Colliding Worlds (BurningWillows & Greeneyed23)

Elaya snickered. "No Kai. She said you are getting better. I know for a fact she prefers..." She heaved a great sigh, making her full breasts rise and swell impressively against Sera's back and arm. "More seasoned hair."

She grinned wickedly then kissed Sera's neck. "And also hair that doesn't look like it's just been licked into place by a mother cat."

Drea laughed that his barb and Elaya let him be as she nibbled Sera softly and whispered. "Adore you Seraphina."

Gerry sighed noting Tatia withdraw upon herself. She needed someone. A real connection. Like what the others had. He wondered at that actually. The only one who lacked a real connection in that department besides himself were the two youngest. And kai was too young to desire it.

He did suspect Tatia was older than she let on, likely older than him, but despite the pain of her existence, she was still young and so very naive. Which was truly why Rey had no interest in her. He grinned, knowing this cold analysis would have infuriated her. He set fully to his breakfast and let her stew.

If she blew up she would have to answer to Sera and Elaya, who were certain to react badly to such insubordination. Though they were all gooey over each other, and about as besotted as they could be, he knew all too well that each of them was mentally preparing for the upcoming journey, which promised to be even more dangerous than the initial week had been.

The angel and demon ate ravenously. The two were passing back insults in the other's tongue, and laughing at mispronunciations. Amitiel could not curse, even in HellSpeak, and of course Narxis could not avow himself to the Almighty, even when using the Tongue of Divinity. It creating interesting gaps in the conversation, and forced them to be very creative with their insults.

"Feather duster"

"Soot Sucker"

"Ringhead"

"Furry buns"

"Harp player"

"Goat man"

Were just a few of the more kind and rather silly that began the 'contest.'

Sera left the wolf and shifter to their bickering. She knew Elaya meant no hard feelings and that Kai knew that too. The leader of the group was just happy to see no one fighting. The siren was a little off and quiet, but it was easy to see why. And no one wanted to revisit that subject so they let it lie, knowing Tatia would find peace at her own time. Sera’s bigger concern was actually on Lairia and Reynault. They looked happy, but that could easily sour. They had seen the sorceress’ temper on the first day, and Reynault was not one to be trifled with. If things worked out, Seraphina would be happy for them both, but she worried her friend might get hurt, and it was indeed the first time she had seen him with a woman not to glamor or feed on her, but just wanting her company. It’s about time. Oh Reynault, I hope you find everything I have in Elaya.

Blinking, she turned her thoughts on the day ahead of them. They really needed to get some headway, as she was hoping to reach one of their usual campsites before the sun set. And it was easily a half day’s walk without interruptions.

“Finish up guys,” Sera instructed, cutting through conversations as she noticed the sun ray’s rising, “We need to hit the road. Plus, I promised someone I’d say goodbye before I left.”

She turned and smiled at Elaya, knowing only she would understand who it was. Her brother rarely saw her, just as much as she so rarely saw him. He had promised to see her, and they had agreed to meet at the gate’s leaving the city.

They all finished their meals and Sera got up to pay, throwing most of her purse into the two night stay and meals. With that out of the way she turned and waved at the group at the table, signalling they could head out. Not waiting for them, Sera zig-zagged her way through the growing crowd to the front door and stepped out into the morning sun, ready for what the day held.

"Good morning Fire Queen."

A large group of men and women, all well dressed and very fit bowed low to the Phoenix. Each of them had vertical pupil cat eyes. They held the bow for a long while, then rose forming a solid ring about her, all well away, and being were's possibly less susceptible to her powers.

"We give homage to the new mate of the Metuzi Princess. But we require you come with us. Now."

Narxis and Amitiel drew Sera back behind them as they stepped forward together and their wings rose, white and black forming an impenetrable protective wall about her, though she could somehow see through it.

Amitiel spoke very softly. "It is not meet to interrupt a lady's morning with such foolishness. Why do think you have the right to the time of the Lady Seraphina?"

"We have much to tell her regarding her decision. She has chosen poorly in her mating. There are more powerful prides than the Metuzi."

Narxis laughed. "Such as? The Rexnar are scattered and dying out and they were the only were clan even fractionally as powerful as the Metuzi. We are packmates to Elaya and the Metuzi. You are insulting us all." He gestured at Sera. "And she is marked as pack and life mate to Elaya. Do you really think we would allow you to take her?"

The leader sniffed. "You are but two."

Narxis smirked. "This is Amitiel. Battle Captain of the Host of Heaven. The Sword of Even. And I am Narxis. Uncrowned Prince of Hell." He flourished and his unholy blades rose, while the divine lights of Amitiel's blades rose as well.

Amitiel spoke again. "You should go."

Duldrea reached through the joined wings and drew Seraphina back, looking over her shoulder to see Rey, Gerry, Kai, and likely Laria and Tatia all straining, and failing, to hold back an enraged Elaya. Drea whispered. "Come calm her down before she slaughters them all."

Elaya shrieked upon seeing her lover. "SERA!!!"

Outside the were's all blanched and fell back a step and the two beings before them smiled. "You cower at the mere sound of her voice. You cannot hope to take her mate and live. Go in peace. With your lives."

For a moment it seemed they would. They were ready to break. Then the leader surged forward, shifting into a massively powerful humanoid lion shape, with a thick black mane hanging to the middle of his chest. The others followed suit, becoming leopards, cheetahs, more lions and lionesses, tigers, panthers, and even ligers. They were an impressive sight, but as they shifted, the two beings lunged forward. Narxis went left, while Amitiel went right and they met in the middle upon the leader.

In their wake, each cat fell to the earth, unconscious and still shifted, but somehow turned into kittens. They were gathered into a large pile and all purred as they slept. The two then crashed to a stop and as one smote their blades straight into the brain of the leader, who screamed, then poofed into a kitten as well, falling, asleep, on top of the pile.

Drea sighed that no one had been killed, then moved aside as Elaya, dragging the others forward several feet before she slithered free and rushed Sera. She wrapped about Sera and kissed her before checking her from the top of her head to her toes and back again. Once satisfied she kissed the redhead again. "I love you so much." She hugged her lover, then began to growl as she looked at the pile of kittens.

She started to pull away but the angel moved into her path. "They are now but innocent kittens and children Elaya. i cannot allow you to harm them."

She pointed at Sera. "But they were guna take her from me!"

"Yes. But they cannot now. it would be murdering children."

Elaya scowled at him then sighed. "Fine." She grumbled and nuzzled into Sera's neck while Drea laughed, then went to check on the others.

"Is everyone alright?"

Rey and Gerry, both the toughest and most skilled in restraining Elaya, both looked ruffled but unhurt. Had she wanted to she could have ripped them to shreds and they both knew it. They nodded and stood, helping the others stand. "Good try guys."

Drea smiled. "We're lucky. If Elaya hadn't been double checking gear she would have been with Sera outside."

Gerry grunted. "Yeah. And the quarter would run with blood for another three days."

Rey nodded. "She is rather...intense is our werewolf."

Gerry smirked and nodded toward Elaya who was still nuzzling into Sera's neck and humming while the angel and demon scooped the kittens into a basket. "She's in love. We haven't even seen her angry yet."

That sent a shiver through the group and Drea whispered. "And then there is the other side to consider."

Gerry arched an eyebrow.

"What happens when Elaya is in danger or hurt. Do you imagine Sera will be any less protective? And none of us can restrain her." She gestured at Laria. "Not even our sorceress."

Gerry winced and nodded. "Then let's hope we won't have to. And pity the fool that lays hands on Elaya. He'll never know what hit him. Time to go everyone."

He lead the group out of the inn, where a crowd had formed to ooh and ahh over the admittedly adorable kittens.

Elaya would have none of this and refused to let Sera near them, grumbling about cats only being good for eating.

She hadn't expected the sudden crowd of were's but she smelt them heavily as she stepped outside, their musks unmistakable, giving off their were status. They bowed and rose and to any other being perhaps they would find this humbling or even a little worrying, but Seraphina had quite a different feeling around it all.

"We give homage to the new mate of the Metuzi Princess. But we require you come with us. Now."

It bubbled up, unable to be contained. It was loud and clear, pouring out of her mouth and ringing around him. Seraphina broke into a laugh like no other, tears welling in her eyes even as Amitiel and Narxis took protective stances around her. The laughter continued, her arms wrapping around her stomach as she tried to hold the giggles back, giving the leader a mocking serious face.

"...She has chosen poorly in her mating. There are more powerful prides than the Metuzi."

Again, their words made her laugh, the giggles just bursting forward, pure and untainted as she held her sides and laughed. She tried to suck in air, but she found their entire claim far too hilarious.

