Running Away ((Blair1216&&Lady_Squall_Lionheart))

“I do.”Jason said looking thoughtful, before nodding. “I’d been ready to do so, had you been a danger.”he muttered wrinkling his nose a ltitle at the cigar, but not saying anything. Though like a serpent his sense of smell wasn’t as strong as his sense of sight, it was still stronger then a humans. “So I shouldn’t worry about hurting her?I keep worrying that I will…”he said biting his lip before smirking a little. It amused him that the other was so worried.

“Its not mine.Dont worry, I’m not that stupid.”he said scowling a little, but shrugging a little, not about to explain his relationship with vera, before standing. “If you should need anything to, let me know. I don’t know how much help I could be, but…”He shrugged looking amused as he headed for the door. “goodbye.”he said as he left, heading for the door.

“Vera?”Jason asked as he opened the house door, talking quietly, not wanting to wake her up if she was asleep. Moving into the living room when he heard the tv still on.

Vera was sound asleep when he got him, cuddled up on the couch with the blanket wrapped around her. The fire was nearly out in the fireplace, giving the house a bit of a chill, and the television was still on and running re-runs of all the popular Christmas movies... She tried so hard to stay up and wait for him, but she was tired from standing up all day in heels with her growing belly making her back hurt. The poor girl ended up having to spend Christmas Eve on her own after all, but she didn't blame him. She knew that this was a big deal, or he wouldn't have gone. Or at least that's what she started to tell herself when she started to doze off...

Jason winced a little as he realized he had indeed left her on her own for Christmas, swallowing hard as he considered it. Rubbing a hand over his face he wondered how to make it up to her, feeling guilty for even leaving, he should have just told chad to shove it, and deal with things later instead of doing it tonight. Even if had known it was important, he shouldn’t have left her. Sighing softly as he leaned down he picked her up before heading towards his bedroom, tucking her into the bed before crawling in with her. Snuggling up against her back holding her gently, willing to try. Not sure if he could trust himself, but hoping that he could.

The next morning, Annabel stirred as the sunlight pooled in front the window. She yawned, her eyes slowly opening to see his bedroom. When she noticed where she was, she smiled. He may not have been there last night, but he cared enough to take her to his bed and try to hold her... And that had her heart melting. He was trying so hard, and she knew it. The man was desperately trying to break down his walls for her, and she wasn't sure what she did to deserve that. "Merry Christmas," she whispered ever so gently. She didn't make a move, staying on her side and staring at his arms that were wrapped around her. She knew better that to scare him, so she hoped she could just wake him gently.

"How did last night go?" she asked gently, eager to know exactly what the doctor wanted from Jason, and what he offered Jason to actually make him go see him.

Jason stirred slowly, nuzzling her face against her neck before rolling away, laying back on his back as he stretched, waking slowly, not realizing that he probably wouldn’t hurt her anymore. Despite having only slept with her a few times, the man had gotten used to having her around, so much so that he didn’t wake as viciously as he had when he’d first met her. Sighing quietly at her question he smiled.

“It went well. He…he found others like me. Changed…ones. I mean, ones that aren’t…normal. He wants to help, gave me money to help…if I’d stay in touch and let him know if we needed anything, and he’s a specialist in conditions like this…he’s going to help me keep check on the instincts and problems as they came up…”he muttered, babbling a little, not sure how to explain, not sure how to even begin explaining.

Vera rolled on her side and propped her head up on her hand, smiling down at him. He seemed genuinely happy with how last night went, and that he was confident in the doctor. Reaching over, she leaned down and gently placed a kiss to his cheek. It was the first time she had done that, for she was always careful around him, waiting for him to make the first move. However, she was starting to see a change in him. It seemed that he was starting to get adapted to her presence.

"Now you are the one doing the rambling," she said, grinning a bit. She was relieved to know that he was not in any danger, not even taking the time to think that this could have also put herself in danger. "So... There's more like you? And he can help you?" At the mention of money, she tilted her head to the side. Why would this man give Jason money? She didn't understand, and she definitely didn't think Jason risked everything to get money to help her and the baby.

Gently standing up from the bed, she reached over for her robe and wrapped it around herself. "I'll be right back," she said, moving into her bedroom, then coming back a few moments later with a medium sized wrapped box.

"Merry Christmas," she said, blushing as she handed him the present, "It's nothing special..."

Since she had been forced not to work near as much as she used to, she had taken up the hobby of knitting, using some supplies she found in the hall closet that must have been the old woman's who used to live here. It was a rough start, but she managed to knit a few things, and that included Jason's present, which was a long, black scarf, finger-less gloves, and matching hat. She knew he didn't like being cold, but was forced to work out in the cool weather every day, so she thought she would help out...

