There, standing in the corner, books held to her stomach in a relaxed way, her back against the locker and hazel eyes glued before her, stood Cassie. She was shy, she was quiet, she hardly said much at school. She kept to herself. She was withdrawn. She was everything her older brother was not, in the worst ways. With slightly curly blonde hair that framed her face, not in an obtrusive way but like she was definitely trying to hide behind her hair, she ran her hand through it to push it out of the way but the curly locks just liked to flitter around her slender cheekbones. They hid the azure of her blue eyes, her cute button of a nose and her full pink lips. Underneath all the shyness, awkward tendencies and just weirdness along with lack of social capabilities, lay a beautiful girl who just didn’t know it. And the worst part, she wished everyday that her brother saw her the way he saw the pretty girls.
Pushing herself off the locker, Cassie turned and walked down the hall, passing her brother and his friends but kept her eyes forward. Her favorite subject was English. She liked to think she had an aptitude for it. That’s the class she had first. English.
It’s not to say that Cassie had no friends. She had friends. How long they stayed her friend that was a different thing. It never lasted. She tried. She honestly did. But somehow they never stayed for long. They either thought she was too weird or possibly figured out what she harbored feelings for her brother. She never knew. All she knew was it was safer to keep to herself. Not worry about anyone hurting her. She had her brother. Sure, she didn’t have him the way she might have liked to but at least he was in her life.
Now whether he thought what all her past friends thought, she didn’t really know. As if she was afraid of even associating with him at school, in front of people, Cassie didn’t go out of her way to talk to him. She wondered if people knew they were related. But then again, she wouldn’t be surprised if that was the case. It’s not like either of them went out of their way to tell the world that they were brother and sister, although perhaps getting a ride from him every morning to school was a dead give away.
All in all, she loved her brother. A lot. So much so, she’d never do anything to jeopardize his standing or anything in his life. Even if she wanted to. Even if she wanted to do something and finally get what was hers. She couldn’t. She wasn’t brave enough or confident enough. Because Cassie knew without a doubt her brother didn’t see her that way. She should stop trying. But there were some things a person could just not shake. This was one of those moments.