"More...powerful?" she gasped, trying to calm the laughter, "You're joking right? Right?"

They looked deadily serious and it made her snort, her laughter continuing as Amitiel and Narxis took over the conversation, obviously with a much more serious degree. The phoenix couldn't help herself though. She had indeed just spent the best night of her life with the woman after her heart and soul, and these fools thought they could take her from that, or much less that they could even lay a hand on her. She was glad the angel and demon stepped in though. A display of her powers in such a public place wasn't wise, especially since Phoenixes were still saught after by many a hunter. She did not need eyes on her.

She slapped a hand over her mouth to still the bubbles within her stomach, letting the two men fight this one, her ears listening while her eyes watched the leader. For a moment, all seemed to be coming to a peaceful end, and then the were's starting shifting. Sera's joking manner turned serious as fire licked her hands, ready for any fight coming her way. Suddenly a very cold hand was on her arm, burning at her as her head flashed to Duldrea, expecting a fight until she saw the diety. Ignoring the pain of her touch she took a few steps back, her head whipping to see Elaya and show her she was fine, her grin having not even faded yet. Then her eyes turned to the shifting group, knowing Duldrea's intentions were wise, but these were's needed a lesson taught. She made a move to step forward but yet again the angel and demon took care of it, and as the first of the were's turned into a kitten Sera let out a whooping laugh, her fire disappearing as she held both hands to her mouth, trying to stifle the girl within her from going "awwww" and the laugh that continued to threaten to spill from her perfect lips. Her eyes were watering with tears from the hilarity of this entire scene as she turned her face to see Elaya again. All her lover could see was a giddy phoenix, looking like she was about to cry as she held back the giggles.

The fight was over before it began and Elaya rushed forward, knocking Tatia and Lairia over completely in the process in her rush to get to Sera. The phoenix pulled her into a tight hug, but she knew there was no need to worry.

"Elaya, baby," she whispered, pushing a strand of hair from her face and pulling back, so Elaya could truly see the amusement on the phoenix's face, how hilarious she found this pack's pitiful attempt at kidnapping, "Stronger than the Metuzi? Really?"

She spluttered another laugh, a grin breaking across her face, hoping that her happiness was contagious enough to effect the werewolf, to let her see the hilarity of it all. The phoenix held back the question on her lips of keeping a kitten when Elaya scowled and threatened to murder them, knowing the wolf was not finding the threat against Sera as funny as the phoenix did.

"Elaya," she pulled the wolf's face back to stare at hers, "They literally thought...they were stronger...than the Metuzi."

She was giggling again, the thought just too incredibly stupid not to be funny.

Meanwhile inside the door of the inn everyone was getting back to their feet, Tatia brushing off her brand new armor and checking that nothing was tarnished as she stood next to Gerry and Malakai who had been knocked back a little. It had been sent to the inn that morning, ready and perfected and Tatia had found it not only flattering, but much, much stronger. Not to mention the plenty of hidden pockets for her knives, and Gerry had helped her collect a few more, getting the hands custom made like the rest so that they all fit perfect and light in her hand. Those two had arrived in a box along with the armor that morning, and while breakfast had tarnished her mood a little, her new outfit lifted her spirits some.

Lairia was taking Rey's hand and rising, wiping dust from her dress. She had tried in vain to help strain the wolf from going outside until the threat was gone, and it resulted in most of them either falling or tripping on themselves in the process.

"Thank you Reynault," she stated softly as she rose, smiling calmly at him and turning her face to the approaching Duldrea, "We're lucky. If Elaya hadn't been double checking gear she would have been with Sera outside."

Very true indeed. Lairia brushed the last of the dirt and looked around at the silent inn, everyone watching them. Ignoring them she turned to Drea as she spoke of her power being uneffective against Sera. It was true. The sorceress could try and contain her, but that amount of power to contain such a fire would likely harm Lairia. She wouldn't admit to knowing spells to slow the phoenix, mostly due to knowing most of them would kill her, and those that would not could hurt Seraphina. And she wouldn't want to hurt the Phoenix if it came down to it, only wanting to stop untold destruction from unfolding.

"Yes, let's," Lairia replied to Gerry's comment, wanting to be well out of the limelight as she stepped forward, keeping to Rey's side as the sun hit their faces. Outside Elaya was keeping a slightly disturbingly giddy Sera from getting near the kitten, their leader obviously finding the attempt on her life laughable. Probably due to them being barely a threat, or maybe Sera was simply cockier than Lairia knew. She suspected the former though.

"I want one," she whispered, eyes widening at the adorable pile of kittens as she restraining from cooing over them like the rest.

Elaya was still all rage and blood lust until she caught Sera's comment. "They what?"

Narxis paused by the two. "They claimed to be more powerful than the Metuzi."

Elaya blinked, looked at Amitiel who nodded, then looked back at Sera and began to howl with laughter as well. She hugged the redhead close giggling, then took a deep breath. "Come on. if i don't get us out of here we'll have to be carried out still laughing."

She drew Sera on as Narxis and Amitiel got the gear and Gerry indicated he had everyone else moving on after the vanishing, still laughing, lovers.

Drea caught Laria's request and arched an eyebrow. "Well...why not. The still were kittens will be taken in by the Circle. But the others need homes...How many Narxis?!"

"Thirty nine altogether. We fully vanquished twelve of them. The others will have a second chance. Tatia if you pick one don't get a liger."

Gerry laughed at this. "yeah. Even altogether we couldn't afford to feed it."

Rey ignored all this as he arched an eyebrow at his lady's request. "Indeed?" He bowed, left her beside Duldrea, and collected the twelve homeless kittens. He sorted them out, then selected a white Siberian tiger kitten with bright intelligent green eyes. He held the cat out to the sorceress, and the wee one mewed and reached for her, clearly wanting comfort but showing no fear. "A male. Powerful despite the reduction. Clearly smarter now than he was."

Amitiel looked at the kitten for a moment and smirked. "She was rather stupid. We switched the sexes as well."

Rey laughed. "I think this one should suit you nicely Laria."

Gerry nudged Drea, "What about you?"

She sighed. "They are most adorable. But my pets must be able to swim as I can Gerald. But what of you Tatia?"

A very small and very sweet black panther kitten was winding his way between the siren's legs, mewing softly. Gerry smiled and nodded at the little one. "reminds me of you."

Sera let herself get pulled in, laughing along with her lover, "See? It is hilarious. Stronger than the Metuzi...ha."

The two were just dying of laughter as they started down the road, giggling loudly. The angel and demon were trying to round up the rest of the group and get everyone moving, but the sight of kittens had everyone paused. Reynault was amongst the pile of them, picking out a small white Siberian cub, and holding it out to Lairia who cooed and scooped the tiny being up.

"Aren't you adorable," she exclaimed, holding the cub within her arms and petting its small head as it yawned, "Your name shall be Rhaegal my little prince."

Her eyes flashed back to Rey and she gave him a dazzling smile reserved only for him, then returned to petting and murmuring to her new pet. Beside her Tatia was picking up a sweet panther kitten although she looked a little flustered. The siren had never had a pet before, or cared for one. But as she picked it up the kitten licked her cheek and purred, snuggling into her arms.

"I don't think it, he...she...wants to leave me," Tatia exclaimed, looking a little bewildered at Gerry, "Should I?"

Kai laughed at the look on her face, patting her shoulder, "Pets take work T. You got to raise them, and care for them and love them. But I think you'll do fine."

He walked away, following Sera and Elaya's footsteps. Tatia was still pondering whether to keep the little one as the crowd moved in on the other kittens that weren't were's, having been put in two groups. Those that were were kittens were being grouped together by a couple of pedestrians, offering to take them to the Circle for Amitiel who made no complaint. The other homeless kittens were quickly scooped up by many, until most of the crowd was splitting up to return home with their new pets. What caught Tatia's eyes was a small girl with brown hair pulled into a ponytail and dirt covering most of her skin. Her eyes were big and wide, and she was standing off to the side of the crowd, watching timidly.

"Excuse me for a second," Tatia spoke calmly, passing everyone and strolling slowly up to the girl, still within hearing distance, "Hey there. What's your name?"

"Bea," the little girl mumbled, looking to her feet, "Your kitten...is cute."

Tatia smiled, getting down on one knee so she was at Bea's level, "Would you like to pet her? She's very soft."

Her little head shot up and she gave a nervous smile, reaching out and then pulling back, "No...no I shouldn't."

"Just one pet?" Tatia pushed, and the small panther kitten looked at the girl, "She will love it."

Bea's tiny hand stretched out and touched the kitten. Her eyes widened another fraction and she pet it again, taking a tentative step forward so that she could pet the little one.

