Charlotte was able to dodge Chase, not that she was intentionally trying to, but she was a little nervous that he might be upset that she had told their mother the truth about him and Kate. As soon as their mother had left for work she made her way downstairs and waited until Chase was in the kitchen. She sneaked upstairs to the main floor and darted upstairs to her room. Chase seemed preoccupied with eating breakfast being in so much pain while addressing important issues he needed to. It was still early in the morning, so the first thing Char remembered was to take her birth control and popped out the small circular pill and popped it into her mouth deciding to wash it down with flat pop that had probably been sitting on her desk for quite some time. She realized she needed to do some minor picking up but wanted to take a quick shower. She was somehow lucky her mother didn’t notice she may have reeked of sex? Then again, she really didn’t notice anything.

She took a super quick shower and got changed into a pusheen t-shirt, which was one of her favorite cartoon characters and pulled on some black skinny jeans that hugged her comfortably, she put on some white runner socks and combed out her hair, it had a few tangles in it from her wild night she thought sarcastically. She grabbed all of her trash on her computer desk and put it into her trash can and pulled out the bag, tied it and put it beside her door. She decided to pull of her bedsheets to wash them, she blushed even though nobody was there to witness her reaction. She decided to take off her pillow covers and headed downstairs with her hands full of bedsheets, pillow cases and a bag of trash. She headed into the laundry room and saw Chase must have been doing a load of laundry, it had stopped and was ready to be put into the dryer. She threw the sheets down momentarily while putting his clean laundry into the dryer.

She wouldn’t notice Chase was admiring her as she did the task, quickly pushing her bedsheets into the washing machine, he would have to almost stifle a laugh as she put an extra tide pod in as if two wouldn’t do the job. She yelped noticing him, she didn’t know he was there. She glared at him but it softened.

“You need to eat….”

Charlotte noticed his face looked so bad and it actually hurt her to see him in such a bad shape. She frowned but saw his outfit and was amused. She sighed and walked passed him into the kitchen.

“Don’t be pissed at me…. but I told mom about Kate.” She said and looked up at him, as if waiting for him to explode.

“They’re hosting a super bowl party this weekend and you can’t hide from mom forever…. plus, Kate was shitty to you and out of line….so it only made sense to let her know…” Char said shrugging.

Chase hadn't noticed Charlotte sneak by him and escape to her room. His nose was buried in his phone as he typed away on the small touchscreen, and Char was light on her feet. After a while, he did notice the sound of her shower but decided to stay at the kitchen table and take care of contacting a few more people. He still had to get in touch with the realtor and the bank too, and Chase debated if he should call or just see them in person. He hated talking on the phone and in his current state, it might not be the best idea to see them in person, so he wrote them emails instead. He had just finished typing up an email to his boss when Charlotte came through the kitchen, arms full of the sheets from her bed.

Chase smiled, brief flashes of their lovemaking the past two days coming to mind, and put his phone down on the table. He stood and walked quietly behind his sister, following and watching her switch his laundry over (something he had forgotten to do) and load her own. Char was always so sweet, thinking of others and being helpful, he noted. It would have been easy for her to yell at him to put his clothes in the dryer himself, but she did it for him without complaining. It made his heart flutter the way she cared for him, even when she thought he was unaware.

When Charlotte threw three tide pods into the washer with her sheets, Chase snickered and tried to cover his mouth to stifle the noise. It was cute that she thought that she needed that many after their escapades. The noise he made caused his little sister to jump and yelp, which only made him chuckle again. He smiled in response to her glare, which softened instantly once she realized it was only Chase watching her.

"You need to eat..." Chase said finally, a stern but soft tone with love in his eyes. He moved out of the way when she entered the kitchen without response. He was just about to ask Charlotte what she wanted to eat and if he could make it for her when Charlotte started to speak.

“Don’t be pissed at me…. but I told mom about Kate.”

