In a place on the other side of night, deep in a hungry void, someone was watching the stars. She moved her hand in front of her face almost absent-mindedly, seeing how many she could blot out with a single finger, how much of the sky she could return to perfect, unbroken blackness.
"My lady." said a male voice from behind her.
"You have returned?" she asked, without looking around. "Is everything ready?"
"We may begin tomorrow. The Star Girls are weak and fractured. Nothing like what they used to be."
She let out a sound from her throat that might have been a very faint laugh. "So you are saying nothing will stand in your way? I hope you can live up to your promises. I have waited....lusted for this for what felt like an eternity."
"I know something of loneliness, my lady. I assure--"
She held up a hand, without looking round. "No. You know nothing, compared to me."
There was a pause, and then he spoke again. "Of course. Your cause is righteous, and I wish only to help you attain victory, and make all as it should be."
She laughed softly. "Oh, I know exactly what you wish for. And even though she doesn't know it yet.....she's waiting for you."
.....
Jin woke up, looking round the bedroom frantically. For a moment, he'd been certain he was being watched. But there was nothing but his bedroom and the familiar mess--last night's takeaway, the piles of schoolbooks and manga mixed together indiscriminately, the computer off the one corner with several action figures perched on it, and several cardboard boxes. Even so, it was strange how even such a tiny flat could feel too big for just him.
But he was alone, he was sure of that. He caught his breath, feeling his heart return to normal. He had been so sure, in the baseless certainty of dreams, somebody had been watching him--or watching everyone. But there was nothing there, other than the curtains flapping in the breeze where they had somehow come open, and the night sky beyond that, with the first hints of dawn at the edges of the horizon. And that meant urgh that there was only a little more time before he had to get up and be at school. Well, he was awake now, maybe he could just get an early start and get ready. Have his books neatly organised, his homework completely up to date. Maybe take the scenic route to school, and not be in a rush.
Yeah, that'd be a good idea. Just as soon as he'd laid back down and closed his eyes for five minutes....