"She's a purr monster," Tatia laughed, the kitten vibrating with happiness, "Do you like her?"

"Yes. I've always wanted a cat."

Tatia smiled, "Bea, how old are you?"

"Eight. Although Mother Teresa says I act like I'm 2."

Her words only confirmed the siren's suspicions. She had seen something in this young girl that had reminded her of herself. And there it was. Within her words she had implied she lived in an orphanage. Most of the women who run those places were nuns, called Mother This, or Mother That. Tatia could remember a few still from her time, including a Mother Teresa. Perhaps they were one and the same?

"When I was eight, I had my own Mother Teresa in my orphanage who always said if I couldn't act my age, I would need to at least act older than three," Tatia whispered, although she was aware most of the group had good hearing. This was something she had shared with none of them. Other than a select few, none really even knew she was raised in an Orphanage, "She was a hard lady but fair. Mother Teresa Gable. I used to sneak out every few days and wander the city, looking for cool things to add to my collection. She always lectured me when I returned."

"That's my Mother Teresa's name!" Bea exclaimed, confirming it. The nun must have travelled to a new city to work in another orphanage. "She hates it too, but she hasn't found my box of things yet. I found a button and a thimble today. You were really in an orphanage too? But your...your so...cool."

That made Tatia smile; she hadn't heard that statement before. The crowd was most gone now, along with all the kittens, "You know what happened? I worked and I worked and never quit, and one day this woman came along and offered me a job to be on her team. That's how I got here. What do you want to do when you grow up big?"

Bea stuck her finger to her mouth, thinking before blurting, "I want to be pretty like you."

"Well Bea that's good," Tatia whispered, pushing hair out of the girl's dirty face, "Because you already are. You are the prettiest girl around. Your just hiding under all that dirt, waiting to come out."

Her smile grew and Bea dropped her hand from her face, the girl feeling a little less shy just then. Her other hand continued to pet the purring kitten, the little girl's brown eyes never quite leaving its cute face. Tatia watched and wondered if the orphanage treated this girl alright. Or was she shunned and punished, like Tatia had been countless times? The thought made the siren's stomach churned, that anyone could punish or hit this young, shy girl. But many orphanages weren't kind to their wards.

"Here," she handed the little girl the kitten, and her eyes bulged, fear forming over her face until the panther kitten settled into her arms and continued purring. Bea held the little beast and started to whisper to it nice little words that warmed Tatia's heart. As if the kitten knew what she was saying it mewed and purred, happy to be held and loved.

"I think she belongs with you," Tatia exclaimed, "She's very happy."

"Mother Teresa would never let me keep her," Bea's eyes filled with tears at the thought, obviously wanting the cub.

"Well you give Mother Teresa this," Tatia pulled her coin purse from her side and handed the entire thing to the girl, whose arms were now quite full, "And you tell her that Tatiana sent this along with her warmest wishes. She will know the name."

The kitten squirmed as Bea's arms grew too full, so the girl put the kitten down and it sat at her feet, obviously content with staying with the girl. Tatia's heart went to both of them, hoping all the best for Bea and her new sidekick. "Be good for the nuns, okay Bea? And feed your kitten lots of treats."

"I'm going to name her Lola," Bea grinned, "I will Tatiana. I will. Thank you."

She launched forward and threw herself at Tatia, hugging her tightly. The mood Tatia had been minutes before meeting Bea dissipated completely, feeling good for helping these two little lives. With the gold in that purse, Mother Teresa could feed the orphans for a good month without worry, and she knew that would mean the most to the nun. Hugging her back tightly for a minute, Tatia finally let go and watched the eight year old turn and skip away happily calling to Lola to follow, the kitten meowing and trotting after her new owner. Standing and turning in a fluid motion, Tatia faced the quiet group watching her. Even Kai had paused a few paces down the street to watch the interaction.

"Are we ready?" she clapped her hands and gave them all a dazzling smile, falling into her bubbly self. It hurt to see Rey with Lairia, but she'd be damned to be that girl anymore who pined after a man who did not want her. Seeing Bea had reminded her of herself. Tatia was strong inside. Strong and happy.

Gerry moved past Kai and gently took Tatia in his arms. He rarely showed affection, but he had been touched, deeper than words could ever express, at the kindness of her gift.

he drew back and smiled at her, then shuddered and stepped back, unable to withstand the emotion any longer.

Duldrea was weeping.

Elaya had sensed the shudder through the group and had turned to watch with her powerful nose, and related everything to her lover. "Such a sweet girl...but...oooh."

Narxis moved up to Tatia and held up another black panther kitten. It was small and very thin, and clearly hurt. "This one wasn't part of our little group of visitors." The kitten was filthy and she mewed plaintively, feebly trying to wriggle free of the demon. He gently placed the kitten in Tatia's hands where she instantly calmed and curled, purring.

He nodded. "I wasn't sure what to do with her... she has no family. Her pride was captured and enslaved, then murdered after they tried to escaped. She has no one." he touched his temple, assuring her that this depressing knowledge had been granted him because it was true.

Gerry nodded at the wee one. "You should take this one Tatia. Helping her heal will do the same for you." His eyes flicked toward the vampire and sorceress, then in on her eyes.

Duldrea called out. "Oh keep the little beast! She adores you!"

Indeed the new kitten had wrapped her forepaws around Tatia's wrist and was asleep, the gashes in her flanks no longer bleeding.

Elaya related this all to Sera as well shaking her head. "Yeah...their guna get her to do it. She's never taken care of anyone but herself before. " She sniffed. "If you ask for a kitten i'm tying you to kai's back for the next three days." She pulled her lover into a kiss. "And you are NOT putting a bow on me in wolf form." Her eyes narrowed threateningly and her fangs rose in her mouth allowing her to growl most menacingly before she giggled breaking the spell and kissed the redhead again.

Tatia hadn't expected such a reaction from the group. Kai looked stunned silent, Lairia was watching with a smile on her face as she pet her own little pet, and Duldrea was crying. Gerry pulled her into a hug - the first and possibly last she would ever get from him - and it stunned her.

"I didn't do anything extraordinary guys," she exclaimed, "I only did what I wish someone else would have done when I was in her shoes."

She looked toward Gerry and her voice lowered, "But I appreciate the hug, friend. I'm grateful your giving me a chance."

She meant about their growing friendship. He'd been so wary of her the last year she had even teased him about it countless times, telling him he must be afraid of pretty girls. But after the rough few days she was having, it was nice knowing they were finally getting along. She gave him a dazzling smile, trying her damnest to move past the hurt within her heart.

Then Narxis stepped up and placed yet another little kitten in her arms, this one much more sickly looking. Somehow it just pulled at her heartstrings more, seeing this poor little one. She held it close, squeezing the tiny thing against her cheek. This one was hers, she knew it the minute she held the little one.

"Thank you Narxis," she smiled at him, the light growing back in her eyes, that Tatia they all knew returning piece by piece, "I'll care for her. I've never had a pet before."

She nuzzled the kitten's head with her nose, breathing in its musky, dirty scent. Making a face she moved her head away as she started to walk, nudging Gerry with her shoulder to walk with her.

"And the first thing we need is a bath, don't we?" she cooed to the kitten, her voice high and adorable, like a child's as she spoke to her new pet, "And some bandages, and maybe a snack. Isn't that right?"

"She's back," Kai grinned to Rey, falling in behind Gerry and Tatia as Lairia nudged Reynault so that they could walk with the angel and demon, her own tiger cub fast asleep in her arms.

Waiting down the road, Sera was listening to Elaya's account of all that was taking place, "Oh Elaya, but you'd look so cute with a bow," she giggled, playing with her lover's hair. As the team caught up they all moved along towards the gate, until a familiar redhead came into sight.

"Good morning brother!" Sera called, jogging forward and into his open arms, as he spun her in a hug, making her laugh.

"Good morning baby sister," he smiled down at her, looking up as Elaya and the group approached, seeing the kittens, "New pets?"

"Indeed. Add-ons to our group. They add a cuteness factor," Sera joked, "I'm glad I get to see you before we leave. Group, this is my older brother Jeziah. Elaya met him last night."

"Good morning to you all. Nice to see you again Elaya. I come bearing some food for the road, and I was hoping to speak to Elaya for a minute."

Sera blinked, looking confused, "Why...Elaya?"

He shrugged, "An older brother doing his duties. Got to talk to the new girlfriend of his sister's , give her the ol' 'don't hurt her speech'. Don't worry Sera, I'll bring her back in the same condition."

"You better."

He offered a satchel to his sister, and opening it she found it filled with fresh bread wrapped in plastic to make it last, a variety of cheeses in wax papers, fruits, fresh miniature pies all wrapped and still warm, and at the bottom...

