Tension had been coiled tight in her stomach. Ever since she'd first heard of the special rules for the centennial Hunger Games, she'd been dreading this day even more than usual. She'd been making her niece promise not to volunteer almost daily. Now Emme was fidgeting, fussing over her hair and clothes. It was one of the few things she was completely in control of and.. Yes, appearances mattered, especially when it came down to the Victors. People would be looking at them. The Capitol loved them, and any sensible victor wanted to keep it that way. Looking in the mirror, she studied the blond hair waving down her back, the blouse falling nicely over her body. It was open to show the tattoo at her throat, but no cleavage, not today. Subtly sexy, but serious. A good look for a Reaping Day. Once they reached the Capitol they'd expect more bold looks from her. Her fingers brushed through the blonde locks again, and then she made herself turn away. It didn't matter that much. 30 minutes ago she'd been on the phone with a Victor from Four, one of her closest friends. They'd managed to ease some of the tension in each other, but it was returning to her quickly. And now she didn't have time anymore to do something, to keep herself busy. For a moment she understood those Victors, that found comfort in a bottle. But that would never be Emme. She hated the loss of control more than she needed to relieve the tension. After seven years, she knew how to deal with it.

Taking a deep breath, she stepped out. Her parents would be at her brother's house. They'd make their way to the Reaping ceremony together, be there for Michelle. The young girl was now almost the same age Emme had been when she'd volunteered. Even though you trained and was prepared, the prospect of the Hunger Games would be daunting to anyone. She remembered the thundering of her heart as she'd raised her hand, calling out loud and clear. I volunteer.. It was the point of no return. But Michelle wouldn't volunteer, and even if she was Reaped.. Surely there'd be some other girl ready to volunteer.

Instead of standing with her family, Emme would have to take her place at the other side of the crowd. The VIP area near the stage, where she and the other victors from Two would have an excellent view on the tributes. Her pace was calm as she walked, all lush hip movement. Her face serious, but there was warmth in her expression. The camera found her as she crossed the square, and she winked for the audience. Now that she approached the other victors, she kept the smile on her face. In a hundred years of Hunger Games, there had been about 18 to 20 victors from District Two. Eleven of which were still alive, that included her. She didn't like all of them, and certainly not all of them liked her. But for the camera's and the occasion they all greeted each other like friends. They'd all be going to the Capitol for the Games and they'd all be trying to get District Two's team home safely.

Their representative from the Capitol stepped onto the stage. By now the square had filled with people. Boys on one side, Girls on the other. The atmosphere was practically humming with anxiety. Emme could hear a few parents or trainers shouting encouragements. Her gaze scanned the crowd, easily finding Michelle and further back, melted between the rest of the people her brother, his wife, their parents. Her smile dimmed and looked back at the Capitol rep, Zarina. Her face had been adorned with jewels, which made Emme wonder if she'd been applying for the spot in District One this year. Now this woman craved attention, even for Capitol standards, why else would she wear jewels on her face. And she didn't like Emme at all, because Emme had a tendency to upstage her. Emme pursed her lips slightly and waited. The reaping was about to begin.

Whitley was nervous as she held her best friends hand and they ran together to the town square. They weren't excited, more terrified than the others gathered. The duo refused to look at one another, afraid they'd burst into tears... again. Standing and waiting for the ceremony to start she was pulled back to a moment four years before. A moment when they'd first made the pact.

"No, it has to be this way.. If you are called Whit, I'll go for you. I'm stronger and well... winning is in my blood." The girls were laying on a blanket just before Shelly's first reaping. Her Aunt had won and ever since then the younger girl had decided she was going to win the games too...

However, each year Whit prayed neither of their names were called. So far all the older kids volunteered or were 'drafted' so neither had to worry. The thought of her best friend going into this without her scared her. It wasn't supposed to be that way. But this year, it was different and six names were going to be called. Three boys and three girls.

Together the girls stood in their matching outfits, hands clasped and staring at the stage as the rep took her spot. Their families stepped in closer, hands gently grasping at their shoulders. Whitley's family was smaller but there was no less love surrounding her as the first name was called. The air was still with tension.

"Whitley Medary!" The woman roared out in her high pitched sing-song voice.

She froze, and in that second Michelle lifted her hand. "I volunteer as tribute."

"No, Shelly... No." Whitley said in disbelief as she stared at her friend.

It was too late. Peacekeepers stepped in to congratulate her and escort her to the stage. Whitley was older, Whitley should have gone. She had to fix this. Before the next name could even be called, before Michelle's foot even graced the stage her hand was in the air. "I volunteer as tribute as well!"