Her words echoed in his head for a moment and Chase looked at Charlotte with an expression of betrayal in his eyes. Chase was upset that Char had told their mother, he had trusted Charlotte to stay quiet about it, but she had decided to spill the beans anyway. He let out a frustrated sigh as she looked up at him. Chase shook his head, looked away from her, and sat back down at the kitchen table. He leaned his head in his hands and gripped his own hair as his eyes bored holes into the table-top.

He was pissed, not pissed at Charlotte, but pissed at what she did. He listened in silence as she explained why she did, but it didn't change the fact that she had told their mom, without asking him first. He let out another frustrated sigh but didn't look up. Right now he was feeling really hurt that Charlotte had told their mom about the fight, and looking at Charlotte wouldn't ease that. "I..." Chase whispered and took a deep breath. "God Char... I didn't want to worry her..." He huffed, his whole body seeming to sink as he tried to let go of the anger he was feeling. "I mean, I should have been the one to tell her. But you should've asked me before you said anything."

Deep down, Chase knew that Charlotte had only told their mother out of love and worry for him, but it still hurt to have his trust broken like that. That action reminded him of Kate, how she was always supposedly doing and saying things because she knew what was best for him. Kate had never respected the trust that Chase gave her. Chase needed some time to himself to cool down. He didn't want to say or do anything that would further upset either he or Charlotte. Slowly, he got back to his feet and grabbed his phone. He looked at Charlotte for a brief moment, his expression one of deep disappointment in her actions and then left the kitchen quickly to climb the stairs. Chase went straight to the guest room and locked the door behind him. He threw himself onto the bed and let out a sad groan as he started to feel guilty for getting mad at Charlotte. She wasn't anything like Kate, even if she made the mistake of talking to their mother, but her actions still hurt. Chase rolled over onto his side and grabbed the pain-killers and antibiotics that the nurse had given him. He swallowed the pills dry and curled himself into a ball on the bed. The pain-killers made him drowsy almost instantly and soon he was sleeping, still curled in the fetal positions, but his cheeks wet with tears of anger and guilt.

Charlotte watched, gauging Chase’s immediate reaction to the knowledge that she had told their mother about him and Kate, how Kate was abusive and how Chase was suffering minor injuries. He shook his head and let out a sigh and turned away and Char’s head turned down, he was upset, of course he would be. She watched as he walked over the kitchen table and slumped down in the chair, he ran his hands stress-fully through his freshly washed hair, gripping it. He didn’t say anything and wouldn’t face her. Charlotte stood there quietly with a frown, not knowing what to say. She could have continued to argue or give reasons why she was honest but didn’t. Normally she was pretty good at standing her ground, being defensive, challenging Chase, it was part of being the younger sibling but after they were intimately sharing each other, she couldn’t muster of the strength.

It was hard to read between the lines of being siblings and lovers. He finally tried to speak but only said one word, he didn’t want to worry their mother and wished she would have asked him first. He was upset because she had done something behind his back, given out personal information. He mentioned he should have been the one to tell her but the whole thing is he probably wouldn’t have, he was so closed up since being with Kate. Charlotte was even able to piece how much Chase had changed since going away to college and dealing with Kate.

Chase pushed up and stood silently as if debating if he should say anything more but just looked at Char, she could see the disappointment and irritation as he turned to leave the kitchen. She heard him tread up the stairs and heard the soft sound of his door closing. Charlotte was left in the kitchen, alone, defeated with the sounds of the washer and dryer in the background. For some reason it was starting to sink in she had already fucked up. She hadn’t been with Chase three days and she had already did a major fuck up to piss him off. She thought she was doing the right thing because of Chase’s condition. She knew Chase was going take time to heal and his mother would eventually find out.