"What's in these?" Sera asked, pulling out a weirdly shaped food wrapped in aluminum foil.

"Honey glazed smoked chicken, with roasted potatoes and vegetables. Each holds enough for one person, and I packed enough for everyone to get one meal. It'll stay hot till lunch time."

"Jeziah is a cook," Sera explained, "And an exceptional one. Thank you brother, this is far more than I expected."

"Don't worry about it," he kissed his sisters head, "It's the least I can do for my little sister. Now if I may, Elaya, a word?"

He started walking away, heading across the street and into an alley, obviously not wanting to be overheard. Sera nodded for Elaya to join him, knowing her brother would never attempt anything. He stopped short at the end of the alley, far enough away that he was out of earshot of everyone.

"Sorry for the secrecy," he explained, "Sera would have my head if she overheard. I just wanted a minute to talk to you. I can see how fast you two are becoming an item. I love it. I can't remember the last time my sister was this happy. And she's only ever had mortal partners before, and most ended horribly. A few found out what she was and judged her, a couple...died. You got to understand, sometimes she just forgets how hot she can really burn. If she hurt you, she'd never forgive herself. She still hasn't forgiven herself for the innocents who have died because of her heat."

He shook his head, "It's happened to all us Phoenix's. We fall for the wrong people, end up hurting them, and in the end lose them, one way or another. Like a curse. It's why most Phoenix's turn to each other for mates, to find a life partner who can't be burnt. Sera's a special case though...she can never do that. She's one of a kind with her orientation. I guess what I'm saying is, your possibly the first being able to withstand a portion of her heat. And for her, that means everything. But don't let her get over zealous, or she might hurt you, and you've never seen Sera when that happens. She...snaps. A part of her just goes mad, its why she lived in solitude for so many years. Inside she's terrified of killing those she loves."

He ran a hand through his hair, laughing nervously, "I'm sorry. That's not what I wanted you over here for. But its good advice nonetheless. What I wanted to ask was a favor. When I heard Seraphina had become a mercenary, I wasn't too worried. She was single, hadn't made strong connections with the group, I thought it would keep her level headed, that she'd be careful. And it did...for a time. I'm seeing her now, so happy, so in love, and while I'm happy - no overjoyed - for my baby sister, I worry about her. You have to understand, she doesn't mean to be this way, but when she grows emotional connections and attachments she gets reckless. She doesn't weigh the consequences of risking her own life to save any of yours. There will come a point I'm sure where you are all in major trouble, and Sera...she won't think twice about sacrificing her life for you and the group. Not anymore, she'd see it as an act of love. And as her older brother, you can understand my worry. Just do me this favor. If your in the position where she might think her life is worth sacrificing to save one of yours, please...please just drag her out of that fight. She may scream and kick and yell, but she won't die. I know we can regenerate and rebirth ourselves, but the process of it is no small task, and there are some deaths we cannot come back from...ever. She won't think of it that way of course. So Elaya, please, protect my sister from herself when the time comes. I couldn't bear to lose her for good. I'm sure you feel the same way."

Gerry nodded at Kai, overhearing the words, as he handed the siren some small bits of meat and some bandages. "Just have Drea wash him this time. She might be able to seal his wound too."

Rey gently lay his hand on Laria's waist, both touching and claiming her, but also allowing himself to be a more powerful shield and guardian. No one had said anything but the showy exit had them under many eyes, few of them friendly and the beautiful sorceress drew even more than her normal share.

Elaya smiled sweetly, leaned into her lover and nipped her ear. "If you put a bow in my hair, on my body, or anywhere on me without my permission I will tie you up, lick you right to edge of orgasm, then leave you there for three days." She actually liked the idea, well aware of how voracious the redhead's sexual appetite was.

She fell into step with Sera and the group, though her attention was drawn away until she spotted her lover's brother.

She kissed Sera's neck as she explained. "Be fair Sera. Your brother isn't a cook. he's a chef. An artist. a simply fabulous one at that."

She followed Jeziah without concern, and said nothing until he finished. She nodded. "I absolutely agree. I already have plans with the others if anything should happen to me. And Drea has agreed to serve as a sort of extinguisher. It will hurt her but she'll live. I don't like it but I want to have Sera for a long long long time. I will do everything in my power to protect Jeziah."

She leaned up and kissed his cheek. "I love your sister so very very much. Thank you for her. And thank you for the food. Cannot wait to eat it. If you can let the others of your kind know that they have true and loyal allies in the Metuzi. So long as any Phoenix stands in favor with the rest of your kind, they have the protection of a pack mate of the Metuzi. A high honor they may need."

She smiled and nodded toward the group. "I best be going before they get silly. Or Sera talks them into putting bows in my fur when i transform next. I might have to eat your sister whole if she does that to me."

The group stood around near the gate, waiting for Elaya to return. As they did, Lairia snuggled her white kitten, leaning in towards Reynault as she did so. Tatia had found a seat and was wiping blood of the little one's flank, exposing the wounds so she could bandage them. Drea and Gerry had both spoken of helping her, but she refused them both politely. She wanted to do this alone, to care and heal her new pet by herself. Otherwise who was she helping if she got the others to do it?

"You just eat that meat," she cooed, the kitten chomping on the small piece of beef, "And I'll heal you right up. Isn't that right?"

"Have you named her yet?" Kai asked, stepping up.

"Of course," Tatia grinned, "Her name is Ebony. My precious Ebony."

~

Meanwhile Jeziah was beaming down at the wolf for her warm words and vows.

"Thank you Elaya. I trust your judgement. I just had to make sure, she is afterall my baby sister. And the food wasn't a problem. I'm lucky to see Sera once in a decade. It's the least I can do. Make her visit me next time you are all in town. I'll prepare a feast for your group. You'll be so full you won't eat for days."

He led her back to the group, and an anxious looking redhead who swooped Elaya up in a hug, glaring suspiciously at her brother, "What did you say to her Jeziah?"

"Oh I totally told her about that one time in Venice when-" he was cut short by a hand over his mouth and a venomous look in Sera's eye.

"You promised," she snapped, looking actually mad.

"I was joking," Jeziah pulled her hand from her face, "No juicy stories for Elaya. Just a favor I needed. Since your all travellers. Don't worry about it sis, you have your hands full."

She knew there was more but she didn't press, knowing the group needed to hit the round. Hugging her brother, he gave his goodbyes and all too soon they were heading out the pair of familiar gates, back onto the road. Once more they hit the path, following it through the thick trees, wandering what was next in store for them.

"Venice?" Elaya grinned at her lover, very curious about the story.

She let it go though and fell back to Tatia. "You move up beside Sera with Ebony sweety. Narxis on point. Gerry on six. Rey you stay with the client. Drea and Kai will take position behind you. Amitiel sprout wings."

As the group obeyed, she moved to Sera, took a deep loving kiss, then sighed stepped back and morphed into her massive full wolf form, licked Sera's forearm, then vanished, circling the group as they moved.

Amitiel kept an eye out and informed Sera, while Drea obediently chatted with Laria about her own kitten, leaving Tatia to Sera's gentle care.

Narxis and the angel were playing a game, seeing who could spy the various flora and fauna and identify them first, and chatting in their respective languages again.

Elaya stayed closed and hoped her sense that everyone was more relaxed and settled was true. She also touched Sera's mind and heart, letting her feel that everything was safe so far, and how even this small and very temporary separation had the wolf's heart aching for Sera.

After the day they had had together, it felt odd going back to her leader role, odd not to be touching Elaya or holding her hand. A week ago this had seemed normal. And now the Phoenix was falling in love, and that probably scared her more than anything. Sera had been in love before, plenty of times, but they all ended horribly. She could wait months before realizing her feelings, or push it off even past a year, but nothing had helped. She always destroyed things, always burnt up what she held dear. What if it happened to Elaya? What if she burned too hot, or upset her too much? She had lost partners from exposing her true identity. Elaya already knew that she was a Phoenix, but what if the knowledge made her careless? What if Sera killed her lover by accident?

I'd never forgive myself her thoughts answered, I have to be careful. I have to protect her from not just her enemies, but me. I won't let it happen again. I won't.

"You okay Sera?" Tatia had noticed their leader drawing within herself, obviously contemplating something upsetting. Her words brought her out of those spiralling thoughts and she blinked. Her eyes readjusting on the brunette with the black kitten.

"Just had a bad thought," she murmured, smiling at Tatia as she pushed those feelings away once more. She just needed to be careful. That was all, "how's Ebony?"

"Tired," she proclaimed, petting the sleeping baby, "but better."

