It was the start of the second semester in the Magic Academy of Taillteann, the snows have started to fall and School was winding back up for the students of the Academy. Many of the students were losing focus as holidays come up, but while they were all excited, there was a major lesson to be held for the few students deemed worthy enough to finally obtain one of the most important tools for a Magician. As a crowd of students, from first years to even a few 3rd years, one of the Lead Teachers step up onto the platform. With a flick of the wrist, the lights dim slightly and she speaks up, fiery red hair aglow from her magic.

"Today, all of you have been selected as eligible to explore the wilds near the school for an important reason. What you will be obtaining today will not be easily replaced, but what you obtain will be very important. In the forests are vast amounts of magical creatures of various types. Some are fairly harmless but clever, some are very dangerous but dull. Some require reagents you can obtain out in the field in order for you to gain their attention. Regardless of what you find, every student here will have over the weekend to complete a single assignment- No other homework or projects except for this one. A single goal- To obtain your first Familiar." She announces, putting her arm out as flames coalesce around her before forming into a bird on her arm. She continues, holding her Phoenix familiar up. "A Familiar can take many forms, and what kind of familiar you manage to obtain will depend on what you can attract or prove superiority over. Some are as simple as that, others may request a 'contract' or a deal in exchange for their assistance." she pauses as students start to chat eagerly with eachother. It was to be expected- Familiars are a big deal to a magician. They can provide anything from a simple mana source, to even enabling those who have difficulty with certain types of magic to overcome those boundries. A good Magician ended up with either a very powerful Familiar or one that lets them branch out in other ways.

After a short while, the Fiery haired professor speaks up, "Either way, there are a great many creatures out there, from the diminutive Fairies and Pixies, to the great and powerful Wyrms and even other greater creatures. But be warned, those dangerous creatures are NOT to be trifled with. If you are to come across one, Avoid disturbing it at all costs unless you are CERTAIN you can bind it. We would prefer not to have as many severe injuries as last year, nor any deaths. If you find yourself in a bad situation, we are giving each one of you a Demore Vial that should let you jump away from harm in an instant. This is a very important Assignment, and we can only allow the gates to be open for these few days at most. If you fail to get a Familiar, you will have to try again next time. Good luck, and may each of you find a fantastic Familiar to suit your needs." she finishes with a nod as the lights flair back up as she walks off.

The moment she starts walking off, many students start to chatter to one another excitedly for a short while as the Teachers around them were getting ready to organize them and lead the students. Many chatting about what kind of creature they wanted as their Familiar or what grand goals one may want.

"Ooooh! I can't wait. I think I'll go for a Pixie or something easy to help me with my Transmutation magics...oh, oh! Or perhaps an Elemental to help with my Destructive magics..." an excitable girl with brown hair and glasses chats up before turning to the blonde haired girl next to her, "What about you? What will you be going for?" she asks with a nervous, but excited smile.

The had finally arrived that Maven could hardly wait for. A day she had been waiting almost two years now since she started at the Magic Academy of Taillteann. The day when she was allowed to find and bind with her own familiar. She had been so close to qualifying her first year but came up short and was left out of the ceremony for her own safety. She didn't feel too bad since there were some third years who had barely made it in. And most students knew that going longer without a familiar meant that their growth would be slower and their time here extended. there were a few rare cases of prodigies who didn't need a familiar to move on but those were few and far between.

For Maven she needed one because while her knowledge was there her reserve was not and she grew tired faster once she began using high level spells. She suspected it was because her mother had no magical talent and what she did have came from her father. And while she could train up her reserve the fast way would be to get a strong familiar who she could draw from rather then depleting herself. She had done a lot of research into what creatures would serve her best and narrowed it down to two or three that she knew she could bind with and where they would be located.

As the fiery hair professor spoke Maven glanced around the room looking to see who else from her class was here and if any of them had not made it. As much as this was a celebration it was a bit of a race in a sense as those looking for certain creatures had to find them first. Her attention was brought back to from looking around as the girl next to her spoke to those around her and then directed the question to Maven. "Something strong, though I haven't decided on an exact creature yet, But I'll know it when I see them." She answered her voice confident as she had been prepping for this all week while the other students seemed to begin to slack off.

