The Mountain Between Us [Semper Fi & Kolath

He nodded and worked as quickly as he could before pulling out the small tube of super glue, he knew it wasn’t the best but considering how deep the cut was he would either need to do a double layer of sutures or find some other way to close the deep part of the wound. After a moment he poured a little bit of the rubbing alcohol into the wound to help clean out any infection that might have started already before he pressed the deeper part of the wound together with a bit of the super glue.

After just a few moments it set with little pain besides the burn of the alcohol. He then put together the needle and thread now both strealized before he worked as quickly as he could setting in several stitches to seal the upper part of the wound. He was quick as he could but making sure it was done correctly not wanting to have to repeat the process. After just a few moments he was done and tied off the string before adding another dose of rubbing alcohol to the outside. “Alright moment of truth, this is probably going to hurt more than anything.” He loosened the belt letting the blood flow return to her leg along with all the feeling.

Kat grimaced as he poured the rubbing alcohol on it. The super gluing didn’t feel great but it didn’t hurt horribly. The stitching hurt more. She hissed and whimpered on occasion but she remained almost motionless from the waist down, not wanting to interfere with his actions and cause herself more pain. He finished up and she sighed in relief. Another slug of whiskey and he took the belt off.

The pain throbbed though her and she whimpered again, her hands balling into fists, nails digging into her palms as she gritted her teeth, the pain seemed to last forever before it finally began to fade, she was panting and her eyes watered a bit. She didn’t relax until the pain began to fade. Letting out a shuttered breath she sighed. “Wasn’t as bad as I was expecting.” She said a little breathlessly.

Jason chuckled softly at her bravado knowing full well how fucking bad that must have hurt. He had already gotten everything cleaned up and put back away in the first aid kit before she had recovered enough to make that comment. “Uhuh. I would walk on it for a couple days Kat which is just fine considering thats how long I expect us to be stuck here.” He wrapped the cut and bandaged it making sure it had the room it needed to breath to allow it to heal.

After he was done with that he made sure everything was in its place before he came back over adding another log to the fire making sure it kept going. “I looked around the water appears to be shut off but from everything I can see the pipes are fine in fact this place seems to have been built for this weather. The pipes run through ducts connected to the fireplace which allows the pipes to no freeze. Just have to figure out where to turn them on and we could have running water.”

She didn’t like having to just sit around but for tonight at least she would. She listened to Jason talk about the water pipes and she nodded. “I saw some hunting equipment hung up on the side of the house, looked like there was a pond down the hill. We might be able to fish if we can break though the ice. Our guns should make hunting fairly easy.”

They’d only be here a few days probably, but they’d need to eat between now and then. And the pond would provide fresh water until they managed to get the water pipes turned on, if they managed it. “Is there a bed in the other room? I figure we can drag the mattress out here, one of us can sleep on the bed, the other on the couch,” She mused, glancing around the cabin. “You think the plane went down by accident or by design?” She wouldn’t put it past the people she was testifying against to try and take down the plane to keep her from getting to the trial.

Jason came back and settled down next to her for the moment he had a bit more inventory to run through but he had seen some canned food in the shelves when he was rummaging for tools to help with her leg wound so he didn’t think they would have much issue with food, not for a couple days. “Hopefully it won’t come to that but we can see how things go.” He sighed thinking things over as she mentioned the crash and bit his lip a little. “Honestly, if it was an accident it was a damn convenient one.”

He pushed himself back up before going back into the bedroom and a few moments later was dragging a queen size mattress out of the bedroom to flop it down in front of the fire. There was just enough space for it not to be too close but still to be inside the circle of heat with the sofa. He came back over to sit next to her sighing as he settled. “Your bed my lady, unless you prefer the sofa that is.” he chuckled softly fully expecting to end up on the sofa and not really wanting to hear anything else about it. “After all you are injured and need to be as comfortable as you can be.”

