Aureus clinked. Single coin moved between elegant fingers of a man who observed this marvelous little bauble that moved the world. It was trapped but safe in hands of a man who knew exactly how much it is worth. Fingertips moved over the intricate engraving that determined value of this precious metal. Twenty five denarii... monthly pay of a legionnaire and with few more to spare. Twelve bags of wheat, fifty amphora of good wine. Smile appeared on Lucius' face, but it was not this marvelous little coin that achieved this. No, it was something else, something much more amusing.
"As you know..." Man stood up, addressing his peers. Years were catching up to him. Once brown hair became gray and clean cheeks were covered in just as gray beard. In Lucius' eyes, this man was always a traditionalist, a product of bygone age lingering in hallowed hall of Senate not for his wealth or prowess... but wisdom that was quickly being washed away with each year's first snow. You are getting old Tullus, Lucius thought and Senator continued his speech "... construction is already eight months behind. Deadline was crossed two times already. There are whispers among citizens that will of gods prevents us from finishing the temple. Some say, even, that Rome is falling out of its grace.
No Tullus. Gods did nothing to stay your hand Lucius mused to himself, leaning his chin against fingers. Coin. That's what you are lacking to finish this and coffers are light. Lucius was not wrong in this assumption of his. Though Republic expanded more int he last decade, it did nothing to change economic position that Rome was in. They funded four campaigns, four swords to strike at the heart of barbaric tribes that still plundered northern borders. It was a success, resounding one too but what they did not expect was that they tried to squeeze water out of dry wood. Legions were not free. Each legionnaire needed to be fed and clothed, they needed to be trained and paid and every time they marched back through the gates a triumph had to be held... It was not will of Tullus, no this was will of Senate. You emptied coffers... how will you explain this to -them-?
"We have already prolonged this for too long." Another consul rose from his seat "Delaying once more will show that Senate is not capable of reason, that we order without care if we can pay for it. Romans will not forget that."
"Then perhaps..." Tullus continued after clearing his throat "A tax increase is in order."
No, you won't raise another tax, Tullus. Another thought rushed through his mind and much to his expectation, other consuls responded with mumbling among themselves. Few rose to openly defy this idea. You would not dare touch into pockets of citizens so soon after previous tax increase. That would be your political suicide. You know this... you know that as soon as you so much as tilt your head to the side, wolves will reach for it... and they will replace you with someone younger, someone they can control. Aureus danced among his fingertips. This plan of theirs, this construction of temple dedicated to Mars has already been modified three times, each time adding more to it, each time increasing its size and splendor. It was firm belief among citizens and consuls alike that this might appease god of war and grant them swift and decisive victory in upcoming conflicts. But each extension added more to the cost and every time it stopped. For months at a time just so city could bring marble from the provinces... an expensive commodity when used in such grand projects. Lucius let out a gentle snort, barely audible but impossible to contain. He knew this dance, he recognized it...
"If not taxes..." another man rose, younger and with more strength in his body and mind. "Then we shall ask for public funding." Another set of mumbling occurred, heads turned from left to right to see what the other person has to say about it. Public funding? You mean, you would ask wealthy patricians to fund the rest? But whom will you ask? "There are many who would see this as honor to be bestowed upon their house and a public proclamation shall be done to honor their name!"
Heads now nodded, many did. It was a good idea. Senate would add a small bronze plaque somewhere at the very bottom of the pillar to 'honor' the name of benefactors who ensured this grand edifice's success... and Rome would not need to pay a single as any more. However, it was a double-edged sword for whoever was to cut open his coinpurse will more than likely attain great popularity among population, and they would ride this 'glory' for months if not years to come. It was not uncommon for few consuls to be replaced during those times. Appius, the orchestrator of this idea, knew this well. His seat was safe, his future clear... though there were those who sat on opposite end who were not so lucky. He counted on it. You cunning bastard.
"Whom shall we ask?" A voice raised a question. Appius stood still for few moments and Lucius chuckled. He wondered whom will Appius look toward. Will you look toward Scipia? Mars is one they pray to, surely they would jump to this chance to gain favor of god who guides their swords on the field of battle. No, they won't stand up, their coffers will bleed dry and vultures will tear them apart. Will you ask Iulia? Lucius' eyes now jumped on the opposite side where entire row of men sat in silence. If there was ever a House Lucius was weary of, it was House Iulia. Their influence was strong, their informants skilled. Nothing could ever be whispered on streets without them finding out. But they won't do it either... Like Scipia, their power did not lie in coin. I know whom you are waiting.
Appius waited, patiently. He waited for Lucius to rise to stand up for he knew his house can pay for this construction without so much as a scratch on their wealth. But Lucius did not stood up. He knew that if he did, Appius will refuse him... If Lucius asks again then it will paint him as a desperate man who tosses coins. They will take coins but it will then look as if Senate is doing house Aurelia a favor, and in politics, favors were powerful tools. Appius waited and so did Lucius. When it was more than apparent that he would not stand up, young man now turned.
"Perhaps House Au-"
"No." Lucius interrupted him, pocketing his coin. He still refused to stand up "I have no intention to fund this temple. House Aurelia has paid for damages that Forum suffered not too long ago... Temple of Mars is not what I will fund when statues in my home are dedicated to another."
"The wealth of your house, honored consul Alba, is-"
"Not concern of anyone present here." Lucius bellowed. His posture leaned forward and in single movement he stood up. It was as if age refused to catch up with his body which moved as if he was barely eighteen years. Vigor followed his every step that led him to the center and his cold, piercing eyes gazed into those of young man "My house prospered because I do not frivolously toss coins every time someone barks my name. Proclaim another extension of deadline."
"The people of Rome..." Appiues spoke, tone softer, defeated by presence of man who outgrew him for almost entire head in height.
"When first revision of construction plan was done, do you remember who voted against it? If you have trouble remembering, I will be more than glad to remind you." He took another step forward. It would be unheard of to dare lay a hand on another Consul within hallowed grounds of Senate but Lucius never intended to even touch young man. With just two meters between them, their height difference was all too apparent. "Me." Lucius said with soft tone "I voted against revision every time it was discussed but each time you spoke of divine favor and our duty to the gods. Why must I pay for your failed plans? Go tell them." He nodded with head toward exit "Tell them you can't finish what you started."
The beast was wounded, its pride beaten into the ground... all it needed now is one more blow, a decisive strike to ensure its defeat. Lucius took a few steps toward the exit, followed by another round of incoherent mumbling of others. Just as it was certain that he would abandon this argue, he turned on his heels and looked toward the gathering. His expression was stern, his eyes determined to not let this little exchange unanswered. The final blow.
"I am not a heartless man." Smile widened on his lips "I will send coins and ensure that final phase of construction is finished without any further delay." His words echoed in dead-silent hall "After all, we do not want citizens to believe gods have abandoned them just because of few... miscalculations." Eyes connected to that of Appius, certain that young man would understand it was he who was labeled as 'miscalculation'. "We will finish the construction and ensure that rumors of this put to rest. I am sure Senate won't mind my sudden outburst of boldness. Will it?"
The question was rendered moot. Lucius left the Senate and with quickened steps made way toward his villa. Four guards followed him at all times, armed and trained, looking more like pack of rabid dogs ready to be unleashed... for the pay they received, they were more than content to play obedient puppy and a bloodthirsty hound. Their pockets were never empty and their loyalty without question. Unlike his guards, Lucius did not hide obvious joy that rushed though his body... Not only will he himself be there when final white marble slab is placed in the temple, but it will be done in such a way to ensure every Roman hears of his 'most generous' donation. Senate will preserve its dignity and credibility and they will not dare send so much as an glance toward Lucius. Granted, this will not ensure more seats in Senate for House Aurelia... he will still be way too far from succeeding in any plans for final word within it. After all, he never wanted to crown himself an Imperator... but then again, neither will rest of the Senate. They hatred toward that very word was enough to ensure no single man will ever rise to such power to control every aspect of roman life. For the moment, his future is secure and his treasure well within his grasp. The most valued of them all...
"My lord..." Servant lowered head in respect for master of the house as soon as he entered. He was given the honorary toga that Lucius had to wear within the walls of the Senate. Instead of pure white linen, purple cloth with gold embroidered edges now adorned his still fit body.
"Where is my daughter?" Lucius asked, still brimming with joy. In the sea of corruption and shameless ambition, Lucia was his beacon of hope and pride... one he would never allow to be blemished.