Her heart felt like it would explode but she had to do this, they could do this together. She squeezed her parents hands and stepped through the throngs of people and ran to the stage.

The duo embraced, "You are crazy," They said at the same time and giggled.

"Together." Whitley said, "We can do anything." Both smiled brightly out at the crowd as the lady dipped her hand in again to call a third and final name. Whitley didn't dare look toward the VIP side, it seemed neither did Michelle. God, Shelly's Aunt Emme was going to be so pissed.

Raven stood and watched as the two girls volunteered, her brother Kevin looked over at her from his spot in the crowd then motioned towards the stage. The boyish young woman knew exactly what he meant by it. When the announcer selected who was supposed to be the final girl tribute for District 2 a small frightened looking 15 year old came slowly walking out from the crowd with tears in her eyes. Raven rolled her eyes then sighed, "I VOLUNTEER!" ,she shouted and raised her hand high in the air. The peacekeepers walked over to her and escorted her to the stage where she took her place next to the other two females there. Raven had a cold look in her eyes and a smirk on her face. Her father looked up at her from the crowd and smiled as he cheered loudly and shouted to everyone that she was 'his' daughter.

Next it was time for the boys and Kevin was itching to get up onto the stage. Before the announcer could even reach his hand into the container with the names in it Kevin raised his hand. "I VOLUNTEER!" ,he shouted with pride in his voice. He was pretty well known in District 2 and when most people seen him volunteer they cheered loudly. As Kevin made his way to the stage he raised an arm and showed off for the crowd. When he got onto the stage he put his arm around Raven then looked out into the crowd again as the people of District 2 yelled and cheered loudly for him.

He with his arms crossed in front of his chests, legs firmly planted to the ground. Nothing would shake him today. He'd wait for the first name and volunteer. It would not do to let anyone beat him to be the first male tribute. That would be best. But in any case he would be going to the Capitol tonight, start on that road to glory. The ceremony had not started yet and when it did, the girls would be first. Some kind of Capitol courtesy. It didn't matter. He let his eyes glide over the heads of the other potential tributes. There would be a team element this year. He wasn't too prepared for that and wasn't to attached to the idea either. But.. He did have his preferences. He'd want all Careers, trained well, physically in good shape. Anyone who had ever given his mother hell was eliminated. No way he'd be able to work with them. He'd like the St Croix girl. She'd be well trained by her Victor aunt, the connection to the mentor the most valuable.

The Reaping started. The Capitol representative bored him, until she got to the good part. The St. Croix girl volunteered for her friend, who then volunteered also. The third female tribute was the Martin girl, the brother was in front of him cheering loudly for her. Not a bad set of girls for the team. There was no time to ponder it. Boys were next and he was waiting politely for the first name. It never came as the Martin brother called out as volunteer. Kix' hand was only a second behind, his voice as confident. There was no way to keep the scowl from his face as both of them approached the stage. The Capitol rep was chattering on about how proud a District they were in. That they recognized the honour of entering the Games. He'd wanted the honour of being the first. It wasn't important. Winning only was.

The Martin boy was a show off, but everyone seemed to love it. It'd be good for sponsors Kix told himself. They'd all love him too, once he'd won the Games for them. His parents were easily found, both standing proud. The journey was about to begin. Finally they were complete, saluting the people of Dictrict Two before they were herded into the Justice building.

One. Two. Three. Four. Five....

River stood among the crowd of 17 year old boys and watched as the Tributes volunteered. Well, almost all of them, as one girl, the first was called. She was pretty... but just that. River's eye was more caught by her brave friend Michelle. She... was attention-catching. The sweet story of friends volunteering together made him want to vomit though. The next four were all volunteers, too. Then, it was his turn.

As the bejeweled representative dipped her hand into the bowl, River shoved aside the boy blocking his way to the path to the stage, and then he roared in a voice that left an echo to ring in the quiet square of District 2. "I VOLUNTEER!"

Eyes were immediately drawn to the roar and soon a path was cleared. River had a bad reputation among those in District 2. He was not well known as a person, like the Martins boy. Rather it was the scandal that followed him that made him known. The little brother, the mysterious drowning while at the lake not far from the city. It was never proved that he was responsible and it was years ago, but people loved to gossip. In the crowd, Ironrod Taylor, his father, was beaming proudly. And his mother was staring without tears in her eyes. She resented him, he knew it, she knew it, his father knew it. A leering smirk adorned River's face as he walked to the stage and mounted the steps to follow the rest into the Justice building. And now, District 2 had their six...