Soon a professor motioned her group forward leading them forward pulling them off into an empty part of the classroom. "Alright everyone take one and remember that your safety is and should always be your main goal out there. Also there's no need to rush you have a full three days to find a familiar that suits you best." The balding professor explained along with reviewing the process and making sure each of them understood it. A few moments later they were lead out to grounds in the back of the school and stood by the gate. Maven pulled her hood up over her blonde braids to shelter herself from the snow and wind which had yet to let up. Looking down the line she could see a few other groups waiting by the massive gate.

"Good luck out there."Maven said to the brunette as the professor waved the gate open with his hand and the students began to file their way into the dense forest that surrounded the school grounds. For most this would be their first time in this area as the area was strictly off limits due to the dangerous creatures that lived here. Maven quickly branched off from the others not running like some but moved at a fast pace to cover more ground. She had a vague idea of what area she would find her ideal familiar and wanted to be the first one there.

The brunette, Lieze, nods, she was one of the 2nd years and another student in Maven's class. One of the smarter students, with a penchant for Alchemy and Divination, but her actual Magic was lacking, even if her stores weren't. Part of her didn't seem to be able to get a handle on normal magicks, even if she got the theory.

As the classes split up, Lieze and the other students were all split into different groups. A few people from Maven's class was in her group of 40 odd students all led to the north gate. As a few Professors were speaking, the others were handing out small bottles with a soft red glow in it. "Remember, use these bottles ONLY when you truly need them. Pull open the cork and the magic inside will travel you to a single location that you think of. If the brain is in a state of panic, we've made them default to the Academy Courtyard, so if you can't think of something, keep that in mind." the older Professor explains.

While they explained more to students who came forward to questions, the students were, with some ceremony, given a bottle and leave to head out into the wilderness while a few were chatting with eachother, either strategizing, calming eachother's nerves, and one even gushing about the Fiery Haired Professor and her Phoenix.

The Northern area around Taillteann was snowy, icy, and harsh, but the creatures contained were typically stronger for it. If students didn't want a creature out of this area, they could travel to other quadrants and hunt there. The lands were enchanted to represent the Four Seasons in Clockwise. North was Winter, East was Fall, South was Summer, and West was Spring. This allowed all manners of creatures to exist in the area. From the Docile and Helpful Cu Sith, to the helpful, but Tricky, Pixies, and even the Proud and Powerful Dragons, though professors kept a good close eye on the strongest creatures. At least, the ones they knew about.

However, the strongest ones were typically deep into the territory, near the mountains that surrounded the Academy.

Maven drew her cloak closer to her body as well as pulled out a pair of fur lined gloves as she headed deeper into the northern territory. She didn't have a clear idea in her head of what she wanted only that she was aiming for one of the stronger creatures in the region. She knew the teachers would be overlooking them even if she couldn't see them. While annoying it was understandable consider how bad the causalities were last year. She glanced around noticing her group of forty had dwindled down to ten including herself as the others fled to the warmer and less dangerous zones that made up the rest of the school grounds. That thought never crossed her for a moment as she was were she wanted to be to find her familiar.

The cold didn't bother her too much as Maven was more specialized in combat focused destructive spells with ice being her main calling. Mostly since she grew up in a colder area much like the one she was currently trekking through. Plus she found ice magic to be under rated as it could be used non-lethally were as the other schools lacked that ability without complete control and using you're own magic to heal them back. While an elemental would help with her focus it wasn't a complete necessity as she understood the theory and practice behind as she was on the smarter side too. It was just her stores of magic that held her back being placed closer to the back half of the class.

Her boots crunched on the hardened snow as she approached the mountainous area where the snow seemed to have fallen days ago and was being recovered by what was falling. Her eyes darted around her surroundings as one hand rested near a belt of various potions. Most of which she brewed herself and were to help her survive in the frigid area should this take longer then the first day. Along with her own she had tucked the escape potion in an easy to access spot to make sure she could escape should things go horribly wrong. Along with the potions a leather bond book hung from her hip as it was her own list of spells she had not fully memorized or required more detailed casting instructions. Knowing her own limitations she held off on casting anything until it was absolotly necessary as this was the last place she wanted to exhaust herself.

The lands just outside of the Academy were plains, a nearly flat set of land for a long while, covered lightly in the pristine white of snow, which only got thicker and more even as she travels further from the city and towards the forest up ahead. The snow was soft and the soft crunching was almost cathartic, even through the lightly biting breeze that drove past. It didn't take very long to reach the forest, the snow-covered evergreens made up most of it, but there were a good few Oaks and other such trees, still green despite the winter wonderland around them. Even with those canopies, the floor of the forest still had a good cover of snow.