Lucretius had been spending the day at the brothel, most of it alone in his private office, a small room with a desk, a simple bed, and little else. While it was not unheard of for him to sleep there, he rarely made a habit of it. However, there were times, like now, when he was in no hurry to see his elder brother, or anyone else who was neither customer nor girl, and he strongly suspected today was one of those occasions. Besides, before he left the office today and risked being spotted by family or a senator or any priests, he would need to have his ledgers updated.

He hadn't known of his brother's recent interactions within the senate, though he did know that the delays on the temple were becoming a bit too noticeable of late, and that murmurings about those delays were becoming quite loud. When a major project ran behind, the Senate looked for money to speed it up (or, if it were really behind, to distract the population). When the senate needed money, House Aurelia was approached. When that happened, whether coin was spent or not, the finances needed to be accounted for. And with his brothel being the largest single source of both income and expenses (not counting his brother's acts of "kindness"), having the books of his business pristine was of particular importance.

Personally, Lucretius thought the use of family coin for the Temple of Mars was a waste. Soldiers would likely spend more coin on earthly delights if they felt they had lost the favor of the gods, so he stood to make plenty of money by the temple remaining incomplete. Of course, with it complete, soldiers might want to celebrate. Either way, the coin was there, so why throw it away?

Such thoughts, he figured, were why Lucius was better-suited to be the head of the family. Favors were a fuzzy thing, too arbitrary. He preferred hard coin. Still, he had work to do. He walked outside and caught the attention of one of the many guards. "Have Camilla and a bottle of wine brought in. It will be a long day."

Cadmus stood outside the house of Senator Lucius Aurelius Alba waiting to be called in for his appointment. It was his first since coming to the city, and he hoped it woudl be his last, or at least a very good start to his search for new employment. He had left his life of soldiering behind in Asia and hoped to find work more suiting to his age and his temperaments than being a guide and mercenary for the legions, hopefully he woudl soon find some comfortable employment with one of the well named families of this city and this empire. he had the right credentials, they were from a roman general turned governor as well as another which was more a petition and signed by a collection of soldiers and centurions he had served with before leaving and they had sent there best to the old Greek when he left them for Rome, all in all that letter had seventeen names on it. It was of relatively little value by itself, but it was a vote of confidence that, when taken with his letter of Introduction from General Halian Aggrepua Gero who he had served under for years and who himself had served with distinction, could secure his employment.
He had dressed himself up as a fine old solider for this meeting, which he was, because despite not being a young man, he was still firm of limb and still looked the part better than many a Roman. His armor was polished, until it shone like new, he wore a gold hilted dagger on his belt, won in a battle in Anatolia. he had his greying salt and pepper hair, still a deep black where it was so, cut to the roman style and his face was cleanly shaven. It still cut a not unattractive face he thought, that same face that he was told was the face all merchants should have, mildly attractive but only enough to make him more likeable, and smiled with a natural friendliness that made it look like he wasn't trying to cheat you any more than was a good merchants due. He wore a few scars, worse off all was running along the line of his neck and should have killed him. It was a ragged scar that went from one side of his jaw to the other where his throat had been slit, and only divine intervention and the work of a good Persian doctor, he was sure, had saved him. There were one or two small scars on his face but that was otherwise unblemished, if he had not had his face shaven clean all these marks would be invisible. Looking at his grey eyed reflection staring back at him in a puddle he put on a smile and reminded himself, you sell yourself as much as your product, especially when selling your services. If the customer liked you, than they woudl like what you were selling. The servant came back and he stood up straight, he was slightly taller than the man, who hopefully was no taller than his master, and waited with outward patience but inward impatience for a word.

"I am here Pappa." Lucia cried as she practically threw herself into her father's arms, full young breasts pressing against his still firm chest. Though she was no longer a little girl, she was the youngest and was more than happy to indulge her father to ensure his affections. He was a busy man and she did not have to play little girl for long and it seemed a small price to pay for all she received in return. Despite the limits placed on women in Roman society, Lucia was an ambitious girl, eager to learn and . She didn't really see it all as unfair, it was after all just the way things were, she also knew that she was far from helpless when it came to her influence upon the male gender.