Char stood there for a few minutes, stuck inside her own head. She was still so emotional from everything that had happened, her and Chase had made love three times, they were together, right? He was her fucking step brother and much older. That alone was a lot to swallow. He invaded her personal privacy and found out her deepest desires, everything. He did things he shouldn’t, but he did because he loved her, she really only did the same thing. Suddenly she didn’t want to here. She had her phone in her pocket and her keys were by the front door hanging up. She jogged upstairs and ran in her room and grabbed a couple quick things and stood, looking at Chase’s closed door. She shook her head and ran back downstairs, locking up she left. She had a pair of sneakers in her hand with a pile of things. She three them in the car, not caring she was just in socks and climbed into her car. She started her car and luckily it was silent, and she pulled out of the driveway and left the house, leaving Chase to rest and deal with his conscious.

She ended up blasting music a little louder on her sound system as she drove through the city, not giving a damn. She had saved and paid good money for a good sound system she was going to use it. She got stares at intersections, but she just kept facing forward. Music was one of the only things she was able to use for coping during her bouts of depression and mood swings. So, she let the heavy music blast as she drove. An hour or so later she found she had driven to her best’s friend’s apartment. Tessa had been her best friend since they were both in kindergarten, she was the only person growing up who knew she had crushed on Chase besides her therapist. They were always close until the end of high school. Tessa had decided to go to a local university which was a city away and got an apartment with a couple of friends. She had begged Charlotte to enroll and move in, but Charlotte was better off at home. She had already texted Tessa and was getting out of the car, catching a fresh breeze at her friend came out of her front door. They hadn’t seen each other in three months and Tessa jumped down the porch, avoiding the steps and ran at Char, she tackled her in a hug against the car. They were like sisters, and for a while Char had crushed on Tessa but never pushed it. She knew Tessa was happy with her boyfriend she had met in junior high and was amazingly still with, Dominic.

Char hugged her friend back tight, already getting emotional. Tessa would already know from her text and her driving to see her, something was wrong. She knew not to force Char, Char was an open book and it would come out. Dominic was standing on the porch, watching. He had also become good friends with Charlotte. He always went out of his way to be best friends with Char, not wanting her to feel left out as all through school, Char was always with them as they were a couple. Tessa had even made him take Char to a couple school dances, so she wasn’t alone as Char had skipped a year so was ahead of Tessa in elementary.

“C’mon on, lets go inside….I ordered food and were baking your favorite cookies.” Tessa said, wrapping an arm around her friend, bringing her up the porch steps. Soon as they got up the porch Char was sniffling, trying not to laugh out as she saw Dominic smirking at her. He had this look that he kept on purposely to make her laugh.

“Fucking quit…” She sniffled, laughing and Dominic pushed off the railing and scooped her off her feet bridal style making her cry out as Tessa laughed. He twirled around with her on the porch and as Tessa opened the door, he entered with her laughing and trying to get out of his arms. That whole scene was just the kind of good friends Tess and Dominic were.

As Chase slept, and not very peacefully at that, he tossed and turned in bed. If Char had been home, she would have heard his moaning and shouting. None of it was intelligible, but it was clear that they were tortured sounds. Even as he slept, his conscience crucified his hypocritical reaction to Charlotte's actions. He only woke from his unrestful nap 3 hours later, long after Charlotte had already left to go to Tessa's, which he was unaware of. Chase was drenched in a cold sweat, his whole chest ached, his head was throbbing, and his throat felt raw. The first thing he did was down some more painkillers, again dry, and slowly sit up so his headache wouldn't get worse. Even his sheets were damp with his sweat, and by now, both the laundries would be done. Chase still didn't really feel like talking to his sister, still feeling bitter about what happened, but now also feeling remorse for acting so coldly after she had admitted what she did. He was feeling a mix of messy emotions himself and the tangle didn't get any smaller after his rest.

It took all his effort and energy to get back on his feet. Chase walked out of the room and back down to the laundry room, his body feeling like it was on auto piolet as his mind continued to try and wrestle with the knot that was his emotions. He pulled out his own laundry and stuffed it back into his backpack, then switched over Charlotte's for her, adding a few extra dryer and fabric softener sheets before running it. He lugged his backpack back upstairs, dragging it on the ground behind him. Chase felt even more exhausted after his nap than before. Again, his feet took him straight back to the guest room. For a moment, his eyes glanced at Char's closed door, but he shrugged and went into the guest room without saying anything. He dumped the clothes from his backpack onto his bed and started sorting his clothes when he noticed his phone was flashing. He had gotten some emails back.

