A Warped Sense of Justice [Death Note] (Yuna & Reinholdt's 1x1)

Once the battle settled, the meal proceeded in almost complete silence. Anything else would have lessened the moment, and frankly would just be dull. That this girl was able to hold his attention for as long as she had was impressive. He hadn't felt this alive since... well, since L really. The price of being Kami he supposed.

Fortunately the dull part passed quickly enough. Light got out some cash to pay for the meal. All of it, of course. He did say it was his treat for her first day after all. Another day, perhaps, she can argue into paying her half if she's that type.

He checks his watch. "You're welcome. We should be fine as long as we don't linger. The school isn't terribly picky." Light stands up and offers his hand to help her up. "Walk you back? What do you have next?"

More than likely the rest of the day passes uneventfully.

It was intriguing but reassuring that the school could be pretty damn lax and allow the students to be off-campus for lunch. She didn't intend on using the notebook here, certainly not while nearby Light. However, if she really needed to work, she now knew it could be doable. Sakura would have to be very careful but the task was still possible to accomplish. Giving Light a nod of her head, her smile widened as she found herself back beside him. "Literature .. " she replied without a second thought, hinting she had already memorized her schedule.

Sure enough, the rest of that day had indeed gone mostly uneventful. The main thing that even happened to Sakura was Beligore trying to pester her during class. Her best saving grace? No one else could see him.

A week passed since Sakura began attending the school. It'd gone ... well enough. She took every chance to speak to Light when she could. However, a lot of her teachers had kept her and the entire class busy with work so there weren't as many chances to do that. That being said, it made each opportunity to be alone very precious.

Sakura had finished getting dressed and was ready to head out. There was, however, one thing she'd do before that. She hadn't used the notebook the entire week and thus was overdue. Sakura had, however, researched criminals whom were free whenever she finished her assignments and wrote them down on a separate piece of paper that wasn't attached to the Death Note.

Walking next to her dresser drawer, she pulled the parchment out and decided to start with the first name listed, beginning to neatly write it down.

Daisuke Tsuchi, drive-by shooting
At 07:00 AM, while stuck in morning rush hour traffic, Daisuke will be shot by a random motorist in a car. The bullet will go right through his head, killing him instantly.

It wasn't very well known but Daisuke had been, for a while, a serial rapist. He had supposed stopped his lifestyle due to not committing any crimes over the past several years. But in Sakura's eyes, that wasn't good enough. He had still sinned and thus needed to be punished.

"Heh, still being careful about that, are ya?" came Beligore's voice from behind her. The rhetorical question made her scoff in annoyance.

"How many times have I brought this up? I don't yet need too much attention on who I am and what I can do. I'll choose a time to do that. Until then, yes, I am being careful. Problem?"

A few seconds of a pause lingered before he would finally reply with a "Nah" only to add "So, when you two gonna kiss already?"

Sakura quickly turned as she shot a glare towards Beligore. "First off, I don't think he sees me quite like that. Secondly, none of your fucking business. Now then ... I need to go lest I become late."

And with that, Sakura turned on her heels and walked out of her residence, heading towards Daikoku Private Academy.

It didn't take long for Light to check on Sakura Takesho's background. Having ready access to both L's network and the NPA resources made it disappointingly easy really. While there was a plane crash caused by terrorists six months ago, terrorists Kira made sure got their justice this week, neither of Sakura's parents were listed in the plane manifest. Further investigation revealed that her parents hadn't died from a plane crash at all, but were actually murdered. Police had a suspect, but the records indicated not enough evidence to pull off an arrest. The suspect's name seemed familiar.

Hitsuki Takeda.

Yes. Kira remembered that name from the news. Police thought they were being clever holding it from the media. He died anyways from... what was finally deemed a murder by an escaped asylum inmate. It was all very... coincidental. Too coincidental if you asked Kira.

But why would Sakura give such a flimsy lie? True, she told him the story before knowing his dad worked with the NPA. And most others wouldn't even bother checking beyond the fact that the plane crashed. The lie still felt sloppy. Which, ironically may be the best thing going for her. If she truly had something to hide, she wouldn't have chosen a story that could so readily be disproven with research.

