. "According to the memory core, the Reapers were a hyper-advanced machine race that existed 50,000 years ago." She explained to the Ambassador. "The Reapers hunted the Protheans to total extinction, and then they vanished. At...least that's what the geth 'believe'..."

She looked back to Shepard, nodding her agreement to the human's statements. "The geth revere the Reapers as gods, the pinnacle of non-organic life. And they believe Saren knows how to bring the Reapers back..."

The Ambassador shook his head in disbelief. "The Council is just going to love this..." He spoke sardonically, but agreed, "We need to present this to the Council right away."

The krogan spoke up finally, directing his words at her. "What about her? The quarian?"

"My name is Tali!" She snapped back slightly.

She knew what she wanted to do, determined to stop the geth, to stop Saren. Tali looked towards Shepard, her voice sounding almost urgent when she spoke. "You saw me in the alley, Commander. You know what I can do. Let me come with you."

Sheprd nodded. "I'll allow it. You're better with electronics than I am. You're more than likely to be worthwhile considering our main enemy will be the Geth."

Ashley stepped forward and had something to say. "But Tali... What about your pilgrimage?"

((Ack! So short...))

Tali looked towards the other human woman, she had bee standing silent this entire time.

"Our Pilgrimage proves we are willing to give of ourselves for the greater good. What does it say about me if I turn my back on this?" She spoke truthfully. "Saren is a threat to the entire galaxy. My Pilgrimage can wait..." She looked back at Commander Shepard, nodding and smiling gratefully behind her faceplate.

"Thank you. You won't regret this." She walked over and stood at the human's side, turning to smile softly at her.

[Select party... Only one additional member is available right now. Tali'Zora nar Rayya. Party changed.]

"Meet me at the Counicil building at 1950 sharp, Shepard. Bring the Quarian. We finally got Saren, I don't want you screwing this up." Kind words from the ambassador.

"Yes sir." Shepard left, waving for Tali to come with her. Ashley would be going back to report to the Normandy. Wrex... Was going to go be Wrex. Probably retrieving his prize for killing Wrex. As the exited the Ambassador's room, she turned to face the Quarian. "Tali'Zora... I'm sorry for the way the ambassador was acting. He's always on my case about something or other. I fear some of the heat may have gone your way."

(Haha.)

Tali followed Commander Shepard out out the Human Embassy, pausing when the human turned to face her. For a moment it felt like the human was able to see right through her faceplate, and the quarian felt her heart race for a quick second. As she apologized for the Ambassador's actions, Tali just shook her head and lifted her hands in a calm gesture.

"There is no reason to apologize. I imagine you have all been through a lot of stress." She spoke calmly. "It is far from the indignities I have had to endure, I promise you. And as long as we stop Saren, I will be willing to put up with anything." Tali promised.

Shepard thought she could see the faint features of the womanly face behind the visor. But no... That couldn't be. The Quarian's visor was just solid purple from that side. She was curious as to how she looked without it though. She'd never seen a Quarian without the masks. After all, she'd never been on the Flotilla.

"Perhaps there is something you would like to do to relax? Saren's likely to have found out that you've escaped his grasp, so it'll be safer out there. And it'd be best for all of us if we were relaxed for the coming presentation before the Council. They're not the most laid-back bunch I've seen."

Tali wondered what the human was thinking, softly tapping the fingers of one hand against her thigh. "I...would not know what there is to do on this station. It is so...massive! The entire Flotilla could live here and still hardly see one another." She said, looking along the distance to where the horizon curved up into the distance. She shook her head slightly, looking at the lake that glittered in the artificial sunlight. A miracle of Prothean technology...

"I would have liked to visit Flux, during my stay, but I dare not return to the Wards..." She said with a tint of disappointment to her words. The music there had sounded so...catchy. She wished to get a copy of it to bring back with her to the Flotilla, but after the ambush, she still did not want to take the risks,

"We can go to Flux, Tali." Shepard feared not Saren's assassins. She was certain that she'd taken care of pretty much every threat with her forceful display in Chora's Den. "It's pretty safe in there too. There's an elevator in the area from C-Sec. Or the transit system stops in the upper floor of the markets. From either place, it's a short distance to Flux. If you're afraid of another attack, I promise to protect you."

Shepard offered a chance for the Quarian to relax, wanting her most recent teammate to be at ease a bit more than she was. She didn't exactly strike her as a soldier. Just a child trying to become an adult. She'd have to learn some discipline perhaps, but she also had the feeling that the Quarian would be a fine teammate when they got to tracking down Saren. She was so eager to help and work for the greater good.

