He could not deny the truth in her words. Though as much as he would like to say it was the opposite he knew the other nobles did not share his view on how servants should be treated. He had seen the cruelty men could act upon those they called their lesser and if it had not been for his mother teaching him differently he was sure he would have turned out like his father and just as bad as the rest of them. When he was king he would change things, this he promised.
He wanted to help her, but every option seemed close even with all his power. His thoughts of buying her, of bringing her to work in the castle were a fools errand. The gossip and rumors would spread like wildfire, saying she was a whore for the prince. The noble women would taunt her and his father might...well, he didn't want to think about that.
He wanted to tell her the truth, who he was, what he wanted to do, but knew that would only cause more trouble. Before she could disappear from him he took her hand in his own and looked her in the eye with all his sincerity. "Things will get better for you, I promise."