Even if she was decided on a strong familiar, there were numerous creatures she'd have spotted only a short while into the forest. From soft white pixies and fairies which made up some of the more common, albei elusive creatures to choose from, to a few small woodland fae creatures- Deer and the such with a more obvious intelligence to them. All weren't strong enough to really be of notice. While some did explore up to her, it wasn't hard to either scare them off or let them pass by without harm.

However, strong Familiars were scarce. While a few would have been considered strong, such as a Crystal Deer one would have sworn to have caught a glance of, they were few and far between even as the day progresses. When she had set out it had been Noon, but now it was nearly evening as she comes across a lake- somehow only partially frozen, in a clearing. Upon her approach, many creatures jolted off, but stayed near the edge of the clearing, watching her cautiously.

If she were to touch the water, it wasn't freezing either, but ranged from ice cold to a bit below room temperature at the one end that wasn't melted. The edges of the ice looked soft and dulled, as if the ice near the edge had been melted, in a fairly large radius too as it was much like a crescent moon as the closest shape. And given the weather around, it was not natural that the ice had melted- Something had melted it, and it wasn't recent either. Something used this place pretty often, and kept the ice melted on one end- the end that faced the mountains further North.

The walk through the wooded part of the northern area was nice as her eyes drifted gazing around at the local wildlife that was around her. Though the area was peaceful for now she couldn't afford to relax as she had an important task and in these areas the biggest threat was the one you couldn't see. Maven kept a running list going in her head judging all the creatures as a back up if she couldn't find the right one. She allowed most to cross her path unrestricted even slowing down her own pace to allow them to cross ahead of her. She saw no need to pick a fight with the gentle creatures around her and it wasn't her style to do so with anyone. Overall she was a reserved girl keeping her thoughts to herself and only acting when needed or someone was attacking her. It left her few few friends but the ones she did have she valued even if others in her class saw her as a bit creepy for being so quiet.

As Maven continued her hike she stopped admiring the view of the clearing and the half frozen lake taking a moment to sit on a fallen over log. As took a small sip of water from a canteen as she took in the sights. As she took in the full sight of the area certain details weren't adding up in her mind which only made her more curious about the area. She carefully walked along the frozen shore line glancing at the creatures who seemed to refuse to enter the clearing despite it being a water source and a good one too. When she reached the melted part she gracefully balanced herself on the ice leaning down to the edge of the ice. The cut in it was too perfect and one solid curve. Along with the slightly increased water temp of that side Maven was getting excited and curious to find the culprit.

Most of mages would have stopped there and turned around as it was unwise to pursue deeper where the local creatures refused to go. Though with her current goal in mind all these odd factors pointed her deeper in the interrogatory to find the source. With the day only being half over Maven carried on in a straight line from the melted spot making her way closer to the tall mountains of north. As she ventured deeper it was clear that she seemed more defensive as anything this far up would mean trouble for those who were not prepared. Her eyes glanced up at the varying cliffs and peaks searching for the next lead on to the mysterious that melted away part of the lake.

The cliffs were remarkable as they curve softly at first before ramping upwards to a hook. Though some were straight up cliffs. Over the many years the jagged cliffs had eroded a few more ledges along them as well as some of the hardier trees managing to grown along the slopes, their roots sometimes jutting out to create hand holds. There was an obvious, albei tough, way to climb these cliffs by using some of the rougher hand holds and roots of some of the trees that managed to worm their way through the rough stone. Even from a distance. In the center of one there was what looked like the outline of a cave, though it was hard to see as it was starting to get dark.

It was then a soft rattling noise from behind and probably 100 paces behind her was a large feral wolf, standing well over her height. It was probably half of her body taller than she was at an estimate from this distance. Its fur was blue that faded to a soft white even as its eyes shifted from blue to Red. A soft guttural growl rolls from its mouth as the eyes glow softly and it lets out a loud howl. At first it was just loud, but it became quickly obvious it was amplifying until a sound wave rushed outwards from its body, a tree or two right next to it being pushed backwards. The air around her vibrated even from this distance as the wave lightly pushed her. The moment the wave of force passed, the creature lightly circled Maven, staring her down as what looked like broken chains trailed behind its feet.