Tali nodded. The human seemed more than capable of holding her own against Saren's assassins - maybe Saren himself - although hopefully it would not come to that. She shifted slightly, swaying her hip out slightly, not intending to be flirtatious, but appearing that way. "I would love to go to Flux then...the atmosphere seemed so lively." She smiled behind her faceplate, glad that Shepard would accompany her.

"If I may ask, Commander, what is your name?" Tali cocked her head curiously, stepping up to walk with the human towards Flux.

Shepard almost smiled. Almost. There was just a small curling of the lip. She hadn't really genuinely smiled in a long time. So really, Tali's agreement to go to Flux had made the commander pretty happy. She turned and waved a little to get the Quarian to follow her to the transit system. She liked the little zip-cars. Quick and easy.

"My full name is Catherine Shepard. I used to go by Kate before joining the Alliance Military. Then it just became Shepard. What should I call you? Tali'Zora nar Rayya is a bit unwieldy." She wanted to get to know Tali a bit better, so chatting at the bar in Flux seemed a good idea. She didn't know much of the Quarians at all. Learning about them, and her, would help foster their relationship for their upcoming operations.

Tali walked alongside her as they left the Embassies, her gaze occasionally slipping over to look over the human' body. Their kind were remarkably similar, as if they had been 'cut from the same cloth...' if the human expression was right. While the human's armor was far bulkier than her own skintight environmental suit, it still gave off a good estimation of what her figure was. "Catherine..." She repeated softly, her voice a sultry trill. "Oh, please, call me Tali." She smiled. "Tali is my given birth name. 'Zorrah nar Rayya is my Clan name, and the ship I was born on." She explained as she climbed into the transport pod with her.

The vehicle zipped away, the Mass Effect drive in it making the sudden acceleration unnoticeable. She watched the Presidium slip away behind them, the massive towers of the Citadel blurring by beside them.

"I see. Names in your culture must not get mixed up as often as human names. We only have a unique and a family name, sometimes a second unique name. I don't have one. There's a lot of humans with the name 'John Smith' for example. But I've never seen two wind up in the same room together. I think it's just due to sheer numbers that we can manage to keep each other separated." She chattered idly in the transport, leaning back and taking in Tali visually. She only had two fingers and a thumb on both hands. And two long toes on each foot. Her legs had that sort of backwards bend, like some animals. A modest appearance to her body, but a very shapely and appealing one, if the suit was as tight as it suggested it was.

"What made you want to visit Flux more than anything else?"

"Well, having your entire population confined to such a small area does have its...advantages and disadvantages." She said, "Our families tend to be small - no more than one child is allowed per family. So our family bonds tend to be stronger than most." Tali said absently, recalling memories of the Migrant Fleet. She blinked when she saw Shepard's eyes slide over her form - the human's eyes far easier to follow than her own. She felt her cheeks flush slightly behind her faceplate, the human's eyes giving her more than a perfunctory look over.

"I liked the atmosphere the most." She answered honestly. "The Wards remind me much of home, and the music in Flux is intriguing. I would hopefully like to get a copy for when I return to the Flotilla." She said, watching as the shuttle approached the Wards, dipping lower as it began to settle down.

"I wouldn't know much of family." Shepard had long ago came to terms with her Earthborn lifestyle, not having grown up with parents so much as a small crew that took care of each other. She hooked up with the Alliance as soon as she could to escape the planet. "I had to go without. A lot of families didn't stay together on Earth. We're easily separated. Takes the right kind of people to really be able to stick around."

"I see. So you're into music. I can probably find some of the music in a store for you. I'd just have to talk with the employees to figure out what they're playing. Or rather who made it." She shrugged lightly, unable to help but take one more quick look. She'd look good on the dance floor there. Everything was lit up in neon colors, so her visor would glow in cool colors and the faint light would emphasize the subtle shadows of her body. "So do you like to dance?"

"I am sorry." Tali apologized, even though she knew it was not her fault. "I could not imagine growing up like that...you must have been incredibly strong to grow up like that..." She said somberly, but holding an air of respect for her. Quarian children were always close to their parents and the other families. To not be just seemed...bizarre. She stepped out of the transport pod and followed Shepard to Flux, eager to feel that pulsing beat from up close.

Tali smiled, "You would do that? For me?" Her voice seemed to light up in excitement. "Oh, thank you Shepard. My people are going to love this!" She gushed. Tali smiled softly, "Dancers are highly revered in my culture." She explained, "I am not as experienced as some of those on the fleet, but I do like to dance every now and then." She nodded.
