Sarcasm, from you? I'm shocked!

It appears you're losing your touch, I didn't wake up to a post!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've tended to stick to modern stories, because it's what I know best and enjoy, but lately I've had an urge to branch out, and take on some historical (Silv; I blame you, XD), and possibly light fantasy and post apocalyptic scenarios.

I don't where it came from, but I've been hit with a sudden craving for a story set in Victorian London in the time of Jack the Ripper; gas lamps, street whores, thick fog, cobblestone lanes, dark, dingy pubs, violence, sex and betrayal. Possibly also involving a royal conspiracy. It's an unformed idea, but now one I'm definitely going to try and develop a plot for.

I regret nothing! ;]

Although I am surprised that you'd willingly admit to it now! And you have me intrigued by that little idea you're developing.

As a heads up you should be expecting a reply from me sometime soon tonight. :)

Oh sure, you choose now to want to do something historically. Damn you!

Were you disappointed that you didn't wake up to a post? Because I'm sure if I concentrated hard enough, I could respond right now. Maybe I should since you were so upset that I didn't post. I'm sorry my love, I didn't realize it would make you so sad :[

I didn't think you would!

You're just very persuasive, Silv, and I can admit the error of my ways, XD. It's taken a while to convince myself that I'd be able to do it justice, but I'm now very much looking forward to trying my hand. You may need to give me a history lesson, though!

My idea is rough, but I think it could be developed into something fun.

It goes without saying, I loved the reply.

It now appears I'll be writing two historical stories in the near future, XD.

I'm always disappointed not to get to get a post from you, Mail. But it's okay, I wouldn't want you to stress your brain by expecting too fast of a response. You've been working so hard, just take some time, and relax.

RE: Quix's Writing Samples And Random Bullshit Thread (Comments Welcome)

Well yes. :D I love historical stories. I'm currently reading books by Mary Jo Putney and they're all romance novels set in the 1800s. It's...perfect :D

I'll take a month. Promise. I don't want you struggling. That's no fun. You said it yourself, it shouldn't be a struggle but just fun.

RE: Quix's Writing Samples And Random Bullshit Thread (Comments Welcome)

I'm definitely going to have to work on developing that plot more, and may create both a 'light' and a 'dark' version to suit different tastes. I am contemplating having it involve the Royal Family, and a cover-up or conspiracy; possibly with one of them as the Ripper. Insanity isn't a rare occurrence in the Windsor bloodline, XD.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Has anyone else had that story which ends prematurely, and just when think you've let go of it, returns to gnaw at you? Most come to a natural conclusion, or are ceased with agreement between partners, due to real-life time commitments/lack of time/loss of muse and the like, but every now and there's another which both wish to continue, but for some reason, can't, and it feels like unfinished business.

I cleaned out my inbox yesterday, deleting mostly old OoC chatter, and my finger hovered over particular folder, then decided not to delete it, in the vain hope that my partner would eventually return. That we didn't get to write what we had planned is gnawing at me again; but I'll get over it. Eventually, XD

I adore that quote:
"Reserve your right to think, for even to think wrongly is better than not to think at all."

I totally saved it onto my computer. I really, really like it.
Hope you don't mind my shameless thievery. :)

*wanders off to look up Mary Jo Putney*

RE: Quix's Writing Samples And Random Bullshit Thread (Comments Welcome)

Welcome to the land of the light, Chanti. Or at least out of the shadows!

No, go ahead and thieve all you like. I think that may have been how it came to be on this page in the first place, XD

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And I had to place this song here, which was also on one of my threads, because when I'm in the right mood, such as now, I just adore it. For some reason it seems appropriate for a cold, windy and rainy night that's telling me winter is on its way. Nick Cave, one of my favourite Australian artists, with Kylie Minogue, 'Where the Wild Roses Grow':

RE: Quix's Writing Samples And Random Bullshit Thread (Comments Welcome)

My brains not in a writing mood, so as usual, it's instead turned to random ramblings.

I received a cold call request a week or so ago, which made me realise just how much my writing, and preferences, are evolving. The approach was quite interesting, however I was put off by the fact that she only wrote in first person, which is a little ironic really, considering the fact that when I first started using this site around fifteen months ago, I'd never written a thing in my life, except for IM first-person smut stories, and refused for months to consider third-person. Now, there's no way I could go back to writing it.

In regards to my preferences, they've just begun to shift lately, and as mentioned previously, I'm looking to move outside of the modern stories I do now. However, the things that will never change - a prerequisite to maintain my interest - are the types of female personalities I will write against, and that the story must be character-based.

What I mean by character-based is that it is they who take precedence over all else; where it is their actions, motivations and desires that drive events, rather than it being external events or circumstances which drive the character's actions and motivations. Give me 'Lost in Translation', and 'Leaving Las Vegas' over 'Star Wars' and 'Superman' any day. If that's actually the correct definition, or if I even achieve what I think I enjoy most in that regard, I'm unsure. Sometime's it's hard to see the forest for the trees.