She could tell from her father's mood that he had done something spectacular for Rome today. "So Pappa, what did you buy Rome today?" She asked, hoping he would share his latest scheme with her, though that was never assured. She knew well enough though that her father's coins always came with some sort of price. She wondered if someday she would need to pay such a price? She was blood after all, and Pappa always seemed to value blood over anything else. "Would you like to play a game Pappa?" She asked, wanting to spend more time with him, increasing the odds he would tell her his latest plans.

"Oh, I almost forgot!" She said excitedly, there is a man here to see you. "A mercenary from the looks of his credentials", she walked gracefully over to the table where the letter of introduction lay. She brought the letter which she was certain would attract her father's notice and approval. "Remember Pappa, you promised to hire a guard for me so I can roam the city and learn?" She kept her voice soft and calm, as if simply reminding him of a minor over site, not her most desperate desire. She was eager to reach out on her own, there was so much to learn and to experience, but she needed an escort. "Perhaps he would be suitable?" She tried to keep her voice passive but wasn't completely successful. She hoped he would let her stay for the audience, she doubted he would be much to look at, but he might mean more freedom for her.

It seemed as if the worries of the world and weight of heavens were lifted sooner than a single grain of sand could fall through hourglass. Tension and malicious thoughts were replaced by those of simple joy of someone whom Lucius held in highest regard. Bright smile emerged on his lips as he felt her warmth and voice, so innocent and gentle. She was always curious little devil and he always sated her curiosity in one way or another. Never before was a girl born in Rome who would have anything that she desired. Slave, horse, jewelry of gold and silver, finest silk from lands far away beyond horizon. Even estate would not be denied, constructed from finest white marble and statues carved by most skillful of hands... all she ever needed to do is ask.
Lucius leaned down and placed a soft kiss upon his daughter's forehead, just to confirm his unwavering affection. "Just some finishing touches on temple." He answered. It was not a trivial thing, despite his appearance before his peers at Senate. Amount was substantial, nothing that would burn a hole through Lucius' purse but not something he was keen on giving so freely. He wished not to put Lucia in state of worry "I want you to remember something, my little flower." He made a small pause and placed arm over her shoulder, hand lightly cupped her shoulder as he led her further into estate "The world is often pushed by people who always need something from someone else. To get it, they will not fret to reach for even the most dire of means." Lucius maintained his smile, speaking words as vaguely as possible as he knew that this lesson cannot be applied for just one situation. It was to be a philosophy to guide through life in Rome "When it comes a time for you to deal with such people, trick is to always be object of jealousy and more importantly... to make them understand that you, my little rose, are irreplaceable."
It was a philosophy he himself practiced, often. Rome needed ambitious people, daring and vicious and Lucius was all of the mentioned and much more. But, even he had those who cannot be replaced by any means... and she was standing right next to him. To protect her, to make her not be object of bargain and ultimatums, he went to great lengths, showing face that he'd never dare show before Lucia... it was a bloodied face, cold, filled with silent ire. Merciless. He never told her that when she was but seven winters old, there was a man who dared to mention her in threat aimed at Lucius. He never told her that man's guards were slaughtered and he himself was dragged into Rome's sewers.... He will never tell Lucia, how he stared into man, tied onto chair with rancid cloth stuffed into mouth, trying to scream and failing... how could he? How could he scream with long slice under his neck, drowning in his own blood with Lucius standing before him. Woe be to all who dare let a single tear fall down her cheek.
"A game?" He changed tone. It was elated, curious. "Well, I do not see why not? Perhaps this time I can win hm?" A soft chuckle escaped as he led her into main hall. Servants were always busy maintaining it, always busy making sure there is not a speck of dust left on the smooth marble surfaces "How about we see this man first? It would be rude to leave him waiting for so long." Truth be told, he was not bothered by it. Not one bit. This man, whoever he is, was not the first and won't be the last coming with such proposition... but then again, not every man is same... and he would sleep more soundly knowing that Lucia is protected, with life if needed.
"Cassus!" Lucius bellowed as he sat down on wooden couch with cushion on top "Must my throat remain dry all day?! Bring wine for me and my daughter." Small table before always had fruit on it, fresh, handpicked by servants from only finest of stock available at markets. For guests, dear and unwanted, Lucius always presented the splendor of his house and wealth that stood behind him. This will not be an exception.

Lucia enjoyed few things more than being adored by others and no one did it as well as her Pappa. While she had no idea how ruthless he could be in protecting her, she was well aware of the many gifts he lavished upon his youngest daughter. She strove to be the apple of his eye, both out of genuine affection for him as well as her own self interest. He would always be the man by which she judged all others and would deny him nothing in return. Julia's soft hand caressed her father's chest as he delivered his lesson, she knew it was meant to be general but she always wanted to know more details. "And who Pappa, are you being irreplaceable to today?" She loved to be in the know, anxious to have an opportunity to pull some of the levers of power that her father manipulated with such skill and apparent ease.

"After all you've taught me Pappa, do you really think I could let you win?" She smiled coyly, excited to spend more time with her father. "Yes Pappa, can I interview him as well? I'd like to make sure I can trust him." She was sure her Pappa would be proud of her for wanting to be involved and approve but still it was polite to ask him. She eyed the man carefully as he was presented, waiting her turn as she let her father take the lead on the interview. Lucia had always appreciated older men, she found their experience and lines quite attractive and this man certainly didn't disappoint on that respect. When it was her turn she questioned him on his travels, his languages, and what weapons he carried, how he would keep her safe. She watched the mercenary carefully but her eyes always returned to her father, as if seeking his approval at each turn. She had a bright mind but lacked confidence in herself, at least while in her father's shadow.

Once invite in he came in with a flourish and deep bow and a glimmer of the sunlight off of his armor before he rose and presented his credentials to the Senator, his letter of introduction from the governor, a shining introduction that testified to his character and his wit while in service to the man, and then the petition from the men he had served with, which went on to testify to his experiences as solider and guide.
"Senator, I am honored to make the acquiescence of you and your daughter. As my records make testament to I have come far, and once I came to this city I made a point of finding the best man of Rome to offer my skills to. I am but a humble solider but I have traveled far since leaving my home in Greece and I know many people, and many types of people from across the empire, I know the trades and wares from just as far and father and I know how to bargain for them almost as well as I know the use of a sword or a bow." Standing in the center of the floor he made that honest merchants smile at both the Senator and his daughter and waited for question from either of them, or a decision.

