This was fucked. Leo had a difficult time keeping his eyes forward because the pulling desire to look behind him at Lana and make sure that she was not hurt kept nagging at him. They were two, maybe three corridors away from escaping. On an adjacent hallway, he heard a group of running footfalls towards the security room. He heard one man shout out “that old dude and his girl” in the server room. Well, they were long gone now. The only bad thing was knowing that they were missing from that room meant all the bad guys were going to look throughout the mansion for Leo and Lana. Thankfully, this big ass mansion had so many hiding spots and Leo learned them all in the brief time he was offered this job. Suddenly, a set of footfalls turned down this particular hallway so Leo pushed his daughter into one of the rooms to their left. It was some old storage closet with items that must have collected dust for decades. He pulled her towards one of the corners to take cover behind some old, metal boxes.
He heard Lana gasp and stop in her tracks. “Lana, get in-“ He paused when his eyes fell upon the same thing hers did. It was a dead body in the corner. The older woman from earlier had been bludgeoned to death with something. Her head was cracked open and blood oozed out, coating their shoes and Leo’s boots. He did not want Lana to look at this for one second longer so he pulled his daughter towards the opposite corner to take cover and hoped these people did not check inside this room again. Huddled in the corner, Leo was much closer with his daughter than ever before. The urge to wrap his arms around her and say that he loved her was growing but he knew to keep his hands on the gun and his attention forward. There would be plenty of time later to smother her in love and affection. Now, it was about surviving.
Footsteps stopped outside the door and Leo clutched the handgun tighter. The door opened slowly and Neo aimed the barrel at the multiple voices entering the room. However, in a stroke of dumb luck, gunshots from the other side of the house sounded and one of the men shouted through a radio that they needed help. The men inside this room quickly left, leaving the door wide open, running back through the hallway towards the distress call, sending a sigh of relief through Leo’s lips.
“Come on, baby girl. Let’s get out of here.”