Behind them the rest of the group seemed to be fairing well, chatting amongst themselves. Lairia was wrapped in conversation with Drea but remained aware of Rey's hand on her waist, making sure to keep in step with him. It was a small gesture of his but it meant much to the sorceress.

"Lots of magic castors have pets," Lairia exclaimed, "why I haven't gotten one beats me but this little guy will be splendid when he grows. I saw a sorcerer with a cougar familiar once. Very loyal cat."

Sera's mood struck her lover and Elaya sighed. Jeziah knew his sister well.

She let it go, though she would slip through the group occasionally to lick Sera's hands and fingers in a rush, teasing her playfully, swatting her pert rump with her thick powerful tail and other silly little games.

This went on until Narxis found a fine campsite, a well secluded glen around a deep enough but well bounded cave. The fire was built in the mouth of the cave, preventing even the slightest smoke from giving their position away, while Gerry napped atop the cave with Amitiel keeping watch for now.

Drea had gotten Tatia and laria to sit across from each other and introduce their kittens. Rey had been dismissed to go hunt as it was his turn, while kai had been dragged in to help 'translate' for the cats.

Elaya had double checked the perimeter, and then dragged Sera off for a walk. She wouldn't talk, just holding her lover's hand and enjoying being with her.

They had walked most of the day until Narxis found them a campsite, and set up was relatively easy. Tatia and Lairia had found spots to sit a little further in the cave, keeping the kittens within reach. Ebony was still fairly sleepy, her back end wrapped in bandages now. Tatia had been given some herbal mixture to rub into the poor little one's flank, and it seemed to be helping, the bleeding completely gone now. As Ebony little yellow eyes opened up Rhaegal was already bouncing over, his paws bigger than his legs so that he kept tripping and rolling, letting out happy meows.

"I think they like each other," Tatia laughed, "Although Ebony is still waking up."

Kai sat between the girls, making a triangle as he watched them, "Don't let Rhaegal get too rough. He's really excited to play, but Ebony isn't feeling hot. She's still recovering."

Meanwhile Sera was being led by one Elaya, who wouldn't speak as they walked.

"What are you up to?" she asked, trying to break through Elaya's resolve, "C'mon baby, tell me."

Drea reached out and knocked Rhaegal over, distracting him as she rubbed his belly and ears smiling. "I always loved cats. There was a legend in ancient Egypt that alligators and crocodiles were the big cats of the water world. I never really agreed, though i love my scaly fellows. Still i could see the connection....aren't you sweet?"

She let Rhaegal clutch at her hand as he looked over at Ebony. "She is a sweetheart as well. Narxis how was she injured?"

He arched an eyebrow. He was playing a card game with Rey, who was staying out of Tatia's line of sight but fully in Laria's. He looked over at the kitten. "She seems to have had fallen into something of a rough pride of street animals. gathered for warmth and comfort. But she was the smallest and they were more domestic. They didn't like or trust her but they let her sleep there. Then some asshat decided to utilize them as...well false high quality meats. Cages, traps and beatings. She escaped by squeezing through a hole in the fence that tore her up some, after a few strikes and a very nasty kick. She was trapped under a large pile of.... snakes. Which she is very afraid of. The snakes bit at her, luckily they couldn't reach but she was very scared. She cut herself up like this getting free of their cages. The would be cooks have been arrested, many killed... I suspect Elaya's hand in that. Despite her anger she doesn't like it when animals are hurt." He blinked his eyes focusing and nodded toward Tatia. "You are the first being ever to show her true kindness. And no i don't count. I frighten her too. i don't smell right."

Rey cocked his head. "how do you know all of that?"

Narxis shrugged. "Suffering calls to me. When I need to know things they just appear in my head. I can usually get more details to come up by focusing. But it's not a hundred percent."

Rey nodded. "And Amitiel?"

"Same thing but in reverse. He knows about the goods done by or to beings almost instantly. He couldn't even see our little friend there though because she was so hurt. The pain of the innocent is his Boss's job to help. Amitiel's is to protect them. It actually upsets him that he can be so blind sometimes." Narxis chuckled at the thought. "When he gets this way Elaya calls him Tin Man. You remember that stuff?"

Rey laughed. "I loved OZ! Such great stories." And the tow fell to chattering about the old fairy tales of a world long gone, supplying details back and forth, laughing over their favorite moments.

Drea began to hum "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" as she continued to tease Rhaegal, and tried gently to encourage Ebony to join the game.

In the forest Elaya would not speak until she found a short tree with a thick stub jutting out just as she wanted. She drew Sera to it, sat on the stub putting them exactly at eye level, wrapped her legs around the redhead's waist and thighs, her arms over Sera's neck, drew her in close, and kissed her with all the passion and love she could muster for several minutes. It was wild and frantic and though it did turn her on she pushed back her urges until she felt Sera's melting for her.

Then she broke the kiss and narrowed her eyes at her lover. "Alright. Now listen to me my love." She clenched her legs around Sera. Her eyes burned with intensity. "I can smell what you are up to."

She paused to let Sera consider that. "You're getting overprotective. Thinking of how to risk your life to save mine. How you might hurt me." She sniffed dismissively as she grabbed a large hank of Sera's hair. "Now you listen very carefully to me Seraphina Living Flame."

She leaned in and kissed the Phoenix fiercely. "I don't need you to protect me." She glared into her lover's eyes. "I love it when you do, but when you endanger yourself and our future that hurts me a lot more than any of these pathetic fucks we have to fight." She growled as her eyes actually began to water, but let the tears begin.

"I will fight the Almighty Himself, or the Devil or any other great power without any fear. If I have you by my side. But you also have to be there when the fight is over. I don't want to face this world without. And I have news for you. I won't do it. If you go I go."

She was surprised by the fact that she meant this, but she kept her face firm and intent. "So no more hurting or risking yourself. Please Seraphina? For me? Not to protect me. Which is sweet and so kind of you, but to protect us. Our future together. There are so many possibilities for us. But only if you are still around my love."

She gently tugged the hair. "I can take more pain and punishment than even you can imagine. I have before and I will again. It's who and what I am. I can endure more of your heat than you will expect. Please don't think I am one of those weak fools you fell in love with before. They were not worthy of you. I'm not either really but I am better. And I want to be the best for you. But only for you. And I can't do that if you aren't around."

She squeezed her lover and twisted the red hair softly. "I love you Sera. More than i can say. What is between us is more than good. Don't throw it away, even in a noble sacrifice. We can have so much. Don't deny us that." She leaned in and kissed Sera softly, now massaging the redhead's scalp. Her cheeks were wet, and for a wonder as their bodies drew close the tears did not evaporate or steam away.

Tatia scooped Ebony up after hearing her story, her face filled with love, "Awe little Ebony, don't you worry little one. Your mine now. This group will keep you safe."

She rubbed Ebony's head, gaining purrs as the kitten woke up more, her eyes blinking and her tail swishing. After a minute she let out a small chirp, seeing Rhaegal. Letting her down, Tatia watched her new kitten wobble on small legs towards Rhaegal before flopping over, presenting her belly to Duldrea. Rhaegal instantly unattached himself from Drea's hand, chirping and meowing at Ebony as he got into a playful position. His bum wiggled and he went to jump, landing on Ebony. Suddenly she let out a yowl. Balling up and panicking, her feet flailing at him as she freed herself and bolted into Tatia's lap.

"Oh sweetie, he only wanted to play," Tatia spoke calmly, petting the shaky kitten, "Narxis did say the other cats weren't nice to her. I don't think she understands. She just wanted Duldrea's attention."

She held the kitten and pet her, calming the terrified Ebony as Rhaegal watched and waiting. After a few minutes he padded over, his big feet flopping out as he did. With Ebony in her safe spot she seemed a little less frightened, her nose poking out to sniff at the bigger kitten.

"This might take a few sessions," Lairia admitted, watching them, "Ebony is fearful and injured. Rhaegal is very confident. Perhaps she'll do better once she's healed."

She called her kitten over, making little sounds until Rhaegal's head turned and he trotted back, his head held high so he looked like he was strutting, showing himself off.

"You're a little king, aren't you?" she laughed, pulling her kitten into her arms, " Are you hungry? We should probably all eat now."

Meanwhile Sera was at a loss for words; her eyes were welling up at the sight of Elaya's tears, the words striking her hard. Every kiss she got felt bittersweet then, her mind whirling. She couldn't let Elaya hurt herself. Not for Sera. She wanted that future too. The fact Elaya even said there would be one made Sera's heart soar. Elaya wanted a future for them, and Seraphina clinged to that knowledge.

"I'll do my best baby," she whispered, leaning her forehead against Elaya's, "I promise, I will try. I will be more cautious, alright?"