Slave Market

Kaya knelt in the small alcove where she was displayed, wishing to appear small and unnoticed. This was difficult as the entire purpose of her small alcove was to display the wares of the slavers which she had the unfortunate lot of being at that moment in her life. Her hands were bound together before her, giving her the general appearance of being at prayer which her kneeling only reinforced. The bindings were themselves attached to a longer length of cord which reached to the ceiling, it allowed any one interested in pulling her to her feet, hands above her head for a thorough inspection. Kaya had already had several such 'inspections' which she found terrifying and humiliating. How could such an advanced people be so barbaric in the treatment of other human beings? She had asked herself that question many times in the long weeks since she had been forced from her home in Nubia. Her father she was certain had been slain, he had stayed to stop the advancing horde of these Romans and obviously failed. She had wept for him and cursed these Romans though she now had to fear for what was to become of her. She had marveled at the wonders of Rome, under other circumstances, this would have been an amazing adventure but now it was simply a terror that she desperately wished were just a nightmare. She was a proud woman but she felt as if her sanity hung by the slenderest of threads. She huddled down, trying to appear even smaller as she heard teh approach of another. Would this one be cruel or simply curious, she had yet to find a potential buyer that appeared at all kind and had given up hope there was such a thing. For all their advanced society these people to her were savages, savages in fine clothing but savages none the less.

House Aurelia

Lucia watched as the visitor presented his credentials to her father. It was not at all uncommon for visitors to petition her father, usually looking for money. This one seemed different though and Lucia's ears perked up as she realized he was a Greek. A well traveled Greek at that she found both of interest to her. She smiled at his flattery of her father, she liked the fact that his reputation made him one to be sought out. She took her father's pause as her signal to take some initiative in the interview which she decided to act upon after a brief pause to be sure she wasn't interrupting her powerful father. She approached the older man with her well practiced poise, standing straight, shoulders back, enhancing both her bust and her grace being blessed with ample quantities of each. She watched his face, his eyes especially to see if they wandered. "Father has promised me a guardian, how will you convince my father I will be safe under your watch?" She asked him, getting to the crux of the matter quickly even as her eyes danced across his features. Lucia had always been fascinated with educated and experienced men and while no man could match her father, she found this Greek quite interesting. While trade bored her somewhat, she knew that it was the source of her family's wealth and therefore power. She could learn much from this man and more importantly gain more freedom to move about the City and nearby provinces. As she talked and listened she slowly circled the visitor, sizing him up as if he were a purchase of a sorts. He was a free man, not a slave, but still he wanted a job, he had a price. He wasn't unattractive though he appeared to have had a hard life. Still like many Romans, despite their military and technological dominance of their Eastern neighbors, there was always some sense of awe at their intellectual pedigree. He could be both teacher and bodyguard, and who knew what else? "Would you have trouble serving a gir....a woman?" She was trying to act older than her 18 years but at times her girlish enthusiasm shone through. Her face blushed slightly at her small slip of tongue but she tried to keep her voice steady then waited for his answers.

He noticed the girl approaching him and turned his eyes to her. It was his instincts as a trader and his soldiers discipline that served him here, he new better than to let his eyes wonder and he forced himself to keep focus on her father for the moment while she spoke. He smiled warmly at her and then answered her question. "What assurances can a humble solider give, when any good father might not consider an entire legion enough for his daughter. I am but a humble solider. I have traveled far and seen many things, but I have yet to discover the secret to immortality, so the only assurance I can give is my own life. My word is my bond after all, and by all the Gods I can promise that I would give up my own life before failing in my duties, and if I should ever fail then may all the Gods from here to Baghdad come for my head." He bowed his head to the Senator and then listened to her next question attentively. He let out a jovial, exaggerated laugh at the question, to make a point at how trivial it was to him. "I was once a guard on the Caravans of a merchant queen of Anatolia. and several times I have had the pleasure of being Bodyguard to Persian Princes daughter, or an Arab traders wife. And in my adventures in those journeys, never was my conduct called into question towards them. I served at their beckon call because that was my employ."

House Aurelia

Lucia smiled at Cadmus' assertion that her father wouldn't consider an entire legion to be suitable protection. She had made that protest at least once while trying to get her father to allow her more freedom about the city. She couldn't help but think that his pledge of his life would please her father. After all, it took more than spear points to keep someone like Lucia safe, she needed someone who could read the situation and know when to leave. She was confident he was just that kind of man and able to speak with enough authority to keep the other guards pointed in the right direction. There were always young guards to be hired, but despite their wealth, House Aerelius had little military expertise at its disposal. This man seemed as if he might fill that void quite well.

While Cadmus was wise not to let his eyes wander, it peeved Lucia somewhat to not have his eyes roaming her young body. She took it almost as a challenge, a desire to tempt the older man. Of course had he take such a liberty, Lucia would have dismissed him immediately and gods only knew what her father might have done. Having completed a circle about him as she had asked her question she closed the small distance between them, close enough to rest a soft hand upon his chest. That hand felt the firmness of his body then slid up and out to his shoulder, as if attempting to assess his strength. It was perhaps more of a caress than might seem appropriate but she did have her back to her father, her soft eyes capturing that of the applicant. She was pleased he could take orders from a woman, she wondered just how far she could push this man.

She smiled and nodded her head after holding his gaze a short moment, as if making up her mind. She turned completely around, now facing her father. "I think we should hire him father." She said, her voice as business like as she could manage. "Perhaps a trial run to visit uncle Lucretius, that should be safe enough." She offered, hoping her father would agree. As opulant as house Aurelius was, she was eager to escape its confinement for a time. "Please Daddy?" She offered a hint of his little girl, hoping it would bring him into agreement.

Truth be told, Lucius had hard time trusting anyone with so much a bag of coins, let alone to look after his daughter. Mercenary... that's all he was in Lucius' eyes, a sell-sword offering to spill blood for one with deepest purse. Lucius' purse was plenty deep but the idea of man whose loyalty is defined only by weight of his belt did not sit well with him. He felt the scorch upon his skin before, the bitter sting of betrayal motivated by the cruelty of coin and its power. With such boasting, one could easily deduce that man's skill exceeds the need... but it was still just that - boasting. This is not Greece or Persia, this is not the wilderness of endless steppes that stretch across Asia... No. This is Rome. The center of the world, beating heart of civilization to which all roads lead to... this city is far more dangerous, for a wolf only ever follows his instinct and its nature, while humans have always been and always will be unpredictable creatures.