Maven paused looking up at the rough edges of the cliffs debating for her plan of action as the first day of her hunting would be drawing to a close. She doubted she could get high enough with what sunlight was left . And attempting to move on and climb the cliffs in the dark would be foolish and just lead to her breaking a bone and being taken out of commission. She did take some time to memorize the pattern of the roots and finding the best one to take and marking it with a light singe from a fire spell. Her next goal would be shelter for the night especially one that would shield the young mage from the winds.

Maven squinted making out the outline of the cave after focusing for a moment on it and decided it was her best plan of action. Even if it did come with it's own host of problems and dangers, as it was unwise to assume it was empty. That fact proved it's self as Maven stopped dead in her tracks at the sigh of the large feral wolves. She could tell it was no ordinary wolf by the coloration and the presence it gave off. While she was a bit nervous it was also due to excitement as she had found a good choice for her familiar. The sound wave took Maven by surprise as she wasn't the best at beast lore and didn't know what it was capable of. She quickly braced herself only being pushed back slightly as her hood and cloak were blown back revealing her school uniform underneath.

Maven remained still as the creature closed the gap and was now pacing around her as she did her best to keep note of where it was. She studied the creature more closely amazed by it's size who easily made the the young mage feel small. Though her ears perked up hearing the soft rustling of chains and looked down at it's feet. sure they were broken and the creature free but she doubted the comfort of the wolf was taken into mind when it was shackled. "Easy I'm gonna get those off of you." Maven explained softly as she slowly reached for her book and thumbed through the pages until she stopped on section of unlocking spells. She focused down at the four paws of the wolf saying a quick spell as soon the shackles around each leg would become warm before the locks snapped open and fell to the ground. "Is that better?" She asked not knowing if the creature could even understand her or communicate back.

It seemed to snort at her offer to get the chains off. The spell travels softly to the chains, which glow softly and became warm around the wolf's ankles, even to the point of melting the snow around its feet. However, even as the chains lightly shake, the spell sputters out. The chains were very much magical, and the magic around them was stronger than the spell she had just used. However, the magic did reveal one thing- a soft faint sparkling glow trailing from the 'broken' chains. The chains may be physically broken, but they bound it to something- or something was bound to it.

As it circles towards the cliffs, it tenses up before jumping onto one of the lower cliffs and stands there, staring Maven down. Even as it does, it seems to tilt its head slightly as it looks at Maven, seeming to look at something on her with familiarity and...Confusion? It seemed to recognize something on her, but didn't seem to quite know why.

Maven was a bit shocked to see her spell had no effect on freeing the creature and only melted a bit of the snow around it's feet."Huh, magical bonds? That seems a bit extreme for a creature even one of your size."Maven mumbled mostly to herself as she followed the glittering trail with her eyes before her own magic wore off it shimmer became harder to see. Something wasn't adding up with this creature as all the ones out here where suppose to be free and the only restraint on them was the barrier around the school grounds.

Her eyes shifted up her gaze just bellow the creature as the young mage didn't want to give off the impression she was challenging it. As the winds picked up she drew her cloak closer to her body trying to trap in what warmth she could. She could tell it was looking at her though it seemed to focus more on her attire then anything else. She tilted her head a bit looking down at what she had on and took off her choker which had the emblem of the school on it."You know about my school?" Maven asked wishing the two had a better way to communicate but her beast talents were lacking to say the least.

The wolf shifted a bit as it slowly slid down the side of the slope before standing in front of Maven. It was large and just standing near it, it was warm despite the soft frost that was caked onto parts of its fur, which blended in with the white. Its head grew close and it started to sniff at her before looking at the symbol on her choker. As it seemed to be trying to figure something out one of its ears twitched and it looked towards the forest. The sun was barely on the horizon and it started to get darker and darker.

With a growl and no prior warning, it reaches down with its head to grab a hold of the scruff of the cloak to lift her up. Crouching down slightly it then leaped up onto one of the cliffs, then to another, and further up. The wind was bad before, but now it was coming in intense bursts as the giant wolf was carrying her hanging by its maw as it jumps up a few cliffs. Where she had planned to climb up it ignored, instead using the powerful legs until she was in front of the cave. It was even colder up here, but before she could speak, it tilted its head before rolling her inside the cave, which would barely fit the full wolf into the entrance.

