Nai'lo is the youngest surviving female child of six from the third section of the second web of the Tuin family, or in human terms her great grand mother is Matron, her grand mother is the second surviving heir of said matron and her mother is the third surviving heir of that side of the family - and she has five sisters directly above her in the pecking order. In short as nobles go she has a long way to climb - fortunately she feels she has plenty of time to make this climb.
Her family has a number of priestesses including three of her sisters and her mother, but it was decided she would adopt different studies to ensure versatility - and to oversee some of the male housemembers who were gaining to much power in trading roles - a task she settled into well, or at least better then her immediately elder sister. She learned from her eldest brother Paelias that while the males accepted there place they were still drow and would not suffer for anothers incompetence willingly - Nii'la died within a week crushed and eaten by a troll that a slave had not secured properly. Paelias and Nai'lo watched the entire thing occur not two hours after Nii had tried to put Paelias - a male but with two centuries more experience than her - in his place, Nai got the message. She could be a figurehead and claim credit for smooth operations - or she could be a corpse.
Once the initial understanding was in place Paelias did adopt the role of mentor well, explaining discipline, work ethic, reward etc - a capable bard he trained her in some of the mystical arts to assist her in understanding proper management. Masquerading as a slave and listening to them speak could go a long way to avoiding riots before they occurred.
The family business was slaves, mining, goods and magic - and business was good, Paelias kept things running smoothly and Nai kept the rest of the family appeased. Unfortunately the good times were not to continue forever, a mind flayer slave broke its bonds and attacked her mind a gnome fearing retribution from the drow on all slaves killed the creature but Nai was in a deep coma like trance. Her dreams filled with an old library where she seemed to spend her years, a dream that has haunted her since both waking and sleeping.
Awaking a week later she found the gnome being tortured as none believed his story of helping her but they did accept that he had killed a prize slave, Paelias vengeance was harsh as he for the first time in years had to deal with his more experienced sisters - and worse his mother looking at his operation. Nai however had a different reaction having the Gnome healed and speaking to them in depth she than spoke to Paelias and he agreed reluctantly that freeing the creature may help morale with the workforce - and may allow new opportunities for trade.
A spectacle of freeing the gnome - Warryn - was undertaking - and after his begging his family were also released to him (officially as his personal slaves released on credit). Surprisingly - for Paelias at least - the svirfneblin was as good as his word, opening new trade for the operations and paying back his debt for his family. Having secured this new pathway for goods Paelias finally began over a few years to look at his youngest sister with some small measure of respect - and this was where the problems started.
Paelias now seeing her becoming something of a rival instead of a minion or partner choose to test her resolve and abilities - he poisoned to knock her out her and sold her to a rival distant house, choosing not to kill her likely for his own reasons as a potential weapon against her sisters should she survive. His last words to her as she fell off her chair were 'thus begins the last test you have as a child - I do hope you don't die' his grin inscrutable.
Now ten days later she find herself a slave to drow she has not been in contact with, surrounded by slave races and having to plot her escape and return to the life she deserves.