Lucius' eyes briefly glanced toward Lucia as she circled around Cadmus. She was taught well... the subtle game of seduction and temptation that any great woman must possess and while he was on the brink of ire to see a stranger be within arm's distance of her, he controlled his temper quite well. Next gaze was shot directly at Cadmus, cold and piercing, one who is not as skilled in sword and shield but whose will is tougher than steel. It was to show the clear difference, to make man understand word of Lucius Aurelius Alba is law in this house. After all... he'll be paying him directly out of his pocket.

Soft grin crept up on his lips. No. He could not deny Lucia's eager wish. Slowly, he stroked his lower lip with index finger, pondering on this situation. He'd rather see a Legion trail Lucia closely behind but with it even more problems would arise... Perhaps just one man is needed. He rose other hand and beckoned with finger... within moments Cassus, loyal servant of House, appeared by Lucius' side. Hushed words were spoken to him, keeping eyes glued to Cadmus at all times. With swift steps, Cassus left the room, obeying instructions given by master. "Trial run. I do not hate that idea." Bitter-sweet words of mixed content and contempt echoed in the marble halls. Servant returned, offering to his master a well-woven leather purse. Light clinking sounds were heard as Lucius carefully inspected content and only after he was entirely satisfied with it, Cassus brought it to a carved-wooden table and placed, right in front of Cadmus.

"Fifty denarii." Lucius spoke with clear, loud tone. The amount of coins was as stated, more than months pay of legionnaire - quite a bit more actually "You'll find that I am generous to those who earn my trust... even more so if my daughter's well being is in the question. Prove that you are all you said and this..." he pointed with finger to the bag "Will be not be the last you see."

"Of course..." He started again after a brief moment of silence, enough to give Cadmus time to check for the bag "There are some rules, which I am sure you will understand. First... my daughter's safety must remain unquestionable. Should someone dare to so much as touch her without her permission... I want him to only have his fingers in dearest of memory. I believe I need not clarify what must happen if more would to occur. Keep in mind she is rather... mischievous." He said with a chuckle as he looked briefly over Lucia "And of course after me, her word is law."

"Lastly..." His fingers moved over his brows, observing a faint mist of sweat that was about to bathe his forehead. Day was long and he needed rest "... and let's not ruin this good start of professional relationship... my trust extends as far as your loyalty does. As soon as later ends... so does former. Crucifictions are common occurence nowadays. Now..." Lucius stood up from the couch, offering Cadmus brief but well-meant smile "Have yourself settled. You shall need energy if you are to shadow Lucia. As for me, I am in deep need of a bath and I believe I promised my daughter a round of game after."

As Lucius walked toward bath within the villa, he removed one piece of clothing after another, giving them to slave girl that followed him closely. For a man his age, he was still in excellent shape, well toned body with few scars to remind him of lessons that he must never forget. Come tomorrow, the entire cycle shall start again but for today, he is content to rest his mind. Pool was large, just a bit smaller than some public baths. Entire staff of the House could fit in without any trouble... expensive luxury but one he never once regretted. Water was warm, refreshing and he sat down on the steps, allowing tension to slowly drain out from his pores.

House Aurelia

Lucia was so excited by her father's consent that once more she rushed to him and pressed her full body against his in a warm embrace. She kissed his cheek and neck like the excited little girl she was at that moment. When she was done and her father had turned to relax in his bath she did her best to slip back into a more mature pose and walked elegantly towards her new body guard. "Well it seems you have met with father's approval. Please be ready to escort me to see my uncle within the hour, I shall call for you when I am finished entertaining Dad...my father." She turned and walked away, leaving Cadmus with a servant that would get him settled within the household staff. As she headed towards her father she sent another servant to get their special gaming table, the one that would float within the warm waters of the bath.

As the last of the servants left the bath, Lucia unclipped one then the other clasp that held her soft clothing in place. The silky cloth seemed to caress the curves of her young body as slipped silently to the tile floor. Without a hint of modesty she walked naked to the bath and slowly entered the water. Her breasts were full with dark nipples peaking each slightly upturned globe. Her body was slender, a bit skinnier than the Roman ideal but she was often told she would grow into the full hips of her mother soon enough. She guided the small floating game table towards her father with an adoring smile. She sat until she was neck deep in the warm water, her soft full cleavage glistening with wetness as the small waves gave extra life to her soft mounds. "Thank you Daddy." She said as she quickly prepared their game, her smooth leg brushing occasionally against his as the game was now ready.

The first prospective buyer approached the alcove, having been waved through by the guards, immediately followed by a second man hailing from a different family. The two clearly knew each other, however, pausing in front of the first alcove to chat with each other about very close to nothing. Next to them, a half-clothed woman wept quietly in her alcove, which neither man noticed until they'd finished catching up. When it was noticed, the first man simply sneered and shook his head, the second smiling and asking rhetorically "how hard a worker do you think that one is?" The first chuckled mirthlessly.

Then they approached the alcove where Kaya was kneeling. "Well, this is interesting," said the second man. The first man stood in front of her, looking down at her for a moment before pulling her to her feet, looking her in the eyes. He grabbed her chin, tilting it to each side as the second one looked to the overseer and asked "is she part of a package?" When the man answered that she wasn't, the second man seemed all but shocked. "What is it that makes her valuable enough to sell on her own? Is it being of weaker bloodlines, or the fact that she's almost infertile?"

"I doubt she's fertile at all," responded the first man. "Well, true, but that's not entirely a bad thing," his companion shot back, earning him a smile. The first man pulled at her tunic, exposing her breasts, cupping them appraisingly before pinching down hard on her nipple and watching her reaction.

He turned to the overseer. "How's her Greek?" After some shifting around the man responded. "She understands basic concepts."
"So only mostly a barbarian?"
"She will learn."
"Just in time to die of old age."

Smirking, the second man butted in. "Planning on a lot of conversations with her?" "No."

