Office Romances don't work...do they? (Nightstalker x Candi)

"And I appreciate that," she said with a smile. "But I would never push you away like that. If I want to be alone, I'll tell you. I promise." She smiled and ruffled his hair a bit again. She kissed him again before, she started the car and drove them back to work. Things were a bit awkward now. He wouldn't let it go, and it was making her nervous. Did he really think that she would just leave him? Or was that prior experience talking again?

Chris was going to stay silent for the reminder of the day, back at work he left the car and walked across towards the lifts. Pressing the button he waited, his mind constantly turned as flashbacks to his last relationship surfaced. Just out of college his looks and charm had been what she wanted, once a new toy boy arrived at work he was discarded with a bad leaving card from her. Shaking his head he knew it could not happen or could it.

Claire spent most of the day worrying about Chris when she wasn't working--even when she was. Unable to focus, she took a break and returned a few minutes later. She knocked on Chris's door a little box in her hand and a smile on her face. Hopefully, he would appreciate what she had to give to him.

Chris worked long and hard, his mind concentrating solely on his work and did not hear the knock at the door as he was so engrossed in getting the work done. Having taken two more assignments as well he could almost already feel her long heels in his ass as he left the office if he did not do enough. Shaking his head at the huge mistake on the screen he quickly edited and started to run the spell check on it. Standing and stretching he walked across to the door and opened it, his eyes meeting hers. His words stammered out. "Um Hi..."

She smiled. "Hi yourself. Did you hear me knock? Or was it too soft?" She frowned a little when she saw he looked a bit flustered. "Can I come in?" she asked.

Chris smiled into her eyes his feet moving away from the door to allow her to enter, all of a sudden almost shy around her again he spoke. "Sorry was concentrating on getting this piece done perfectly before tomorrow. Please do."

"Awww, well don't forget to take breaks now and then." She came in and went to sit on his desk again. "I brought you something that I hope makes you feel better."

Chris barely heard the first few words, his mind still on tomorrow. He might even work all night to make sure it was all done. Semi - closing the door over he spoke softly as he moved back towards his desk. "Will take another break later, a gift?"

"Well, probably not the kind that you're thinking of. I needed some fresh air, so I went for a little walk, and I brought you this," she said softly. She handed him a little box full of the cake they'd had that first day. She handed him a fork and kissed his lips gently. "I know it's not much, and that you're preoccupied with something, but I thought maybe it would make you smile again."

That said, she frowned and looked down. "I hope it's nothing I did."

Chris listened to her words, his feet stopping mid step as his eyes moved from the box with the cake up to hers. Not sure if anyone was watching or not he wanted and need to play it slightly safe. His fingers caressing hers as he took the box with one hand. His other hand lightly brushing one strand of her hair back as he spoke in a whispered tone. "Claire no you have not, thank you for this."

She nodded, though she could feel her eyes stinging a little because she didn't know what was wrong. She put on a small smile, sad as it may have looked. She let him play with her hair a little longer before she shook her head. "Don't over do it, Chris. You're only human.

Chris listened to her words as he put the box down, his hands moving to hold her close as his lips moved down one cheek to the corner of her mouth. His words only audible to her. "Cheer up Claire please. You have absolutely done nothing wrong."

"Even if you say that, how am I supposed to believe it if you won't tell me what's wrong?" She snuggled into his shoulder for a moment before pulling away at the sound of foot steps. "I guess now isn't really a good time, huh? Take a break, eat some cake." She smiled and rubbed his shoulder before she started on her way out. It was hard to imagine that just a few hours ago the situation had been entirely different.

Chris heard her words and the footsteps, frowning he watched her start to leave his office. Putting the cake he spoke "Claire please stay and I will try to explain more."

Claire stopped just short of the door and turned back to him, curious as to what he had to say. She closed the door and quietly clicked the lock into place before coming back to his side, waiting patiently to hear him out. After all, he deserved that much from her. She stood a few feet away from him, feeling a bit empty now that she wasn't holding him.

Chris watched her stop and not just close the door but lock it. Eyes staying transfixed on her as she approached him, his heart felt empty that he could not hold her but would she feel it. Glancing just past her he moved to sit on the desk, his arms open as gesture for her to come closer as he softly spoke. "Claire my first job after college did not end well, also my first relationship that I really enjoyed. My boss wanted me but when another man entered the workplace who was slightly hotter in looks I was fired but told my work standards had dropped below par. Not saying this will happen just scared is all if you can understand that."

Claire came closer to him, sitting in his chair as he told her the story. She couldn't help but feel a little angry at him for lumping her in with such a slut, but she understood that he was afraid of that happening again. "Is that all that happened? You fell for your boss and she left you for someone else? Or is there more to the story? Tell me what happened to you," she said, frowning.

Chris could feel that she was angry with him, he did not blame her as he listened to her words. Moving a little closer he pushed the box aside and opened his laptop back up. Opening several folders with a few quick touches on different keys there showed more information on what she had done along with another boss of his. They had recorded everything he had done at work, then used it against him. "Claire these pictures tell a little more but feel that I should pack up the rest of my belongings and leave here."