Pausing his laundry folding, Chase reached for his phone and opened up the emails. All the vendors had gotten back to him. The wedding venue said that they would refund his deposit in full, they understood and actually had someone come in after they got his email wanting the venue for the same day. The florists said they would give him half of it back since they hadn't ordered all the flowers yet and hadn't started the arrangments either. The bakers gave him the full deposit back too and offered a coupon for any future services as a condolence. The caters said that they had already spent the deposit, but that Chase could write it off as a donation on his taxes if he allowed them to donate the food they bought to a shelter. The realtor had also replied, she said that she would get back in touch with the other couple and see if they were still interested. All in all, better news than he expected. At least he would get some of his money back and not be in as much debt as he had anticipated. He emailed everyone back individually, thanking them profusely for their kindness and understanding. After that was done, he continued folding his laundry and put it in one of the dressers. It was just in time for the dryer downstairs to buzz that it was done.

Chase got up and retrieved his sister's sheets. He folded them nicely but left them on top of the dryer. He wasn't sure if she was in her room and still didn't feel like much talking, to anyone at the moment. Chase walked into the living room and laid down on the couch. He had left his phone upstairs, but the ringer was on high so if he got any messages he would be able to hear. He turned on the TV and started flipping through the channel absentmindedly. He wasn't really in the mood to watch anything either, but he didn't really want to be stuck with his own thoughts and overwhelming emotions. A little bit of noise and lights from the TV would help to distract him, keep him company that didn't require him to be responsive. He pulled the throw blanket over him, suddenly feeling chilly now that he had dried off a little, and stared at the screen willing his mind to stop thinking.

Another two hours passed and Chase realized that he hadn't heard anything or anyone in the house. It was eerily quiet. Usually, if Char was home there was the sound of the TV in her room or downstairs, or Char was blasting her music or playing video games, something. But the whole house was quiet aside from the TV in front of him. Chase's stomach dropped it occurred to him that Char might have left the house. Had she really been that upset? Trying to ease his worry, Chase walked over to the front door. He unlocked it and looked outside to the driveway only to find that his car was the only one there. Chase began to panic internally. He had really fucked up this time. He had reacted so poorly that Charlotte didn't even want to be in the same house as him. Then his mind flashed back to what he had said and done after she confessed. Charlotte hadn't even tried to argue or reason with him. That was so unlike her unless she was really hurting or upset. Chae swallowed hard and closed the door. His first thought was to call his mom, but he decided against it. He really didn't want to open that can of worms with her yet.

Chase ran up to the guest room and grabbed his phone. No messages or missed calls from Char. He didn't know if that was a good or bad thing at that point yet. His heart was racing as he tried to think of where she would be. Probably not at work or school. Library maybe? Hopefully, she was at her best friend Tessa's house and getting some comfort from her. Chase sat down on his bed and set his phone beside him. He wanted to call or text his little sister but had no idea what to say. He sat on the edge of the bed, twiddling his fingers and hoping that she would contact him soon. Though he made up his mind that if he didn't hear from Charlotte in the next 15 minutes, he would drive over to Tessa's house and look for her. He didn't have Tessa's number, but he remembered picking up Char from her apartment once when Char was too drunk to drive home.

Over the next few hours, Charlotte had word vomit everywhere and had confessed almost to every single thing that had happened in the past few days. That included the sudden break up between Kate and Chase, him moving back home temporarily, him going through her hard drive and reading through her journal and discovering her feelings for him, them confessing they loved each other and sleeping with each other. On top of mentioning how Kate was abusive and she believed Chase had gone through the severe mental and physical abuse from Kate, Kate coming over, making a scene and fucking up Chase…. all the way to her telling her mom and upsetting Chase. By the time she was done both Tessa and Dominic were glued, like two little kids watching a cartoon, like zombies. It didn’t long for both of them to kick up the best friend nurturing mode. They ordered out food and Tessa brought out the desserts she had been preparing. Dominic had brought out some very good tasting Sangria, it was home made and had lots of strawberries on in it.

