The island was small, peaceful. They had not seen a fight in almost 13 years, not since the last pirate raid upon their shores.

Laine still remembered that day. She had only been 6 when it happened, but many people on the island lost everything. Not her family. Her father had been lucky, the inn survived. One of the few. She figured that bit of luck was the start in her father's rise from innkeeper to governor.

Yet as she stood at her window looking out to the harbor filled with ships, she wasn't truly happy. She hadn't been happy for 13 years. This life of nobility was not her, as much as she tried to be the picture perfect governor's daughter, she still wished she was down in the inn, serving drinks. She wished she was still with her childhood friend.

Thinking of him would make her smile from time to time. How she missed him. She wondered if he was still alive out there, somewhere. The thoughts of the last time she had seen him turned her smile to a frown. Such a terror filled time that left her scarred inside even to this day.

As she closed her window and went to draw the curtain, she noticed a ship appearing off in the distance. It was still ways off from shore, but something about it... it gave her sudden goosebumps. Something was coming. She could feel it. But she didn't know what.

Drawing the curtains, she took one final look at herself in the mirror before she turned to head out of her room and down the stairs where her father awaited her with yet another stuck up suitor she would be forced to have dinner with and turn down in time.

Stephen was on his boat locked in his cabin. He had spent many many years in this room. On this ship. It took him almost 5 years to become a 'pirate'. His 'father' had spent every day in those 5 years beating his values into him. Now 13 years and a few months later he was coming home. His father had died a year ago giving him control of the ship. 'The Thanisian Breeze' was a fine ship but she had changed much since her last visit to these shores. The many battles she had seen had changed all but a handful of her crew and nearly completely changed the look of her.

Stephen had loaded the 3 pistols that he carried into battle. As well as the custom made pistol that he loved so much. The stock was extended giving it a stock of sorts similar to a rifle. On the under side was an ax head. In battle he would use this pistol in his left hand making him devastating at close range. His sword never left his hip even when he went into town it still hung from his belt. His red shirt and brown pants hung from his body. His shoulder length brown hair was held back by a strip of cloth over his forehead.

Soon his equipment had been prepared and he reached under his shirt. Around his neck hung the only thing he escaped the island with. His mothers locket he took from her neck the day he was taken. He fiddled with it nervously he was not certain how this trip home was going to make him react. He had changed so much in 13 years how could he was he going to handle those memories flooding back.

His first mate knocked on the door and told him that they would be entering port shortly. "Thank you for telling me remember! We are not going to attack this port. Send only the list i gave you ashore to get goods. The rest are restricted to the ship. I don't need a fight in port. " He put the necklace away and began putting his pistols away. 2 on his belt one on each hip. One in his boot and the other tucked into his shirt a few inches above his belt.

Laine was bored out of her mind! This suitor was worse than the last three combined! He was not only a bore to talk to, but he was a fop as well! He was dressed more richly than even herself. That was always a red flag in a man. And the way he would glance at the maids when they would pass with a pitcher of water or to take away a plate, he was a womanizer as well. She could tell. Yes, this one was definitely worse than the last three. Perhaps even the last five. With the meal completed, she was more that ready to bid him farewell forever, but her father stepped in and invited the young man to stay a few days more with them. If looks could kill, Laine's father would have daggers in his face right now.

"Milady," the fop of a man stood and came to her side, "May I ask you to accompany me for a walk in the gardens?"

She'd rather chew her own leg off. "Milord, thank you, but I feel a little weary this evening. Perhaps tomorrow."

"Laine..." her father had a hint of a warning in his voice, but she could not be controlled like that.

"Pardon me, father, Lord..." she struggled a moment to recall his name, "Lord... Dorshire. I believe I should like to retire for the evening. Enjoy you brandy and cigars." With the slightest of bows, she departed the room, returning to her own room. The moment the door was shut, she dropped the prim proper act and just acted like herself. This acting was hard at times! How she hated it. Going to the window, she opened it once again to let the cooling air into her room. She did not look out at first as she went for her hair brush, but when she returned to sit at the window seat, taking her hair down, she catch sight of that ship she had spotted earlier. It was now sitting at the docks. She could see a number of people coming down the gang plank.

There was something about that ship... some reason she could not take her eyes off it. It seemed familiar to her. Eerily so. As if a ship from a dream or... a memory. Or a nightmare...

A sudden flash of the past rang across her sight. A ship on the docks, pirates pouring from it with evil looks in their eyes. Women screaming, blood on the sand, blood on the ground. A boy holding her hand, running through the streets with her. A carpet. A hole. The boy. He was gone. She as trapped in the darkness again. The darkness.

With a gasp, she snapped out of her memories, a light sweat on her skin, her breathing increased. The darkness was coming for her. She could feel it. Rushing to the night stand, she lit a candle. As long as there was light, the darkness could not find her. She lit a second candle... just in case.