One of the major reasons for my aversion to taking up historical or fantasy roles in the past has been because of concerns that a concentration on setting/time/attributes would over-ride the compoments of the story that I actually write for, but I've now realised that, with the right partner, it's not necessarily the case, and I'm keenly anticipating trying my hand at them with a couple of my current collaborator's in crime.

Another thing I've found fun, with Silva and I having brought back Adam and Sophie from our first time writing together, is the concept of having multiple scenes with one partner all somehow linked together, no matter the time-frame or setting. It appears now, that when we do get to that historical story, the main characters may well be forebears of the ones in our current modern day scene.

My random brain has somehow made the connection between that, and Wilbur Smith's following of the fortunes of the Courtney's and Ballantyne's throughout the centuries; and brought forth another concept which appeals to me; a pre-colonial African setting, where an abundance of wild animals still roamed the plains, and the hunters become the hunted.

Mali, maybe Jinx and Parker should return for a night in The Manor?

RE: Quix's Writing Samples And Random Bullshit Thread (Comments Welcome)

I think the main reason I find historical settings appealing is because I can add so much to a character's depth based on events that happened in a specific era, or just to explore different cultures. It's rare to actually get caught up in historical accuracies unless you or your partner study history, and even then most people don't seem to mind a mistake here and there. I just feel that sometimes playing a courtesan/prostitute from late 1400s Italy could be more fun than playing a modern-day stripper, for the simple fact that being a courtesan was viewed as an actual profession then, and there's wasn't as much stigma surrounding it as much as today's culture or even the Italian Renaissance culture from the late 1500s.

I've never actually written anything in first person perspective, and I feel really weird when I attempt it. It's like... Too personal for me? I creep myself out with it. O_O

RE: Quix's Writing Samples And Random Bullshit Thread (Comments Welcome)

I know what you mean Aria, and I'm finding the idea more attractive day by day. As far as the historical accuracies go, I've also hesitated because, regardless of what my writing partners thoughts are on it, I'm not one who likes to get things wrong or make silly mistakes.

However, I can put that aside, particularly if I'm writing with someone that I'm already comfortable with, and similar to your 'Courtesan', I think writing in a Victorian London setting, for example, would provide a great atmosphere, and give the story a unique slant. It's just that a lot of the approaches I receive have the setting or fantastical attributes as the first priority, with the characters and their interactions seemingly secondary to that external world.

First-person is a lot different, and more personal, and makes it extremely difficult to cater for multiple characters. For me, it was just that I was so used to it, and never having written a 'story' before, it took me a while to figure out 'Why third-person?'.

Funny thing is, the novel I'm reading at the moment is written in first person, and I'm enjoying it!

I'M SO TIRED AND RAGING PISSED FROM ALL THIS CODING I'M- (forcing myself to do) -DOING.
I can't get it right and it's driving me crazy and I just want it to be all nice and pretty
But I can't if that ONE part of the code messes up and I can't find where to fix it.
//momentarily rages everywhere.

Ugh gosh I'm so tired.
Help me.

I send very many kudos to those that can right in first person.
It's really awkward for me? But I try and do it anyways.
But I don't think I'd have it in me to do a WHOLE role-play like that.
Like Ari, it'd creep me out too, lol.

I'd offer to help you with that coding issue, Lait, but you'd probably regret it, if you accepted, XD. I'll just wish you good luck instead.

The one who approached me said that she didn't mind if her partner wrote in third, but the contrast would just be too jarring for me.

If that coding's really getting on your nerves, step away from it a while, get some rest, and come back. It's amazing how sometimes when you do that, you can immediately identify the problem.

As of now, my request threads are officially closed. I'm always flitting between being perfectly comfortable with what I have, and feeling I may be attempting to take on too much, and I know I've said it before, but this time I'm not going to bump for at least a month so that I can fully concentrate on the stories, and wonderful partners, I already have. Just making a public declaration, because I'm not a guy who likes to be seen going against his word, XD.

Feel free to slap me if I break it (And a special mention to the one partner who did take the opportunity to remind me with a slap when I made this offer previously; though I suspect only because she has violent tendencies, and had been waiting for an excuse).

Hue hue hue....

I do believe it hasn't been a month good sir. Paying the piper is a terrible thing.
(Though we are still in debate of whether you actually like the slap or not.)

Hey, it was just a test to see if anyone had been listening. Apparently the answer to that question is yes!
(As to the slapping thing, let's keep that between us, shall we? XD)

Go on Jolie, let that mischevious spirit run loose. Just this once! Then again, maybe not, you'll probably enjoy it too much, and won't be able to get the genie back in the bottle!