So what then? She was just embarrassed? She'd rather admit they died to terrorists than a murderer? Maybe... she felt guilty about their deaths in some way? It happened to survivors of tragedies that they felt guilty for any number of reasons. That was always possible. Still, there seemed to be something more there. But it felt emotional rather than logical. Did it come down to that old adage about women? He'd find out the truth one day, but it didn't feel like any sort of rush was needed on the matter.

Beyond that, Kira reluctantly admitted he enjoyed her company. Getting attached in any real way would be a mistake of course, but no one since L had managed to hold his attention quite like she had. A part of him even looked forward to school now as he started to find himself going a little out of the way to walk along the route she would take on the off-chance of meeting her halfway there.

Honestly, Sakura had no real excuse for the sloppy lie. And she was having a mental cursing fit. The best saving grace? Even if Light could track Sakura's parents names and even Hitsuki's, it didn't mean a damn thing. Well, not in the sense of her having used the Death Note. Moreover, no one even began to suspect her of owning the Shinigami eyes. Those few facts were keeping her calm, at least on the outside. Deep down, she was a bit nervous. Thankfully, her infatuation with Light was always an easy way to keep her distracted from over-worrying.

There was definitely a small truth about Sakura feeling a bit guilty on her parents' death. She had tried to convince them even before they got onto the plane not to leave, believing it'd be a waste of time. Turned out she was right in her own way. But all in all? It had seemed like the best thing to say at the time.

What a fucking idi --- never mind! No one still knows so just ... forget about it ...

Taking a deep breath, Sakura continued walking. The sounds of approaching footprints made her head turn and a smile cross her face.

"Morning, Light-san!"

Over the past several days they had been together, she'd felt herself liking her classmate more and more. It genuinely pained her to even consider that Kira could very well be literally right beside her.

But when all was said and done, everything would depend on how things turned out when she decided to truly reveal herself. Until then, it would remain a mystery.

"Have a good weekend?" she added, slowing her pace a bit so she didn't walk too far ahead of Light.

"Good morning Sakura-san."

Light accelerated until he was side by side with Sakura, subconciously leading his footsteps to fall one tenth of a second ahead of hers.

"Yes, I did. It was relaxing." One benefit of being Kira is truly enjoying your work. Eeking out justice upon criminals was carthatic.

"How about yourself? Your first week here didn't overwhelm and overrun your weekend I hope?" Light inquired, head half-turned to watch her from the corner of his eye as they moved ever forward. "Read any good books? Better yet, write any?" He smiled, referring no doubt to her hobbies of reading and writing she mentioned one week ago and not the Death Note.

Sakura's mind briefly went back to when she had left her residence. She tried to quickly think on what time it had been when she had left.

Hm ... around 6:45? Give or take a few?

That being said, it meant her recent writing should come true relatively soon. Until then, she just had to keep killing time. And Light had all but volunteered to help out with that by keeping her company.

"Busy but productive. The school seemed to waste little to no time in giving out a lot of assignments. But at the same time, it's kind of a nice change in pace. Most other academies I had been at were too simple. So I'm actually enjoying the academic challenge. I think I'm better seeing why my parents chose for me to go here as opposed to anywhere else. I wish I'd been able to properly thank them."

The last sentence made her frown for a few seconds before she waved it off, smiling once more as she looked back to Light.

"Hm ... mainly what our literature class has been assigning us. I've been trying to write or read anything for leisure. I've started doing a bit of both, though not as much as I've wanted. Still, progress is progress I suppose."

As they continued to walk, Sakura couldn't help but notice line after line of cars beside them, signaling they were nearby a set of morning traffic. Her smile threatened to form into a smirk as she glanced briefly over, wondering if this would be the same location or not. That had, admittedly, been one thing she hadn't specified. Ah well. It wouldn't mean anything even if the scene played out in front of Light's eyes.

No one has anything on you .. nothing concrete for damn sure.

"Ugh, this is always the part I hate about walking in the mornings; traffic. The noises make it difficult to enjoy the scenery. Anyway, I've been trying to start up on reading The Crucible. It's interesting how some people can get paranoid over something that may not even have existed like witchcraft. And yourself? You been able to read or write anything that isn't a law book?" she joked.