Stephen stopped on the docks looking into the town he froze. The town had changed so much but... This angle he shivered slightly thankfully all his men were in front of him. This was the view his 'father' the day he took him. He tried hard not to break out into tears it was hard but he mannaged.

He almost jumped out of his skin. "The inn!" He mumbled under his breath as his men flooded the town buying supplies and preparing for their next tip. He shook his head and walked silently into the inn. He knew she was still inside that in still helping her father. He walked in and walked up to desk."I need to speak with the owner of this tavern. Or his daughter!" He smiled his face lighting up like the candles up the hill locked in a small room.

Out side his men where buying every ounce of gun powder, alcohol and food they could get their hands on. It would not belong before they started looking for flesh. They had been at sea for nearly 3 months. If some of his men where not already trying to find a woman he would be stunned.

The young man at the desk looked at Stephen like he was crazy or something. Perhaps the man was drunk. "The tavern owner or.... HIS daughter?" the lad repeated, looking confused. "You must not be from around here? Perhaps you are thinking of another tavern and inn?" The lad pointed across the room to a sauce wench with her breasts all but hanging out of the top her her dress. "Madame Leota owners this here place. Has for the last 10 years. Ain't got no daughter either. You drunk or something?"

((PLEASE bear with me tonight. I am having MAJOR connection issues with my computer. I am here, but I'm gonna appear to be coming and going almost constantly until I get it fixed. It happens EVERY night between 9 and 11 my time. I don't know what the problem is! It's driving me NUTS!))

He looked at him like he was mad. "Your joking me really? "He walked over to the women the bar man said owned the place. "Excuse me you own this place? "He spoke softly looking at her a confused look on his face. This could not be true where was the girl he remembered! This certainly was not her.

(Take your time with your web. Sorry that one was so short... writers block...)

Leota turned to look at Stephen, a drunken smile on her face. The sun was just starting to set and already the whore was three sheets to the wind. And oh she was a whore. One look was all you needed to tell that. She also could not be the same girl he was looking for. Leota was clearly and older woman. Old enough maybe to even be his mother. "Well 'ello there! Yes, tis my place! Why you askin'? Like the looks of it? The rooms up the stairs are even nicer then this common room! Wanna look see?"

He paused and thought about it for a few long seconds. If he had been in any other port he would have taken her up on that. "Maybe another night. Where is the old owner? Or his daughter? I have been out of town for a long time i miss them. " He looked her up and down again considering delaying his search again before he shook that idea off for good. He would continue his search and allow his men to bed this beauty as he knew they would. She would make a good living tonight."It is rather important i find her. Why did they sell the inn? "

"Ol' owner?" She was a little more that drunk, so it took her a few moments to recall the information he wanted, "I won this place in a gamble from a fella... who bought it from another fella who made a lotta money from the place after the pirates invaded 13 years ago. Now the fella I won it from is dead. One to many debts if ya ask me and a few to many drinks," she laughed as if it was a funny joke of some kind. "And the first fella I never even knew, but if ya ask me he shoulda taken the money he got for the place and gotten outta this 'ell hole." Leota shrugged a little bit, "Don't know if 'ither had a daughter."

Stephen was angry she didn't even get the bar from who he need to find."Who can i find that would know where he went? "He was getting frustrated pacing his hands on the butt's of his pistols as he was trying to avoid getting livid. He was pacing around her before yelling out in the bar. "The man who owned this bar after the pirate attack! I need to find him where is he? "He yelled... not even giving her a chance to respond before he yelled out his question. His eyes scanned the crowd looking for anyone who was going to answer his question.

Everyone around him in the street just looked at Stephen like he was a nut bag. A few of them made comments as they passed him by. Whispering things like, "Drunk" and "Nutbag" under their breath. No one would look at him let alone give him a reply. The only ones paying attention were the few men from his own crew that were nearby. Two of them came to him, "Captain, is something wrong?"

He looked at him and snarled."Get the men back on the ship. Shore leave is canceled for the night. I will let you know if your allowed to get off the ship tomorrow." He snarled if anyone would know where they where it would be the people that owned their old house. Stephen moved quickly threw the town heading to the home of his former love. He knocked heavily on the door not stopping for a moment. Once the door was opened he spoke."13 years ago a man owned this house.... I need to know where he moved when you bought the house! "Stephen had to hurry he had a ship full of sailors who where quickly going to become wild animals if they did not find her fast.

"Wha- What?" Questioned the man that answered the door, giving Stephen the same look everyone else did. They all thought he was nuts. "I didn't even life on this island 13 years ago. I just bought this place last year. Damn drunk!" The man slammed the door in Stephen's face. His last hope was another dead end it seemed.