Duldrea smiled at Rhaegal. "He is a tiger my dear. The true king of the jungle. Even lions do not fight tigers except in large groups."

Rey grunted at that. "yeah. for all the claims and trash about them, lions are really just rather pathetic in combat. Lionesses though are immensely dangerous. Still not comparable to a tiger."

Narxis chuckled. "Only thing I've seen guaranteed to drop a tiger is a pack of wolves. Great fighters, but very noble and loyal. And smart. Incredible intelligence. "

Elaya studied her lover then nodded. "Good then my love. You do that, we watch each other's back, and we take care of each other." She drew her lover into another kiss.

"Now. no more sadness. How are you feeling?"

Lairia hugged her kit closer, "I can't wait to see him grow then. He's so precious."

And he was indeed. He lay in her arms upside down, his belly to the sky as he curled his legs up, his eyes closed. Content and happy as he fell asleep. Ebony was much the opposite though, seeing him in Lairia's arms made her braver as she wiggled from Tatia and pranced to Kai, sniffing him first. He hadn't shifted into a cat yet, mostly due to her fear and not wanting to overwhelm or frighten her again. He gave her a few pets before she turned and tried to bounce over to Drea, her clumsy feet tripping as she bounded up and down, making her fall and slip into Drea's lap.

"She's still getting the hang of the walking it seems," Kai laughed, "She's just a little clumsy right now."

~

She wiped the tears from her lovers face nodding, "No more. And I'm great my wolf. Better than great. I have you. I never even knew I was missing something in my life until last night. Last night I realized I want to be everything to you, and I want you to be everything to me. I want us to have that future. I lived in solitary far too long, and I forgot what it meant to feel like this. I don't want to lose it."

Drea laughed watching the kittens. "They will grow. And be wonderful additions to both our group, and to you both. And such sweet things."

She helped the kitten roll over and set to rubbing her belly. "Aren't you darling?"

~

Elaya studied her lover thoughtfully, then leaned in and kissed her deeply. "Then you take care of your life. To stay with me. For a long long long time my love."

She took Sera's hands and squeezed gently. "So you stick around. And keep those delicious lips on mine and my body." His eyes flashed wickedly, but also sincerely.

~

Gerry yawned and stretched sitting up, then froze. "Shit." he tapped his communicator but could tell almost instantly that Elaya was off comms. He sighed, flicked on his goggles, found the pair, kissing and cuddling, rolled to his side, and without delay fired a bullet right between Sera's legs.

~

Elaya snarled and yanked Sera away just as the bullet struck the stump beneath the wolf. She started to grab her comms unit then froze. "Oh shit....Sera we have...visitors."

~

Narxis gulped and bowed. "Master...you have graced us with your infernal presence. Might I be so bold as to ask why?"

Lucifer was beautiful. truly, exceptionally, almost divinely beautiful. Tall, well formed, with thick wavy golden blonde hair, baby blue eyes, and pouting kissing lips.

Drea stood, holding the kitten to her chest protectively.

The Devil himself bowed to her and smiled. "Your Majesty how wonderful to see you again. You look fabulous."

She curtsied. "Lord Lucifer. It cheers my heart to see you well."

~

Elaya shifted, slithered between Sera's legs, and tore off back to the group.

~

Gerry left his post and joined the others. This was Lucifer himself. Gerry didn't have anything that could even make the Devil sneeze let alone hurt him.

~

Rey had stood, pulling Laria and the kitten with him, keeping himself between them and the High Demon of Hell.

Amitiel had returned and though he was fully glorified, he looked small, weak, and paltry compared to the very human looking Lucifer. Lucifer had been an Archangel. Perhaps the other Archangel, matched only by his dear brother Micheal. Amitiel would never tell, and though he longed to show his nerve, he was not foolish enough to give any challenge to the being in their presence.

Lucifer just smiled and waited, not speaking, studying them.

Elaya huffed into camp and set Sera down then shifted back to her human form and gulped, then curtsied as well. "High Demon you burn us with your presence. May we offer you some tea?"

Lucifer smiled. "Ahh Princess Elaya. How lovely to see you again. And yes please. Oh my my my. Lady Flame Seraphina. Such a beauty. I hear the two of you are an item. Such delicious news." His voice was pure golden honey, soothing everyone. He could talk the sun into eating itself and he knew it.

He moved closer to Drea and reached down gently rubbing Ebony's chin. The kitten knew no fear, actually finding him very attractive, purring strongly at his touch. Drea was blushing as he smiled at her, then stepped by, nodding respectfully to Kai. "How lovely to meet you Malakai....Ahhh Princess Tatiana. A true vision. A shame about your parents. Fine rulers. And Lady Laria. is it true you are descended from Merlin himself? An old friend of mine. Not my son, though it was a close thing. And Reynault! How wonderful to see you. You are looking well. And eating of the only the best I'm sure."

He smiled upon one and all, and turned to the angel and demon now, while Elaya, true to her word busied herself making him tea, though she had dragged Sera over to boil the water and heat the tea properly, refusing to speak.

Lucifer moved close to Amitiel and studied him closely, then sniffed. "A well seasoned warrior for Heaven. How is Daddy?"

Amitiel bit his lip then spoke carefully. "Our Father is most well Brother. Should i send Him your regards?"

"Oh please do. He hasn't wanted to speak to me for some time. Ahhh Narxis. Doing well up here?"

Narxis gulped. "Yes Master. All in your name and to your glory."

Lucifer chuckled. "Somehow I doubt that. But that's alright. I don't need more glory." he smiled at his little joke, then turned to see Gerry. He grinned. "Gerald. How lovely. it's been too long."

Gerry gulped as well, but also bowed very respectfully. "I am honored at the pleasure of your presence once again My Lord."

Lucifer smiled. "Always so polite." He turned, picked something invisible off his immaculate blood red suit, then nodded at an empty space where a very normal yet sin black chair appeared. He sat in it and smile at them all. he looked right at Tatia. "Don't worry. Gerry isn't one of mine. Well...not yet. But he has worked for me on occasion. And he did get me to give him some help."

Elaya came forward with a cup and saucer of tea and held it out, her hand still, though her posture made it clear she was ready to order them all to flee and be away with Sera in an instant.

Lucifer chuckled again and took the tea, easily cradling the saucer. "Oh relax. I'm not here to hurt you. or even threaten you. Everyone sit." They did. whether by his command, or his permission none of them would ever know. Even Drea.

He sipped his tea and sighed happily. "You are very kind Elaya. To remember how I like it. Honey, two sugars, and a dash of milk."

Elaya was of course sitting beside Sera, their hands together, her body slightly turned so she was between the High Demon and her lover. She nodded and smiled. "You are memorable High Demon."

He laughed and sipped again. "Most delicious. Thank you. Now onto business." he sipped once more before he spoke though. "Ladies and gentlemen I have come with an offer." He smiled at them all kindly. "I will pay one hundred times what Lady Laria has for you to turn back. Right now. Nothing but pain and trouble ahead I'm afraid. And as for you Lady Laria i will not only refund your payment, but also give you a thousand times your weight in gold and a few select spelleries I happen to have in return for what you have in that box. Two of the spelleries were enchanted and written by Merlin himself, another by Da Vinci, and the last by Amelia Earhart." He smirked at Tatia, knowing she would ask. "Amelia Earhart was an especially gifted sorceress. She vanished into a different plane of reality, and is there to this day, researching magics and powers that even now this world is not yet ready for."

Elaya smiled kindly. "I cannot speak for the rest of the company High Demon but I shall have to decline. You know I cannot take payment from you for any reason."

He smiled. "That is true. But I did consider that. I can offer you my favors once again. I would consider it an honor to owe you quite a few if you would consider the offer. You know how valuable my favors are."

She nodded, blinking at the offer. Satanic favors were marvels, and despite suspicions highly valuables. The list of great names who had been favored by Satan were endless, and their deeds the legacy of history. And to have many to call upon was indeed a heady temptation.

Before she would have accepted, or declined out of hand, depending on her needs. But now she had Sera. She looked at the Phoenix, needing her decision.

While the wolf considered, the others gave their answers. Drea first. "I am afraid not Lord Lucifer. I am going to the sea. To visit my sisters and brothers. And to help a friend. Nothing can compare to that."

He nodded, seeming to fully understand. "Of course Your Grace. i understand. Family is the most important. Do give them my best. Still the offer does not expire." Everybody suddenly had the feeling he didn't mean the offer of money.

She wrinkled her nose, and blushed even more. "My Lord Lucifer. You know full well I am married and devoted to my beloved husband."

He laughed, and the sound was eerily wonderfully beautiful, the end of it heartbreaking, planting the need to hear more. "yes. But I can still hope."

