Lucca Carbone
"Boss," panted Skinny after flinging the door open to Lucca's office. The portly man gone out to station some men on the street as a final preparation for Lefty's upcoming meeting and had run as fast as he could to the back office when he saw Ruby. "Boss, she's here... the redhead. She's at the bar right now! She's been there drinking for a while!"
Lefty straightened from the ledger he had been examining. Running illegal cash operations, pretty much all of his businesses fell into that camp, meant he had to be extra vigilant about his men embezzling money. The consequences of being caught were quite severe, but that didn't stop idiots from trying now and then. Aside from trying to hire trusted managers, usually with family ties, Lucca had to make sure he reviewed all the books every week to look for strange trends in cash receipts. Not the glamorous part of his job, but one you had to do yourself as a capo.
"What, here?! Right now?" Lefty replied, looking startled and then troubled. The girl had a habit of popping up before raids and he was beginning to view her as a herald of bad luck, even if she had warned him last time. Her timing tonight was troublesome given the meeting he had planned with a rival gangster with whom he was currently in a bloody turf war. If the cops were to come, things could get dicey with De'Angelo. The man would already be on edge coming into Lefty's stronghold with just two guards. "Dammit."
Lucca cursed his bad luck and glanced at the clock. He still had thirty minutes at least before De'Angelo arrived. Plenty of time to get some more information out of Ruby, and maybe a means to get in touch with her. Pausing at the full length mirror by the door, Lefty made sure his pin-striped blue suit was in order and adjusted the red tie that peeked out above his light grey vest. There, he looked as impeccable as always.
With a wink at the handsome Italian he saw in the mirror, he opened the door and headed out into the quiet speakeasy. This early in the evening on a weeknight there were very few patrons, just the die hard alcoholics and a couple or two getting an early start before dinners or going to a show. Ruby was easy to spot at the bar, her auburn hair spilling down her back as she started to rise. It looked like she'd left cash on the counter and was about to leave. Lucca quickened his stride and reached her while she still had her back to him.
"Hello, Ruby, so nice to see you again," Lefty murmured in her ear, his hand casually touching the small of her back. This close, the sweet smell of her perfume and lingering fragrance of shampoo in her lustrous hair filled his nose and made him slightly heady. Just the feel of the palm of his hand resting against her was electric, the heat of her skin radiating through the thin satin and lace fabric of her dress. And when her eyes met his, he found it hard to not shiver as they sparkled at him while wide with surprise. She was all dolled up as well, more makeup than during their last meeting and the contrast of her porcelain white skin with the rosy accents on her cheeks and dark mascara was striking. He was suddenly very aware of how close he was to her, so close he could lean down and kiss those full lips, dark red with lipstick. "I was wondering if we could have a private chat. In my office."