Jason smiled looking at her, looking sleepy before looking startled as she kissed his cheek, but relaxing after a moment when that was all she did. “Well, I’m allowed to every once in awhile.”He said smiling a little, hesitating before nodding. “The…company….that changed me…also took others to change.”he said looking away trying to figure out how to do. “This…chad, is one of the original doctors, but he left when he realized just how…immoral it was. So he’s not finding, and helping them.”He said nodding a little.”He can help. Hopefully.”He said smiling laughing quietly as she got up, frowning a little as he started unwrapping the present.
Delighted laughter escaping as he saw it, nodding a little.”Thanks vera. You’re right, not something that would be something special to anyone else, but that you cared enough to make sure I was warm…”he muttered smiling wider, reassuring her that he liked her present, even if he was babbling a little, slipping away to go get her present before returning with it, holding the smallish box out, having seen the bracelet(the one that says it takes courage to grow up and be who you really are), and needed to get it for her.

Vera opened the present, and when she did, a bright smile spread across her face. Her fingers moved over the engraved silver as she read the quite... She loved it, clearly, because it showed exactly how much he knew her. Hell, this showed that he knew her better than any other person that she ever grew up with in New York. "Thank you, Jason," she said, grinning up at him, "This is perfect."

Putting the bracelet on the nightstand table, she stood up and wrapped her robe around herself. "I'm going to go make you some breakfast," she said, and with that, she headed into the kitchen to whip up some pancakes and sausage.

When they sat down to eat breakfast, she looked over at him with curiosity. "So, when does he want to see you again?" she asked, raising her eyebrows. She was still a little skeptical about this Chad guy, but maybe that was because she was starting to become protective of Jason. She didn't want anyone to hurt him or take him away... It would absolutely break her heart. "I have another doctor's appointment tomorrow, but if you need to go see him, it's okay," she said, nodding to him, "It's just to check on my fluids... Which is just great, because these extra appointments on top of having to quit the job at the diner is making money pretty tight." With that, she let out a frustrated huff.

Jason smiled, relieved as he saw her just how much she liked it. Nodding at her words he laughed quietly. “I saw it town one day, and just had to get it for you.”he said smiling at her, yawning as she got up.”Okay.”He sid already getting up to.

Settling down at the table he sighed softly, looking down at the table as he thought before shrugging.”Not until January. He has to go take care of some of the others.”He said smiling slightly. Starting to eat. Smiling at her words, “No. I’m going with you. I’ll feel better hearing it from the doctor that everything is fine, instead of hearing it just from you.”he winced a little. “I mean, I trust you to tell me things, but…I feel better hearing it from her.”He sighed softly before swallowing hard, not sure what to say. Not sure how to bring it up.

Reaching to the counter he took the check chad had given him before sliding it across the table for her. “This is for us.”He muttered blushing a little.

Vera tilted her head to the side, surprised at his reaction. It was clear that he cared a lot for this child, so much so that it warmed her heart. And in all honesty, he was probably right in insisting to come to the appointment, because she would definitely down play anything that the doctor said, especially if it had to do with her resting. "Okay," she said, then looked looked down at the check. Her eyes went wide, and she dropped her fork with a startling clatter. "Oh my God, Jason."

She picked up the check, seeing that it was signed by Dr. Chad Ortz. Biting her lip, she shook her head. Her eyes were sad. "Jason... This is your money. I can't ask you to spend it on me. You deserve to have this. It's supposed to pay you back for your suffering."

She felt guilty, because she didn't understand exactly how much Jason was starting to care for her. She thought he was just trying to be nice, when he was actually feeling compelled to take care of the child like his own.

Jason swallowed hard, nodding.”I know. its a lot.”He muttered before frowning at her, looking confused, though he quickly hid the expression, and the hurt that stung him that she was turning down the money. “I’ll use some of it. I don’t think you’ll use the whole thing you know. I’ll build that garage I wanted, and maybe get a actual car instead of the bike.”He said frowning at her, trying to sort through the instincts that were driving him to lash out because she was turning down his help when he knew that she needed it, instincts driving him to force it. but the human part of her knew that he couldn’t force her, he’d just have to convince her to accept it.

Vera could see the hurt in his face, and pushing her own stubborness aside, she shook her head. "Okay, okay," she said, "But only for bills and the baby." She bit her lip and tilted her head to the side, watching him carefully. The first moment she met him, she was sure that he was the biggest asshole on the planet, and now she was starting to see that he was a better man than she deserved.

"Jason?" she whispered, "Why... Why are you being so nice?"

