Northman smiled thinly, listening to her words. Killing a guard, eh? Well, he would be able to work around that. The walk to the training yard was a meandering one, or at least the choice of path that he took was. When he entered the yard, he did note that there were several officials scattered around the edges, come to see the notorious Northman there to see how the guards fared. There were a few grizzled men waited for him, all of them showing the scars of comabt on their faces.
"Northman! We've set aside some practice weapons for you. Who will you face first?" One of the men asked, gesturing to the five men spread out. The large axe simply slid from a carry position to a ready one, and he made sure his shield was seated properly.
"All of you. Now. Take up your arms, and come at me. I need to see what you're able to do." The barbarian ordered. The guards exchanged glances, but lifted their weapons, and spread out into a ring. And then they were coming at him.
The axe swept round, crashing into a shield, and breakingthe frame of it, sending the owner to the ground in a rush. As a sword swept in at him, the Northman raised his own shield, and took the blows easily. The sound of metal on stone came, causing a moment of surprise in the attacker, who then got a much closer look at the shield crashed into his face. It seemed it did indeed have a good deal of stone in the construction. No wonder it was so heavy. Northman kicked out, forcing a man back a few paces, while swinging his axe around. The shield was sheared straight through this time, barely missing the man's head. The guard hopped back to get distance, but a thunderous punch snapped his neck back and laid him out. Northman turned to see the last two guards keeping back, hands raised.
"If you goal was to find us wanting in combat against you, then I assure you, task completed. Where by all the Gods nd their mothers did you learn to fight like that Northman?" A guard asked.
"The wilds of the North. And I was not th best my tribe could field." He answered. The snawer paled the faces of the guards. "Inform your guards. Proper training begins in the morning. And inform the others that you will be needing new weapons. Axes large enough to split a man. If you mean to defend this place, you will need to be able to make clean kills in less time." Northman barked as he strode away from the field. It was as he expected. Given time, he'd be able to kill his way through this palace on his own. Maybe. He glanced up to see that there had been a window in wall of the meeting room. He wondered if the Empress had caught the show.
