Tarak Tales Shake-down: Terror Down Below!

Chay turns his head slightly while putting the goggles onto his head, looking at the recently melted entrance/exit. "Eh, a wise man once said: when a mountain stands in your way, don't expect it to move. Though he never said anything about being inside of one either." he says and sighs, turning back to look at the map.

"I guess not, but it still applies. There is a mountain in out way after all. So where-to? I'm pretty sure we're on level three now, but that's all I know, you're the one with the map." The gold plating and the small gems on her sword glinted in the light of her gemlight, reflecting it on the rock walls around them with increased intensity.

"Well... We are at the third level, and the ways out are on the other side of the mine shaft..." he says and continues to look over the map, checking the wheel and thinking it would be the fastest way out of the mines. "Yeah, we're at level three alright... there's supposedly a steep drop ahead with some pullie carts which we can possibly use to get down quickly."

"Then let's hop to it before we get to be some giant creature's lunch." Cersei advanced carefully, guided by her light toward the steep drop. "C'mon!"

Chay doesn't go to the steep drop directly, instead searching for one of the railings so he'll have somewhat of a ladder to climb down on due to the carts previously used back and forth for it. "Oi, found a railing!" he calls over and begins to head down on it, taking careful steps to make sure that the wood isn't rotting or breaking under his weight. "This seems a little bit better than just risking it with the drop on its own."

Going down doesn't seem to be a problem; there's a ramp passage a short distance away, but on the way there there's a pulley-drop cart system for bringing ore up quickly; special angled carts on a circular track up and down a steep incline between the third and fourth levels. It's the kind of thing used to move ore before they get the full mine-cart tracks laid, and since the fourth level is well-established at this time, it's comparatively disused, the carts recycled for use between the fifth and the start of the sixth level. It does allow for a fast descent, but isn't easy for a way back up.

Koh maintains his stealthy creeping, but surreptitiously lets both of the others know he's still there before they move out.

Closing the ramp passage has changed the airflow qualities of the mine, and the air finds its new pathways pretty quickly. Something about the new flow-ways travels across a drill hole or something and creates a constant, low-pitched quavering moan. The darkness is negotiable, but this deep, everything is very chilly, and there's a dampness condensing on the walls. What with the river right close by, the water table in the area is high, and the mines are well, well below it. That has its effect.

The map shows the possible ways down as well as up; it's just a matter of where they want to start for.

The air pressure due to how much below the water level they were was beginning to get to her. She tried to swallow and yawn to relieve the pressure, which managed to do the job for now. She held her robes close to her to keep herself warm down in the chilliness. "Damn, it's cold..." She commented as she saw her breath condensing in the air in front of her. "How the hell do they take the pressure?"

"If I was running the show, I'd be starting the newcomers off at the first couple of levels," Chay says and coughs while stopping for a little. "Then as they progressed in work the new levels will be filled with the older miners, whilst the new miners would fill the older levels, soon getting use to each part without any serious training..."

"Perhaps. I wouldn't want to be down here in the first place though. Anyway, let's keep moving down. It's only gonna get colder and more pressurized...Maybe I could use magic to ease that up if it gets to be too much?" (If it does come to that, I was thinking of using Energy Alteration)

"Sure..." he says and continues to descend with his partners behind him, the goggles flickering just as a torchlight would, giving him a moderate amount of paranoia from the movements and the way the wind is being caught in the tunnels. "Damn it all..." Chay mutters to himself as he checks the map, looking back to judge the distance they have and then continuing to descend.

As Chay glanced at his map, most of the way down one of the near-vertical channels, and Cersei looked down beyond him (with a stealthy Koh lurking about, watching their rear but staying close), the wizard saw a flicker of movement on the other side of the Guard; something thin and wiggly snaked around the bottom edge of the shaft and shot toward Chay almost as if it had eyes on the tip. Which, given it looked like the tentacle arm of some strange Night Plague beastie, might have been the case.

Unfortunately, Chay was glancing at the map while in mid-climb, so he couldn't notice. Cersei was surprised enough by its sudden appearance, and its alien behavior, that she couldn't react instantly; the tentacle had time to shoot up and wrap around Chay's ankle before anyone could do anything.

((the tentacle had surprise; Chay was hampered by the fact he specifically declared he was looking at the map at that point, and he was blocking most of Cersei's vision until it was too late for her to react. All that has happened is the tentacle moved in and grabbed hold of Chay's ankle; it hasn't even started to pull yet.))

