Jorie Lajore

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"10:45, I have fifteen minutes till I have to be home." Soft foot steps could be heard as seventeen year old Jorie Lajore walked down the street. She was just on her way home from a party....a party she shouldn't have gone to. Out of everyone there only two or three people actually spoke to Jorie, everyone else, treated her like a reject.

The main reason behind their cruelness is because of her style, yes she may go to a private school, but the school was nothing special. Everyday Jorie showed up with either a piece of the uniform missing, or a new piece to the uniform. Because of those actions Jorie became the outcast, except for the few friends she has.

As she turned a corner for the next street she looked up, there they were, the teens from school, who had nothing better to do than pick on her. Swallowing she quickly crossed the street and walked down the other side. Shaking her head she acted as if she wouldn't see them.

They saw her....

"Lajore, Halloween is over. What's your problem anyway?"

That's when the group of four boys and two girls advanced to her side of the street. Cornering her.

Jorie stared at them her green eyes taking them all in as she backed up into the wall. No....oh god....not again....She thought.

Kinny had trailed her all night, being that insistant little voice she more often than not ignored. His job was special, he had been charged with the task of watching over this young woman, her guardian angel.

As she left the party he was overjoyed, he knew it was because she had to be home before her parents, but it still gave him some peace of mind.
He followed close behind her, an invisible shadow, watching her every little move.
He'd been doing more of that lately, 'Okay for a while.' he'd thought.

they turned a corner and he saw them, "Cross the street.' He'd wispered, she did, he didn't know why he felt the need to remind her, she already had that instinct.
Unfortunatly, they saw her anyway, before long she was backed up against a wall.
Kinny knew he had to do something, but what? he'd dealt with the bullies by allerting nearby teachers, but here, she was alone.

Jorie eyed them all. Cursing at herself mentally for going to the party, she should have known these guys would be out and about, putting on a fake smile she smiled at each of them "Come on....leave me alone." she knew it was a pitiful attempt to get away from this group but it was an attempt all the same.

"Aw, did you hear that? Little Lajore wants to be left alone....."
"Lajore you bring this on yourself you know that right?"
"You're such a freak"

The taunts hit Jorie like blades. Each of them saying something, she had heard so many times 'Stand up to bullies. They Back down when someone bigger, better and smarter comes along.' Jorie tried that once, she got a nice black eye out of it. Seeing an opening beside the wall and one of the guys she moved towards it quickly.

His arm struck out blocking the exit.

"And where do you think you're going Lajore!" Bradly, a typical prep school jock jerk moved in closer with every word. "We're not done talking with you yet."

Kinny closed in behind Brad yelling for him to stop, he pleaded with the others, but all his words fell on deaf ears.

"You know what, you probably wouldn't look so bad without these clothes. Probably." He ran his hand along her cheek and onto her throat, and started into the top of her shirt. "What do you think guys? Should we find out?" Cheers came from the others in the group as bradly stared his prey down.

Kinny felt himself welling up with rage, yet as he was all he could do was watch.

Matt, yet another prep school jock, the one who put his arm out laughed, watching the whole thing happen. "Careful there Bradly, she might cast some spell on you" the two girls laughed.

The two girls and two other guys formed a circle trapping Jorie in the middle of it with Bradly. Jerking away from his touch Jorie went to move away from him, only to have one of the other guys shove her back forward.

"For god's sake....leave me alone. What did I do to you guys?" Jorie asked wishing for a miracle.

The two girls scoffed at Jorie.

"Wow, you really are stupid" One of the girls muttered with a wave of her manicured hand.

Kinney bolted forward as Jorie was pushed. He didn't notice he'd become visible as he rushed into the group and got between Jorie and Brad. "Leave here alone!" He yelled. Brad actually backed up a little and Kinny was surprised. He looked at them all and they all were staring at him.
His face turned stern and he backed closer to Jolie, using himself and the wall to keep the others from her. "Just leave. I don't want to hurt you." He warned.

Matt blinked in shock then shook his head he spoke quickly "Guys let's just go, we can get her at school or something." He grabbed one of the girls from the groups arm and yanked her down the street with him. The other girl looked then followed quickly, the two males nodded following as well.

Jorie gasped Where did this guy come from? she thought. She peeked out from behind him to see some of them leave she looked towards Bradly. She swallowed waiting to see what he would do.

The two stared eachother down for a few minutes, and Kinny broke the silence first. "Just you and me, Bradly." He said. "You sure you want to make a move, or do you want to handle this the smart way." He acted like he pulled something from his pocket keeping his palm out of view from the quarterback. Bradly's eyes followed the motion and he looked Kinny in the face, he thought it was a bluff but the punk's eyes and face were cold. "Last chance, Brad."

Jorie watched from behind Kinny's back, she still didn't know who he was, but she felt like she knew him. Her eyes switching between the two, trying to figure who would back down first....her eyes went back to Kinny, she was trying to figure where he had come from. Why does this guy seem familiar? Where did he come from? her mind began to think as she watched him closely.

Brad gave Kinny one last look over and steeped back. "You're not worth my time." He looked at Jolie. "You lucked out you little bitch!" He spat before jogging away to catch up with the others.