It was then a bright blue wind surrounds the giant wolf just outside of the entrance and it slowly shrinks as it walks inside. The winds soon shift to contain ice and then blue fire before walking out of the maelstrom of elements was a humanoid shape. Standing now about a head taller than Maven, but with black hair that faded to white at the tips- which ended just above her 'calves'. It was very much unkept in style as the two black wolf ears were sticking out of the top of the mess. Her body was covered by a rhapshod shawl, of some kind of ruined, old material. Her pants were made of similar material, but it was more like shorts with how torn up they were. It worked to cover up her lower half, but even if she had some normal clothing on, they wouldn't help as starting just below her shoulders, fur grew along her barely humanoid arms, which grew into an almost claw like shape until the wrists where two shackles hung off just before her hands. Her legs weren't much better, being covered in fur until her feet which were clawed and fur covered. Once again, Shackles covered the ankles as she crouches down, large clawed hand moving slowly towards Maven, only to take the choker with a frown. Standing back up, she ignores Maven to walk deeper into the cave.

Inside the cave, presumably their home, it was certainly not what one would expect. In the middle was a mass of furs from various creatures in the forests that served as a bed, in a corner was a few chewed up bones, and on the other side was...A desk. A very unkept desk with age old equipment on it, rusted over from melted snow and disuse, the wood looking pretty rotted out. There was a lot of junk on the side of the cave with the Desk, and on the far wall was two sets of shackles, one higher up, the other on the ground. Unlike the tools on the desk, they were in pristine condition, similar to the ones on the Wolf- now girl's arms and legs.

A faint squeak came out of maven's mouth as the wolf grabbed her by the back of her cloak, thankful the cloth had opted for a thicker fabric. She didn't move as the two of them made their way up the ledges allowing her new friend to do all the work. With each jump and landing she dangled softly curling up her feet and legs as much as she could so she free swung from the wolf's mouth. She was curious where they were headed as she noticed the sun setting and cursed softly not having set up a camp before making the trek up this far. The wind tore threw her as her body shivered as the higher the two of them got the colder the air was.

Her concern for shelter seemed to be put at ease as they stopped and Maven was flung into the cave tumbling a few times before she regained her composer and stood up dusting the dirt and snow off her clothes. She looked at the entrance doing so quick glance and realized the wolf was too big to fit inside. Though before she could say or do much of anything an odd wind and before she could blink saw the new figure emerge from the elements and continue on into he cave not caring much about her own presence here. She followed her deeper into the cave as now her curiosity was in complete control of her actions as she had never seen a creature like this. And everything she had seen only confirmed that this was the familiar that she wanted.

Once again the young mage was surprised as the cave seemed more lived in then she was expecting though the equipment in her seemed to have been neglect for a long time. It didn't take Maven long to make the connection between the pair of shackles on the wall and the broken ones around each of her limbs." So those keep you in this area right? kind of like a long leash?" Maven asked more thinking out loud as she was unsure if the creature could talk even in this form. She still wanted to free it as she couldn't imagine being restricted to such a harsh area for a while. She went over to the wall taking her time to examine each f the shackles for anything that might help her break them. She doubted her spell would work as the magic aura coming off them was pretty strong.

Maven next moved on to the desk glancing over at the rusted up equipment some of which she was afraid would fall apart if they were picked up. "Mmm not much help here either." She mumbled trying to open a few of the drawers to see if anything that would tell her about the magics in place on her shackles. "I'm Maven, a second year mage at the Magic Academy of Taillteann." She said turning to face the creature. She wanted to remain on her good side as the chewed up bones gave her a few idea of what might happen if she wasn't. Her eyes scanned over her more humanoid form and even now she still looked fierce and was not something she wanted to mess with

The wolf seemed to ignore Maven as they softly walks towards the pile in the corner. Raising the choker into her mouth, where Maven sees she has some fairly sharp canines, but they hardly harmed the Choker as they don't seem to be trying to harm it as they dig through the stuff in the corner. At the question, the Wolf's ears tilt upwards to look at Maven, then the chains on the wall. She gives a half whine, half growl as she looks at them, pretty much confirming what the Mage had said before going back to digging through the pile.

The shackles, while unremarkable, were definitely enchanted in some way. With further study, it was some kind of binding magic, to further confirm what she had said. But the magic was...Strange- It bound her here in some way, and not in a familiar way and it was far above her head to analyze it on her own.