((What I want from you folks is a declaration of an action you intend to do in this round. This is essentially our first combat. Therefore, remember that each thing you try to do decreases your total die pools when you get to rolling. So keep it simple. I'm also suggesting we wait for Kite to post a declaration before I decide what I'm going to have him do. I intend to play him hopefully true to form, but I do want to give him the chance to post before I do so.))

Cersei watched as the strange appendage wrapped itself around Chay's ankle, then tried to yell before it did anything else. "Chay!" She shouted, seeing the strange thing in the red light of her gem. Cersei gathered power into her free hand and focused on the lowest part on the prehensile appendage she could see and fired an energy bolt after chanting a short ritual.

Chay looks up to Cersei again before looking to where she was gazing torwards, finding his ankle with something wrapped around it. With a quick look down to where it is coming from, he sets his gaze to the next foot or so from his ankle on what is holding him, parting his lips whilst they curl into a devious smile. About time I got the chance... he thinks to himself in that split moment, his mouth forming the words to call out. "IGNITE!!" in a harsh and rather loud voice, seeing the rims of the goggles flare before his sight is beginning to be covered with the sudden burst of light.

(basically he's using the fire ray attack via his goggles, which if i remember correctly was a gaze attack)

((All right, it's been more than 24 hours. Let's hit this.))

((Tentacle declares it's going to try and yank Chay down the hole; we'll resolve him as the last action. Koh, not being able to see what's going on, but knowing there's something down there, suddenly has a "my friend's in trouble!" moment, and does something semi clever. He dives for the other vertical shaft, dropping feet first and spinning in mid-air so that he can grab the rails with his feet and hands and slide down them like people can slide down the sides of a metal ladder. He doesn't have Climbing/Jumping built up, but he does have Acrobatics at 5D, which I'll allow for the leaping, spinning, and using the rails to slow and control his fall. Also, sticking the landing. To save time and effort, I'll lump it all under one roll; a Difficult roll. Koh rolls 2, 5, 3, 6, 5 = 21, so he hits the shaft, his boots squeal down the rails, and he lands easily on the floor of the passage below, even rolling to the side to kill momentum and make himself less of a target. I'll be nice and figure he drew his weapons earlier, and he can do that stuff while keeping a grip on his blades, so he's on his feet and armed by the end of the round. Since this won't directly affect the others, I'll just count him as resolved.))

((Chay's Perception is higher, so he's supposed to be resolved first. There's no such distinction as a "gaze" attack in this system, as this isn't D&D, so it's just a Dexterity roll to use, but it's also very short range, so difficulties are low. Chay rolls 4, 2, 5, 2 = 13, quite more than enough to hit. Damage roll is 3, 5, 2 = 10, but I'm keeping the tentacle's Strength resistance roll secret for now.))

((Cersei is employing Energy Bolt, which uses both Energetics and Procreatics. Her Energetics skill is 2D + 1D amulet +1D wand +2 ritual -1D for using 2 skills = 3D+2. Procreatics is the same. Energetics roll is 4, 5, 4 = 13 +2 = 15. Just enough. Her Procreatics roll is 4, 4, 6 = 14 +2 = 16. Difficulty to hit at this range would normally be Easy (around a 10), but Chay is rather blocking the way and hasn't made any effort to allow a clear shot, so the difficulty is Moderate. The Energetics roll still clears it, though, and the damage inflicted is 16.))

Chay's goggles spout a jet of flame, flaring bright in the darkness, which stabs against the fleshy tendril below his leg and spreads down the length of it. The thing below starts to shriek in an unearthly tone that sound almost disturbingly human, and the tendril around his ankle flexes tightly, feeling like it's almost about to dislocate the ankle.

Then a blast of light barely misses Chay's head as it flashes down the shaft, exploding against the base of the tentacle as the flame jet reaches the same point. That's enough to sever the horrible appendage, leaving it swinging from Chay's ankle, a surprisingly heavy weight that threatens to drag him down anyway, as the whole severed length convulses and constricts.

Koh moves silently, and Cersei is distracted, so neither of the others realize the thief flashes down below to help. He slams to the ground and rolls, bringing his blades into a better grip, just as fire and magical light explode from the base of the other tunnel. He looks up, and illuminated in the blast he sees a horrible, distended face of something, almost human, but stretched impossibly wide, the cheeks and brow marred by smeary black lines that seem painted on. It opens up a mouth with too many sharp teeth and shrieks, and in the reflections from the fire and exploding energy bolt, he glimpses what seem like other grafted-on faces down the thing's massive sides, also seeming to blindly scream from their places amid a skin made of roiling tentacles...

