It was a particularly calm night in Westhaven, one of those nights where the sounds of the surrounding forest became one of a ear deafening nature. The hour was fast approaching 12 midnight, but every single light in town was on, as if a great big parade was to be expected to roll down main street at any minute.
This was not the case though, since no one knew of Westhaven's existance. The only road that used to come through the town with a population less than 67 people became overrun with weeds and grass. It didn't matter any, the people of Westhaven had always been self-sufficient. Something that was brought upon them when they were exiled from the city of Lighthaven for not throwing away their pagan rituals that were still being practiced today. Lighthaven quickly died out after the split, where the remaining townsfolk of Lighthaven had moved when they saw the downfall coming.
Even though there was no parade coming, the old town of Westhaven still had reason to celebrate. This particular evening was the mark of the Summer solstace, one where the new sacrifice would be named and the one sacrifice who had reached the budding age of 16 would be marked to go down her path of enlightenment. It was enough to cause elation in the house of the Chamblins, for their daughters path of enlightenment would start tonight, while another family would be chosen by the towns elders, their new born named, blessed to be granted with her journey on her 16th birthday.
Mr. Chamblin called up to his wife as he grabbed his belongings and fixed his tie at the last moment. "Hurry up, we are going to be late." His wife was upstairs still, helping their daughter prepare herself for what was about to come. He could hear their murmurs pouring down the second floor. Calm and drowned out by the wood separating them.
Mrs Chamblin was upstairs humming an old ceremonial tune while tightening up her daughters dress, smiling as she looked at her in the mirror. "Beautiful. I am so envious of your journey! I had hoped that I would have been picked at my birthing, but my sister came out first." She grabbed her daughters hand and kissed her on the cheek. "Oh well, I suppose this is the better choice. I get to see my daughter marked and given up to the One Who Sows. Now come, lets go down and show your father how beautiful you look."