Charlotte basically gulped down a glass in seconds and Dominic winked and poured her another glass and put the picture of it close. They didn’t really talk about what had happened, they just let Char vent and then decided, dinner, alcohol, dessert and goofing around would be the best medicine. Tessa had known Charlotte for so long and what she didn’t need was someone telling her what to do with so much complex drama happening, especially between her and Chase. Tessa was surprised it had happened but not as surprised as you might think. Tessa always realized how very close Chase and Char were while they were growing up, she almost even caught Chase at times giving odd stares she would almost think were more than platonic but never mentioned it. She didn’t want to give Charlotte false hope when she had gone through some severe periods of dealing with it.

It didn’t take to long before all of them were a little tipsy and laughing hysterically at anything. Although it was good to see how adorable Char was while laughing so hard, her stomach hurt, and she felt like she had to pee. Charlotte had stumbled into the bathroom, still laughing, but was able to go to the bathroom. She could hear Tessa putting on music and a well-known song they all liked started playing. Char rolled her eye’s while finishing. She came out of the half bath downstairs and could hear the loud music. She could see both Dominic and Tessa dancing, making her laugh. Dominic had his phone camera on and Tessa lip synced while dancing. They moved into the kitchen as Tessa spun around leaning into Char, while still pretending to sing. Char was laughing, almost snorting but tried to keep a straight face….

“I mean we can throw shapes together, but it doesn’t mean you’re in my circle”

giphy.gif

Charlotte started lip syncing and dancing back to back with Tessa, Dominic screamed out laughing while encouraging them. Char started dancing while closing in on Dominic as he filmed her lip singing perfectly, acting smug as she dances and threw her shoulders and hair back, spinning, managing not to fall over while still keeping her balance. Tessa was laughing, leaning against the counter as Char was on a role. She was uploading this, she didn’t care how bad Char begged her not to….Char was to cute not to on camera.

Even though there had been lots of good news Chase had gotten over the past few hours, he still felt like total and utter crap, both emotionally and physically. His face and head were aching, his chest tight, and his heart felt like it was torn in too. The realization that he may have just driven his sister, a girl he loved more than anything, away, made him feel sick to his stomach. Usually, he was so much more composed, at least when it came to anger or sadness. He had learned that as a guy, it was better to act stoic or unfeeling instead of sad or upset. It was always harder to do it around Charlotte, but even more so now. Now that they had become intimate, shared their hidden feelings, and entered a romantic and sexual relationship, nothing was easy anymore. Everything was more complicated. More intense. It was good, but now he was seeing the downsides of it.

Chase waited for a few more seconds after he sat on his bed before sending off a text to his sister. "I'm sorry. Are you okay?" It was simple, blunt, and to the point. There was a lot more he wanted to say to Charlotte, but right now his head was all over the place and he couldn't form the thoughts into words. The guilt he was feeling for upsetting his sister so much that she left without saying anything was getting worse. Mixed with the compounding general stress and anxiety that had been brewing inside him since even before the breakup between him and Kate and all of the other things he had to deal with due to the split only added to the flurry of intense feelings and emotional turmoil. Suffice it to say, Chase was a mess before, but he was even more of a mess now. Each second that passed where he didn't get a response from Char made him feel even more anxious. Chase got to his feet and began to pace back and forth next to his bed. His eyes glued to the screen with the conversation between him and Char open as he waited with baited breath for her reply.