((Koh has no special Willpower rating, and his Knowledge is 2D. Luckily, he rolls a 6, 6 = 12, plus re-roll is 3 = 15. He doesn't suffer a mental stun or other damage from seeing such a vision of maleficent squirmy terror. He's as shaken as anyone might be, but he can think and move normally.))

Situation as it stands:

Chay still in the one shaft, has a burning, spasming severed tentacle with a death-grip on his ankle, weighing his one ankle down pretty solidly.

Cersei is still at the head of that shaft. with Chay in the way.

Koh is the man on the ground in the lower level, currently not necessarily noticed yet (as far as he can tell), but is the only one who has actually seen the horrible, horrible creature.

Horrible, horrible creature is reeling from the flaming pain and loss of its tentacle.

Cersei grinned victoriously as she saw her energy bolt score a hit on the tentacle, severing it nearer to the base. She slid down the ladder, trying to go slowly enough to keep control, but fast enough that it would be more efficient than just climbing down.

"Gah! Get off already!" Chay calls out while shaking his leg, soon giving up and just holding onto the railing while sliding down, hoping that his gloves keep any friction burns from happening. As he slides down he kicks his leg again, trying to get the flailing dead weight off of his ankle. "Damn thing must like me..." he says to himself as he keeps his eye on his ankle, hoping to make sure that he won't fall all the day down because he couldn't get a balanced grip.

Landing after Chay, Cersei drew her sword and swung it, silently casting a spell of Empowered Weapon, specifying the type of energy as cold.

((Nobody's got Climbing/Jumping, so it's all Strength attributes. Chay's sliding down before he gets pulled down by the weight of the tentacle, and I'm going to rule he'll step aside as Cersei barrels down right after him. He said he'd had his longsword out, and he never said he sheathed it again. Now, as declared, Cersei is also readying her weapon, but she also never sheathed her own sword, so I'm just going to have her bring it up as she lands and taking a swing as she casts her spell (if she had to draw, it would be an action, although drawing doesn't take a dice test, so that would be 4 actions, meaning each roll would be -3D and she wouldn't have a die to roll for her sliding down if she tried that, and if she doesn't make the sliding roll, it's pointless, anyway, cause she'll end up flat on her ass and possibly injured). So both of them were working semi-awkwardly, but still working, with their swords.))

((Chay needs to resolve first: Strength is 4D, 5, 6, 4, 3 = 18, quite enough to resolve the slide down safely. Now it's Cersei's turn: Strength is 3D, -2D for multiple actions, 6 = lucky Wild Die! Reroll 3 = 9 total, which will do for now. The spell needs to be cast before the weapon strikes, so Empower Weapon is Energetics, which is 2D, +1D amulet, but the wand isn't in play as her hands are full, -2D multiple actions, 6 = goddamn, girl is lucky! Reroll 6, reroll 3 gives her exactly the 15 she needs! Holy crap, I didn't think that would work. But Empower Weapon is in effect as she makes a swing: Melee Weapons 5D, -2D for multiple actions, 5, 6, 4 = 15, and her luck holds. I honestly didn't think she'd make it through so many actions successfully, but it seems to have worked out. Damage is 3D Strength, +1D+2 bastard sword, +2D Empower Weapon, 2, 2, 3, 6, 2, 6 = 21, and again, I'm keeping the thing's Strength secret.))

((With everybody else creating a distraction right in front of the creature, Koh will attempt to blend in with the tunnel wall and circle off to the side, it's a reasonably wide chamber right here, so he'll try and move to a flanking position (which does not provide special dice bonuses, it's just a good tactical choice). Sneak 6D, +3D magical cloak, 2, 5, 3, 1, 6, 1, 5, 4, 2 = 29, and Cersei must have used up all the luck, but it's still freakin' high, so Koh melts into the shadows and hustles to a tactically wiser position))

((Oh, and just to get a jump; neither of them have Willpower skills, so Chay's 2D Knowledge roll is 6, 6, Reroll 3 = 15, and Cersei's 4D Knowledge roll is 2, 5, 6, 4 = 17. Both do not go mad at the sight of the thing.))

Chay slid down the rusty rails, his fighting gloves and the longsword hilt still held, icepick-like, in his hand squealing as he followed the call of gravity. The flaming tentacle coiled on the rock floor beneath him as he slid, and he landed in the midst of the fiery mass, sending sparks and gobbets of burning fat and gristle and tough alien muscle flying. His boots smoldered as he stumbled to the side, swinging his longsword in an arc to bring it up to fighting position now that he had the room to maneuver it, almost coincidentally severing the tip of the tentacle right at his ankle. He ended up at fighting ready, eyes widening as he took in the almost indescribable horror of the thing in front of him.