The first man turned back to face Kaya. "Turn around." He twirled his finger to indicate. Once her back was to him, he jerked her tunic to the side and unhooked the chain holding her hands up, then pushed down on her head. "Bend over," he said, keeping a hand on her hip so she didn't lower her whole body. "Now, this part isn't as bad," he said, rubbing his hand over her bare ass, grabbing it and slapping it. The second man watched, and joked to the overseer. "If you can teach her to walk around like that full time, you might get a decent price out of him."

Cadmus did not shift his expression in any telling way until coin was presented, then he inspected the bag. He could tell by the look in the man's eye, the bite, like a cautious old guard dog in his voice, and most importantly, the amount of pay produced without even bargaining, that he was not help with much trust yet. This was where what he knew about being a solider would not serve him, so he had to think back about his lessons on being a merchant, as he looked into the pouch he decided to take a gamble the bag fell and hit the table with a jingle and twack.
"Forgive my offense senator. But I am not a man who accepts pay when pay is not due. Pay me when you pay all of your staff. If I am worth what you offer now than I will be worth more come then. If I am not, well, let it never bee said that Cadmus of Corinth took a coin from anyone that he did fairly get." If nothing else, he woudl come out of this with it being said that he was a man of some class, and not just a man who solid a good story, rather than a good service. He agreed with a legionaries disciplined tone to everything the senator said, and when the servant came he also followed without a word. He would have to send for his things later. Inspecting the room provided for him he decided that would most certainly do, he was hardly picky about those types of things. Now, all he had to do was wait.

Slave Market

Dark intelligent eyes looked up at the two men with a mixture of hope and fear. They didn't seem interested in her eyes, at least as first as she was roughly hoisted up by her bound hands, her body stretched for inspection, leaving her feeling vulnerable once again. She held the man's gaze as he looked at her face, her pride showing a hint of defiance that she couldn't suppress even though it frightened her a little to make these men angry when she was so helpless. Slavery was not unheard of among her people, though her father's tribe did not trade in them. She tried to keep up with the conversation but was unfamiliar with some of the words or meaning of 'package', thinking it was some kind of box or maybe a gift. She was puzzled at the meaning of the word but then there was more. "In...fer...tile?" She asked about the unfamiliar word having never heard it spoken before. She noticed the smile and hint of laughter, she returned the smile hoping it was for her, straight white teeth shone brightly framed by her dark lips.

Her smile quickly faded as her breasts were exposed and fondled. She tolerated it, standing straight and proud, her gaze set dead ahead as if she were looking through the two buyers. She swallowed hard at the indignity but she understood to a certain extent that women's bodies held a certain value in most cultures apparently including this one. She dreaded the thought but she at least understood it. She did not understand the pain so unnecessarily inflicted upon her. She winced slightly, her eyes flashing at the man hurting her and with out warning he earned a knee to his groin.

It was not as solid a blow as she might have liked and almost immediately she feared she had made a dreadful mistake. She was bent over roughly, her bare ass exposed and she winced again at the hard slap but feared much worse was about to happen to her. She had no idea that the guards would limit the amount of 'damage' that could be done to her, at least while she was still for sale. She braced herself for what was to come then pleaded a Greek word she had heard many times already "mercy", though she hadn't seen it have much affect on these Romans so far.

Day has been tiring but far from over. Lucius' worries were forcefully pushed to back of his head, choosing not to concern himself with any matter that would break this small moment of peace. No matter how easy it seemed from the outside, the stress of running wealthy family would've ruined him if it were not for his sheer willpower. There was a time for business and time for rest... Now was the time for rest. With one deep sigh he lowered himself further into water, leaning back against the marble stairs with arms above water, holding him in steady and comfortable position. Hot water in the center of Rome... marvel of Roman engineering separating them from the barbaric tribes that surrounded them. He could already feel the worries of this world being washed away.

Soft sound of rippling water woke him up from brief moment of relaxation, spotting Lucia enter into the large pool... He did not even hear her get inside. With quick motion of finger he dismissed servants, allowing two of them to have their moment of absolute privacy. Eyes wandered, measuring Lucia up and down with soft grin ever-present on his lips. She... amazed him... not only because even by already high standards she was beautiful young woman.... but because just looking at her like this, stark naked before him in all her splendor, she managed to grow up right under his very nose.

"Was there ever a doubt I would deny you what I promised to do so?" He smiled, wider as she carefully arranged board. Soft scent of her skin was strong and her closeness made it hard not to notice her qualities. She was wise to pick this moment and place for her game, knowing fully well he'll be at disadvantage and no doubt demand something in case of her victory. If it was any other man or any other daughter, scolding would've been more proper thing... but Lucius saw this as yet another lesson, one that Lucia learned well... In the end, the safest thing to bet on, are your own attributes, be it strength, wit or body which any Roman man would want to see warm his bed.

"My my... I suppose I am out of luck yet again." Lucius mused as he looked at floating board. He felt Lucia's leg brush against his, demanding even more of his willpower to maintain his 'posture' steady. Every time she did so he glanced up at her, finding impossible to miss presented cleavage, glistening under the light of torches and warm water that bathed it. She was indeed growing to be just like her mother with exception of her wit. That part... she got from Lucius. He responded in kind, moving his foot to lightly brush against her leg as he pondered on his next move. Lucia was undoubtedly good at both picking games and playing them, a luxury man of the house did not have but never refused "And what shall the winner get this time?"

House Aurelia

"You always keep your promises Pappa, but I know how hard it is to watch me grow up." She told him, genuine affection in her voice as she finished preparing the board. She knew she was a distraction but it wasn't really intentional on her part. While he would deny her nothing, the feeling was mutual. She watched his eyes, his reactions to her touches and she almost instinctively put herself on her best display. The water clung to her body, heavy drops falling from each nipple as she straightens up for her father's attention. "You don't need luck Pappa, you never did." She teased him, knowing full well that she would need to play very well to beat him, even with the distraction. As she smiled sheepishly as her father's foot teased her in return, he was not the only one distracted by their intimacy.

"A wager Pappa? She said with excited anticipation. She was enough of her father's daughter to know an opportunity when it presented itself. "I have so much already Pappa." She replied strategically, her mind rapidly considering her options. She had wanted something for a long time but had been waiting for the right opportunity, and she felt now was the time. "What do you want if you win?" She asked, hoping to buy a little time even as her foot found its way to his inner thigh. She came back to her own side of the bet. "I want to build something Pappa, something to put another house in our debt." She really wanted to go to the Senate with him, but knew that was out of the question, something even her father couldn't make happen, but this was how she could break into Roman politics, in her own way with the family's fortune.