Kat watched him drag the mattress to the living room, she got up and hobbled her way to the bed, stretching out, "Thanks," Her leg throbbed some, She settled onto the bed, "If the couch isn't comfortable, this bed is more than big enough, we're adults, we can share a bed," She didn't want him being unnecessarily uncomfortable. As the adrenaline faded she felt the sleep taking over. She yawned, curling up under the blanket, with a blanket, next to the fire, it wasn't that cold, but she would be grateful to get back to civilization, it was sure to get a hell of a lot colder up here in the mountains before it got any warmer.

Still awake, she looked at Jason, "What's gonna happen with the trial? When we don't show up?" She asked softly, she figured within the next few hours it would be discovered that they hadn't arrived, and a search would begin, but still it could take days for them to find the plane, assuming they hadn't gone off course. Luckily the cabin was fairly close to the plane, they should see any rescue personnel when they arrived.

Jason smiled and took one of the blankets that he had found and moved to stretch out on the couch. It was extremely uncomfortable actually but he tried not to show it as he shifted around trying to find a comfortable place. He didn’t want to impose on her even though he knew she was right about being able to share a bed...though he knew that the thought of sharing her bed in a different way had come to his mind several times while they had been working together.

He sat back up as she asked that very important question and sighed softly shaking his head. “That’s...well most likely they will postpone it till they finish the search for us in which case it will be rescheduled to a different day. Which might be months down the line and give them more time and chances to wiggle out of the evidence but there isn’t much we can do about it. If we can prove that they tampered with the plane we can get them for murder of the pilot and attempting to kill a federal witness both of which are really bad and just makes the rest so much better.”

She nods, it made sense but she personally doubted they’d make the plane crash stick. Too many variables. She watched him shift around on the couch, she shook her head, “Come on Jason, if it’s uncomfortable come down here,” she patted the bed, the couch hadn’t been that comfy to sit on, she didn’t expect it to be comfortable to sleep on.

She slid over to make more room for him, trying to not think about all the times she thought he was handsome, while they were working together before this trip. There was no need to complicate the situation further by adding emotions into the mix. But they were adults, they could share a bed while they worked on surviving out in the middle of no where.

Jason sighed and shook his head before giving in to move down to the bed next to her. He let her have the side closest to the fireplace and the warmest. He could feel her body heat coming from her body so close to him and to try and focus on something else. He rolled over onto his side his back to her as he closed his eyes pulling the pillow close under his head. “Good night Kat.”

He sighed tried to relax but knew it would take some time to fall asleep since the plane crash was still so recent and it took time for the adrenaline to wear off. But the warmth and the comfortable bed, because as uncomfortable the couch was the bed was equally comfortable in response to that. He sighed feeling himself drifting off slowly. As long as there was little more talk that night he would be able to sleep deeply shortly.

Her body was exhausted, it didn't take her long to drift off to sleep. But her sleep was restless, twitching and whimpering on occasion, reliving the plane crash repeatedly, she finally woke up gasping, panting for air. Hoping she didn't wake Jason she crawled out of bed, limping her way to the window to look out. Snow was falling, God she hated snow. She'd hated it when she was growing up in Montana, and she still hated the damn snow. And now she was trapped on a damn mountain. She stood quietly for a while, just watching the snow. Hopefully soon rescue personal would be arriving, and they'd be on their way to testify.

Unable to sleep she limped back and added a log to the fire, before sitting on the uncomfortable couch, watching the fire, absently rubbing her leg to try and dull the throbbing sensation that was pulsing from the wound.

Jason work in the morning looking around at the fire that had gone down over the night. It was normal at this point for him to wake first, the last five days here had taught him that if Kat slept at all he would wake before her. And it was getting harder and harder to sleep in that bed with her and not slip his arms around her. The first couple days they had expected rescue at any moment kept looking to the skies or down the mountain. But as those days had passed he realized that either this was going to take a lot longer or they weren’t even looking in the right place.

