And to touch on what TDM brought up. For me the masochism is almost a type of therapy. We were rear-ended by a semi and I had a 1/4 steel seat spring perforate my lower back and nick my spine when I was 14. Since then, sensation to my back and arms have been limited and my lower body has a high level of sensitivity. I greatly enjoy a good beating and on a night when I get a good work-over, I usually have the whole "pins and needles" sensation (akin to when a limb "falls asleep" due to lack of circulation) in my shoulders and arms. That is the most I've been able to feel other than mild pressure and heat since the accident.

That and it's a lot of fun, the people in the fetish community are absolutely some of the greatest people I have ever met and while the lifestyle they have may seem extreme to some, they are also some of the least judgmental people you will ever come across. How easy it is for those outside to claim that it's freakish or weird when, in all reality, we're exploring the limits of our own senses and boundaries. You never can truly know your limits if you aren't willing to push yourself beyond where you think you can go.