***
It was closer to two hours before she finally came to collect Cadmus. She had a certain glow about her that she hadn't before and she simply ignored the fact that she had kept him waiting. "You have everything you need?" She asked, certain that Cassius had made for all preparations required. "I want to go visit my Uncle Lucretius, I think you will like his establishment." She said coyly, not quite explaining exactly that her uncle owned the finest brothel in Rome. Julia loved visiting her uncle, both for his company and the opportunity to learn from some of the sexiest women in Rome. Girls that used their bodies to make a living, a fairly fine living for many of them. Lucia was fortunate to not have to earn money that way, but she envied them their skills and seductions. "Come along." She told the older man, still watching him to see some break in his dispassionate persona. She was still kind of piqued that he seemed able to ignore her feminine charms, he would pay for such coolness eventually.

He was dozing when she came in, but the moment he heard her voice he snapped up and was ready to leave. "Of course miss." He said professionally. When she mentioned his establishment he smiled in a knowing way. "What kind of establishment is that, that I should enjoy it so much?" He had seen many places and many 'establishments. If a young woman was goign there he desided it was some kind of bath house, or a theater, maybe a gymnasium even depending on her tastes. "Tell me Lucia, if I can refer to you by that name, have you ever left Rome? You do not strike me as the kind of girl who is content to simply stroll the streets of one city your entire life." She had to much wonder lust about her. She was the kind who would want to see what else there was even if she had not he was sure.

Wide smile appeared on man's face as he heard his daughter speak. There was no doubt that she was his daughter... the way she spoke, the way she displayed her ambition, her desire - it gave him hope that even after he no longer walks on this Earth, there will be someone who will carry on with same fire and ambition that he has. His brother... man was another story, someone you tolerate due to blood you share but he was yet to prove Lucius he was man worthy enough to carry vast fortune and responsibility that House Aurelia possessed. Lucretius was... entirely different kind of person, ambitions driving him in another direction. Small piece of his mind believed that he will be there for his niece but Lucius would not allow for her to be constantly dependent on another person's whim and goals.

"Worthy goal." He spoke as he once again observed board, still occasionally musing on the soft touch he received. His eyes constantly wandered from board toward Lucia, catching glimpses of her gaze. He cannot groom her to be prisoner of the House forever... perhaps something that could catch her attention "Consul Lurio is young one, eager and ambitious... much like father he succeeded. However, unlike old man Placus, this man has a very nasty habit of contradicting every word I utter and I dare suspect his favor was bought by another House." He moved piece on the board, giving Lucia ample amount of time to ponder on her next move and on his words "He is not a threat at this very moment but I do not want to let it become a risk just because his tongue is faster than his mind. Support of young and ambitious consul from respected family will secure our own position and our own agenda among the Senate."

"If you win... I'll let you obtain his support by any means you deem fit, save only for his life. We do not want his blood on our hands." He concluded his move, waiting for Lucia to make hers. Dangers of Rome were plenty, every Roman knew this, but there was nothing more dangerous, not wolf nor wild men, than man ambitious man. The only thing man of great ambition had to fear, was a woman of equal trait. Lucia will discover soon enough and it will prepare her for the world. In his eyes, she was still pure, still innocent and gentle. If she was to obtain goals using her own with and 'tools'... he needed to ensure she is not caught by surprise... or else she'll be devoured by wolves that prowl streets of Rome. "But before you do so, there is just one more lesson I need to teach you." He leaned back once more against the steps of his bath, watching her with calm gaze and lips curved upward. His hand extended upward from water, offering it to her "Come."

House Aurelia

Lucia received some small sense of satisfaction as the dozing, older soldier snapped to alertness at her call. She paused to answer his question, wanting to see how he reacted to their destination. "My uncle runs the finest brothel in all of Rome." She said with a hint of pride and amusement in her voice. She had to admit that he was somewhat difficult to read, though perhaps there just wasn't much going on between his ears. Of course that thought made her wonder what he might have going on between his thighs. He was so different from her father, whom she felt she could read quite well, obviously she needed more experience with such things.

As he called her by name she decided to remind him of his place. "That sounds a bit too intimate, though perhaps you will grow into it." She said as her eyes trailed down along his body as if imagining just how intimate they might become. She thought of telling him to call her Miss Lucia but the second part of his question had her feeling small and insignificant. She hated feeling that way so with a little wicked grin she decided to say "you may call me Mistress Aurelia." She used her most supercilious tone and hoped he didn't laugh in her face as she was just a young girl and he was such a seasoned veteran.

She wanted to ignore his question about her travels. She didn't want to admit that she had barely even seen much of Rome, let alone the rest of the world. While Rome was an empire spanning the known world, Lucia's world was largely contained by the walls of her father's estate. She tried to remember if she had ever gone anywhere without her father but she couldn't think of an example. This was something of an adventure for her, even if it was just to her uncle's brothel, somewhere her father despised her going which might have been why she wanted to go. Cadmus was certainly able to read her, she was not at all content, and it bothered her to realize that fact, even more so to have it pointed out by a servant.

When he saw that he had hit a nerve he nodded his ascent deferentially. "Of course Mistress." it was actually very cute, all her teasing and attempts to be seductive. She was a beautiful girl but she was hardly the first to try and seduce him, even if she was probably one of the best looking. Never the less, no matter how tempting she might have been, he knew better than to mix pleasure with this particular business, especially considering the less than warm welcome her father extended. As a young man, he had done stupid things for beautiful girls, but neither the young him nor the old woudl risk loosing his head just to get between a girls legs. Besides, she was young, and would do better to get mixed up in young men she might have something with. He could show her a few things he was sure, but he would just be a phase for her.
He noticed the change in her mood when he mentioned travel. Based on the change in her face he could tell he had hit on some of her hopes and dreams, but unfulfilled ones, he made note of that, then he changed the subject. It was no good to linger on depressing subjects. "So, we are going to a brothel. I have to say that was the last place he would have expected, even if it is run by your uncle. what would ever draw you to such a place as that?" He said it with a smirk on a lips and a smile in his eyes that told her he wasn't thinking anything less of her for it, in fact he found it to be something interesting about the girl. But why they were going to a brothel, he assumed this particular establishment was certainly no whore house if the brother of a Senator was it's proprietor. Even still, it was an interesting thing.