He had spent the last day digging into the wreck of the plain finding maps and charts and a bit of flight information and with a bit of trigonometry he had been able to figure out where they should have been based on their flight path. That was when he had realized the mountains were all wrong they should have been much shorter or something he wasn’t and expert but some of the landmarks he should have seen weren’t there. He added another log to the fire wondering what he was going to tell her when she woke up.

Kat woke up quickly and silently, when another log was added to the fire. Kat was a restless sleeper, some nights she didn't even sleep much, the last five days had been a struggle. Coming to terms that rescue may not be coming as quickly as they thought. Her leg was healing well, but of course she was still favoring. She sat up, stretching lazily, she looked at Jason. "Morning," She said as she climbed off the mattress, habit had her checking her leg wound, it looked well, no infection, it was healing up very well.

She was trying to come to terms with the fact that they were stuck on this mountain. It had snowed for two days straight. Luckily they had enough canned food for now, but soon they were going to have to think about other means. Luckily the side of the cabin outside had hunting snares and a couple fishing poles, with the frozen lake down the small hill, perhaps they could break the ice and do some fishing. "What's with the look on your face?" She asked, something had Jason looking unhappy.

Jason sighed softly hearing her wake up and looked at the pile of logs by the fire knowing they actually would need to go get more soon since the wood pile was outside by a small shed and he was pretty sure it was all dry thanks to the tarp. He sighed again looked over his shoulder at her and just smiled before he stood up. “Kat...I need to show you something.” He went over to the kitchen table and brought back all the maps and his notes laying them on the bed between them as he sat back down.

He pushed them into order making sure that he pointed to each one in turn as needed to show his work and the point he was trying to make. “So...this is the flight path we were supposed to be taking.” He pointed it out. “And add the time that we were in flight at the speed we were traveling we should be about here.” He pointed to a point on the map before he walked over to one of the large windows. “Which means that pikes peak should be right out that window about five miles away.” There was no large peak no anything that could ever be thought to be named like that. “There are other missing landmarks...I found a couple I think but..” he came back over and pointed to a X on the map several hundred miles of their intended flight path. “If they are the landmarks I think they are...we are a long way off from where we should be...they are looking in the wrong area.”

Kat eased herself back down to the bed while he laid out maps. She listened to his reasoning, she followed his logic, and it all made sense. But she felt her stomach drop, she frowned. "Shit. We aren't going to get rescued, are we?" She closed her eyes briefly, she knew the answer, they wouldn't be found. "By now, with the snow falling, the plane is probably buried." She sighed softly. "Alright. Alright. Well, there's nothing we can so about that. But we can survive, we can do what we need to do. And when we can, I guess when the snow melts some, we'll try for the nearest town?" She mused, glancing over at Jason.

"But we have this cabin, we have the potential to hunt, if there's anything around to hunt, we have canned food. We can do this, right? We can survive for a while." She absently rubbed her leg, since it was sore, but it wasn't bothering her much. This situation was bothering her more. "All we can do is handle the situation, right?" She felt the urge to panic bubbling up, but she knew better, there was no benefit to panicking. She swallowed hard, taking a deep shuddering breath.

Jason sighed and leaned back on the couch shaking his head. “No we aren’t getting rescued at least not any time soon.” He looked at her as she processed everything that he had been about the plane and their survival. He knew there was some game around he had seen the signs of it. However he wasn’t sure he was going to be able to kill and field dress any animal. However he supposed the hunger could make you do a lot of things that you never thought you could.

He nodded slowly and looked up at her before smiling and slipping an arm around her shoulder pulling her close to him. “Hey we are going to be fine. We have plenty of food and I think I saw a drill to get through the ice out back in one of the outbuildings.” He chuckled. “I guess we will get to see if a couple of city people like us can handle roughing it for awhile.” He kissed her temple softly trying to help encourage her not really thinking about how close they were or anything right now.