Spending half of the work day in a 'Vision and Goal Setting' Session. I don't mind it too much, except that along with work-related goals, everyone is meant to share personal goals. Now, I, being a private individual, believe the word 'personal' is there for a reason. As usual, I'll make up something that sounds good, on the fly, and keep the real ones to those people in my life that I actually choose to share with.

RE: Quix's Writing Samples And Random Bullshit Thread (Comments Welcome)

Friday, and looking forward to one of my favourite days of the year tomorrow; ANZAC Day.

ANZAC stands for 'Australian And New Zealand Army Corps', and April 25th marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War. It's now the date we commemorate all of those who fought in War.

Gallipoli

On the morning of 25 April 1915, the Anzacs set out to capture the Gallipoli peninsula in order to open the Dardanelles to the allied navies. The objective was to capture Constantinople (now Istanbul in Turkey), the capital of the Ottoman Empire, and an ally of Germany.

The Anzacs landed on Gallipoli and met fierce resistance from the Ottoman Turkish defenders. Their plan to knock Turkey out of the war quickly became a stalemate, and the campaign dragged on for eight months.

At the end of 1915, the allied forces were evacuated. Both sides suffered heavy casualties and endured great hardships. Over 8,000 Australian soldiers were killed (our total population at the time was approx 4.9m). News of the landing on Gallipoli and the events that followed had a profound impact on Australians at home. The 25th of April soon became the day on which Australians remember the sacrifice of those who had died in the war.
Not only a sombre day, marked by Dawn Services and commemorative events, it's also one of national pride in a country which isn't particularly 'patriotic'; or at least not as overtly so as some others; but also one that's great fun.

Pubs and Clubs aren't allowed open to midday, but once they are, it is the only day of the year on which (apart from Casino's) the traditional gambling game of two-up is legal; and it's played virtually everywhere.

Two-up

Two-up consists of a person buying control of the 'kip' (a wooden board), for any amount of money he/she wishes, then entering the ring where three coins are placed on the kip by a 'Ringer'. The one in control of the kip always has heads, and bets are taken from outside the ring to cover the amount he/she has put in before, to the call of 'Come In Spinner', the coins are thrown in the air. If they come up majority heads, the thrower doubles their money, and throws again. Those who bet tails, lose. If majority tails comes up, the Ringer will pay out their winnings, and the next person in line takes the kip.

If three lots of heads in a row are thrown, the person with the kip can take the money won, or elect to leave all, or part of it, with the Ringer, and continue to throw; needing to get another three heads in a row to have the choice again.

Where a lot of the fun comes in is that whilst this is occurring, people outside the ring are also wagering on heads or tails against each other; with money being thrust in the air, and people screaming for others to accept their bet. It's a madhouse, and individual wagers on just one throw of the coins can range from $5, up to thousands.
At six pm, all two-up games must shut down, then a minutes silence is held, and the Ode To The Fallen, and Last Post, played.

It's just a great, fun, awesome day where everyone seems to come together, and this year being the 100th anniversary will make it even more special.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On a side-note, a couple of years ago, I had control of the 'kip' and threw seventeen heads in a row, with the crowd who'd bet against me starting to yell and scream and swear that the coins weren't being thrown correctly, at around the fourth, and getting more vocal with each turn. I was in with a friend and not sure how much we won, as both of us were a little under the weather by that stage, but I know if I'd managed to throw the eighteenth it would have been a nice earner. However, I may not have made it out alive, XD

Needless to say I won't be around much on the weekend.

Sounds like you have a full weekend Quix, hope you enjoy it!

For anyone wanting a laugh I recommend this gem of a video that an Australian friend of mine sent to me. Pretty much fell out of my chair laughing at the vegemite bit. There's no way I would ever eat any of that! Tim tams on the other hand..

And also this one that I sent back! The fact that y'all don't have cinnamon rolls makes me very sad. :(

Mostly yesterday, Silv. Was a great day, now I just need use today to recover, XD

Thanks for the laugh, that was hilarious. I think someone should have told them that you don't eat it off a spoon, but instead, slathered on bread, in a sandwich, with cheese! This will change your mind, however you may not be able to get the jingle out of your head for a while.

(Edit: For anyone who wants further relevant hilarity, I recommend this from the amazing, and seemingly able to find such things, anytime, anywhere, Jolie's journal)

Cinnamon rolls sound delicious, I'll have to introduce them!

If my headache settles down enough, I might try to start drafting a reply to that novel you left me :) Could take a day or two though.

RE: Quix's Writing Samples And Random Bullshit Thread (Comments Welcome)

I've had the (dis)pleasure of trying vegemite, and I must say, bread, cracker, what have you. I had the same reaction as that video. XD

As for the Australians trying stuff, I always loose it at the part where their eating the Butterfingers and he says it would make a great McFlurry and they inform him we have one and he just seems so utterly amazed and shocked. XD

That and the guy that says, 'like everything fun in Australia we get it banned.' XD

But to keep the beauty of these videos. This one is also beautiful to watch.
