Rafe sighed and poured over magic tomes for what felt like the fiftieth time. These old books were hold overs from his time at the magic academy he went to in order to learn magic and start a career as a mage. But unfortunately, things had not gone well. He had set up a home here in the port city of Kassander, without knowing that there would be stiff competition here. There were a number of accomplished master and even journeyman mages of all strips, which meant breaking in as a novice was difficult. He'd need some poor customers with few alternatives, since magic was seen as strange and dangerous, and it's users were typically aloof with many wild rumors flying around about them.
He closed the tome he knew already by heart. The local Adventurer's Guildhall already had his name on a list of their list of available novice mages, and he had posted some fliers, but there seemed to be little more he could do than walk. He put on a cloak and decided to go for a walk, hoping that something, anything would happen to him. He shut and locked the door to his home, a modest residence that most people would consider lavish, if small. It wasn't an estate, with only a few rooms, but it was hardly a shack. It was just outside of the city in a more natural area where he could practice and focus in peace, but it seemed now that it was serving him little good. With much on his mind, he headed towards Kassander.