Stephen pulled his pistol and shot the lock. He kicked open the door and stepped inside. "Who did you buy it from where are they?" He roared grabbing another pistol as he put it away."I am not kidding I need to find the man that owned this house. "He was growing angrier by the moment and he was seriously considering raising the town to get the information he needed. 13 years as a pirate had taken all of his patience and ability to negotiate and thrown it over board.

(What is your characters full name ganna need it soon. Or was it when he last knew it. :D)

The man trembled in fear on the ground, face to face with Stephen's pistol. There was Chaos in the room as the man's wife ran to the cradle, when the man's child was now crying. Mother grabbed the babe and ran to crouch down in the corner, crying herself as she shielded the baby. The man had his hands up, "Not in front of my family. Please. Please not in front of them! I.. I bought it from the town. The last fella couldn't pay his taxes! The Governor took it from him and the town put it up for auction! Please bud! They are all I got!"

Stephen's shoot had stirred up attention now. Attention he wouldn't want. Bystanders were starting to look for an official. He might have pushed his luck a little to far this time.

((Laine Marie Miller... but daddy changed their last name to something more French when they moved up in the world :p He won't find her that way either))

Stephen moved threw the house and went out the back. He knew where to go now. He moved quietly threw the town his trusty ax in his hand just in case someone spotted him. He slipped slowly threw the town moving from building to building dodging as many people as he could. He made it back unmolested to his ship. He roared when he got back onto the ship. "EVERYONE UP NOW!" HE was reloading his pistol as the deck filled with men. "Men I need you to search this town for someone. Laine Marie Miller! She used to be the inn keepers daughters. Grab your gear and get ready we are raiding this town. REMEMBER MY RULES!" He screamed he did not want to have to shoot anyone on this raid. "Remember take anything of value. Check every where you can find. The girl is the most important if you find her no harm comes to her. "He was bellowing on the ship as the men where gathering swords rifles and pistols. "Remember Do not kill women or children! I don't give a damn about the men I will shot you if you break my rule." He only had one rule one born 13 years ago after watching his mother and Laine's mother die in front of him.

He grabbed a rifle and 3 of his best men. They where heading to the governor's mansion high above the town. His pirates poured into the city exactly like they had 13 years ago. As guards where seen they where dispatched almost instantly. Musket and pistol fire filled the air as the small band charged up the hill to the governor's home. Stephen would rest at nothing to find the women he lost so long ago. He had fought for 13 years to get back to her he would not give up now.

Laine was just finishing braiding her long blonde hair for the night when the sounds of firearms and screams filled the air through her open window. Rushing to glance outside as she grabbed for her robe, throwing it on. Leaning out the open window, Laine felt like she was once again thrown back 13 years into the past. The sight was just the same, only this time she saw it from a new vantage point. She saw it all falling apart before her. Glancing down, she spotted a small band heading for the manor, guns in hand. "FATHERS!" she cried out as she shut the window, locking in and running across the room to her night stand, pulling out a pistol of her own to defend herself with. Not wanting to risk anything else, she also pulled out a knife and lifted her night gown, strapping the knife to her thigh.

As she was letting the hem of her dress fall down again, her father burst into the room. "LAINE! Hide!"

"Is it pirates? Papa is it pirates?!"

"I don't know Laine, but you must hide! Quickly... under the bed!" Her father started to push her towards the place he wanted her to hide.

She started to panic, "PAPA! It's dark! I hate the dark you know that!"

"No fighting this Laine! Under the bed! And don't you dare come out until it's all clear! NOW!" Her father shoved her under the bed and the moment she was there, Laine froze in fear. She hated the dark. It bought back to many memories of 13 years ago. Locked in the dark, not knowing what was happening around her. Shutting her eyes tight, she tried to hold onto her sanity. She would need it if they found her.

((If you have not guessed by now... Laine has issues with the dark. And yes, it does involve the attack 13 years ago. Hehe.))

Stephens men made short work of the front gate. They had shot the guards from down the hill. They where taking fire from the guards in the house. There where only a hand full of guards left Stephen and his men charged forwards. One of them taking a bullet in the hip. He did not fall though he continued to charge into the front door. As they bust threw the door carnage insued. Within seconds all the guards that where engaged were either dead or dieing. Stephen had lost 3 of his four men. He turned to the last one and nodded."Get everything you can carry and get back to the ship. We need to be ready to sail when i get back. "He turned heading threw the house.

He began searching for the governor. Or anyone he could ask about his lost love. He searched every room grabbing the occasional item and taking it as he passed. He had one shot left and it was in his ax. His sword was drawn as he entered every room slowly making sure not to get jumped from behind. "Governor If you come out now you will live! I need information not your life!" He was getting closer and closer to the room of the one he was searching for. HE did not know that or he would have been moving much faster.