When she looks through the desk's drawers, one's bottom straight falls out after she pulls it out, revealing a few rusty tools and long-dry inkwells and pens. The second from bottom drawer had nothing in it, but the bottom didn't fall out at least! Then the top Drawer was a few books. While some were Moth eaten, the others held information about some rather...advanced magic theory. Even as a 2nd year, Maven could see it was about some binding magic. There was also a ton of moth eaten papers with the purpose of research. The text was sometimes blotted or smudged by time, but there was a general jist of all of them. It was about "binding a...creature to guard a location via a Binding Contract using a item as a Medium...Seems to...when hit with a very heavy, point blank b//st of ma//c" Some of the words were smudged, including the specifics about the 'creature' it mentions. But it wasn't hard to tell the magic on the shackles was the object medium.

The other books were mostly moth eaten and there was nothing else truly interesting. There was no key to the shackles either- There was no 'Key' to get rid of a Contract, especially a relatively experimental one she knew nothing of. If she wanted to make this wolf her 'Familiar', she'd need to figure out how to get rid of those Shackles.

Maven wasn't exactly surprised by the lack of response out of her new companion and by now assumed she was unable to speak either due to the bindings or just didn't know how to. She down at the desk keeping the empty bottom drawer open as she cleared a few of the useless tools and papers from the desk. What she couldn't fit in the drawer she merely pushed off the side as they weren't going to be of any use to her anyways.Once she was content with her rather cramp work space she pulled out the few books that were contained in the second shelf. She also pulled a candle out of her satchel and lit o give her some extra reading light.

The books were anything but well kept and it made her wonder how long this stuff had been sitting here and how long the wolf was bound to this area. She flipped through the first book her eyes scanning the pages seeing mostly smeared or destroyed scribbles in it. She placed it off to the side and picked up the second book going slower as this one had some decent pages but not many. The theory inside or what she could make of it was rather interesting though she was annoyed by the holes here and there that she had to guess on to continue in order for it to make any sense at all. She remained silent as she focused on the few books and took mental notes as well as used destroyed pages to mark the important spot.

After what felt like two hours she set the last book down and leaned back in the chair letting out a bit of a sigh. She had pieced most of it together even if the process was over her skill grade. Her new friend was the guardian, the shackles the binding point and magic was the medium used to keep the two connected. She got up again this time sitting on the cold floor near the bottom shackles and more closely examined them. There was no actual lock and seem to be one solid piece of metal, mostly fused together when the original spell was put in place. She got up and flipped through the pages rereading the important pages she had marked.

"Okay I've got an idea, umm just stand back a little not sure how this is going to go." Maven explained facing the wolf as she positioned herself barely a foot away from the shackles on the wall. She drew in a long breath and exhaled it as she cupped both of her hands drawing all of her magic into two large balls of glowing energy. The books never mentioned what type of magic so she assumed a blast of pure arcane power was the best way to go even if it would deplete her reserve for a few hours. She aimed one blast up at top and the other at the bottom letting them both go at the same time. The sheer impact knock her back a little as she staggered backwards and collasped on the pile of furs in the middle of the cave.

The wolf barely paid her any mind as it continues digging through the 'junk' pile. By the time Maven had finished over by the desk and the dusty books were placed to the side, the wolf had managed to go through much of the pile and a few things were shoved off to the side. It was very dark in the cave, so what they were was a mystery, but at the asking to stand back the wolf it looks over.

As the magic practically exploded, the shackles glowed bright blue as the magic is pressured. The shackles, amid the blast of magic that lightly blast some of the wall to the floor on top of her to the 'bed', shook around amid the vortex. As the large burst of magic calms down, she could see she had at least done a decent amount on the wall and the Shackles...Were still there. However, they did have cracks along them as they were severely damaged.

The wolf had jumped a bit at the loud boom of the magic in the cave and was about to turn around when it started to hold its head as similar cracks appeared slowly over her shackles. As the magic disperses around the wall shackles in a fine blue mist, the 'binding' chains were fairly visible as they travel from the to the shackles on the wolf, who writhed a bit as it drops the choker from its mouth. For a good few moments it lay on the ground, letting out soft whines before it calms down.

"Head...Painful..." it finally growls out as it manages to stand up shakily. It stumbles over to Maven as she lay in her bedding and looks at her confused, but by the light twitch of her hand on her head, it seems whatever she did had done...something to the wolf, even if her head was pounding, the shackles were not repairing, or if they were, it was not happening at any decent speed.

Maven tried to lean up to watch as the magics collided having the exact response she was hoping for. that just happen to be the violent vortex that cased her to be forced on her back again staring up at the ceiling of the cave as the magics died down. She laid there for a moment her body drained as she felt a pang of hunger and a dirty taste in her mouth. She knew she couldn't do that again at least for a good while as her magic need time to come back. She knew some mages could continue to cast beyond their breaking point but it was risky and not worth doing.