Meanwhile, Charlotte, Tessa, and Dominic were having a blast. They were getting buzzed, laughing, dancing and singing like good friends do. It seemed like Char had completely forgotten about the fight. Dominic seized the opportunity in front of him and started to film the two attractive girls dancing and lip syncing to the music that blared in the apartment. Both Tessa and Charlotte were attractive young women and Dominic enjoyed capturing them letting loose and having fun together. He followed the girls around the house and couldn't help but laugh and encourage the girls to keep going. The mix of upbeat music, sangria, and Tessa's positive attitude were distracting Char from what had happened hours ago.

Charlotte's phone was sitting on the counter next to Tessa. Dominic was still filming when he head the buzz. He walked over to the counter, acting like he was just moving to get a different angle, and peaked at the phone. He saw Chase's name pop-up on the screen and the text. Without letting Charlotte see him, Dominic poked Tessa's thigh and motioned at the phone with one hand. He mouthed the word 'Chase' and gave his girlfriend a look that said 'What do you want to do?' Tessa knew Charlotte just a little bit better than he did, so he would trust her judgment.

Tessa had gotten the hint from Dominic and she discreetly, while still laughing was able to slyly move over to the counter to look at the message from Chase. Tessa knew Chase must be worried and if everything was happening that Charlotte just confessed then it was only right to let her know, it be shitty not too and Tessa knew Chase would probably end up driving over regardless, it was better to have him somewhat calm instead of speeding and possibly getting hurt. Tessa picked up the phone and handed it to Char, letting her know to look it. Char did and immediately her facial expression changed from happy and hyper to concerned and quiet. Suddenly all that could be heard was the loud music, but Dominic turned it down as Char was looking at her phone, contemplating what to say. She even looked to Tessa, and Tessa gave her a half-hearted smile, shrugging.

“Just call him…. he’s worried. He loves you…. he’s more worried about you than being mad, I’m sure.” Tessa said, and Char nodded as if agreeing. She took her phone, sighed and walked into the living room and collapsed on the couch. She was buzzing, and her head felt really hot, but she dialed him. He must have picked up within seconds of even the first ring and she knew he must have been anxiously waiting by the phone. She didn’t even have time to respond but heard him apologizing and anxious to know if she was alright.

“…...I’m fine, I’m safe…I’m with Tessa.” She tried to keep her voice on one level, but it wouldn’t be heard for Chase to figure out sooner or later she was a little drunk. “I was just stressed and thought I fucked up earlier…everything’s been overwhelming…. I’m really sorry for pissing you off. I just…. thought I was helping…” She sighed, leaning over, letting one hand brush through her hair.

Only a few minutes had passed since Chase sent the text, but already he was starting to panic that she wouldn't reply. He made his way downstairs and was putting on his shoes when his phone began to ring. Immediately, he stood up and pulled his phone from his pocket, letting out a huge sigh as he saw Charlotte's name on the screen. As soon as her phone picks up the call, Chase was rambling on, apologizing for his reaction and driving her away. "Char, I'm sorry. I over-reacted. I was acting like a huge jerk. I fucked up. Are you okay? Where are you?" His words were rushed and full of emotion.

Finally, he paused long enough for Charlotte to get some words in. She assured him that she was okay. She was with Tessa and safe. Another sigh left his lips and he listened as Char explained herself. There was something off about the way she was speaking though. Her words were a little slurred, very slightly, but Chase noticed. Her tone also wavered just the slightest bit. "I overreacted. You were just being a good sister. And I was being a hypocrite." He replied, sitting back down on the floor and putting his head in his free hand.

He sat quietly for a minute, debating whether he wanted to ask the next question. "Char, have you been drinking?" Chase tried his best to keep the judgment from his voice. She was old enough to drink and had every right to after what he had put her through, but that didn't stop him from being a concerned older brother. "Do you need me to pick you up or..." He paused. "Or are you going to stay the night with Tessa?" Chase had a feeling he knew the answer. He had been spending almost every waking moment he could with Charlotte and she probably felt suffocated. And after having their first fight, he wouldn't blame his little sister for wanting to have some space, real space, and time away from him to breath. "Just so I can tell mom and dad when they get home..." He added quickly, wanting to mask his disappointment that she might not come home that night.