He looked at Amitiel before the angel could speak. "I know you have no need of money, but I could speak with Micheal. He does still take my calls as we used to say. i have little doubt you would like to be returned to the Sainted Lands."

Amitiel nodded. "Of course I would. And you are most kind. But I have my duty. So i must gratefully decline."

Lucifer actually seemed pleased by the refusals, and turned to Gerry next. "Gerald. I know you would like the money. But also that you'll never leave Elaya. So i won't insult you by trying to convince you too. But I do have work for you. When you are ready."

Gerry spoke in a very firm yet respectful tone. "I don't assassinate people anymore My Lord. Out of respect to Elaya."

Lucifer laughed. "Of course you don't. And that's not what i want you for anyway. I have zombie problems. I have little doubt you could help me clean them up quickly. But you think on that. Let me know if you get to the coast."

He looked at Narxis now and smiled. "And you little one. Still desire to be elevated above your brethren and returned to the Houses of Pain?"

Narxis bowed. "I serve My Master. But I would prefer to stay with this group. They have become my friends."

Lucifer arched an eyebrow. "Have they. Would they say the same?"

Elaya spoke up. "We would High Demon."

Lucifer's eyebrow rose even higher. "Indeed. A fine accomplishment Narxis. You choose your friends wisely. Reynault. What do you say?"

Rey stepped forward. "Master Satan i must refuse. I am staying with..." His eyes flicked toward Tatia and he winced, then he spoke. "Laria."

Lucifer smiled. "I see. Very noble of you. Forgive us Princess Tatiana. I know such things pain you. But you could do better than dear Reynault here. Forgive me Reynault but I but speak the truth."

Rey smiled. "No need Master Satan. She easily can find far better than i. As can Laria."

Lucifer smiled in return, his teeth perfect and charming. "They all can can they not? I suspect that is why Princess Elaya and Lady Seraphina make such a good match. No foolish males in the way." He laughed and looked at Malakai, Tatia, Laria, and Seraphina somehow at once. "What of you? Can I dissuade you from this path of pain and hurt? Especially you Princess Tatiana. Do forgive me the fullness of your name. But it seemed forward to use the more friendly shortening. After all. We only just met. A true pleasure by the way."

He smiled and sipped his tea. Elaya moved and filled his cup, and smiled as he thanked her then sat with Sera again. This visit clearly would last a while. Eventually he would get to his real point, but despite the offer, he seemed only vaguely interested in Laria or her little box. Even as powerful as it was, it was nothing compared to him, and everyone knew it.

He was old. Possibly even older than Drea herself. Certainly older than the planet. His eons weighed down upon each of them. And his power. His power was so great even when tamed they knew he could kill them all with a single flick of an eyebrow. Yet he remained polite, charming and friendly. Whatever he truly wanted he was keeping to himself.

One second they were smiling and loving each other. The next she was being shot at, and then Elaya was picking her up on her back, racing back to camp. They arrived just in time to find Lucifer, and Sera's mouth abruptly snapped shut, locking as she stared. She bowed deeply, mostly in fear and awe of this man. This was the god who had created her kind, had shaped them from the firey pits of hell and raised them onto Earth.

When the offer came up, Sera wanted to decline for the group but Lucifer took that out of her hands, asking each in his own order. When it arrived on her, she opened her mouth then shut it and shook her head, unsure what else to say, "I must decline."

Kai was next, giving a small shake of his head as he fell to the back of the group, for once not wanting any attention. Tatia asked much the same, blushing as he called her a princess and spoke of her parents. Most of the group knew none of these things, and here Lucifer was, bringing it up as if it was nothing. Those fears bubbled up and she tried to shove them back down, barely noticing Rey and Lucifer's mention of her as she swam in her worries of betrayals and death. Looking up she caught a look from Sera as she gestured for her to focus, giving her a warm, understanding nod. Tatia turned to Lucifer and simply shook her head, muttering an apology but needing to decline.

Last was Lairia, who was holding her kitten tightly to her, staying well behind Reynault. This demon held no good will, and she was smart enough to know that. Her box in his hands could easily bring out the destruction of the world too. While the others did not know this, her and Rey did, and she was glad when he declined.

"I will have to decline too," she piped up, "I will not allow this box in the hands of any, and no amount of reward can presuade me. I have a mission, and I cannot be led by temptation. So I respectfully decline."

Lucifer laughed at Laria's fear. "My dear I don't need your box for my plans. You think i don't know what my Father has planned for the destruction of this world? I've held both Grails, the blade Excalibur, the actual Cross of the Christ and more other powerful relics than you can possibly dream of. Including the Ark of the Covenant. Which with it's slightest protection makes your little gem look like nothing. If you must know I was actually going to sell it myself."

Drea could not help herself. "To who? And to what purpose?"

"To Cronos of course. he's trying another of his many comebacks. Thinks the little gem will help. He's wrong but who am i to argue? And he did make an astounding offer."

Drea gulped. "My Lord. you can't-"

"Oh Duldrea you wound me. i wouldn't have given him the real thing. Father wouldn't have allowed it in any event, but I planned on giving it to another old friend of mine. Set."

Drea nearly dropped Ebony at the mention of the name. Lucifer's eyes gleamed, the blue not so sweet and warm, and somehow speaking of the rivers of blood they had seen and reveled in over the many years of their existence. Elaya squeezed Sera's hand.

Rey gently pressed a hand to Laria's middle, protectively pushing her back away from this threat. "Why would you want to empower Set so? he's been a madman wandering in the desert for millenia!"

Drea bit her lip. "Yes... you.. you cannot give such might to him. Why would you do such a thing?"

Lucifer smirked wickedly. "because the time has come for the final renewal. Or at least Apep thinks so. And Set is the only one of your breed still functionally strong enough to stop the Chaos Viper." he looked at Laria and smiled. "So...give me the gem, help me save the world."

Rey pushed Laria back even further. "Master Satan you lie."

Lucifer's eyes flicked up to the vampire. "Do I?"

Rey nodded. "Just as you did when you claimed the creation of my kind. And of Seraphina's."

"But I did create your kinds."

Rey shook his head. "No. Your realm aided in our birth but you did not do it. Vampires are the children of the watchers. Direct descendants of angels and the daughters of Eve. Cursed with our thirst for our many sins, but blessed with our strength to protect humanity."

He nodded at Seraphina. "And as for her race, I have undeniable proof that Phoenixes existed in the Garden."

Lucifer cocked his head. "Oh?"

Rey nodded. "I've been there."

Lucifer's smile faltered, but he caught himself and sipped his tea. Then he spoke. "I would not have your ability to call you a liar Reynault. But how can I be certain of that?"

Rey pulled open his shirt revealing his bare chest, and over his heart a faint blue slash. "During the wars of my human existence I fled to the south. Got lost in the deserts. Wandered for years. Nearly died countless times. Finally i came upon a grotto. I followed the water, and suddenly I was within a Garden so alive, so vibrant I knew i was somewhere special. The animals are still there. They still speak. Including a bird of living fire. They nursed me to health, but forbade me to eat of a certain tree. I obeyed, until i found a fruit hidden beneath a bush. Such a beautiful piece. So sweet and succulent. So damning. I had eaten of the Tree of Life. The guardian fell upon me and smote me through the heart, but i could not die. I had been marked, and turned for my disobedience. I knew i had fallen for a trap. Not one of yours, but of my new kind. The animals wept to see me go, and gave me much aid, but they also forbid me to ever return. I have longed to, but the memory of the way vanished even as i walked it."

Lucifer stared at Reynault for a long while, then nodded. "Alright... perhaps you are right." he looked over at Seraphina. "And for the record i am no god. I tried for that title once. Never again. I know my fate and I will not rush to speed it on."

He turned, and once again somehow seemed to look each of them in the eye. "But the wars of this plane are still engaged. That stone can help end them."

Gerry spoke now. "But for which side?"

Lucifer smiled. "Not my problem. Lady Laria will you not help us bring peace to this world?"

Elaya looked at the sorceress and shook her head. She couldn't help it. She knew all too well what Lucifer was up to. He wanted to empower the mad. Yes the wars would end, but only to usher in even greater ones, including the greatest that would see his own child born into the world of men. She had known that vampires were not humanized demons, but she had never heard how Rey had been changed, and would never have guessed he had been to Eden itself. She did wonder about the creation of Phoenixes, but she wouldn't ask Lucifer. he would tell the truth, but only the parts he wanted them to know. She had little doubt Hellfire had been part of the formation of the birds of flame. How could it not? What was hotter than Hellfire?