While Stephen was busy looking for the Govenor, his man was looking for valuables. Coming upon Laine's room was like a gold mine. All her gems in her jewelry box were the jackpot. But then the man realized. All these things that belonged to a lady. Where was the lady? A grin crossed his vile face. He was on the hunt for another prize then. Going to the closet first, he opened it and ripped it apart, but finding nothing. The only other place could be under the bed. And when he got down on the ground, reached under the bed, and found hims hand wrapping around a small, feminine wrist, her smiled wide. Jackpot.

Wanking, Laine was soon out from under the bed and at the pirate's mercy. It took her a few moments for the severity of the situation she was in. "Pretty little poppet!" The pirate said to her as he grasped her breast a moment with his other hand, "Wanna come aboard ship with me?"

With a scream, Laine raised the pistol the pirate did not even notice she had to his face and fired. The pirate did not even know what hit him as she feel dead to the ground at her feet. Laine stood, pistol still in hand, shock on her face... she had just... killed a man...

Stephen heard the shot and came charging up the stairs to her room. He entered quickly expecting to find the governor instead.... He found his man laying on the ground dead. His blood splatered on the woman who was still holding the pistol that shot him. "Put the gun down!" He was not sure if that was the one she had shot or another. He pointed his last pistol at her moving in slowly. He slipped his sword into its scabbard. " You are the governors daughter arnt you? "He smiled grabbing a hand full of jewels stuffing them into his pocket. " Your going to have to come with me. Your father was to scared to come out and talk so i will take you instead."He inched slowly towards her soon standing just inches from her.

Laine was frozen as Stephen came into the room. But one look at the gun pointed at her, and he had her attention. She still held the gun in her hand the whole while he had his pointed at her. Clearly, he didn't know it was useless. She could use that to her advantage. Letting him get close, her eyes never left him, waiting for some kind of plan to come to her head. Something, anything, but nothing did. She was about to drop the gun when movement from the door caught her eye.

Her father appeared, a pistol in his hand, aiming it at Stephen, pulling the trigger as Laine gasped and moved to duck!

Stephen noticed her reacting to something. Turning as the shot went off The shot that would have struck him in the back now hit him in the back side of his arm ripping threw into the wall behind. He screamed in pain and anger and returned fire aiming for the governor's leg. He did not want to kill him he needed his information. As the bullet clipped the mans leg he ran over and tackled him to the ground. "Miller! Where is he? The old inn owner! " He snarled leaning down grabbing the old mans hands. His tackled had driven the pair from the room. He glanced back from time to time to make sure the girl was not going to shoot him in the back. He was not going to make the same mistake his man had.

It seemed the girl was not going to follow, but her father was crying out in pain. The shot hit it's mark, crippling him. The name Stephen was yelling in his face clearly stuck some kind of cord, for the old man's eyes went wide and his jaw dropped slightly. He had think fast. This man clearly had some kind of grudge against him. Thankfully he didn't know that HE was Miller. It was time to cover, "Miller left the island. Moved back to France. 9 years ago."

A woman's scream, almost like a battle cry, rang through the air. A heartbeat later, Laine was on his back, a knife in her hand risen high, about to be plunged into his back. The girl about to kill him, was the very one he was looking for and he didn't even know it. "Pirate scum!" she cried out.

Stephen heard her scream and jumped out of the way. Before she began her attack. He winched as his arm hit the wall. "Governor your daughter is going to get you killed!" He put his ax away quickly drawing his sword."Governor I am going to take your daughter with me. If when i find Miller then i will free her to come home. If i don't you will never see her again. "He lunged forward pointing his sword at her. He moved slowly his free hand reaching up."Put the knife down or i will kill you both!" He needed to end this quickly he could not afford to be on this island much longer. It was only a matter of time before there was some form of a counter attack. He was already going to having enough trouble control his ship as the youngest member of the crew. "If you put it down now and come with me. I will make certain you my men are kept away from you. If i have to take you by force... I will put you in the brig and there is no telling what may happen to you below decks. "

Her knife was still raised in his direction, "Miller?" Laine of course knew the name. It was her name. "You're-" before she could say any more, a loud blast of cannon broke the air. I was loud and shocked her, her knife dropping from her hand as she moved her hands to cover her ears. The whole manor seemed to quake and she stumbled... right into his grasp. The cannon fire came from his own ship. Someone on board his ship was getting a little trigger happy. The town was on fire. People were dead in the streets. The raid was going to far. Laine could see that. "End this raid and I will go with you!" she spoke quickly. "These people suffered enough when you bastard's attacked 13 years ago." And she did mean THEM. "I know it is the same ship. I'd never forget it."

((Net issues again. It's the phone lines in this area I came to find out. Happens when it rains. And it's been raining ALL day. I hope it will fix itself in an hour or two when there are less people on the phone lines like it did last night and the night before. Bear with me again >.<))