Cersei was close behind Chay, barely keeping her control on the slide down the rails, and stumbling a bit on her landing, almost slipping on the flaming remains pooling at the bottom of the shaft, but she still kept her footing, spinning and bringing the bastard sword around, her mind sending mystical energy charging through its blade. She had time to register the terrifying alien-ness of the monster before her sword blade bit into its human-like cheek, smeared with lines like runny ink, and the flesh around the wound frosted over with ice. Her blade slid cleanly through the flesh, and was unimpeded through the width of the mouth, slicing through the other cheek, as well.

The sword blade swung free as the creature reared back, and the underside of its slug-like body was nothing but a mass of tentacles. The sides of its mouth hung loosely, giving it a rictus grin that only seemed to make it more evil, and it stared down at Cersei... in the harsh white glow from her gemlight, comparatively tiny glittering humanlike eyes locked onto hers, incongruously small for the huge, stretched-out face. It was like a palpable wave of hatred that issued forth from the thing.

It reared back, and then kept sliding, as if the floor were frictionless. The slithering noise they had been hearing was as echoey and faint in person as it had been heard at a distance, but the thing backed up at tremendous speed and dashed into a side passage, leaving the chamber. As it left, the room suddenly got warmer, back up to the usual underground temperatures (still comparatively chill from what they were used to, but no longer cold enough to see their breath), and the oppressive sense of air pressure also went back to normal for the area, actually making their ears pop with the change.

They were momentarily alone in the chamber.

Kohdeki's heart raced in his chest. The horror he had witnessed was quite terrible indeed.

"Man, that thing was uglier than you, Chay. What the fuck was it?" Kohdeki asked, trying to inject a pun into the now silent situation.

"Oi, alot of things are uglier than me," Chay retorts and flexes his jaw, since the pressure in his ears seemed to rise slightly before popping inside of his skull. "Gah! Whatever that was it's definately afraid of us now..." He thinks back to when one of the gaurdsmen was mentally disturbed. "Oh... that must have been the reason for the gaurd's mental breakdown..." he says and icepicks the longsword again, resting his open hand on his chin with the elbow on the pommel.

Cersei sheathed her sword, while shaking a little. The monster had scared her a little with the way that it stared at her, but all in all she was okay if a little shaken. "It...it hates me. The way it looked at me was just so...horrible." She shook her head, trying to get rid of the fear. "A-anyway. Let's keep going. We've still got at least two levels to go before we're even close to where we need to be."

"I disagree," Chay says and looks at the map with his goggles on, thinking of the amount of time it's been before the disappearances and the first investigation. "If anything, not only is that what we're after, but it's beginning to head closer to the entrance to... do... whatever it does besides scare the crap out people..." He drops his head and shoulders from the fact that he almost got through something logical without screwing up... almost. "Either way, that thing is both dangerous on its own whilst being on the move. This is it Cersei, we've found what we're after." Chay looks to his mage companion before looking to his ankle, noticing that he cut off the tentacle from his ankle. With a dip down and a grip onto the object, he opens up his belt pouch and stuffs the thing into one of the empty pouches that he keeps for proving he completed his job. "Friggin disgusting..."

"You don't know that!" She snapped at him. "Agreed this thing is dangerous and should be taken care of, but we have to rule out anything else first. We continue downward, Chay. If we happen to cross its path on the way then so be it, we'll deal with it then. But if you want to go on a wild fucking goose chase, and if it happens that the thing isn't what we're here to kill, then...Well, then I don't know what, but it'll be bad."

"Oi, it fits the profile Cersei. If this isn't what we came here for, then what is? It's what has been making that friggin slithering sound this entire time, and it's horrid enough to be able to scare the crap out of the two of us," he says and tilts his head, calling back to Koh. "You aside since you're stealthy enough to shit your pants in complete silence," Chay returns his look back to Cersei. "Then what else could? If you want to continue heading down, then be my guest, but we won't be finding anything other than that creature again, with the possibility of some corpses lying around here and there." He sighs and rests his palm on his head, trying to calm down but every time he closes his eyes that creature seems to spring its face up into his imagination. "Damn abomination..." he lifts his head. "If this isn't classified, the bards in town will get a load of this."
