Ethan watched Elisa through his eyepiece as she drew a leyline to her and used her demon magic. Through the eyepiece, it was a beautiful sight and he saw the rapture on her face as she seemed to come alive at working a leyline and manipulating it to open the wardrobe. There was also something else in her face, he noticed, beyond magical pleasure. Her eyes were half-lidded as she released the leyline, her lips curled into a seductive smile, a sultry aspect to her gaze as she met his eyes briefly and turned away. She was panting slightly, chest heaving and her skin looked flushed. Excited... but in what way? And the taint of her magic was on her, coating her aura and glowing red in his eyepiece, pulsing slightly and seeming to flow through her body.
Elisa wasn't looking at Ethan as she spoke, obviously tired by her efforts, but her body language seemed like she was afraid of him suddenly and she moved aside to sit down well away from him at the desk. Ethan studied her for a second and walked a bit closer to her, gazing at her intently. She wouldn't meet his eyes and her breathing was ragged. He reached out to touch her should briefly as he thanked her and found her body hot as she flinched from his touch like he had burned her.
Ethan frowned and walked to the wardrobe, examining the contents with his normal eye and his magic lens. Most were silly tinkets, cheap jewelry, some photographs of what presumably might be Claudia's family, but one item glowed to his eye and he picked it up carefully. It was a ring, simple and silver with a small pattern of roses worked into it cunningly. And it glowed to his eye, not to his lens. He had learned how to see the traces of human magic while a student at Blackfriars, and this ring was enchanted by a human without a doubt. Unlike demon magic, the human spells bound objects more permanently and in a cleaner fashion. Without perverting nature and leylines like demons did. Demon magic was like cooking food over an open flame versus boiling it or roasting it. Less smoke and ash, and a more pure flavor. And demons, he knew, were blind to human magic and Claudia, or Elisa, were unable to see the glow this ring produced.
Ethan raised the ring to his naked eyes as he pulled his eyepiece off. The inner circle had runes carved marking the binding enchantments of the magician who had created it. Definitely a spell of location, to find the wearer, and another spell of to make the wearer fall asleep he guessed. Probably triggered by a command. But Claudia had left it here and not worn it the night of her murder, meaning her killer had found and tracked her by non-magical means. Perhaps he had attended her play and escorted her home. Ethan pocketed the ring and turned to Elisa, who still looked flushed and unsteady.
Ethan knelt by Elisa and gently placed his hand on her shoulder as he stared up at her, trying to meet her gaze.
"Are you feeling ok? Is anything wrong?" he asked in a concerned tone.