Seraphina was floored. Her eyes jumped between Reynault and Lucifer, unsure what she was hearing. Was she not created by this demon? Then what? She had been told growing up and by all Phoenix's that their creation had been from satan himself. And now they were hinting at it not being true. Her grip on Elaya's hand got tighter and hotter, her skin growing warmer as her emotions grew more confused.

Meanwhile Lairia was well behind Rey now, both arms around Rhaegal keeping him close. The box was safety tucked away by her magic, so she wasn't worried about him simply snagging it, but he could indeed hurt them for it. The team needs to know. They can't go on not knowing. Not if Lucifer of all people wants it.

"This is no little stone," Lairia spoke, looking to Elaya and Seraphina, "the talisman in my box has the power to grant its user unlimited magical energy. It can make even the weakest magic-castor practically invincible with magic. We, as castors, are limited to our energy, and it controls how strong our spells can become. We can grow that energy and become stronger, but there are a few who have surpassed the rest," she paused then, her eyes falling on Lucifer and something sparked in them, as if she was hinting at something, "This...this talisman cannot fall into the wrong hands. It could easily bring about the destruction of the world."

"Then why don't you destroy it?" Tatia asked, keeping to Kai's side in the back, "Get Sera's fires to melt it."

"There is protective magic around it," she explained, "Trust me I've tried. That's why I need your team to help me get this across the continent. I know someone who can help contain this. And that is what we are still doing...containing this power. I will not allow this falling in the wrong hands."

She handed Rhaegal to Tatia who pulled him in close, then the sorceress stepped out from behind Rey, standing at his side, "I am respectfully declining your offer. And I'll ask you not insult me and offer again. There is nothing that will change my mind here."

Lairia's heart thudded, knowing Lucifer held much more power than her. But she had vowed herself to the protection of her box, and she would fight if she had to.

Lucifer stood, and Sera was suddenly alone, and Lucifer was back in his chair staring up at Elaya.

She was taller now, more powerfully muscled, and her skin bright red. She snarled her most vicious wolf snarl and Gerry would tell people for the rest of his life that he actually saw Lucifer, the Devil Himself, blink.

Elaya spoke very softly. "You do not approach our client High Demon. You have your answer. I know your methods too well. We decline the offer. What more is to be said you shall say seated."

Drea squeaked. "Elaya are you mad?"

Lucifer grinned, though his eyes lacked the conviction. "Indeed. Are you?"

She shook her head. "Lord Lucifer, High Demon of Hell, is the most charming and glamorous being ever created. When he glamors beings they never know it. But he can only do so if they fear him. I fear his power. i fear his knowledge. But I don't fear him."

As if the whole world was glass breaking they all felt released of the immense tension. Lucifer was no less, still impossibly power, old, and beautiful, but his control had snapped.

He sighed and sipped his tea, then looked up at Elaya. "You've gotten quicker my dear."

She smiled. "You truly have no idea."

Lucifer sighed, drained his tea, nodded to them, and was gone as if he was never there. Narxis was on Elaya immediately. "how did you do that? You....you can't possibly move that fast."

Elaya smiled. "Narxis what are my powers. Not ones i borrowed or was born with. What can i do that is solely mine?"

He cocked his head. "Well...I don't know."

She nodded. "Well I'll tell you my secret then. Speed. I'm the quickest and fastest were born or turned in all our long history. It's why I am what i am and why I can do what I do. I'm strong but not even in the top levels of my gender, let alone of my species. i'm a excellent tracker but my sisters could track a ghost through the oceans. My brothers are so magically powerful their howls can crumbles mountain ranges. My grandmother is a spellwolf of such skill she turned the moon into actual blood during a battle, while fending off a hundred magicians. The list goes on and on. My gift, my one true skill is my speed. I've always had it. That is why your master fears me and my pack. We are blessed by powers no other werepack has ever had or will have. We doesn't know what we are capable of."

Narxis nodded, stunned.

Elaya turned to Laria. "Who is your friend? And where is Sera?"

Gerry had grabbed the phoenix, sensing her disquiet, and drew her forward, pushing her gently into her lover's arms. Elaya kissed her softly then cupped her chin. "Are you well my love? Did what he, and Rey, say hurt you?" Her eyes burned daggers at Rey and the vampire had the grace to gulp nervously.

The fight seemed to end before it started, but Lairia's shoulders didn't relax even after Lucifer disappeared, still waiting for him to jump out of the shadows and attack. She seemed overly tense, her eyes scanning around as she answered Elaya's question.

"An old friend of my father's. Long story," she wasn't ready to explain her warlock heritage or her whole history. That was still for only Rey to know, "Needless to say, he wants this talisman locked up as badly as I do."

Her eyes kept twitching around, looking left and right for trouble before she turned and settled her eyes on Reynault's face, trying to calm her nerves, "Thank you for that. For what you do back there."

Meanwhile Sera had been lost in her own thoughts, and her heat only amplified when suddenly Elaya left. Her head snapped up and she was on her feet but then...he was gone. She wasn't sure what was going on until Gerry stepped up to guide her towards her lover, sensing her troubles.

"No Gerry don't!" she yelped at the last second before his hands touched her arm and the smell of burning flesh filled the air. While she didn't look heated, her cascade of emotions had definitely warmed her temperature, and it was much too hot for any of them, perhaps aside from Elaya, to touch her.

"Shit, I'm sorry," her hand fell over her mouth as she reached to him to help then recoiled her arm back, knowing she'd only do more damage. She didn't have a healing touch, and she never would. Sera was made for destruction, not for aide. It was moments like these that pained her for being a Phoenix, knowing she had caused him pain. And that confusion over her creation coupled with the upsetting fact she had hurt her friend made the Phoenix more troubled than ever. She was backing up, wanting space when she bumped into Elaya, who pulled her into her arms.

"Please," she whispered, just needing a second of space to calm her thoughts and settle, afraid she'd flare again, "No he didn't hurt me. I just...didn't know. I should move away. Till my temperature goes....erm, down. I don't want to burn anyone else."

Elaya arched an eyebrow then turned her lover to face Gerry who held up his entirely unmarked hand. "Sera I'm fine."

Elaya laughed. "Darling Gerry has never touched you with his bare hand. He likely never will. When you two first met you melted several of his bullets just standing near him him."

Gerry nodded smiling moving toward the redhead. "Sera look." he held up a rather odd looking glove, which was charred, and clearly formerly covered in skin. "it's a special alloy of non conductive metals, coated with asbestos, and layered with synthetic human skin. A present from Elaya's pack for when I have to deal with touch magic or such things. they just happened to be very useful when around you." He slipped the blackened thing on,clenched his fist and the skin fell away, then new flesh began to grow.

Elaya smiled. "We all make sure you can't hurt us even accidentally. We know how much that worries you."

Greey flexed the now very normal looking hand and held it out to Sera. "See? i also liked them because they don't have my scars." He drew the glove off, revealing his own unhurt hand again, and it was layered with scars of all sorts. "The gloves don't do much themselves, but they are useful. And alot better than buying new cloth ones every time i break the old ones."

Drea moved forward. "Take a breath Sera. You're letting yourself get upset and heat up. There is nothing to worry about...though we could use your heat for dinner. Would you mind?"

Elaya drew her lover away to where the meat was waiting, and just put Sera near it. She cupped the redhead face, entirely unhurt by the heat. "Alright now listen you. yes we take precautions. But we do that with everyone. Everyone has instaskin spray so we don't accidentally set off Rey's primal urges. We all have body locks to prevent Amitiel or Narxis from possessing us. We all have special protections or even earplugs against Tatia. We have wards against Drea." She said the last for a reason.

"Drea my love. Duldrea. The ultimate mom. Can you imagine why or how she would ever hurt any of us? of course not. But she gave them to us anyway. Because she might lose control, be tricked, or who knows. That's not a judgement against her. But when you live around beings who can do what we do, you take precautions. At home I have to make sure to never be in heat around my own father and brothers. The scent is too strong. That's not their fault. They've never taken me but they have been filled with a lust that is pretty scary. Kai was chased by crowds of women because of his pheromones. Its the nature of who and what we are."

She kissed her lover very softly. "I know you worry about us. And it's very sweet. But we are your friends. We want to be near you. If that means we have to be a little careful so be it. And for the record you are hardly the most dangerous here." Her eyes flicked toward Laria, reminding her lover that the wolf had not forgotten that first meeting.

~

Rey smiled at Laria and took her hand kissing them. "It was my pleasure my dear. Anything to aid a lady."

Narxis had drawn Tatia away to help with an interesting problem. He had found a small refilling pool of clean water, but he couldn't draw any of it. he took their very normal boiling pot and dipped it in. it filled almost instantly. Then he raised it and the water was gone. He looked at the siren. "Can you explain it?"