Departing House Aurelia

Lucia was grateful that Cadmus didn't press his point any further, he had tact whether she fully appreciated it as deliberate on his part or just a coincidence. Still her young face blushed red a bit at her realization that she still had very much to learn. She was grateful for the change of subject which fed into her excitement of getting out of the confines of the villa. Even though she was still a little piqued about his coolness towards her physically, she couldn't help but return a smile as he questioned her about their destination. "Well I do have a great deal to learn about a great many things Cadmus, and since you are seem...limited as a teacher in certain subjects, I must learn them somewhere." She found it rather entertaining to dance around the subject of seduction and sex with him. She also liked the idea that she was at least somewhat capable of surprising him.

Arriving at Lucretius' Brothel

The trip from House Aurelia to her uncle's was rather short and uneventful. Lucia had declined to use her regular sedan chair, wanting instead to be able to enjoy the sights of her newfound freedom. She also took advantage of the opportunity to talk with Cadmus as they walked, trying to better understand him. There was still a small squad of retainers and guards but she felt rather safe with Cadmus despite having just met him. He conveyed a certain confidence that Lucia found both comforting and arousing. He certainly didn't have the wealth of her father, but something in the way he looked at the world, made her envious of his experiences. He was even more well traveled than her father, having seen things few in Rome had encountered.

Still Lucia was a young girl and her attentions changed velocius quam asparagi conquantur so as soon as her uncle was in sight she ran from Cadmus and threw herself into his arms. "I have missed you uncle." She said as she planted many small kisses about his face, her arms wrapped about his neck. Lucia was quite an affectionate niece and clearly enjoyed her uncle's company. When she was done with her greeting she introduced Cadmus, "here is my savior, he has released me from my gilded cage." She said happily, hoping her uncle would take a liking to her bodyguard. She respectfully allowed the two older men to exchange whatever pleasantries were appropriate. Then teasing her uncle she asked "are you ready to let me begin my apprenticeship?" Her father would have a stroke if he heard her talk this way.

House Iulia

The sun was rising on the Eternal City.

As if life ever truly slept during the night hours. The home to a populace of a near-million people, crowded on the banks of the Tiber, it was always lively somewhere in its endless maze of streets. Plebeians going to and fro on their daily business, groups of slaves carrying out chores for their masters, while pampered equestrians and patricians rode in style in curtained litters. At night, the clog of the streets changed from a dense mass of humanity from all four corners of the Republic to the endless trudge of trade wagons and carts, forbidden from entering Rome during the day due to their sheer amount. The traffic clogged the streets either way.

For Drusus Iulia Nerva, soldier, General, a Proconsul at the end of his term of office, it was home. And whether he would be elated to be returning to the city at the center of the world, he was not quite sure. It was not his first homecoming, nor his longest stretch away. This recent bout had seen his absent six years. Six years, of missed games, races, scandal, and political intrigue and troubles. He had plenty of his own out east, representing the standard of the Republic in the sandy battlefields against the Parthian menace. With remarkable success, he had defended the integrity of the Republic’s far flung borders.

Upon his brow even, a wreath of twigs from the victorious field of battle itself adorned his figure, despite how sorely it itched and irritated his head. He wore only the soldier’s tunic, emblazoned with a stitched eagle of the legions, with a crimson cloak about his shoulders. His rank and title were only emphasized by his prominent escort of a handful of lictors and Thracian bodyguards he recruited from his auxiliary forces. There was too much death and backstabbing in Rome, quite literally, these days. And returning to politics was the only natural way to go, if one wanted to stay relevant in this landscape. Drusus could not realistically be like old Cincinnatus, who after having supreme power and Dictatorship had laid it down to return to his farm to live out his days. Drusus had a thrill for power now. He needed more. He wanted more.

First, he had to put his own house in order. He was Patriarch of his family, an ancient gens of Rome going back to the Founding. His first wife, a fortunate match that had some fondness, had died many years ago. Before his recent term of office as Proconsul of Syria, he had been wed to the daughter of a fellow Senator and patrician, Alexander Merula. Alexandria was beautiful, intelligent by all accounts, and young. Very young, a decade and more his junior in years. He had been wed to her and then barely a few months later on the ship to the east. All these years, he heard of no child and thankfully no scandal. That in itself seemed suspicious. What had she really been up to? And what was he to do with this wife he did not know, who was to be the partner in his political ambitions? That remained to be seen as he arrived home at all, to the ancient familial estate of his family within the city, and thought he should be relieved to see it still standing all these years.

Well the first thing he needed to do was let the big names in Rome know he was back. Him, and his demobilized army. All of whom Drusus was patron to now, all of whom served as his clients in whatever work he should require. Elections were violent affairs. And now so many able-bodied and hardened veterans of war roaming the streets of Rome. It certainly had worked out well for Sulla several years ago. He had some prizes to display, arrangements and deals that could be made, prisoners of war to sell, pockets to enlarge. In exchange, favours and support. Goodwill. That is how one rose in Rome.

His procession passed through the gate and into the brief courtyard, before coming to the broad doors of his house. He pushed them open and entered, his lictors and bodyguard fanning out on all sides in a few seconds display of pomp and decorum, before standing still. Here, a proper traditionalist wife might greet him with bread and salt, before returning to her loom and continuing her seamstressing. So what ironic gift had the gods given to Drusus then, he wondered?

Cadmus laughed at the girls suggestion. "I hope not my lady, if you do that I'm not sure who your father woudl kill first, him or me." He joked with Lucia's uncle. He subtly assessed the man, seemed like your standard Roman politician, but he had long since learned that if you ran a good brothel you were more than you appeared. "I hope you will forgive any missteps on my part. I have literally just been hired by your brother. He looked around the brothel casually he wasn't really taking an interest in anything until his eyes settled on, what he thought, was a truly beautiful woman, she looked Persian a little younger than him but not much, and she had all the grace of a cat. He smiled and then his eyes moved on around the room, taking note of any faces that looked interesting, or potentially might be in need of a hire. Never hurt to be prepared in case the old senator's whims changed. "I have to say, despite all my travels I've never seen this kind of establishment, quite so..." He jestured with his hand and struggled to find a word "Elegant. Accept maybe the harem of some Egyptian prince. You have done quite well for yourself, if you don't mind an old solider saying."