Her stomach flipped, because all of the sudden, she realized that this may not be a fling at all. That she might be falling for him, and she wondered if he was falling for her... She wondered if this man was quietly trying to tell her that he wanted to take care of her and the baby, and she wondered if that was a good or bad thing. While she could see herself with Jason forever (their quiet, modest life was quite nice), they were both runaways. How would this all work?

Before he could even answer, Vera let out a yelp and put her hand to her stomach. "Oh, ow..." she said, taking a deep breath.

“Good.”He said looking pleased before starting at her question, frowning. “…do you want me to go back to being a asshole?”he said looking annoyed because he had tried, so hard to break down the walls that had him being a ass to most people. But his instincts had him wanting to be nicer to her, to take care of his mate and child, even if he wasn’t sure he was his, and the babe wasn’t his. He’d claimed them, at least to himself, so it was making it hard to separate his life into what needed to be, to protect her. Knowing he should keep her away from him, but not able to do it.

“What? What’s wrong?”he said looking at her worriedly, swallowing hard to not jump on her and demand a answer, and look her over himself. feeling anxious as he watched her.

Annabel shook her head and bit her lip. Her hand rubbed her stomach, as if she was gently soothing the child within. She felt something that resembled a pinch, but it hurt worse that a simple pinch. However, that was the only way she could describe it. One pinch, and that was it... Swallowing hard, she looked over at him, seeing the worry in his eyes.

"It was nothing," she said, "The baby just did something weird, I guess. I'm fine."

She gave him a reassuring smile, wanting him not to worry. The last thing she needed was for something dramatic to happen to her, and for more Jason to have to come behind her and clean up her mess.

"And no, I like the the nice you," she said, smirking a bit, "I'm sorry."

Jason frowned watching her, concern darkening his face as he studied her. Trying to figure out if she really was okay. Nodding slowly he sighed softly. “Its okay. Just accept that I want to do this.”he muttered, because it really was the only reason he was helping chad, to get her the money they needed. “You should go lay down. Do you want the couch or bed?”he said his face settling into stubborn lines that said he wasn’t about to let her do anything now that she had done something weird.

Annabel pouted a bit and sighed. "It's Christmas," she whined, then thought about it for a moment, "The couch. Only if you stay with me and watch Christmas movies." She stood up slowly and began to put dishes in the sink, getting ready to wash them. "I won't let you bully me out of my favorite holiday. The baby is probably just moving around and- Oh! Ow!"

A plate clattered to the floor, and Anna grasped her stomach, groaning in pain. She winched and grabbed on to the counter, holding on to it in order to keep her standing.

Jason frowned before nodding.”Fine. the couch it is-“he started instantly at her side as she gripped the counter, picking her up.”You’re not fine. We’re going to the hospital now, and I don’t care what you say.”he growled stubborn and worried as he picked her up, bundled them both up before moving quickly and carefully out to the car and putting her into the seat before heading to the hospital.

When they got there he picked her up out of it, heading for the hospital doors,”Help. Please.”He said looking anxious as he looked at the nurse in the er, trying so very hard to not show how panicked he was, not wanting to scare her.

The nurses rushed over to them, rolling over a wheel chair so that he could set her down. "Sir, what's going on? Is she in labor?"

Annabel shook her head, her hand placed on her stomach. She didn't seem like she was in quite as much pain, but she looked relatively uncomfortable. "No, I'm not," she said, "I'm just feeling some odd - OH! Oh, shit, ow..."

The nurse nodded, yelling for one of the nurses at the counter to call Annabel's doctor.

"How far along are you ma'am?"

"Seven and a half months," she said as the nurse started to quickly wheel her down the hall, "Eveything's been fine. She's growing the way she's supposed to, and my fluid hasn't lowered any in the past couple of appointments..." She was rambling now, because she was scared to death. Surely, nothing was wrong with the baby? She hadn't done anything to make it happen. In fact, she had really taken it easy from the moment the doctor told her too... But maybe it wasn't enough, maybe this was all her fault.

The nurse helped her up into the bed, and the doctor was there within a few minutes, starting to run several different tests on her. The whole time, Annabel shook with fear, looking up at Jason with pain in her eyes.

"God, Jason, what if..." she swallowed hard, tears in her eyes.

Jason stood, hovered really next to the bed as he held her hand, looking awkward with it but also willing to brave staying with her in a confined area while his emotions ran high enough that he was changing more, his eyes slitting and fangs showing. “Shh, don’t say it. You’ll both be fine.”he muttered slowly, carefully, the soft slur to his words saying he was talking around fangs, which was a risk. But one that he was willing to put up with, willing to stay with her, even if it meant he was risking discovery. Because he wasn’t about to leave her alone with this, not when ever instinct and need demanded that he be there, though it was hard to not lash out at the doctors to make them hurry.

