Going for two or three from each here, and a bit beyond rock music proper, even into jazz. “Rock” as a genre name is an umbrella anyway, it’s not as if all rock bands are bluesy guitar-and-drums-based acts, it’s more about attitude and a will to make a difference I think.
There are many acts I didn’t include of course – such as The Beatles, Pearl Jam, The Crusaders, Genesis and Iron Maiden...
Pink Floyd – Sheep; Fearless ; Shine On You Crazy Diamond
Simple Minds – This Earth That You Walk Upon ; Criminal World ; The Kick Inside of Me
Judas Priest – Breaking the Law ; Sinner
Yes – Bring Me to the Power ; The Ancient ; Heart of the Sunrise
Weather Report – Brown Street ; Black Market
Keith Jarrett – Late Night Willie ; God Bless the Child (with the Standards Trio)
David Bowie – Stay ; Soul Love ; 1984
Deep Purple – Burn ; Mandrake Root (glorious live take at the 1970 BBC gig)
Moby – Whispering Wind ; I Love to Move in Here
Todd Rundgren – I Saw the Light ; Slut (yay!) ; ; Love of the Common Man
Tori Amos – Space Dog ; Take to the Sky ; Crucify
Kent (Swedish band) – FF ; Romeo återvänder ensam (”Romeo Returning Alone”) ; Kärleken väntar (”Love is Waiting”)
Audioslave – Cochise ; I Am the Highway
Derek and the Dominoes – Layla ; I Looked Away
Louise Hoffsten (Swedish jazz/blues/pop singer) – Explain it to My Heart ; Let the Best Man Win ; The Seduction of Sweet Louise
Miles Davis – Ife (on "Big Fun" album) ; Hannibal ; Human Nature (stellar version of the MJ song on the 'Miles in Paris' dvd)
Axelle Red (French/Belgian disco/soul diva) – Venez Vers Moi ; Branded (Isaac Hayes cover)
Isaac Hayes – Theme from Shaft ; Do Your Thing ; Summer in the City
U2 – Stay (Faraway, so Close!) ; Mysterious Ways ; If God Will Send His Angels
Amy Winehouse -.In My Bed ; Rehab ; Help Yourself (the lyrics of each of those songs now sound poignantly aimed at herself, it’s almost become easy to forget what a brilliant debut record Frank was, and made by a girl just turning twenty. R I P Amy)