Finally she leaned up her arms shaking a bit as she pulled herself up and admired her work. She felt conflicting emotions as she saw the shackles were still intact but she could see the cracks in the metal where the magic had done it's job. "Guess it will take a few more of those before they break completely. But it's a start right?" Maven said a little happy with her handy work as she noticed the shackles on the wolf had similar cracks on them. She was mad at her own limitations as if she had any ore magic she could break them sooner.

"Wait you spoke? You can talk?" Maven asked as her excitement calmed down being replaced with this new revelation about her companion. She walked over to her satchel pulling out a small canteen taking a few sips before she offered it up to the wolf. Next she dug out a small of cured meat mostly beef and chewed on it as the food and water would help her recover faster. Again she offered it up to her unsure if she had her own source . The field rations weren't great but it was issued by the school for the students so they had something encase they couldn't find anything on their journey.

The wolf girl nods lightly, head still pounding as she let Maven sit up. "Can, yes..." she grunts out as she lightly held the canteen for a few moments as if connecting dots before taking a sip. It handed it back shakily, looking at its own large hands and the fur groggily. Her ears were down as her head pulses lightly as it became easier...Or rather, less murky, to think. Grumbling in frustration as strange cobwebs blocked her. "Grrr...Damn it, uh...Damn...Who?" she mumbles as something was on the tip of her tongue as she started that statement, but...She was having trouble finding it. What was she saying...? The wolf girl, still lightly holding her head just looks more and more angry as every thought she tried to grasp slipped away. The frustration was even plain on her face as the wolf girl was busy trying to chase the tails of her thoughts, practically ignoring Maven as the wolf girl was silent, holding her head, and staring with a frustrated glare at the chains on the wall.

Maven smiled widely hearing her speak even if it was only a few words at a time, it was still progress to her. She watched her carefully her head half cocked to the side as she saw her get frustrated. She could only guess that the who was the one that did this to her , though she wasn't making much sense. Slowly she scooted closer to the wolf trying to find a way to ease her suffering. She looked down at the crack on the shackles connecting the dots that her sudden speech was most likely a result of her spell destroying some of the magic that kept her bound. "

"Relax I can break them another blast or two should do the trick. And with each one you'll be more free. I mean you can talk now......I just need to take a short rest, those two spells drained my magic."Maven explained pausing a bit as she wasn't sure how to word it so she didn't seem weak. Or how much the wolf knew about mages and magic. She leaned back in the pile of furs yawning slightly as the day had been more exhausting then she thought and it was a struggle to keep her eyes open. And it wasn't long before she passed out entirely rolling over a bit and adjusting some of the furs into a makeshift pillow

The wolf girl looked at her as she speaks, "Magic...? Magic..." she mumbles a bit as she seemed to be grasping at something else for a bit. Maven was treated to a small scene of the wolf looking at one of its paws. However, it passes and it softly turns towards the human girl who was curling up in her fur bedding. Her tail softly swishes before she lightly crawls over as well and softly curls up alongside Maven. Even without a blanket on, between the thick cloak and the large wolf girl...Even the cold Cave wasn't that bad.

In the morning, it was fairly cold as the wolf girl was gone- off somewhere else. But the odd part was that the shawl she normally wore over the top of her body over the Mage. It wasn't the warmest, but it was cover. Presumably, since this is where she lived, the Wolf girl would be back soon, though. Light came in from outside vaguely inside the cave, though the only 'Light' from in the cave came from the very, very faint light of the chains on the wall.

Half asleep Maven tried to focus on what her wolf companion was doing though it was no use as she missed most of it quickly falling into asleep. In the moments before she reached a deep sleep she could feel the extra warmth of the wolf spooning up next to her as she seemed to have the same idea. She didn't mind it as this was an odd situation as she wasn't a cuddly person and preferred her personal space, but it did help to lull her into a deeper sleep. A sound sleep that lasted through most of the night.

The young Mage woke up stretching a bit as she looked down at the shawl it taking her a few moments to place where it came from. Young her eyes she looked around the cave for the wolf but found that she was alone. She didn't doubt that it had run off since this was it's home and also that the binds were still in place. She sat the desk taking a few sips of water as she read the notes over again hoping to glean some new information now that she was rested. Though it wasn't much use and only provided her with a distraction as she waited for her friend to return. She was tempted to try again but was worried that if the wolf was too far away it would effect the ones on her legs.