Now, she really was angry. She saw the pictures on the screen and wanted to punch something. So this was what he'd been so afraid of. And what was it with him falling for his boss? Then again, why wouldn't he? Clearly, they were beautiful, intelligent women. Too bad they were all snakes. She closed the laptop and calmly looked at him, though it was clear that she was pissed.

"First of all, I think I should make it clear to you that I'm not in the habit of sleeping with employees, nor do I just crawl into bed with any good looking man that happens to come my way. You are the first exception to either of those rules, and I didn't just sleep with you because you were handsome. You were charming and sweet, and you care about what you do."

She glared at him and turned her back, taking a few steps before turning back to him. "Secondly, What have you done here that I can blame you for? So far, you've been very dedicated to your work, and you've met every deadline I threw at you. What more can I ask for?" She felt her eyes stinging again.

"And finally, what hurts the most is that you can't have enough faith in me to be different. I love you, damnit. What do I have to do to prove that to you? Move in? Clearly not, because you won't accept that decision, but you can just ask things like that of me at a moment's notice. Do you want me there? I don't know anymore. What am I supposed to do?" She frowned at him and slapped his face. "Eat your damn cake. Call me when you're ready to talk to me, and not some amalgamation of the women who betrayed you." That said, she stormed off to the door and unlocked it, ready to leave.

Chris knew it had been idea the moment he had opened his mouth today, no matter what came out of it nothing good was coming to his way. Her mood was now foul, he was almost shaking like a leaf on an autumn day. Listening to her words he could feel not just hatred but betrayal in her voice. Why oh why had his past come back to haunt him so much today, seemed like it had been planned almost. Each of her footsteps around the room made him more nervous, like a child going to see the principal before getting detention. The last of her words, the frown on her face caught him off guard, the slap to his face may as well have been a kick in the nuts. It hurt the same, in fact everything did. His eyes now stinging, tears rolling down his cheeks watched her walk towards the door. This time he moved from the desk and moved to sit behind his desk, a few short key strokes later he was back at his work page.

Not looking up nor caring about the cake for now he was determined to not just get the latest piece done but another 10 before tomorrow morning came. He would work all night and not sleep. After tomorrow morning he figured that his brief stay here would be over, no matter what he did really but at least he was going to try to do more. Hard work was what he needed to do, tonight she could have the extra time and yes she had been pushed into the decision by him asking her so soon. His head moved from the desk, turning he smashed repeatedly against the nearby filing cabinet, blood droplets pooling and running down one side of his face.

Claire threw herself into her work, completely blocking him out of her mind. It was ten o'clock before she looked up and decided that she needed a break. She got up and stretched. Now would be a good time to go home. She frowned and saved all of her work, taking her laptop home in a bag with her. She was just heading out of her office for the night when she saw light leaking out from Chris's office. Maybe she had been too harsh...but she had been hurt and angry. She had been entitled. But she hated to see him so sad.

She decided to see if he was still upset. Feeling guilty, the redhead knocked on the door, loudly this time so that he would hear her. They had to be the only two people left in the building besides the custodians and security.

Chris managed to stem the flow of blood from his head where had cut it open, his mind going semi blank at various times during the next few hours. Jolted from almost the last paragraph on his 5th assignment by a knock at the door he wondered if security wanted him to leave already. Fingers finished off the last of the piece saving it and having it sent to her email already along with the others as he spoke softly. "Yes the door is open, you can enter."

"Hey," she said as she came into the room. Of course, the first thing that she'd noticed was the fact that he'd been bleeding. She rushed to him, her eyes wide with worry. "Oh my God, what happened? Are you alright?" Claire was at his side in mere seconds, moving his hair aside to get a better look at the cut. Her eyes met his as if demanding an answer as she set her things down on the floor and knelt before him.

Chris had begun to work on his next piece when the door opened, her footsteps were the first thing he heard moving quickly across the carpeted floor. Hearing her words and meeting her eyes he tentatively reached out and lightly touched her cheek, his eyes still red from earlier, face a mess as he spoke. "Claire I did it myself for hurting you. Please go home and get some sleep."

"You...you what?" Her words were barely above a whisper. "Idiot!" she put her arms around him and held him close to her. Claire looked at him and took his face into her hands. "Stay right there. I'm going to get a first aid kit." That said, she ran out of his office. He'd hurt himself because he'd hurt her first? What could he have been thinking?! She had been hurt, but it was no reason to harm himself even more than she had done to him. She got the kit and came running back. She set it on his desk and opened it, pulling out a pair of latex gloves, a few cotton swabs and some antibacterial spray.

She focused immediately on fixing his head and cleaning him up. He really was a mess that needed to be tended to. "You're not staying here tonight. You're coming with me, understood?" Clearly, she wouldn't take no for an answer.
