Shade, milk of the coconut, and a blessed sip of real water, even though it tasted flat and dead from the perfectly pure plastic bottle helped Asta calm down if not quite come around. What she needed was more water, craved it with an intensity that overrode everything but whenever she reached for it the bottle was never there. It came in drips and sips, interspersed with the thick, rich sweet coconut milk, and Asta couldn't get enough of either. It was so frustrating but she was too weak to hold onto the bottle of the husky brown shell and when she did get a grip on one a strong hand, one softer and smaller than the other, would firmly remove Asta's from it.
Still, it was cooler, much cooler, in the shade and she had the comfort of Giulia's lap and soft body along with her soothing voice and gentle touches. Asta settled down and went into an on again, off again cycle of sleeping and being almost awake when more liquid was offered to her. Instinct made her body curl up into a fetal position and if it had only smelled like the inside of a reindeer hide yurt-like tent fueled by a dry reindeer dropping fire, it could have been how she and her people spent much of the darkest, coldest days of winter, huddled in a communal pile an near hibernation, waking only to drink a little and tend the fire before dozing off again.
She just wished someone would stop making the fire so hot.
"Lopeta polttoaineen lisääminen tulipaloon. Se on liian kuuma," she murmured in a wakeful moment but didn't stir to act on whatever her words meant. Her only action was to reach out and take Giulia's hand in her own, then pull it down under her head like a pillow, their fingers still intertwined.