Time passed as she waited in the cave. The notes were still semi-coherent as it still missed a lot of essential words in the context. Regardless, the book on binding magic did give her some insight to Contracts. Some were bargains, while others can be much less friendly. If something is weakened or in a state of duress, a less 'fair' contract can be imposed. Cross referencing the notes let her know that Item-Binding Contracts worked as a 1 way contract at worst, and with a single benefit to the contracted, but suffered from a single major limitation- It only allowed up to 3 orders depending on complexity compared to a Living on Living contract, which formed a connection between two people with liquid terms if they agree. Suffice to say, this was not one of those contracts most likely.

However, as she was about to read into it more, she heard the footfalls of the wolf jumping onto the entrance. There was a loud thud before a soft howling of wind. Then the wolf girl comes walking in, traces of blood around the mouth as she held the body of a rabbit- Dead of course. Looking at Maven she silently walks over and holds out the body. "...Hungry...?" she asks.

Maven wasn't sure how much time had passed as she was wrapped up in the notes absorbing all that she could from them. The theory in the books was getting better the more she could piece together. She now had some idea about the details of how she was bound to this place but still couldn't replicated if her life depended on it. Not that she would want to as this seemed to be on the darker side of uses for magic and was a reason the academy was founded to steer young mages down the right path and do good with their skill.

She closed the books as she heard her companion return along with the weather outside which sounded like it hadn't improved much over night. Maven was taken back by the sight of blood around her mouth and the carcass of a rabbit hanging from her jaws. "Umm yes but I think that will only be enough for one of us and i have some rations left. You can keep it.Thank you though. " Maven answered doing her best to politely refuse the meal she was offered. She wasn't squeamish just not good at butchering a freshly killed animal. She pulled out her own food which was now just some dried fruit and a hard piece of bread. "I'm gonna try again once I'm done, if I start early enough today I should be able to make a few attempts in before the sun sets." Maven said taking a small break from her breakfast.

The wolf just nods and takes the carcass in hand and heads over to the place where the bones were piled up. She had her back turned towards Maven, but judging by the placing of the fur to the side, bones to another and other inedible parts, she was prepping it to be eaten. However, her tail swishes back and forth as a bright blue light glows from in front of the wolf and the smell of smoke and cooking meat fills the cave. Tossing a bit of the meat in her mouth, the wolf girl takes the fur and hangs it on one of the stalagmites as she sweeps the bones into the corner as she held meat in her hands, which glowed softly with purple flames that cook the meat in her hand.

Maven turned on the chair now finished with her own breakfast she was curious to see what her companion would do. She watched her easily gut and strip the meat away from the fur and to her shock cook it in her hands. Maven felt a bit bad as she had assumed that the wolf would have eaten it raw but it allowed her to gain some information on her habits. She got up from the seat looking around her as the smell of the meat cooking got her attention a little. But she kept to her word and allowed the wolf to enjoy it.

Once she saw that she was done with her breakfast Maven walked up to the shackles this time staggering her legs a bit to help with the knock back."Alright, I'm gonna try something a little bit different. So stand back and brace yourself." Maven warned as she cupped her hands together this time drawing her entire magic reserve into one ball of intense arcane power. She was only going to aim at one shackle hoping that that could be broken one by one. Or that breaking one would shatter the other one. She released her orb of energy at the top ones and braced herself for the impact that would follow .

The wolf girl eagerly continues to bite into the meat, other claw picking off chunks even while it was cooking in the flames. It didn't take long for her to finish off the morsel and stretch a bit, walking over to sit on her furs to watch Maven as she walks over to the chains once again. Its ears prick up at her words and nods a bit as, while its head stopped hurting, it was now readying for another round of that- even if a part of her wants to attack Maven to stop her from causing more pain to her head, with another telling herself to stop and sit down for the 'medicine', whatever that means.

As the massive arcane ball explodes against the upper chains, they rattle against the rough blast, but with all of it intensified on them, crack, and crack under the pressure...Until a soft rattling trails off from the chains as the two ephemeral chains were visible leading to the wolf girl's front paws and each one goes 'Clink! Clink! Clink! Clink!' as they snap one by one until it reaches the wolf's paws and she jumps lightly as the magic trails up and the metal around her wrists shatters into magic residue. Her head starts to pound once again, whining as she holds onto it. "Pain, pain, pain...!" she whines as she lays on the furs.
