Elaya filled the hall. She smiled very sweetly at him, but made it clear she did not appreciate his brusqueness. "Jeziah put her down. You will tell me what you plan to do before you take her anywhere."
She had only met the male Phoenix twice but she never forgot a scent.
Behind her Narxis and Drea had gotten the children and the adults out of the house and down in the barn, where Rey stood guard over them, watching the house, while the other two had moved to support Elaya.
Elaya still had her hands up in a placating gesture. "You really ought to put her down quickly. Before-oh dear-"
Sera was whipped out of his arms and back into bed. Elaya gripped his shoulders before he could get upset. "Forgive me but she needed rest. But she's stubborn. Insisted on cooking. So I had Gerry put a binding spell on her and the bed. I need a moment to undo it."
It was a cheap bluff but it had worked. She needed to remember to thank Narxis for that little bit of trickery. The demon winked at her through a window.
The kittens wriggled into Sera's hair and began to purr, taking no notice of Jeziah. Elaya squeezed his arm. "Seriously. Just tell me what you need to do after you let me by. Gerry makes his spells really simple."