When Kinny was sure that they wouldn't be back he gave the young woman some room. "Are you alright?" He asked, still tense and seeming to be holding something, yet he sounded genuinely concerned for her. "Did they hurt you?"

Jorie winced at his words, why they stung she didn't know. But she was happy when she saw him leave. She then looked back at Kinny. She still had no clue who he was. "I...yes, I'm fine, now." She tilted her head as she added. "No...who, are you?" she asked him eying him closely, wondering where he came from and why she felt as if she knew him.

He stared at her a moment, still in a bit of shock that she could see him. "Uh... Kinny, Kinny McKensey. A pleasure to meet you." He didn't use her name. It might startle her, and the incident she'd just had definetly put her on edge some. Kinny himself was still a little wary. "Would you like me to walk you home?" He asked straightening up and smiling a little.

Jorie blinked still confused as to what just happened. "Kinny....nice name." she said slowly as she looked away from him to look around she then blushed at his question. "If I accept, can you tell me where you came from? You just appeared all of a sudden." she looked at him, just what she needed a very good looking guy, saves her and she has no clue where he came from....perfect...

Her question almost made him laugh, he doubted anyone would believe the truth so he decided to go with something more believable. "I was sleeping in those bushes." He pointed across the road. "Figured it was better than crashing in the park. Anyway..." He trailed off and gave her a smile. "So, how about it? Can I walk you home now?"

Something about the way he said it, didn't quite, she never heard the bushes make a sound nor did she see them move, he just appeared. "Try me." she said challenging him to tell her the truth. Of course she wanted to know the truth. The truth will set you free. Is what her mother always told her least.

She tilted her head, not moving at all.

She wasn't buying it. He looked up and seemed to think hard about it for a second. "Well." He looked right at her, into her eyes, with enough conviction in his manner to seem as if he was looking into her. "I'm dead." He disn't even smirk, no waver in his voice anything. Kinny just awaited her response, if she would laugh or if she would understand the gavity of the truth.

Jorie stared at him for a moment. Shaking gently she licked her lips. Should I be scared? She swallowed sharply and blushed. She looked away from him. Trying to figure it all out.

Kinny smiled, she looked cute when she was nervous. "You wanna know how I died and why I'm here? Or do you think I'm just a nut." He said, humor in his voice.

Jorie jumped slightly and blushed, pulling her bottom lip in between her teeth she shook her head she didn't think he was a nut and said "How you died and why you're here." she glanced around then found a clock seeing the time she cursed. "I'm late...." she looked around then at him. "Tell me on the way? I have to hurry." she started waking ahead of him, she couldn't wait to see if he following she prayed he would follow. But she needed to get home. Or be in serious trouble.

He nodded. "Sure." He let her get ahead a little bit, not because he had to, he just wanted to watch her walk for a few moments. He sped up then matched her pace. "Well, which do you want to know first?" he asked, the image of her swaying hips still lingering in his mind.

"How you died. I guess..." she said As Jorie walked she stumbled over a piece of the lifted sidewalk, she noticed something the little voice she always heard in her head, but ignored wasn't there. She bit her lip in concentration as she walked quickly looking around. One more corner and she'd be at home. Turning sharply, she stumbled on something she didn't know what it was. "God..." she muttered as she looked at him then shrugged. She moved quickly looking up as she saw her two story home, walking around the side of it, she reached the balcony that was near her bedroom window. She was so accustomed to hearing the voice in her head, say "Be careful," or "Are you sure you want to do that?" she stared up at the attached ladder and tilted her head. Wondering where the little voice was.

He was just starting to answer when she stumbled, he instinctivly reached for her, but she managed to keep herself standing. he started to speak again yet was stopped when she once again stumbled. 'Wow, I'm really not doing my job.' He thought and before he knew it they were standing in her yard by her balcony. "You sure you want to do that?" He asked, knowing full well what she was planning on. "Just be careful." He added without really thinking. It was his job after all.

Jorie spun around to stare at him, her eyes wide. Why did that sound familiar. She tilted her head and said "Skip the first one....why are you here?" she asked thinking she knew the answer but could be mistaken. She moved backwards and eyed him carefully. If he was the voice she always heard, he'd know she always slipped somewhat when she was on the balcony and standing on the railing reaching for her window. She may be thin and very flexible but she was a klutz.

Turning her back to him she quickly climbed the ladder and stepped onto the balcony.

He actually stepped back a little when she spun around. More from surprise. "Uum, okay. Guardian angel." It came out slow and unsure at first, but picked up confidence. He just didn't know if she should be hearing this. "You're guardian angel." He said flatly. He followed her up the ladder and even prepaired to catch her if she slipped, again. "I could explain the rest some other time i guess. I mean, you might need to let this sink in, huh?" He said climbing up after her ready to follow her in through the window.

At his words, Jorie swallowed and slipped, her foot hit the edge of the balcony behind the railing, a scream tore from her as she grabbed the railing with her hands, knuckles turning white. Her foot had hit the outside edge of the balcony when she slipped and now she dangled from the railing of the balcony, above the ground, tears smarted in her eyes.