Annabel watched him, seeing the fangs and the slits in his eyes. Suddenly, she was so incredibly thankful for him and his need to take care of her. If she was alone, she wouldn't know what she would have done... And if she had been alone right then, she would have been so scared. And even though she still felt fear, she also felt better knowing that he was there with her.

The doctor came in looking exasperated. "Well, Penny, Jason," she said, looking up at the two of them, "All of the tests say you and the baby are fine and in perfect health. Your little girl seems to have no intentions of coming tonight." She smiled a little, trying to be gentle with the two obviously scared and worried young parents. "However, your fluids have lowered and they are now at the high risk stage. I'd like for you to stay the night just to be sure. We will have people here who will check on you hourly, and they will call me if anything happens... As for your pains? I'm not too sure." She frowned. "Like I said, all of the tests were normal..."

Annabel looked confused. I mean, it's not like she made it up... However, she wasn't about to argue. "I can go home tomorrow?"

"Yes," she answered, "If everything is still looking okay. When you go home, I want you on bed rest. No work. Nothing. I need you spending your time putting forth as little energy as possible."

Annabel frowned. She was not happy about staying the night at the hospital, that was for damn sure, but now she was on bed rest? Great.

“Well. Good.”Jason said slowly, carefully talking, because he knew if anyone would notice he was different, it would be a doctor. Looking relieved that the baby wasn’t coming tonight he swallowed hard, looking worried. “Well, we’ll just have to be careful.”he muttered holding vera’s hand as he looked around him before frowning at vera.”Don’t look so upset. I’ll make sure you have books and move the tv into the bedroom.”he muttered rubbing his thumb over her hand, dropping a kiss to her forehead. Wondering just how far he could trust chad, because despite knowing what a bastard vera’s father was, he…he wondered if the man was twisted enough to sink to levels of depravity unexplored. Wondering if her pain could be a change to a child, even if she’d run away before finding out she was pregnant, she had been home when it happened…wondering if he was just being paranoid he shook away the thought before sighing softly.

“Just rest, sweetheart.”he muttered smiling down at her.

Vera leaned into his kiss on her forehead, closing her eyes. "Okay, okay," she whispered, "I'll rest."

When the doctor left, it was clear that Vera had been scared shitless. She was not her usual self. Instead, she looked like she had a lot on her mind, and she was clingy toward Jason. The idea of losing the baby scared her so, so much. And what was even worse, was she was scared that it would have been her fault. She wouldn't be able to live with herself knowing she did something to risk her child's life...

"You are going to stay with me, right?" she murmured, looking up at him. Gently, she scooted over in the bed, giving him some room to lay down beside her. "Please. I can't... I just don't want to be alone." She swallowed hard. "I need you here."

Jason smiled looking at her, “I’ll stay don’t worry. But give me a few minutes okay? I want to call into work, tell tehm that I wont be in for a few days.”He muttered dipping his head to press a kiss to her forehead. “I’ll be right back.”he promised, because you weren’t allowed to use cell phones in hospital rooms and he knew he had to call before he lost his nerve to call. “Promise.”he muttered again before moving out of the room. Biting his lip, human emotion fighting with the instinct that said he needed more help, needed to be just as paranoid and protective as he wanted to be.

Dialing chad’s number he swallowed hard. “WE need to talk. In person. Can you get here sometime soon?I’m currently at the hospital.”he said the words holding a slight hiss now that he was in private, and talking to someone who already knew what he was, the man was allowing himself to be just as animalistic as he was.

When Chad answered the phone, it was clear he had been asleep. His eyebrows knitted together at Jason's words, but he already started to get his jeans on. "Hospital? Is everything okay?"

He pulled his pants on and grabbed his keys and wallet, knowing that the stubborn man would not have called unless it was absolutely necessary. He may have not talked to Jason for very long, but he got a pretty clear view of the man's personality. There was no way he would ask for his help if he didn't really need it.

"I can catch a red eye in an hour," he said, quickly looking at flight times on his Ipad, "It will have me there mid morning. Will that be okay?"

“…penny’s having problems. The…pregnancy isn’t going smoothly. But that’s not why I want you here. There is…circumstances that you need to know, because it might affect things. And if you even want to help us anymore.”Jason said trying to not sound as anxious and panicked as he was, not about to admit who she was on the phone, because he didn’t know who could be listening in, nodding even if chad couldn’t see it. “That’s fine. We cant go home until the afternoon anyways. Just ask for penny when you get here. We’re up in the maternity ward.” He said before hanging up, heading back inside after calling work like he said he would, heading inside just to be with his mate and child, needing to be close to make sure they were still doing as fine as they could be.
