A few years ago...
Nathaniel was among the few in his neighborhood who said that he loved it when the snow fell from the sky. Yes, everyone hated being outside shoveling snow from their driveways or the chilling temperatures that would leave some shivering even when bundled up. When it snowed, it was almost...calming to watch the snowflakes fall from the sky, to cover the world in white. As if...purifying the otherwise dirty and unattractive world they lived in for a moment of solace. Nathaniel had many ghosts in his past, some that made him openly regret the choices he made, but for the young 26 year old bachelor, that was mostly behind him now...
It's beginning to look alot like Christmas~
Yuletides songs often calmed him down. Nothing like sitting on a recliner, watching the fireplace with a blanket and a mug of Wassail to sip away to. Akin to meditation, sitting like this before the fireplace to reflect on the past was almost a Christmas tradition he would do year after year to perhaps distract him from the gloomy and lonely household. His brother lived overseas in Thailand and his parents remained at England. He really wanted to visit them, but flights going to Warwick were delayed by the snow storm yesterday. Opting instead to stay at home, he sipped the mixture from his mug until he looked outside...
He didn't mind the homeless much, having given his dues for the Salvation army charity drive just months ago, but he heard something creaking open and then closing. Was it the tool shed? Did He forget to lock it again? Nevertheless, he put on his coat, walking towards the back exit when he saw...a person huddling beneath his gazebo, clearly affected by the cold despite how well he pressed the jacket. Closing the door behind him, his slippers stamping against the cold, he endured the bitter frost as he looked up to the person, saying
"Are you looking for a place to stay? Why not come inside? I got some hot cider on the kitchen range if you want some..." he said, holding out his hand to the person, completely unaware that she was going to change his life...
Now
He worked hard to smuggle the cake inside. Things have really changed since he had invited her inside. The girl, whose name he found to be Trista matured to a very beautiful and intelligent young lady. Ever since that day, she lived with him in his household, having started attending school two years ago. She looked absolutely gorgeous, enough to remind him of... "Good morning, Trista." he greeted, smiling as he picked up a roll of newspaper and his coffee, "We're all out of cereal. Remind me to pick some up on the way back from work." he said, opening the newspaper to read about the daily news.
Nathaniel treated Trista as a father would have treated his daughter. He heard about the things she said to her psychiatrist years ago. It was almost...tragic to hear that she grew up in an abusive household, adopted by a Step Father who seldom cared for her...but as he would often say to her, such times were behind them. "Say, how did that Fundraising go for your class?" he asked, taking a sip of his coffee. Yes, life was good. In fact, he looked forward to teaching as well!
But when she returned home, he wanted to celebrate the day they first met...he hoped she liked ganache chocolate cake!
